To the crew of the NSEA Demosthenes,
I realize the past year aboard this vessel has been trying, to
say the least. I am also keenly aware of how anxious you all are to
make Planetfall.
But I must stress that we still have 2 weeks left before we
reach orbit. In these remaining 2 weeks, I expect you to comport
yourself in a manner that befits officers of your station. If I hear
word or perceive any personnel becoming lax in their duties, I will
address the matter swiftly.
Suffice to say, we are not out of the woods yet.
That is all.

Subject: Planetfall

Regrettably, the Planetfall Party scheduled for Thursday has
been canceled due to the new orbital recalculation. No plans are in
the works to reschedule (so stop asking, Dominic!), but I would like
to take the time to thank all the people that put so much time and
energy into making it the success I know it would have been. So
thank you Mei, John D, John U, Catherine, Nate, and Kelly!
Special thanks goes out to Marisa for her tireless efforts to
make a Demo-shaped cake with. . . mixed results. A big hand to
Quentin for eating the results with such gusto. Give him a visit in sick
bay when you have the chance.
Again, apologies to all, but that just means an even bigger
party when we hit firma.

Mr. Williams, I thought I was quite emphatic when I forbade

without the atavistic distraction of shiny, shiny tinsel.

Upon further consideration, I may have been overzealous in
canceling the Planetfall Party. Sometimes I take the crew and their
labors for granted, and for that I apologize. Alex, your tireless
efforts onboard the Demosthenes have not gone unnoticed, and for

And nothing about this transmission struck you as particularly
odd, crewman?
Granted the tone was oddly. . . contrite, but I didn’t think an
apology from you was utterly beyond the realm of belief.

Now you know better.
This is clearly a hack, though I am at a loss as to how these
forgeries slip by you time and time again.
But since the word is already out (and I will not be branded a
liar) you may continue with the party as my doppelganger has
proposed.
In the future, Mr. Williams, forward all emails from me that
contradict any orders previously given. It appears I will have to stay
one step ahead of myself.

Subject: Phantom email

I have been receiving sporadic reports of logkeeping break-ins
and forgeries. While I do not want this to take priority over your
current duties, please address the matter with whatever free time
you have available.

Nope.
The logkeeping network is setup to prevent viral infection. It
was never designed to block a rank-amateur with too much free
time on his hands. Hell, it's not even designed to give open access to
the data blocks. So even if I wanted to, I couldn't read a single thing
he wrote, let alone trace the message to source. One of your
policies to gain a .2% increase in adaptive memory. But since the
system's bogged to high holy hell, a .2% gain seems a bit
shortsighted, wouldn't you say?
Lower the access cap for system access. You'll drop Admem
fragmementation down from 99.6% to 75%.
At the very least, people will be able to do their jobs.

Lowering the cap is not an option.
Now, if we have already plumbed the shallows of your
imagination, just reboot the logkeeping server.

Look, I reboot and here's what you'll get for your troubles: a
bogged down mainframe, a lot of pissed off people grappling with
new 20-digit passwords, and more of these "attacks" within the
week.
Lowering the cap will take 2 seconds. Rebooting the server
will take 2 days.
Then it appears you have your work cut out for you.

I don't seem to recall this much backlash and malaise in the
simulator

-And as the Demosthenes fumbles its way down like an old
man in a bath of ice-water, they will all collectively point and say,

I know we’ve already spoken this week for our standard
Sitrep, but I just wanted to address a matter that has been gnawing
at the Board and the shareholders. While this is not strictly off the
record (what is these days), it is something I wanted to discuss with
you in private.
The Demosthenes is not on schedule. It has not been for a
while. The Antiphon and Hypereides have all ended their respective
tours. Even the Lysias, which launched a month behind you, is now
three days from geosync.
What I’m trying to say is there’s a lot riding on this flight, and
we have all put a great deal of faith in you.
If the timetable needs to be expanded, please let us know.


Sir,
Thank you for your candor and your continued support.
Admittedly, there have been some growing pains for the
Demosthenes. But my crew is exceptional and spirits could not be
higher. In fact, we just celebrated a Planetfall Party in honor of our
tremendous efforts.
Yes, you have put a great deal of faith in me, and I will repay
that faith with the exemplary results you have come to expect from
all NSEA Commanders. Expanding the timetable will not be
necessary.
Please inform the Board that I will reach Planetfall not only on
time, but ahead of schedule.

