HIDDEN SUBJECT |
HIDDEN SUBJECT |
Hello, Welcome to Flash4Beginners. This is the 4th part of the FlashforBeginners series. If you have ever seen another part of this series (apart from the clay one) you know these tutorials are different from other tutorials. This tutorial really SHOWS you what you need to do. You see the mouse move, see what you have to click on. Etc... This is an Flash MX 2004 Tutorial, so if you have another Flash version, everything might look a little bit different. No need to worry. As long as you use at least MX, you should be able to follow the whole tutorial, if you use an older version (5 or below) everything will be slightly harder, but still understandable. Well, that's about it, lets start with the first subject. Tweening! Tweening is one of the most important things in Flash, once you master tweening, you can actually make your first movie! So play attention, do not move on with any other subject before you understand tweening. |

SECRET #3 |
SECRET #3 |
MOTION TWEENING |
MAIN MENU |
MAIN MENU |
Aaah... My Home, Flash. First we are going to do a motion tween, what a motion tween basically does is it moves an object from one side of the screen to another side of the screen. To start with, draw a circle somewhere in the screen. |
PLAY ANIMATION |
SKIP ANIMATION |
SKIP ANIMATION |
Ok, so far so good, not onto something slightly harder (still easy as hell though) Adding frames. Lets say we add..... 50 frames. Frames might not mean anything to you now, but at the end of this lesson, we have the circle in frame 1 on the left side of the screen, and on frame 50 on the right side of the screen, when you play the movie, you will see the circle move. Select frame 50 in your timeline (in the animation you see what the timeline is) and press F5 (or you can right click on frame 50 and press insert frame) |
BACK |
BACK |
Ok, now lets create a tween with these frames. This is actually very easy. Right click somewhere on the frames and press Create Motion Tween After you have done that, select the first frame and movie the circle to the left of the screen, then select the 50th frame, press F6 to add a key frame (or right click and select Insert Key frame) With frame 50 still selected move the Circle to the right of the screen. Note: Of you have created the motion tween the frames will turn purple. |
Congratulations! You have now successfully created a motion tween, you can play your movie by selecting the first frame and pressing enter, or you can select: Window, Test movie. If you think your movie doesn't run fast enough, delete some frames, or increase the FPS (frames per second) you do that by going to Modify, Document, and type something behind frame rate. |
DOWNLOAD EXAMPLE FILE HERE |
NEXT |
NEXT |
Ok, Now that we have done a tween, its time to do something a little bit more complicated. We are going to add a few layers with Circles on them, and tween each circle. This way we can create something a little bit like a body. First start by opening a new document. (File, New) |
Ok, when you open a new flash document you instantly have 1 layer. We are going to add 2 more. Right click on layer 1 and select Insert Layer, Do that two time so you will have 2 extra layers. Then draw Circles in it (select the first frame in the layer you want the circle to be in and draw it in there) Note: I wont show the circle drawing in the animation, cause you already know how to do that, the circle will just pop-up, saves you time watching the animation anyways. |
Layer 2 |
Layer 1 |
Layer 3 |
Ok, now. Its actually pretty simple. Add frames for all the layers and convert them into motion tweens. Now select a frame somewhere and drag a body part, you will see flash will automatically insert a key frame (although its recommended that you insert the key frames yourself when you have a lot of layers, to make sure you wont screw up your flash) |
Now just keep doing this, every 10 frames or such. This way you can create an animation. This example might seem a little simple or boring, but you can create very cool animations this way. Click Play Animation to see the example and also an example of what you can do with it. |
EXAMPLE: |
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH IT: |
Congratulations! You (hopefully) mastered the Tween! Wasn't so hard, was it? Now move on with the next part in the tutorial! |
Need more help with this? Goto the forum of my site! |

Its over... Didn't I tell you? Wtf are you doing... Why did you goto the next frame?!?!? Omg... You are... EVIL!!! |
SHAPE TWEENING |
Heya, Welcome to the Shape tweening section of this tutorial, when you get here I suppose you already mastered the motion tween. A shape tween is a bit like a motion tween, but with a shape tween you can change the shape of an object. |
Like this: |
ok, shape tweening, it is a bit harder then motion tweening, but still not so hard. Ok, first draw a circle in frame 1 (disable the outlines, you can do that here) Not right click on frame 20 and select Insert Blank Key frame You can also just select frame 20 and press F7. Now draw a square in frame 20 on the same place as the circle was in the other frames. Also disable the outlines for this square. |
