Blind Faith

It was early. The streets were quiet and covered in mist. Angela was comforted by the fact that her wait was almost
over. Soon enough, the gates would open, the merchants and soldiers would come flooding onto the fields and the
celebrating would begin.

When she saw them, she couldn't help
thinking about her best friend, Michael. He
was one of the chosen ones, and he was
going to live in the Castle with the soldiers to
become a great seer. She had all the reason
in the world to be happy.

From afar she could see the soldiers
getting ready for their parade, some
of them practicing their dance, others
fixing their costumes.

Today was the longest day of the year and a day to
celebrate the glory of the Sun.
Angela knew she should be happy. So she smiled.

She tried not to think
about what had
happened six days
ago. She had just
turned 16. And like all
16 year olds, she had
been called to see the
priest in the Warrior
Temple.

Angela wore the robes and chanted along with the priest,
honoring the Sun.  When the chanting was over, she stood still
as he removed her robes to judge her.
Angela held her breath as he looked her over. She closed her
eyes, hoping to be judged well. Her whole future lie before her
and she prayed that she would be chosen to do something
important.

But she knew she shouldn't have hoped too much. Like so many
others her life was going to be an ordinary and dull one.
She wasn't destined to find glory in battle or as a great leader. She
had to be content to simply watch and clean up after others.

Angela was quiet and walked around the
fair wistfully, watching the children and
remembering her own childhood.
Her friends tried to jab her out of her
wandering mind and help her enjoy the
finer things in life.
But Angela just smiled and nodded and
continued to wander about aimlessly.

Angela was thinking and remembering her past and
she laughed when she saw him. He was barely
visible, sitting in the shadows, something she
herself felt like doing.

Eventually, as the Sun began to set, her wandering led her to Michael.

Angela sat down next to him. He smiled
a sad, thin smile. He was distracted by
something, his eyes staring off into
some unseen distance.
Angela knew she had to be happy for
him, so she smiled. She asks  him to
dance, hoping to cheer him up, but he
doesn't budge.

Tomorrow, Michael says, I will be leaving home and
starting life as a seer.
She wishes him luck.
It's a lot of pressure he's under so she tries to
understand why he's so quiet. Everyone is counting
on him to help win the war. He is important, a
chosen one, so she tries to be happy for him.
Still, it's a day for dancing and she wishes he would.

They sit together awhile, watching the sky turn
dark as they had so many times before.
Michael puts his head in his hands and he
nearly falls over from dizziness. A curse of his
gift.
Angela comforts him. And Michael nods and
smiles and tells Angela that he probably won't
see her for a while once he leaves for the
Castle.

And that's that. He walks away and waves.
Angela smiles and tells him I'll be waiting and
then  I'll be here.

But tries not to worry. Life will have a way of working out.
Michael will be a great seer, the one who will finally end
this long war that has plagued the city.
And life for Angela will one day be a happier one, one
where her life is more than cleaning up after others.

Angela walks home, her heart full of hope. One day, she
reminds herself, we will be happy.
And on that day, we will dance.

How Heroes are Made

Adam had awakened long before the first bell ushered in the new day. He was eager to make the acquiantance of the
new chosen one. He was looking forward to training him  to be the next great seer.

He thought about how he would
teach him to control his visions,
to use his powers of foresight to
take advantage of the Monsters,
to fast, to focus, to listen to the
sounds the Sun made. He would
teach him virtue and with his
righteousness, staring into the
glory of the Sun, he would
defeat the Monsters. And all
would be right with the world.

Adam was so caught up in his thoughts he was shocked when he
actually met Michael, who was still adrift in dreams when Adam
walked in on him. Michael heard him and rose sluggishly and
dutifully. Adam took this as a good sign and so he beamed a bright
smile at Michael, who barely managed to nod back.

As they walked down the boulevard to the inner city, Adam told Michael of the glorious life that
awaited him in the Castle. He told him of all the things he'd be studying and doing, told him about
the luxury he'd be living in, the glory he would bask in.