Can you do that, Commander?

The Demosthenes will make Planetfall in 7 days.

Subject: Status of the Demosthenes

You can't be serious.
We’re the security detail, not the nanny.
Curfew is going to push an already irate crew into the red, and
I’m certainly not equipped to deal with that. Either come up with a
new (read: better) solution to keep your people on track, or lock
them at their stations and throw away the key.

I am sorry you feel ill-equipped to do your job, Chief.

I'm sorry your eyesight is failing.
I am excellent at my job, Commander. But I am not a genie in
a bottle. I cannot wish the crew to fall in line anymore than I can
voodoo-doll this ship ahead a few ten thousand kilometers, much to

Subject: Can't be done

As you are no doubt aware, there has been a new lockdown
feature added to all workstation bulkheads. Some of you found out
the hard way trying to leave Engineering, only to find yourselves
locked in the for the night (though I hear Jabari made the best of it
by programming a campfire screensaver. Great job!).
Lockdown is another addition to curfew which was,
unfortunately, not discussed during yesterday’s ship-wide meeting.
Commander West apologizes for those who were inconvenienced
during the trial run of the system. New duty rosters are in your
inboxes, as well as a timetable for curfew rest and work periods.
Please study these, as they will be in effect immediately, and will
last until Planetfall.
Curfew also means that rec hours on Obvs and Payload Bay
social hour will be suspended indefinitely. In all likelihood, this too
will continue until Planetfall. As ever, I will let you know if this
situation changes.
Just remember, 2 weeks and then we can all rest easy.

Subject: New lockdown feature

Goddamit!! Adam, you have got to help me out here.
I had everything all set up in the Projects/Shared_Research
folder. Data, calculations, reports. Immaculate. I go to execute the
damn thing and it BLOWS UP IN MY FACE. Everything got corrupted.
Everything! You can't even open the files through the old Xerxes
interface.
Fortunately I backed up my work but if I hadn't, that's a year's
worth of research up in digital goddamn smoke. Three hundred and
sixty five days GONE.
You have GOT to fix this. I am this close to screaming my
head off and smashing this monitor to bits

First of all, calm down Wartz. Believe it or not, you're in good
company. A lot of people are complaining about corrupted files.
Kevin had half his work destroyed. Christine can't even boot up and
Erin is just sitting there like an moron waiting for the boot sectors to
clear while throwing her hands to the sky crying, "Why?!".
Well, I know why. The Mark II's were always a little twitchy.
Did you know some systems in Aft are using Mark I's? No joke!
Hardware from whole different eras are trying to interface with
each other, and they're all hearing gobbledygook.
It's the network. The system is way over capacity with code
that was bubblegummed in there. That's what happens when you
build a state-of-the-art ship on old system architecture. It's like
building a skyscraper on top of Pompeii.
But if you think you have it rough, I hear Engineering almost
had a back-burn from the reactor. A nuclear reactor shunting off
excess energy will put you off your day, let me tell you.
But I'm not one to gossip.

And what in the world would give you the impression I would
give a GOOD GOD DAMN about ANY of that?

Subject: Corrupted files!

Diego, the latest data patch you gave me is good, it’s just not
great. You’ve got us coming in just shy off the equatorial orbit
margin, putting us 5500 kilometers off the marker. Normally, I’d let it
slide since it’s within the green, but the Commander is really coming
down hard on us to get these done quickly and accurately (and no, I
didn’t tell her she can have one but not both).

neither bend nor break to suit her needs. Given current gravitational
constraints (and the fact I had to do most of it by hand), it's the best
I can do.
I am well aware of the gravitational constraints and the
network status, Martinez, having already generously plotted the

weeks to make Planetfall. We can do better. I know we can.

Subject: Are we in trouble?