ok, now the fun part... Applying the shape tween! Pretty simple actually, first select the first frame in the timeline. Now... See the properties box on the bottom of the screen? Click on it to expand it. Now on the place where it says Tween, Select Shape from the menu (you can also do a motion tween this way, but that isn't what we are doing now) |
Now test your movie (control, test movie) or select the first frame and press enter to play it. It should look like this: |
Now we are going to do something harder, first open a new document (not shown in the video) Now draw a circle in the first frame, add about 30 frames, and add a empty key frame in the last frame (select it an press F7) Now draw something more complicated in that frame, like this: Make the frames into a Shape tween, This all is not shown in the Video, cause you already know how to do it by know. |
Well... That is not good right.... Anyways, we have something called a shape hint to fix that. You can use shape hints to tell flash which part of the drawing should go where after the shape tween. |
Well.. If you try testing it now... it probably will be a little bit like this: (not always, but at least try to make it be like this to understand what's going on ok) Anyways, we are going to add some shape hints. Goto the first frame of the shape tween and press Control, Shift, H (or goto Modify, Shape, Add shape hint ) |
Ok, add one shape hint, it will be a red circle with an A on it, drag an snap it on the left of your circle, now goto the last frame, and snap it to the arm of the figure you drew, that means the part where you snapped the Shape hint in in the circle drawing will move to the part where the arm is in the Figure drawing. When they are snapped correctly they will change color. Confusing? Look at this screen below: |
Do that for every part in the drawing, untill it looks like this: |
Ok, now you can finally watch the video, Note: I will only add 1 shape tween in the video. But if you know how to do one, you know how to do the rest right? |
a |
Once you have applied a shape hint for every limb of the drawing like shown before, it should be done, and look like this: |
Well, that is about it for shape tweening. Hope you learned something from it :D |
MOTION GUIDE |
Ok... A motion guide... This can come in handy sometimes, it lets you move a tweened object on a line. Look at this example to see what I mean: |
Ok, first draw a Circle, then add 50 frames. Then right click on your layer and select Add Motion Guide. Also add 50 frames in the motion guide. Now draw a line inside the motion guide. |
Layer 1 |
Now it is actually very simple. Just enable Snap to Objects and create a motion tween in the Circle layer, if it is correct, the circle should now snap to the Motion Guide in the first frame (if it is close to it) if it doesn't, just drag the circle towards it. Now goto frame 50 in the Circle layer and insert a key frame, now draw the circle to the other end of the Motion Guide Line. Snap it to the line of course. Now play your animation, if it is correct, the Circle should now follow the motion guide. Note: Don't worry, the line from the Motion Guide wont show up in your movie. |
Well erm... That was it :D You mastered the motion guide! When you are animation you will see you wont use the motion guide too often, but it can come in handy sometimes. If you want to see a movie where I used Motion Guide's a lot, watch this movie of mine, all the fairy's are animated with motion guide. |
When Spring Arises |
When Spring Arises |
O yeah, here is the download file with the motion guide in it. But first try to make it yourself of course. |
Well, I hope your learned something from this :D |
Confused? Then start the tutorial! Once it is over, you wont be confused anymore. |
MMmm... Ok, masking, this is actually very simple, although it might sound harder then it is. With masking you have 2 layers, 1 layer with a drawing on it (the Masked layer) and 1 layer that is masking the other layer, only in the places where something is drawn in the mask layer, you can see stuff in the other layer. This is what you can do with it: |
MASKING |
MMmmm... How to start... Well... First draw something in the first layer. Like a building or something, doesn't matter, can even be a simple square. Now add a second layer and draw a circle in it. Now right click on the layer and select MASK from the menu. |
Ok... That was already the hardest part actually... Now just unlock the circle layer by click on the little lock next to the layer, now add some frames in both the layers, and tween the circle so that it passes the building. Now test your movie (control, Test movie) You will only see the masking in the editor itself if both the masked and the mask layer are locked. |
Congratulations! You have mastered Masking! |
You have now completed the BASICS part of the tutorial, you can now move on with more advanced stuff! |
SPRITES |
Ok, this part in the tutorial shows you how to make a sprite movie, and it gives you some tips about creating your own sprites. This is the biggest section of the tutorial, it plays for 2 minutes. Well, first you just need to get yourself some sprites, here are some good sites: http://tsgk.captainn.net/ http://panelmonkey.org/ Anyways, lets begin :D |
