Welcome to the new flash beta tutorials! |
Click on the Next button above to begin! To the left you'll see the navigation bar. The extra links will take you to other helpful images that will aid in drawing parts of this tutorial. If any parts confuse you, refer to the text version of this tutorial. Text versions usually have more detailed explanations and occasionally more steps. Enjoy! |

Let's start with the head. Adding the horizontal and verticle guidelines will help you realize the position of the face later on. Below this are examples of different face positions, which you can picture already by looking at the guidelines. |
Next is to plan out the body motion through lines. This gives your image more of a dynamic flow than drawing a flat standing pose. Remember that limbs have curves and are only straight when supporting the weight of the character. |
Once you've planned out the body movement, start adding the curved plump areas, such as the stomach. |
Here's a more developed final sketch without the details. The cheeks and rounded head areas can be made by first drawing an oval to place where the curves will be. |
And finally, add the extra details such as toes, the tail, fingers, etc. |
You're now ready to continue onto the Outline Tutorial! |
Here are some of the most common leg positions. Notice how the blue sketch underneath each of them really helps shape the leg. |
Using a simple line structure can help you figure out the shape of an object. |
You can then draw the more rounded version above it, since you know the general shape. |
In cartoons the limbs tend to be exagerated. Above are some wrong and right examples of body flow. Of course this doesn't mean that a bland standing pose is bad, but it's a good habit to make your pictures seem more lively. |
I'm showing this part of the outline to give an example of line pressure. Note how the line goes from thin to thick. Line quality really brings out a picture, and adding pressure to certain areas will benefit you in the end. This doesn't mean you should go from thin to thick for every line, but try it in different areas until you find something you like. And yes, this line pressure will work for pencil drawings and online drawings. If you're using a program that doesn't have pen pressure, you can erase the end of a line to make it thinner, which is called tapering. |
The base colors are now in place and shading can begin. I placed that sun in the top corner to help me remember which areas will be shaded (the areas furthest away from the sun) |
I always block off the areas that will be shaded with shading outlines, as you can see in the picture. It's a method I found worked best for me. If you're more comfortable shading a different way, definitely keep at it. =} |
Here's the base coloring filled in. |
Most objects have back-lighting, where you can see the light reflecting from behind a shadow. I try to mimic that by adding light shades of color behind most of my shading. |
Finally, add some highlights to bring out the bright colors. For more help with choosing colors to shade and highlight with, go to the Color Choice page on Suta-Raito's Tutorial section. |
A final thing that brings the colors out is coloring the outline. You have to plan colors ahead if you want a colored outline on paper, but in programs you can draw lineart on separate layers and color it later. More about colored lineart for programs is in the programs section. |