We have a situation.
Cables for the reactor run outside the ship for temperature
regulation before eventually weaving back in. When the core is
pushed particularly hard, the cables overheat and expand (within
expected variances).
One of these cables wraps around the tertiary nitrogen cell.
When it overheated beyond tolerance, it cracked the cell frame. Our
nitrogen simply. . . boiled away. Not all of it, but enough.
Commander, we no longer have enough breathable air to
survive the flight to Planetfall.

even pays attention to the Barrett Scenario anymore. It's too cruel

Commander, here are my projections.
According to my calculations, we have enough air to last
about 10 days. That will put us approximately 10,000 kilometers
from Planetfall.
With the crew. . . incapacitated, the ship will drift into a high
orbit before eventually burning up upon reentry nearly half a century
later.
At our current velocity, it is impossible for any ship to dock
with us, even if there were any in the vicinity. There are not enough
fuel reserves to initiate a fast burn, and definitely not enough to
come out of it. The lifeboats have an effective time index of 3 days,
which would put them roughly 20,000 kilometers from Planetfall by
end index. There is no realistic or theoretical way to generate
usable nitrogen.
Having said that, I have found something of particular note.
While it is true we will not survive long enough to make Planetfall…
32 of us can.
The Demosthenes can still make Planetfall. Just not all of her.

Jesus. That's half the crew.
How much time before I have to make a decision on the final
32?

Point of No Return (PNR) is seven days from now. After that, it
won’t matter who stays and who goes.
There won’t be enough air for anyone.

would be quite the understatement to say this situation is less than

such, the decision on the final 32 will be just that. Final. No
exceptions.
One parting note, I am canceling the blackout on all ship-to-
shore transmissions. If you have anything you wish to say to your
loved ones, now would be the time.

We've run the numbers and we are in full agreement with
your Chief Engineer. Dividing the crew is the only viable option. I wish
to God I had better news, but I don't.

Having said that, the crew is performing admirably well under

it, there simply is no alternative.

state-of-the-art 6 billion dollar ship. Isn't there some kind of
contingency? A backup plan? I mean, they run simulations all the
time. How could this be happening on an Ecclesia class ship? This is
insane.

into the Reactor Room, naked as the day they were born. Or
perchance a game of Russian roulette with an arc-welder? We
could place bets to pass the time until Planetfall.
The very least Commander West can do is tell us how we are
going to die.
And she does not think enough of us to grant even that small

The Commander knows she cannot land the Demosthenes
without pilots. So we go on strike. We refuse to do anymore
calculations, course adjustments, or helming until we are exempt
from the Lottery. She will have to put us on Alpha.

There are three pilots onboard. Two could easily do the
calculations within a fair margin of error. Or, as you are no doubt
aware, one senior-level Pilot, such as myself.
What the hell is the matter with you? Do you want to die out

But my occupation should not be the dividing line. We're all
dying out here, Diego. The very least we can do is be somewhat
civil and humane about it.

Having said that, isn't it a wonderful stroke of luck that she

West is a danger to the crew. Three, that Commander West can no
longer perform her duties to a sufficient level either through loss of
mental capacitance or disability. If you can prove any one of the
three, and I can empirically verify, I will be forced to relieve her of
Command based on NSEA regulation 31.1.
Well, that's the problem Doc. Nobody can get to her. She's
locked herself in her room. She won't come out for anyone or
anything. Can't you... force her to take a psych evaluation or a

officer. There are minor issues like killing the "loyalists" in the crew
and fashioning a suitable lie for NCOM to hear... but the cold core of
your mutiny requires one dead Commander.
So I made you believe I was in here, cowering in fear while
you trampled through my ship. And now you and your compatriots
are right where I need you to be.
But where are my manners? I haven't answered your question.
I couldn't lock down life-support, you've already taken it. What I
could do was change how life-support functions locally. The system
merger I created links the air supply for the entirety of the
Command Adjunct. From my office to the corridor you are floating in
presently. We are all breathing the same air. Oh, and I've also taken
the liberty of dropping the blast doors. I don't want people
wandering off. My crew's loyalty, of late, has been suspect.
So if I kill you I kill myself. Curious.

Subject: Just like old times

PNR is here.
I've done some things. Things I can never take back. Things
that will stay with me until the end of my very short days.
But you need to know what happened here.
I've gone through logkeeping. All of it. I've compiled and
collated the most relevant messages for you. The system should
start filtering as soon as logkeeping boots up.
It's not the whole story, but you'll understand what happened
to the Demosthenes. What happened to us.
As for what will happen to us... I don't know. All I can do is
collect our murmurs and echoes.