Ok, first off. Make a movie clip, you do that by going to: Insert, New Symbol, then select movieclip from the menu and click ok. A movieclip is basically a little movie that keeps repeating itself, so you can put, for example, a walking animation in it, and put the movieclip in your movie, so the walking animation keeps playing. Now Import your Sprite sheet you want into flash (I use mario sprites) |
Ok, now, there are 2 ways to cut out sprites, I will just show you the one that also deletes the white box some sprite sheets have, that is Trace Bitmap. Select the sprite sheet and do: Modify, Bitmap, Trace Bitmap, then set everything to 1,1 Few corners, Pixels (it will all become clear in the movie) Then click ok. Now you can delete the white stuff from the sprite sheet if it has a white box (my sheet doesn't, so I wont show that) Just click next to the sheet to de-select it and then click on the white and press delete to delete the white stuff. |
Now cut out the part of the sheet you need and delete the rest. Now you have a few sprites of the animation you are going to make, You need to leave one sprite there and cut the rest, add a empty key frame, and paste the sprites again. Now enable Onion Skinning, this makes you able to also see what was on other frames, set it so that you can only see the last frame and put the other part of the sprite sheet on the same place as the other sprite |
Put it on the same place |
This was a bit hard to explain with just text, but watch the video to see what I mean. |
Ok, now just make a couple of sprite movieclip's, for example, a walk and jump animation. Then also make a few background movieclip's and build a background, When you click Play Animation I will already have a Background and a few movieclip's made. Make sure your Background is in the lowest layer, now just put your walk animation in a layer above it, and tween it, then after a while, you can change it with a jump animation, I will all show it to you in the movie, that is easier then to explain it here. You access all the movieclip's you made trough the LIBRARY (Window, Library) |
Layer 2 |
Layer 1 |
Layer 3 |
Well, this way you can actually make a whole sprite movie, Just experiment a bit, in my opinion Sprites are great for beginner Flash users, I made a lot of my old movies with them. Anyways, Hope this helped. |
Well, that was it, The sprite section of this tutorial, it was by far the biggest section of this tutorial. I hope you learned something from it, now lets move on with the next subject! |
Ok, this part of the tutorial is much different from the other subjects in this tutorial. This subject isn't all animated, it is mostly plain text and screenshots, just like in any other tutorial, it was just better for a subject like this. I hope you don't mind. |
STICKS |
Sticks is very easy. You actually just draw them in frame by frame. But before you can do that, you have to ajust the Line Tools Thickness, you do that in the Properties Menu in the bottom of the screen. |
You can set a thickness between 0.25 and 10 there, most common is just setting it to 10 when you are making a stick movie, but it also depends on the height and with of your movie. |
Now... You draw a stick in the frame (not the head) You now create a new layer (more about layers in the tweening section of this tutorial) and draw a head inside it, and create the layer into a motion tween. This way we don't have to draw a new head in each frame, we can just tween the head. Anyways, now you make an empty key frame in the Stick layer (not the head layer) Select the first frame and press F7 to insert a empty key frame. Now enable Onion Skinning |
Ajust the Onion skinning so you can only look at the last frame (onion skinning makes you look at other frames) |
Now you can see the stick you drew in the other frame, now redraw your stick, in a slightly different pose. |
You can just use the arrow tool |
To drag the head of the stick. This way you can animate a stick... There is really nothing more to it. Now you understand why I explained it in a different way then in the other sections of the tutorial :P |
Welll.. Uhm... Thats it about sticks :P |
This section of the tutorial is just about customizing your layout, and adjusting some options in Flash, making a layout that fits the way you work is important, when you got a layout that suits you, you can really work a lot easier. I always just have a basic layout, I closed most of the windows like color editor, and I have the Main toolbar in the top enabled, this work fine for me. I will now show you how to change you layout. |
OPTIONS |
Well.. This is about they layout you first get when you open Flash MX 2004, the menu's on the side are probably opened, but I just closed them, to make it clearer what I'm doing. Ok, first, you can start by closing some menu's you probably wont need all the time, for beginners like you... lets close Project (right click on it, Close) Components, Component inspector and behaviors, I will only show how to close one in the movie, cause after that you know how to do it right :P and it saves me about 15 minutes of animating :P anyways. After that you can enlarge the menu's you need, like Color Mixer. Note: You can always open up the panels you closed by going to Window, Development panels. |
