Getting around FL Studio

When you first open FL Studio this will
probably be the first thing you notice.
This is where it all happens. It is the

Channels section of FL Studio and is
used for making patterns with sounds
and samples ect.

MAIN

FL Studio panels are located at the top of
the screen in the Tool Bar area, and
provide quick access to many commands
and options.

Here you can alter things like tempo,
pattern, grid ect. As you can see where
it says 'SNAP' I have Cell selected. This
makes it easier to keep your songs on
beat when making patterns.

The bar above 'CPU' indicates how
much PC usage FL studio is
occupying. Sometimes this can
be an issue if your PC is slow.
That's all I will go into on these
panels for the moment.

Down the left hand side of FL
Studio is located the browser
which can be used for simple
navigation to all your favourite
sounds, loops, samples and
more.
A handy search feature is also
included, just click on the symbol
on the left of the arrow that
points up located in the top left
of the browser. A drop down
window will appear and at the top
you will see 'Find' and 'Smart
Find'

The Main Panel. Here is where the
menu bars are located for things
such as: Save, Open, Export ect.
You can gain access to a
database of all your VST plugins
via the CHANNELS menu or open
up things such as Piano Roll or
Mixer from View.

Note: I am not JonathonShore.

Piano Roll -  This is where you can make patterns for  your audio. Here I have
simply created the first half of 'Mary had a little lamb'.

This is the Play List section
where you can bring all
your patterns and samples
ect together to make a
song.
Unlike in Piano Roll, the
patterns are now the keys
and the 1, 3 ,5 ect up the
top is the seconds.

And last but not least we have the mixer. Here you can add great effects (FX)
to your sounds, song, audio ect. Whatever it is your doing with FL Studio.
I apologise for the quality of this picture but it had to be shrunk to fit into
this window.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Below is the the channels
box, with the default drum
sounds alocated a channel
each: Kick, Clap, HighHat
and Snare.

Ok now that you know your
way around FL Studio on a
basic level, it's time to start
learning how to use it.
Begin by creating a new flp
file: File>New. An flp file is
the format in which your FL
project will be saved.
Once you have created your
new flp file we can get to
work.

The channels box will be set
to Pattern 1 as seen in the
panel to the left. And the
tempo will be 140.000.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

I wont go into all the features of the
channels section though I will take
you through the main ones.
1.

2. Speaker balance
3. Channel volume
4. Sound being used in the channel
5. Currently selected channel
6. This is where the notes are placed

1. Turns channel on and off

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

We will begin by creating a
simple drum pattern which uses
each default channel in pattern
1 as shown in the diagram
below.

Make sure that next to the play
button that 'PAT' is selected as
shown below (Small box
coloured orange). This means
that it will play the pattern when
you press play.

To place a beat simply
click the bubble where
you want it placed.

Note: The default
snare is normally
very quiet. Turn
the volume to full
as show on the
left.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Try to adjust the tempo of your pattern
you just created by clicking on the box
above 'TEMPO' and rolling your mouse
forward. Doing this will speed it up,
however if you drag the mouse down
back towards you, the tempo will be
slowed down.

A slower tempo of 78.000

A faster tempo of 215.000

Also try playing around with
the other features like the
individual channel volume and
balance controls ect.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

There are various ways of
inserting a sound into a
channel. In this part I will show
you how to add more sounds
instead of just the default
drums.

#1.  Right click one of the
boxes with the sound
written in it, for the example
on the left I have right
clicked 'Kick'

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll..

After right clicking one of the channel sound names and
opening out the drop down menu, continue to 'Insert'. You
may notice mine looks different to yours as I have mine set
up a bit differently.

However if you look at yours
you should recognise 'FL
Keys', 'BooBass' and 'TS04
bassline synthesizer'
Select FL keys.

BooBass is a great bass sound
and FL Keys a fine piano sound.
And well I don't really like TS04
but it can still be used for lot's of
things.

If you insterted FL Keys correctly,
your channels should now look
like this:

The two box's with the piano's
and dials that popped up arn't
important right now. Close
them.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

#2. Personnaly this is my favourite
way of inserting a new channel.
Down the left hand side you will
see the browser. If not click the 'SB'
button located at the top right of FL
Studio.