[Priority One] Subject: Remember us

I've always been interested in finding new ways to tell a story.
I suppose in the strictest sense, the project started there.
But in the more traditional sense, it all started after I heard an
audiobook of Arthur C. Clarke's short story Breaking Strain. In the
story, two spaceship pilots suffer a catastrophic breach in their air
supply. After a panicky interlude, the two men realize that both of
them can not survive the flight home, but one of them can.
The idea intrigued me.
I started playing out variations in my head. What about a crew
of two dozen? What about fifty, or a hundred? How would the story
change?
Conceptually, Planetfall began right about there.
But before that particular mental spark, I've always wanted to
tell a story entirely through logs or journal entries or something of
the like (Epistolary is the word my auteur friends would gift). One
day these two ideas collided with each other and it was like
smashing chocolate into peanut butter: You couldn't imagine them
apart.
A sci-fi story about ordinary people in extraordinary crisis told
through messages. Sounded good. Sounded real good. So I sat
down, hammered out some rough outlines, drew a few mood
boards, and a rather incomprehensible amount of time later, I had
Planetfall.
...But not the Planetfall you see before you today

Subject: Origin Story

Planetfall as a medium... as a motif has not changed one iota
since its inception. Planetfall as a story is damn near unrecognizable
from its original drafts. The change can be blamed and praised on a
personal life which, much like the crew of the Demosthenes, had
more problems than it had solutions. In a very un-Burnett like fashion
(my life and my work tend to keep wildly different schedules), I
used my internal strife to fuel my work. Without it, I suppose I would
have never stumbled upon the story's Aesopian morale.
Do I believe my own message? I don't know. Sometimes
Planetfall seems like a work of self-loathing. A transparent attempt
to find meaning in the meaningless. At other times, it feels like an
act of mercy. . . as if I am redeeming myself by adding a happy
little ending to a revisionist's history.
Maybe a cigar is just a cigar. Who knows.
It doesn't matter what made Planetfall work. The point is, at
least in my mind, it does work. Planetfall is about all of us. Our
goals. Our obstacles. All the great and terrible somethings that lie in
shadow between the two.
It's about failing to succeed. And through failure: success.

Subject: The Takeaway

Planetfall is my brainchild, but without the true philanthropy of
certain people, I don't think it would be nearly as successful as it is
at present. My sincerest thanks to everyone who contributed their
haunting features and insightful criticisms.
And, lest I forget, thank you for reading. It has always been
in your honor. To entertain and inspire. What else is there?

Subject: And before I forget-

I will freely admit that Planetfall took much longer to make
than it should have. But during its creation, I the person went through
quite a bit of living, and as such, I the artist changed. Here is a list of
the major landmarks on the long, strange road to reaching Planetfall
-Planetfall was originally called Breathe, but the title was
deemed too... effeminate, and was abandoned. Nonetheless, the
concept of breathing lead to the design of the NSEA logo: a rib cage
with light in the center as the symbolic breath.
-Celine and her sister Marisa were originally bitter rivals. But
this left Celine without a way to show her softer humanity. So I
reversed the arrangement, and had Marisa as the Commander's best,
perhaps only friend.
-Diego was a minor character through much of Planetfall's
development. As the story started to take on shape, Diego
transformed from throw-away ancillary character to main antagonist.
-Diego had no one to talk to in early iterations, making him just
a vague malevolent force. Daniella was created for the express
purpose of fleshing out Diego's character.
-Very early in development Papa West was slated to make
an appearance in Act III. I can't for the life of me remember why he
was taken out
-Sanjay Maharaja is listed on the Final 32. Sanjay was the
original name for Diego, but I was always dissatisfied with the idea
of perpetuating the vilification of middle-eastern peoples.
Fortunately, a young lady I was courting at the time ran afoul of me,
so I turned her name from Denise into Diego, and she/he became
the villan. Also, Denise had a bit of an upper-lip hair thing going on,
so the transition was a relatively smooth one.
-There are other girls mentioned by name that I have dated
and have since demonized in story-form for my own jeuvenile and
petty amusement. Lacy suffers second degree burns. Jaymi tries to
bribe the Commander with 6 million dollars. And Tatiana gets
attacked by the mutineers.
-The unofficial poll of male readers cite that the model for
Marisa West is the most lusted after
-And yes, the model for Marisa West is exceptionally hawt :)

Subject: Behind the scenes

Planetfall is rife with outside references and jokes so inside,
the punchline only exists in my head. So here, for your amusement
(?) is the list of Planetfall's easter eggs. This list is, for the most part,
spoiler-free.
-The name of the ship, The Demosthenes, is taken from the
pseudonym Valentine Wiggan uses in the novel Ender's Game,
perhaps my favorite book of all time.
-The schematic for the maintence readout is an electronic