If you want, you can now hide this panel HERE But I wont do that right now, I will now show you how to Save this Layout, for later use, you can save more then 1 layout, so you can quickly change between them. Before you are going to dave the layout I would like to ask you to first open the MAIN TOOLBAR, I have it already opened in the window, its really handy, cause it has the Scale and Snap to objects functions on it, so you don't have to go into other menu's to enable those. You can open the MAIN TOOLBAR by going to: Window, Toolbars, Main, I already have this toolbar enabled, so I wont show in the movie how to open it. Anyways now onto saving your layout, this is very simple, just goto Window, Save Panel Layout, type a name for the layout, and it is saved. You can then open it in the Window, Panel Sets menu later on. |
Well, that was that for changing your layout, now some stuff about Flash Preferences, Well. There is not much to really Explain about it, I can really only show you how to open the Preferences Window, from there you can ajust some settings. Tip: Set the Undo Levels to about 500, not lower, cause when you really fuck up, you will need it. Not set it too high, cause that will make Flash run slow (Flash needs to remember all the previous actions you did) |
Just change some of the options around here. You can also goto other menu's inside the preferences menu. |
Mmmm... Now lets talk about shortcuts. Shortcuts can be really handy, when you know what they are, that's why you can look up what the shortcuts for different stuff is and where you can change them. Well, to do that you need to go to Edit, Keyboard shortcuts, Just go there to change all the hotkey's and stuff, all pretty standard |
Well, now onto the last part of this section. Adding extra options to your Tools, you can for example add a extra Pencil Tool to your Selection Tool. You can do things like this by going to Edit, Costomize Tool Panel |
Yay, another subjects Finished! Lets move on to the next! |
AUDIO |
Ok, onto audio, in my opinion audio is one of the most important things in a movie, especially movie, a very boring scene can turn into something awesome with the right music and sound effects. I will teach you here how to put audio in your Flash, there are some more options you can do with the audio, I will also teach you those. Note: Good sites for finding sound effects are: |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Impact" SIZE="18" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://www.findsounds.com">FINDSOUNDS.COM</A></FONT></P> |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Impact" SIZE="18" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://www.flashkit.com">FLASHKIT.COM</A></FONT></P> |
Ok, lets import a sound, goto File, Import, and select a sound file and click ok. You can now put it in the timeline, make a key frame on the place where you want it to start (the sound file will start on the place where the key frame is, if there are no key frames it will start in the beginning of the layer, and that's not what we want right :P) Then select the frame after the key frame and open up properties, then select the song where it says SOUND |
If you now test you movie, the songs/sound effect will play, but it will not stop at the end of all the frames, no, it will continue playing, that is because it is been set to EVENT sound, best in most occasions is to set it to stream, that makes the file size smaller cause it wont use the whole song (which event does) and it will be easier to sync your movie to the song, cause it will stop playing in the editor when you stop the movie, which it wont with event sound, that will just continue playing. Another thing, you can also make a song loop by selecting LOOP from the place where it says REPEAT now, or type a number where it says repeat. |
Stream |
Loop |
You can also make a song fade in or fade out, or some other stuff, you can select that in the Effect window, you can also fade a song yourself in certain parts or shorten the song, you do that by clicking on edit, you can then shorten it by dragging the Grey things (you will see what I mean in the movie) |
Well, that's about it for this section, there will also be something about audio compression in the Compression section later on. O yeah, here is a downloadable file with a sound in it... not that it will help you a lot, cause this was already damn easy, but I put it in here anyways :P |
YAY! We are done with this subject, now lets move on with the next one! |
BRIGHTNESS/ALPHA/TINT |
This section is about changing the Alpha (opacity) Tint and Brightness of an object. Its very easy, but you will probably need it a lot. Cause you already know how to make a tween and a movieclip, first a document with a Tween in it, doesn't What you do have to know is that you can only change the Brightness/Tin/Alpha of an object that is converted into a movieclip/button/graphics, or from a tween. So first make a document with a Circle tweened across the screen in it. This wont be shown in the movie. |
Well... Actually this is VERY simple, and wont take long to explain, just select the last frame of the tween, and open up properties. Then open up the Color Menu, you can select Alpha, Color, Tint or advanced from the menu. Alpha, Color and Tint don't really need any explanation. just ajust the percentage bar (with Tint just ajust the color) |