When Adam glanced over to Michael,
telling him some obscure bit of
history, Michael would smile his
same, thin smile that he used
whenever he had to present a
pleasant face. This wasn't always
good enough to convince people of
his sincerity, but Adam didn't seem
to mind, he just kept talking and
telling Michael how great a seer he
was going to be.

The two walked through the gates and up to the Castle, which was
just waking up. The Castle itself was adorned with paintings and
tapestries and surfaces of polished ivory and marble. They passed
through a garden, a hall, a dining court. It was quite different from
the one room shack Michael had lived in.

In the courtyard, the soldiers
were just now starting their
morning exercises and
training. Michael followed three
steps behind Adam, being extra
cautious around all of these
serious, determined patriots.

Finally, Adam led Michael to his room;
a place where he could relax, indulge
himself, drink and eat and live as a
king. He pointed out a few things, told
Michael to rest for a while and to eat
some fruit if he liked to tide his
hunger until the morning ceremonies.

Michael walked out onto
the balcony and stared out
at the city. It was beautiful.
And he should have been
happy. But no feeling
stirred in him.

He saw his home. While it was certainly small and poor, it
was full of memories- hot summers and cool winters, days
playing with Angela and John and all the others. He wished
to be there once more.
But then he straightened his back and admonished himself
for being weak. He reminded himself of his special duty. He
stared out at the city with an impassive glare.

Suddenly sensing that someone was standing beside
him, Michael turned around, seeing a fat old man
picking his nose.

Michael was surprised and said nothing for a moment.
Then he apologized and said the greeting, honoring the
Sun and praying for good weather. At last, he went back
to staring stupidly at the old man again.
Sensing the boys discomfort, the old man laughed at him.
This is your first day, isn't it? he asked, though he already
knew it was.

I am to be the next seer, he told the man, trying to sound
confident. He told the man he would use his visions to
guide the soldiers in the battles and that Adam would be
training him.
But he wasn't confident and the old man knew this. And
so did Michael.
The old man laughed one final time before walking away.

He looked
outside and
noticing the Sun
nearing the mid-
morning third
mark, decided to
start on his way
down to the great
hall.

Others his age were also on their way down
to the hall. There was a group of young
concubines, some young servant boys and a
troop of soldiers with spears in hands.
He smiled thinly at the soldiers and nodded to
some of the others, all of whom ignored him.
Michael pretended he didn't mind and walked
down to the hall, flights of fancy dancing in
his mind.

He was getting quite comfortable ignoring the others that he jumped in shock when he suddenly felt someone
grab his shoulder. He fumbled for words, but then the boy laughed and Michael laughed and the tension
relieved, the two quickly became friends.

Michael learned the boys
name was Gabriel, a
nobleman's son who was
learning the arts of war
for his first year. He told
Michael all about his
room and how he liked
jewelry and mirrors and
Michael told Gabriel that
he liked to watch the Sun
set.

They entered the main hall and lined up as they waited for the Emperor(who was shorter than Michael expected) to
take his seat. As the servant boys brought the food, rich with herbs and wonderful smells, Gabriel's eyes widened.
Michael was also amazed at the amount and variety of food that was heaped on his plate.

And all he had to do to live like this was to fight the good fight, use his powers for good. It was all so simple he
thought to himself.
Adam smiled at him from across the room, beaming
with pride and obviously looking forward to training.
Your training will begin tomorrow he signed.
Michael smiled.
This time for real.

Later that night, while
Michael was readying
himself for sleep, he
looked out his balcony
one last time. He saw
the blue light that
Angela had lit for him.
He waved, although he
was sure she couldn't
see him.

His mind was filled with thought as he settled down to sleep.
But he sat down anyway, forcing himself to close his eyes.

He drifted into sleep and in his mind he saw himself being pulled from the fields about the city into the dark forest. In
his heart he felt hate and fear, for this was the home of the Monsters.
He tried to focus on his thoughts as much as he could; to remember the vision and to see with as great a clarity as he
could.  But it got away from him.