-In The Party, Quentin Summers tells Marisa that there's
nothing for Communication to do doing a recalc, so he's looking busy
while the world moves on. The Dark Tower series uses the phrase,
"A world that has moved on" almost as a mantra.
-Marisa mentions Clarkian astrogation. This is a nod to Arthur C.
Clarke, whose short story Breaking Strain inspired so much of
Planetfall.
-Wartzbach mentions the Xerxes interface. Xerxes is the
name of the more stable Artificial Intelligence meant to replace the
megalomaniacal AI called Shodan in the PC game System Shock 2.
System Shock 2 also utilizes a narrative structure similar to
Planetfall where the story is threaded via old logs and messages.
-Similarly in The Poison, Diego uses the phrase, "Isn't it a
wonderful stroke of luck ... This is a miracle", which is a reference to
a monologue spoken by Andrew Ryan in the game Bioshock; a
game that uses a similar method of storytelling
-In The Promise, Adam Cohen mentions there are Mark I and
Mark II systems. This is a quote from Aliens, where Bishop the
synthetic person remarks that the "Mark I's were always a little
twitchy"
-Also in The Promise, Security Chief Michael Tyler mentions
that, "Sawyer hit Parker". Jack Sawyer and Speedy Parker are both
characters from the novels The Talisman and Black House, by
Stephen King and Peter Straub. My mother painstakingly ripped
these audiobooks to dozens of CD's and sent them to me while I
was at college.
-Michael Tyler warns Celine that her crew will "ice out". This is
a phrase from Ender's Game which roughly translates to "fail".
-Fisticuffs Punchgroin and is a bit of a running gag on the
show Mystery Science Theater 3000. In the Space Mutiny episode,
the muscle-bound oaf of a hero is given all manner of suitably
preposterous names, including "Stump Chunkman", "Buff Drinklots",
and "Roll Fizzlebeef"
-When Security Chief Michael Tyler figures out that Celine is
going to try to make Planetfall on time, he exclaims "Good night".
This is a phrase my father said with remarkable frequency in my
childhood. Once I hit adolescence (roughly the same time he had to
sell his old Z car), he mysteriously stopped using the phrase, though
it still has a special place in my heart as the thing to say when
under duress.
-The phrase "a bunch of squiggly lines" is a quote from
Ghostbusters, where one of the ESP subjects tries to guess
(correctly) which card Dr. Venkman is holding
-In The Problem, Daniella mentions the name Colonel Simcoe.
Alex Simcoe was a protagonist in a story I wrote for a creative
writing class about a geneticist/engineer who creates a machine
that acts as a mouthpiece for a steadily evolving super-tree. For
reasons that are utterly beyond me, I use the name Simcoe in just
about every sci-fi endeavor. It's a bit of a calling card.

-The Barrett scenario is, among other things, a loving homage
to the Kobiyashi Maru scenario in Star Trek II, or as its otherwise
known: the no-win scenario.
-In the late 80's, early 90's there was a cartoon called Exo-
Squad. No cartoon in my mind stands out as being so unabashedly
brutal. In just about every episode, some character would die. In
celebration for what was arguably Platoon for kids, I have Exo-suits
in Planetfall.
-Counselor Nwuabudike Umoja is a two-fer easter egg.
Nwuabudike Morgan is a character from the game Alpha Centuari,
one of my favorite games. The name Umoja is Swahili for unity, and
is of particular importance when celebrating Kwanzaa. My mother
randomly decided one winter we were going to do Kwanzaa and it
was such a hilariously lackadaisical affair that I figured why not
throw it in for my African crew member.
-All the female names in the list of the Final 32 (except Marisa
West) are adult entertainment actresses.
-Andrew Wiggan, the main protagonist in Ender's Game,
makes an appearance in the Final 32.
-Manny Calavera from the game Grim Fandango is in the Final
32. I have no idea why. I played about 30 minutes of that game.
-Bernice Jauch is in the Final 32. Bernice, aka Daxflame, is one
of my absolute favorite Youtube personalities.
-The only characters you encounter in the story that actually
make the Final 32 are Marisa West, the Doctor Gregory Adapolis,
and crew member Eve Lawrence (who shares her name with a
prominent adult actress).
-In The Poison, Michael Tyler tells the Commander to "sac up".
This enjoyed a brief stint as phrase-du-jour around the office,
including its lesser-known variant: scrot up.
-At the end of the afore mentioned exchange, there is the
logkeeping code PTR.VAL.END> . This is a reference to three
Wiggan children in order of their birth: Peter, Valentine, and Ender
from the book Ender's Game.
-At the beginning of The Prison, Celine goes on a long diatribe
calling her crew sheep and wolves. This was adapted from a
speech from some Western my father enjoyed. The phrase in
question was, "If God did not want them shorn, he would not have
made them sheep"
-I went to Space Camp with my father in the halcyon days of
my childhood. As a Space Camp cadet, one of your duties was a
simulated mission. I was Mission Specialist II and had to do a space
walk on the hull of the ship. This lead to the inspiration of
simulations, Erin Redd's starwalk, and the naming convention for the
crew.
-in The Panic, crew member Nwubadike Umoja goes on an
enraged diatribe about Celine West. I wrote part of that text on a
plane heading home for Christmas. The gentleman's expression to
my right was priceless. I can only assume he thought I was writing a
word document to a boss who had made me profoundly disgruntled.
But then I remembered this was a post 9-11 flight, so in the interests
of staying ahead of DHS, I stopped writing and threw in a DVD.
-The third pilot of the Demosthenes is never mentioned by
name.