Now to use the search
feature I mentioned
earlier. Click on the icon
at the top left of the
browser.

It looks like 3 small horizontal bars
with a large 4th one on top.

In the drop down menu
click on 'Find' and a
small box will appear in
which to type your
search.

Or just use the command Alt + F

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Type what type of instrument you wish to find in the search box and hit enter.
Fl Studio will scan all the files in the browser and direct you to the chosen
sound. For example: Type in laser into the search box and hit enter.

You will be directed to the
sound 'Laser'.

To insert laser into a new channel
right click and select 'Open in new
channel'

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

#3. This way is my least favourite
way of inserting a new sound,
however it can still be usefull  for
finding things.

First begin by clicking one of the
channel names, I recomend clap
as using this feature replaces the
current channels sound instead
of opening up a new channel.

If you have done this correctly
the Channel Settings box
sould have opened up:

I have cut the bottom off as
you need not worry about
all that right now.

Note: Only do it this way if
you want to replace a
chanel.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

The next thing to do is click on
the folder icon below 'SMP' and
to the left of 'DNC_Clap_5.wav'

A new window should have
opened up like the one on the
left. I apologise for the quality,
but it had to be shrunk to fit,

Now go up one level (For you
Windows Noobs that's this
button)

You should now find yourself in
the 'Packs' folder as show on
the left.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Let's replace the Clap with a crash
symbal. Go into the folder labelled
'FPC' as seen below.

Then proceed through to the folder
'Cymbals'. It should be at the top
as is the picture to the right.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

You should now be in a
similar looking forlder to
the one on the right.

You will notice that if you
click on one of the names,
for instance:
'FPC_Crash_G16InLite_05
it will play the sound.

Try clicking a couple to
see which one you like,
then double click the one
you like best to insert it
into the channel 'Clap'

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

As you can see in the picture below
I have chosen the cybmal
'FPC_Crash_G18InMed_02.wav' as
it isn't too loud and it has a nice
ring to it.

The channel that used to be 'Clap' should now look like this.

Overall your pattern should now look
like this and you should be ready to
move on to making a new pattern.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

There are two main ways to get
to a new pattern.
#1. Hover your mouse over the  box
above the word 'PAT'. If your still
unsure to where it is, look at the
picture below.

Next, click and hold while the
cursor is still over the box and
move your mouse forward.

You will notice that the number in
the box will change to a higher
number depending on how far
forward you rolled your mouse, and
that the channels box is now blank
again (No beats/notes placed).

#2. This is the easier way of
accessing a new pattern. Simply
make sure the channels box is
brought to front as shown to the
right.

Not brought to front

Brought to front

This  can simply be done by
clicking anywehre in the
channels box. I normal just
click the top dark grey bar.

Now all that's left to do is press the
left arrow key located on your
keyboard to take you accross to a
new pattern.

The pattern box should now say
2 as shown on the right and your
channels should all be blank as
shown below.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Now that we have our drum pattern
complete and have opened up a new
pattern, we can begin to learn how
to make a tune.

We will start by opening up Piano
Roll. Click on the button labelled
'PR' at the top right of FL Studio.

It's the middle one for those
still strugling.

This box below should pop up.
This is Piano Roll. An essential
piece to making music with FL
Studio.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

To make things easier make sure
'SNAP' is set to 'Cell' as shown above.

At the top of Piano Roll
set it to Keys as shown
below.

To bring up the drop down menu
just click on the instrument name
which in this case is 'Kick'.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Now that Piano Roll is set to keys it's time to make a melody. Copy the first half
or 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' as shown below. You will notice that when you
place a note, you will hear it aswell.

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Now close Piano Roll and you will notice the channel with FL Keys in pattern
2 looks different as seen below.

If so far so good, go across to pattern 3 and open up piano roll, and then select
'Laser'. It should now look like this at the top:

Operating Channels, patterns & Piano Roll

Now to make a pattern with 'Laser' that will fit with 'Mary Had A Little Lamb'

What I have done in the example below is simply made the same melody but
all with one beat bars.

Basic FX & Mixer

Now that you have your patterns you might want to think about adding some
cool effects otherwise known as FX.