The Monsters made noises all around him.
He wanted to rip them apart, but he was
frozen. All he could do was watch and
wonder what terrible things they would do.
He saw them slowly come up to him, their
eyes red and scary, their voices, deep and
frightening.

But as he watched, the oppressive murk of the forest cleared. The Monsters passed him and suddenly, he wasn't afraid.
These weren't the monsters he was told lived in the forests. The savage ones without hearts and meaning.
These monsters had song and spirit. And they also had children.

Michael woke up. Tomorrow, he would start his training.
He would be the next Seer. The one who would help win the war and
defeat the monsters.
He had always thought it was the right thing to do.
But now he was confused.

Of Men and Monsters
(from the Book of Light)

One day, when the sky still had five Suns, Man was created. Made whole by the five Suns. He
was a special creation and the Suns lavished upon him all of their wisdom, beauty and warmth.

Man was warm and content and he made great cities with the Suns guidance. But  then Moon
appeared and all of that changed. When Moon appeared, darkness and cold spread throughout
the land. And from out of that darkness came monsters and other evil things that attacked  Man.

To fight the Moon, the Suns forged swords . The people  followed suit, using
their swords to  battle the Monsters.
The Suns fought the Moon, but they could not defeat her, although they tried
valiantly.

After many years, the Suns became desperate and decided to attack Moon when she least
expected it : in the cover of her darkness.
Doing so, the Suns surprised her, one of the Suns even managed to mangle her badly. But
without their light to protect them, the Suns were terribly vulnerable.

Surely enough, Moon woke up and sent her Stars to attack the Suns like a swarm
of so many bees. Unprepared and unable to defend themselves, the Suns fell one
by one, all except the Yellow one, who managed to escape.

This Sun, instead of continuing the fight, hid man behind a great wall to shield him
from the Monsters and from the Moon.

The final Sun continued to shine, but vowed to never again enter Moons domain.
There was an uneasy agreement. For half of the day, Sun would reign. The other
half would belong to Moon.

Man watched this and grew disheartened. Disease, Destruction, Death, they all
continued to spread, and only the wall kept them out.

All Man could do was gather his strength and hope that one day he would be strong enough
to win over the darkness and get revenge for the four fallen Suns and to bring  peace and
prosperity and light to all the land.

Young and Restless

Before a big campaign the air is filled with fear and excitement.
The soldiers train and work, but mostly, they
dream of the glory they will soon find in battle.

But  for the Seer, there is little time for rest. He awakens early every morning to train his mind with meditations and
exercises.

From sunrise to sunset, he trains under the eyes of Adam. He can't afford to be lazy; the fate of the city is at stake. He
trains all day long, with only a short break for his morning and evening meals. But he doesn't complain.

He's been told too many times how important
he is and how he will be the one to finally put
an end to the war.
He can't afford to be lazy.

He'd have his meals with Gabriel.
Gabriel would talk about his plans to be
the richest soldier ever. His plan to have a
new wife for every season.
Michael would just nod and smile and think
of Angela. He was always distracted,
though  Gabriel didn't seem to mind. He
just loved the company, and the two, for all
their differences were good friends.

Michael worried about his visions because the
Monsters in his head, they didn't seem so bad, they
didn't seem like a threat.
Adam would brush him off and tell him the same
thing everyone else told him- the Monsters were just
trying to mess with you, to confuse you.

The air started getting cooler, the Sunsets sharper. The smells of
autumn filled the air and training intensified. Soon, they were told, they
would leave for battle.

So the soldiers intensified their training,
learned how to strike a death blow, how to
survive the cold, to revive a fallen comrade.
Their sole purpose was to win the war. They
dreamed of glory.

And Michael, when he had the chance, dreamed of peace.

The Good Fight

The parading out of the city brought smiles to the soldiers hearts. They were off to find their glory. Or death.
The people cheered as they left, wishing them luck in their fight against the Monsters. They applauded until the last soldier
walked out the gate, then stood watching as the door slammed shut.