What does need (just a little bit) of explanation is the Advanced button. There you can as well change the Color as well as the alpha, just drag the Bars at the RGB and Alpha menu's. |

Well... Thats about it, you can just change the things there to create cool effects... yeah... Nothing more to it really. |
Well... um... easy eh? Now lets move on with the next subject! |
Actually this subject doesn't really belong in this tutorial, cause this tutorial is supposed to teach you flash, not how to do a certain effect in Flash, but it doesn't matter, cause this was the best way to teach you Soften Fill Edges With expand fill you can make cool effect like this: (which is what you are going to make now too :D) |
Light Effect |
Ok, first lets start by changing the background color, cause we cant see white on a white background right :P There are two ways to do it, you can just goto properties and set a color on the place where it says Background I prefer to do it like this though: Goto Modify, Document, and set the background color to Black. |
Now draw a very small white circle (very very very small) Make sure that you disabled the outline. |
Now select the circle and goto Modify, Shape, Soften Fill edges. Then set everything to 50, Expand, and press OK. Now convert the circle in a movieclip. |
Now just copy the Circle, and paste it, then stretch it, and make it small and put it over the other circle, now paste another circle, and rotate it 90 degrees, put it over the other circle as well. |
Well, is that a nice light effect or what :D |
Well, that's it about Light effect :D |
Ok, this is something a lot of n00bs seem to forget... Compressing their movie, the movie can be good, but because of it being poorly optimized it will still get blammed (how often do you blam stuff from newB's that is 5mb ? :P) Anyways, lets begin. |
COMPRESSION |
Ok, first lets open the export options. There are all sorts of options you can set there. Goto: File, Publish Settings |
Here you can select what you want to export you files as, mostly you will export as SWF, so make sure that one is enabled (you can only submit SWF to newgrounds and other sites) Also Windows projector would be a good choise, if you want to make your file downloadable or something. Now click on FLASH, so we can go change some compress options. |
Ok, here you can select all sorts of compress options. Flash version, always set as high as possible, for best compression. Protect from import, makes the SWF not importable with a password. Compress movie: You figure out what that does... lol :P Jpeg Quality: Set the quality of bitmap files in your flash, it wont harm PNG files. Audio, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, you can set the bit rate here, most common is to set it to Mp3 and to between 16kbps and 48kbps, not higher. Enable compressing here. Now you can click Publish to export it to the folder you Fla file was saved in. |
You can also set the bit rate of sounds individually (you then have to disable the audio compression in the Publish Menu. Anyways, you do that by going to your library, right clicking on a sound effect, Properties, Compression. You can select the audio compression option you want there. You can do the same thing with Bitmap images. |
You now know how to compress, yay! |
This was the last subject in this tutorial (apart from the secret one of course :P) Now go search for the easter eggs that is in the tutorial. |
:O You found the secret subject! Good job! Anyways, this section teaches you some extra options in Flash, like adding scenes etc... |
SECRET SUBJECT |
Ok, first let us insert a scene and modify the order of the scenes. You can insert a new scene by going to Insert, Scene Once you did that, goto Window, Design panels, Scene, there you can delete scenes and change the order of the scenes. |
What now, aaah... I know something. This only work for Flash mx2004 though, so if you use mx, this wont work, so you can just skip this part. Create a circle (not shown in the movie) and right click on it. Now select: Timeline effects, Effects, and select something from the menu. I select Drop down shadow, cause its easy to show in this tutorial ,all the other ones have animation in them. This one doesn't. |
Ok, last thingy I will teach you here. Smoothing objects (only works for drawings, not for movieclip's or bitmaps) Draw some sort of ugly form, select it, then press Straighten or Smooth, and see what happens, Smooth smooth's out the object, while straigh Straightens it. Smooth and Straighten are in the MAIN toolbar in the top of the screen, you enable it by going to Window, Toolbars main (also shown in the OPTIONS section of this tutorial) |

Well, Thats it! |
Well. Thats everything I had to tell you for this tutorial, untill next time! Now go look for the other Easter egg in the tutorial :D |
Cool, you found the first Easter eggs, anyways, its a little preview to a upcoming movie of mine, it is Mario's Revenge: SE, it is a remake of all the Mario's Revenge movies. I have been working on it since before I even started this tutorial, but I kinda dazzled of, so I haven't really worked on it for like 2 months. Here are some screenshots: |