Let's start by adding a Reverb effect to your FL Keys pattern. Start by opening
the Keys Channel Settings.

Next, see the box in the top right that
has 'FX' written under it? Click and
hold on it then move it up to 1.

It should now look like this:

The next thing to do is click the button in the top right of FL Studio that says
'FX' as shown above right.

The box shown below should pop up, only much larger  as this image has
been shrunk to fit.

You will notice 'Instert 1' is the
highlighted column as shown
below. This is because in FL
Keys Channel Settings we
moved the FX box from 0 to 1.

If we were to leave it on 0,
when an effect is added, it
would have effected every
channel/pattern.

Moving it to one, limit's the
effect to FL Keys as the first
column in the mixer is the
'Master' column.

For this tutorial we wont worry
about all the rest of the dials
and such in Mixer, all I will do is
show you how to add an effect
to a channel.  So let's add that
reverb.

To the right of the mixer you will
notice this panel:

This is just the first 3 of 8 bars.

To insert an effect, click on the
down arrow in 1 then proceed to
'Select' in the drop down menu.

When you bring your mouse over select, a large list of effects will pop out the
side. In the picture below I have cut of the top and bottom of this list but you
should recognise this as the lower section.

Select Reverb from the
list as shown below.

Bar one should now look like
this:

And the box shown to the
right should have popped
up.

If you press play up the top
you may notice a slight
change in the sound.

Now try turning the dial in the bottom
right 'Reverb' from 20% to 70% and
press play. Cool huh?

If you wish to add an effect to another channel all you have to do is go to that
channels settings and change the FX box to 2 and if you wish to add effects
to yet another channel, change the FX box in Channel Settings to 3 and so on
and so forth.

Using Play List

Now for  putting the audio  together. So we've made our patterns  and even
applied an effect to Fl Keys and we are now ready to make it all into a short
tune.

Start by opening Play List by clicking on the button in the top right of FL
Studio that says 'PL'.

When Play List is open you  will
notice a block is placed in the
first bar of 'Main automation',
you need not worry about this. It
is nothing important, just delete
it.

As we have only created 3 patterns, drums, keys and laser, we need only
concentrate on the first 3 bars going down in Play List. The bars down the
side are the patterns and the numbers along the top represent time.

Before we start, remember:
- Pattern 1 is the drum beat
- Pattern 2 is the FL Keys
- Pattern 3 is the Laser.

Place a block in cell one as is done in the picture below and press play.

You will notice that the orange triangle will move across the block but
no sound will play. This is because you need to change it from 'PAT' to
'SONG' as showm below.

Now if you press play it will play pattern 1 for one cell. Place a few more blocks
in the cells along line 1 to lengthen the drum pattern as shown below.

Note: Freshly placed blocks will
appear in a pinkish colour.

Now add in some bars along the pattern 2 line like in the picture below.

Now press play. You should by now be getting the idea of how this works.
Time to add the Laser. Place bars in the cells along the pattern 3 line where
you want the laser to come in like in the picture below.

When you press play and it reaches the end you will find it loops.
Don't worry about that, it won't do it in the final product.

Now using those 3 patterns in Play List make them into a tune using
the methods you have just learned like in the picture below.

Now when you play it, the patterns will come in in the order placed and you have
got yourself a little tune. If you have followed every step of this tutorial you
should find that this is quite dull and repedative as it's just the first part to 'Mary
Had A little Lamb'.

With knowing how to use Channels, Piano Roll, Play List and FX (The basics) you
will find you can make virtually anything. This tune was merely a small sample of
the diversity of FL Studio.

Converting the final product

Ok, now for the fun part. To export the song.  When  you export
the song, you can either do it as Zipped Loop Package, MP3 or
MIDI. In this tutorial i'm just going to show  you how to do it  as
MP3.

First, double check your song to make sure it's all how you want it, things like
patterns, FX ect. Then go to File>Export>MP3.

A Save As box will open up, choose where you wish to save the song
and what you want to call it.

Once you have done that
this box will pop up.

All you have to do now is press Start. Don't
worry about all that other junk. It's not really
important to you right now.

The finished product!