The soldiers paraded down the vacant green fields that surrounded the city, from when they left
until nightfall. All along the way, they laughed and sang and celebrated their impending victory.

It wasn't until they stopped near the forest and saw the darkness within that they began to realize just what was happening.
That they could die.

David told them they would rest and so they pitched their tents, and as light left the field, they grew quiet. Sleep did not come
that night, so far away from the city and the Sun. The soldiers waited in their tents, praying for safety, or praying for victory.

Late that night, Gabriel came to talk to Michael. To ease his
worries and talk about how they were going to celebrate when
they got back. He just wanted to talk about anything to keep his
mind off of the darkness that seemed to be peering into him
from the forest nearby.

He noticed Michael staring into the forest. And then his greatest
fear began to play out as Michael headed for the forest.
Where are you going? Gabriel yelled. But Michael didn't answer
and Gabriel knew. He was going to talk to the Monsters. This was
stupid, this was suicide. If he'd go in there, he'd be ripped to
shreds for sure.

He couldn't convince his friend to stop. All he could do was watch as Michael left.
And when he was gone, Gabriel went to wake the others.

Later on, Michael would tell Gabriel what had happened
when he went into the forest. How he was surrounded
by their red eyes and though they were afraid, they saw
Michael was unarmed and so they did not attack him at
first.

They surrounded him and blocked his escape. Michael surprised them by talking in their language while the
cool breeze of the forest sighed between them. Michael told the Monsters that he had seen their ways and
that he hoped we could learn to live in peace.

But his hope did not last, because very quickly,  a bright light tore into the forest.

It paralyzed the Monsters and the soldiers ran in and slaughtered them. All
Michael could do was watch as they laughed and killed with pride.

The look on their eyes, Michael said, made him feel as if  he betrayed them.

A War Story

His father told him not to move and closed the cupboard door, sealing him inside. The boy was silent,
trembling with terror, shivering inside the enclosure, listening with horror to the sounds of war all around
him.

There was noise and then for a long time,
silence. How long, the boy did not know.
He thought of peeking out, but resisted.
His father HAD told him not to move. A
long time passed. It could have been hours
or it could have been days.

Finally, a soldier he didn't recognize kicked over the cupboard and
he came tumbling out. The soldier laughed in surprise and picked
the boy up.

The boy looked around the house. It's in ruins. His father lays motionless in  a
pool of blood. And the soldier who is holding him has a blade covered in blood.

The boy makes his own
conclusions and goes after the
soldier in anger. He takes the
soldier by surprise and knocks him
down. The soldier laughs and
stands back up, securing the boys
arms around his chest.

He stops laughing when the boy maneuvers a small knife from under his
shirt and slices off two of the soldiers fingers with it. The soldier sees
red and kicks the boy across the room, slamming him into a wall.

The boy blacks out. When he
wakes up, he's hungry, cold and he
hurts all over. He didn't know it
now, but he had just broken four
ribs and his left arm.

He remembers what had happened but doesn't know
how he wound up where he is. He struggles, but it's no
use. He's too tired to hurt anybody and too injured to
escape.

The captain looks the boy over. He knows the boy is strong. He tells him that it was not soldiers who killed his
father, but Monsters. He asks the boy to train to be a fighter to avenge his father and kill Monsters. The boy
agrees. He wants his revenge.

He trains, his bones heal, and he becomes strong.

He kills many Monsters, but he
doesn't forget his father and the
ones who laughed at him. He waits
many years, until he is strong
enough. Then, on a winters night he
finds the ones who ripped him from
his home countlessseasons past.

They are old men and they beg for mercy. But he shows them none.

Light for all to see

When the soldiers were home and everybody was celebrating the victory, drunk with wine and happiness, the Emperor gave a
grand speech before the people. He promised that now that we had struck such a critical blow to the monsters, we could strike
them down once and for all.

