Welcome to my newgrounds tutorial! I am here to help everyone that has questions about newgrounds and about how it works. Feel free to click around and learn more about this awesome site! As you could see, the panel above this text is where the categories are, and I will try my best so that you could get a full understanding about how newgrounds works! Please note, you'll need a fully functional grounds gold account in order to do the stuff listed in this newgrounds guide, and remember, Tom and Wade Fulp are the admins of this site! |

Whenever you try to view a movie on newgrounds.com, you'd see 6 faces with numbers marked 0-5 on them. What are they? They are used for rating movies. If it's a quality movie, vote 2-5. If it isn't, vote 0-1. But you seriously have to learn how to vote fairly on movies and games. Keys to voting: Put yourself in the Flash author's shoes. How much work would you estimate he/she put into it? How long do you think he/she spent making it? Do others vote high on this movie? If they do, should I? No, you shouldn't. If you vote high on a movie/game, you're helping out the flash author, and by doing that, you're encouraging him/her to make more flash work. But, if it's UBER crap, or it's offensive to you, then you should vote as low as you want. Because newgrounds is constantly filled with crap, and it's your duty as a Ng member to help out by voting on whatever you think is fair. Remember, by voting, you are judging someone elses work, and you should judge properly based on it's plot, humor, style, graphics, sound, and the length of the content. Try reading the reviews written on that flash movie. Are they good? If they are, you'd find out that other people enjoyed it. Let's move on and learn more about voting! |
2 of 2 |
Under judgement content: You'd see them on the very top of the first column of the NG portal. What do they mean? They are the newest submissions to the site and they need atleast 200 votes to pass judgement. You should vote on these movies to get blam and protection points. Blam and protection points are points you get when you vote correctly on under judgement movies. Let's say, you'd find a horrible movie under judgement. If you click 0-1, you would lower the score, meaning you'd want to have this submission deleted. If you think it's quality and it entertained you in any sort of way, by all means click 2-5. If the movie is deleted and you voted a 0-1, you'll get a blam point set on your profile. If it's blammed and you clicked 2-5, then you would not get a blam point. Now if a movie is saved, and you voted 2-5 on it then you'll get a protection point. If a movie is saved and you voted 0-1, you do not get a protection point. Other submissions: Now you'd notice the different colors of content in the portal. When the submission has a grey box around the submission, that means it's currently under judgement. When it doesn't have a box around it at all it means it got a score of 1.60-2.99. If it has a green box around it, it means it has a current score of 3.00-3.49. If it has a blue box around it it means it has a score of 3.50- 4.00+. If a submission is red, it means it's going to be deleted with one more blam vote. Look at the submission key on the top. This was the basics of voting. If you wish to learn more about how you could effect the movies more, click the Ranks button next to the voting button on the top panel. |

Ranks/ Levels: Newgrounds has a complex voting system. If you want to affect the content you vote on more, you have to start depositing your experience points per day. Now you'll need 10 EXP points per day in order to deposit. Every piece of content you vote on would get you 2 experience points. Now on the bottom, you'll notice several pictures of hands wielding different things. These signify your LEVEL to users who view your profile or see your posts on the BBS. Every new NG member starts off with a hand holding a lolly pop. |
2 of 3 |
There are 30 levels total. In which you need different amounts of experience points to get. Here are the rest of the levels: |
3 of 3 |
Auras: Auras aren't another sort of level. As you can see in the pictures of the levels, there were green, blue, and red. It's like this- Neutral: (Green) It means that you vote fairly on a submission. Light: (Blue) It means that you vote better than you should on a submission. Dark: (Red) It means that you vote low on majority of submissions. It takes time and patience to gain experience points, so start racking them up! |
Writing reviews: So let's say you watched a decent movie on newgrounds. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. You want to give the author critisism and encouragement in order for more improvement. Well, that's simple. You click the write a review button somewhere on top of a recent review and it takes you to the review writing screen. Now don't be a total asshole. You'd want to construct the authors ego, and give him encouragement to improve, not to tell him to fuck off and die in a hole. You could get banned from doing that. List all of the authors good and bad points and tell him/her where he/she went wrong. You have to be nice and if you don't have anything constructive to leave in a review, don't write one at all! It's that simple. You'd notice fields that say Graphics Style Sound Violence Interactivity Humor Overall. You have to open the drop menu and click the appropriate number according to what they've put into the content. Let's say it's a game. You could change characters, levels, boosts, guns, all sorts. You'd have to give the author some points for interactivity. If it has good music with realistic sound effects, you must give him points for sound. If it is funny as hell, you must give him points for humor too. Y'see, you have to write reviews according to what they've presented to you, don't put all fields 0 and tell the author to die and go to hell. That's just wrong and you could get review banned. But if the content is total crap, then you have to be a good reviewer and gie him constructive critisism. Once you've written your review and the author saw it, he could feel free and respond to your review. Don't use inappropriate or hateful language in reviews, and DON'T respond to someone elses review. You're reviewing the content, not someone elses review. If you write spam reviews just so you'd get a high review count, there is a possibility you could get banned. Also, no posting about your website in reviews or any HTML tags because you'd be risking your account. |
Flagging: Newgrounds has been filled with spam, and crap, but it is also filled with malicious content. It could either be hateful, pornographic, pop ups, stolen, or even a virus. You must be careful when viewing these sort of submissions. You can only flag a submission when it is under judgement. The common term for flagging submissions is known as 'blowing the whistle'. The picture underneath this text shows where you can flag a submission breaking the rules. If you flag a submission properly, you will get a point. If you get enough points, your whistle level will increase. But, if you fail to flag submissions properly, your whistle level will go down to garbage. The different whistle ranks are on top of this text box. The highest whistle rank is obviously Deity. If an inappropriate submission passes judgement, you should email Wade or Tom Fulp immediatly. Their email addresses are: tom@newgrounds.com and wade@newgrounds.com Make sure the subject is entitled "Newgrounds help" or they may not receive it. |

Submitting content: If you want to contribute into the NG community by submitting one of your flash works, projects, then do so. But you MUST follow the rules in submitting. |
Rule #1: Don't steal someone elses work. That's just not cool, and odds are it will be flagged. Rule #2: Don't make an animation that is hateful towards a group/ user. It will be flagged, and you may get banned. Rule #3: Don't EVER submit test movies into the portal that are short and useless, as an NG user, I see this alot! Rule #4: If your submission got blammed, don't re-submit it without improving it. Rule #5: Rate your submission appropriately. Don't put 'excessive violence' when there's barely any. Rule #6: Don't submit useless shit just so that people would score a blam point off your work. Rule #7: Don't swap your entries with something different than the original. Your account would be at risk if you do. There are plenty more rules that can be found at the bottom of this page: Remember, you should follow thesr rules in order to get a good scoring submission that everybody loves. |