David  heard the people cheer and he stepped forward. He thanked the people and told them that pretty soon, the fighting
would be over. He gave an account of the battle, told about the valor and courage of the soldiers. And then, he pointed to the
future, to a brighter time when the Monsters would be gone, and he unveiled his plans to build a tower. A beacon. A symbol
of strength. The people cheered.

Gabriel was excited because, just like many other soldiers, he was going to be promoted for his efforts in battle. And this
beacon, it would only prove for more fruitful battles in the future. He waited in line-up, listening for his name to be called
and his new rank awarded him.
Later would come the initiation. He would know love and adoration for his accomplishments and rank. But now, he looked
over and saw his friend Michael.  Gabriel grinned. This is wonderful, isn't it? Are we going to go to the spa together like we
planned after all of this?

Not getting a response, he suggested they do the initiation together, because it was going to be a once in a
lifetime thing. Michael just smiled.
I'm going to go to my room now. He said. I need some time to think.

Michael wanted to lie down and forget all
of this. To pretend it was all just a dream.

But when he came to his room, David was there. Waiting.
I want you to go for a walk with me, he commanded Michael.

David told him they were out in the field to set up flares. Lights to scare the monsters away from the City.

He took Michael deeper and deeper into the fields, far into the valley. As they walked, David gathered information.
He got Michael to talk about his job, soldiers, everything. David told Michael he knewwhere the Queen was hiding
and Michael would say, but you'd never find her in the Hundred Mile Forest not realising David had no way of
knowing all along.

Michael would shrug and say he wanted to help the City to be glorious when David asked why he did what
he did. David laughed, knowing he was just being told what he wanted to hear and that Michael himself did
not believe his own words.

After many miles, they surprised a Monster out foraging on the corners of the forest.
David gestured towards it, but Michael stood with a confused
look upon his face.
Kill it, David said.

Michael stood frozen in fear. I can't.

David laughed. He jumped in front of Michael and slew the beast.
Then he looked
back at Michael
and growled. He
was covered
in blood.

The two returned to the city. David would sometimes throw looks Michaels way and Michael would cower in
embarrasment. He didn't even have to say anything, Michael felt ashamed.

The two walked back to the Castle and David told Michael Our City isn't beautiful just by accident. People had to die
for this City. Wars had to be fought.

Perhaps it's time for me to leave, then, he told David.
You've served your purpose here. Now that we know where the Queen
is hiding, leave.

Michael was surprised.
He hadn't expected to be told
to leave, actually.
But he didn't think.
He told himself this was
a good thing.

And he left.

Now that Michael was gone, David had to revise his plans and pick a new captain. He studied over the lists of the
new second years, thinking it would be good to have someone young to help him train the soldiers for the final
battle.

He would need someone fun. Personable. Someone to convince the people that we're all one big happy family.

He looked the list over and found his name. And then he grinned. They were going to win this war. He was sure of it.

Life and Death

The speakers rushed around the city,
spreading the news as fast as their
feet could run. Michael was dead,
they shouted. He had fallen down a
sacred well while practicing a ritual
they spoke.

The people panicked. Cried. But David came and talked the people into calming down. He
promised them that all was not lost.

He reminded them of the beacon they were building
and how it would bring light to the City and destroy
their enemies, the Monsters.

And so what if Michael wasn't there?
Gabriel told the people they would get by
just fine without him.
They didn't need him and neither did he.

Michael snuck about, hidden in the shadows in a large cloak. When the
people had gone back to work and everything had settled, he went to
Angelas home.

She was frightened at first.
But then he explained
things. She said she'd be
happy to have him even
before she was done
thinking about it.

.

He told Angela that he simply wanted
to live a normal life. To not be worried
by the war anymore. For things to be
simple again.

She didn't argue much, she
just wanted Michael to be
happy.
And he never complained. He
hid inside, sleeping until
midday and doing the
housework. By the time she
came back in the evening, he'd
have a meal ready.

At night, Michael and Angela
sat on the roof and
remembered old times. They
never talked about the
Emperor, the beacon, the wars,
or visions. Although this
saddened her, she didn't want
to remind him of his past. Still,
she wished he could have seen
how great he could really be.
That he didn't have to save the
City all by himself.

One day, after dinner and they were relaxing on the roof, Michael
told Angela that in the upcoming battle the City was going to turn
to flames and many would suffer and die.
She knew his visions were  true, and she was fearful that the City
was headed for destruction. She told him it would be ok, though,
that together, they'd find a way out of this.
Michael just smiled. It wasn't a happy smile. It was a smile that
said that all hope was lost. That nothing he did mattered.

As the beacon neared completion, the feeling of
impending doom seemed distant. Everyone was
simply going on with life: the farmers farmed, the
bakers baked and the potters made pots.
The shortest days of the year were approaching and
soon the Monsters would come into the fields. The
flares disturbed their migrations, and angered
them. That was why they were put there. To confuse
and anger them. And soon, we all knew, they would
attack.

On a day like any
other, they came.
David stood at the
front with Gabriel
close behind.
It was going to be
a massacre.

Angela reassured Michael that it would all be ok. But Michael laughed. We're
going to die, he said. We're going to die and that's that.
Come on, she said, leading him away from the mayhem.

It's hopeless,
Michael thought,
watching the
commotion. The
soldiers were
beautiful, he had to
admit, but what
good will that be
when everyone is
dead?

The soldiers stood at the front with David, holding the Monsters back. The guards stood at the top of the beacon, firing
bursts of Sun at the Monsters. People ran this way and that, afraid and confused.

Angela yelled grabbed his hand. I think this way is safe. But everywhere they went, they were blocked off and soon,
they were cornered.  Michael closed his eyes and listened as the Monsters closed in on him. Accepting reality like he
had been told so many times before, he closed his eyes.

He opened his eyes, thinking he'd see the end, but his life was still his own.
He was relieved. But then, he looked down, and to his horror, he saw blood.
Angela was covered in blood.
She had protected him.
Why? He asked, Why?

She just smiled at him. Because I
love you. She said. And it's better
than being a nobody for the rest of
my life.
And then she was gone.

Michael's didn't know what to do.
His world was completely gone from him now.

Eventually, Michael felt a hand reach out to him. It was David. He didn't have to speak, Michael saw the smug
expression on his face and knew David was there just to gloat.
David stood there, laughing at the dead Monsters, proud at his victory. Looking around, he didn't seem to notice the
City was covered in flames and littered with dead bodies.

Either that or he just didn't care.

Seeing in the Dark

An Endless Cycle

. . . but at a
cost.

The beacon
was a hideous
design. It had
destroyed the
Monsters, and
the City as
well. it was the
City's greatest
achievement . .

David had watched as the last of them came and he had killed the last of
the Monsters wth his own hands. Now they had finally won, he yelled to
the masses. But the people looked about and found little reason to
celebrate.

The city was destroyed. The forest would start to rot without Monsters there to tend it and the fields had turned yellow from
the fire and contamination.

Gabriel felt sick to his stomach. He
should have been happy but
something felt terribly wrong. His
thoughts kept turning to his old
friend Michael. Why didn't we listen
to you, he wondered.

But then he remembered his mirrors, his servants, his
jewelry and fine food. He looked at himself and felt
disgusted. Now I remember why we didn't listen, he
thought, we didn't want to give all of this up.
It's a sickness.

That night, the priests would watch the stars and predict the
future. They would tell of the glorious victory over the dark
forces and how much more beautiful the world was now that
the Monsters were gone.

The following day, most of the people would stay and start to rebuild the City. The fields were bare and their stomachs
empty, but what lie outside the world they had grown up in was scarier than hunger or death.
A rumor began stirring about a vision the seer had. A vision of a life and land without suffering or fear. A time long
agowhen we lived on the other edge of the forest.

A few left the City to search for this
land, but they were never heard from
again.
Most stories painted a grim fate for
them outside the City walls. Perhaps
they all died after 3 days like the
stories say.
But perhaps they didn't die and they
really did reach the other end of the
darkness. A land without suffering or
fear.

The End