Subject: Easter Eggs

The world of Planetfall was lovingly fleshed out before,
during, and after its creation. In the interests of creating a focused
story, quite a few details had to be omitted. Here are a few facts
about the Planetfall universe.
-NSEA stands for the National Space Exploration Agency, a
corporately funded offshoot of NASA
-Planetfall takes place around 2030 C.E.
-The crew compliment of an Ecclesia-class vessel is 64. The
ship is roughly 200 meters long and costs 6,000,000,000 (adjusted)
dollars.
-Ecclesia-class vessels possess no gravity. To compensate
for this, the interiors are spacious with elaborate networks of
padding and railings. The Logkeeping system was also installed to
combat the inconvenience of floating to and from destinations.
-Logkeeping onboard an Ecclesia-class vessel is a hybrid of
modern-day emailing and instant messaging.
-Ecclesia-class vessels are fueled by a nuclear reactor relying
on space for temperature regulation
-Each crew member has an assigned function, be it Pilot,
Medical, or Engineering. Ranks go from senior level I down to junior
level XII.
-In The Prodigy, Diego makes a brief aside that NCOM (NSEA
Command) was interested in Marisa as a Commander. In order to
qualify for Command of a Ecclesia-class vessel, one must first attain
the rank of Pilot. Diego, Marisa, and Celine were all considered for
Command of the NSEA Demosthenes.
-Marisa West declined Command. Diego was deemed "ill-
suited" to the post.
-The NSEA employs over 250 different simulations meant to
evaluate everything from abstract thinking to motor control.
-The Barrett Scenario is the final simulation all prospective
Commanders must endure. The simulation lasts 24 hours and is
tailored to each applicant. Specifically, every element of fear,
trauma, and doubt are gleaned from the applicant's past and are
brought to bear in the simulation.
-The Pass/Fail ratio for Commanders is 1 in 250, and of that
250, nearly half quit after the Barrett Scenario
-Shortly after the launch of the Demosthenes, the Barrett
Scenario is ruled "cruel and inconclusive" by the NSEA psych division
and is removed from the selection process. The Barrett Scenario
existed for roughly 15 of the 20 years of the NSEA's existence.
-Each NSEA vessel has a Zero serum. The serum induces
euphoria, sleep, then organ failure. The drug is to be used in case of
catastrophic mission failure as a means for the crew to be
euthanized painlessly, rather than endure suffocation or worse. Since
its inception, not one NSEA vessel has had to use what has been
lovingly coined, "FUBAR Juice".

Subject: Planetfalling

Look at the trends in our technology.
Things are not becoming more complicated as we march into
the 21st century. They're becoming roomier. Streamlined. Elegant. If
the present is any indication, we are moving into a world of stunning
simplicity.
So I knew right off the bat that I wanted the design for
Planetfall to be understated. But I also wanted to make concessions
to design. . . some kind of minimalism nouveau.
Near the end of my tenure as a Midway Games employee,
leaked screenshots of Assassin's Creed surfaced. When I looked at
the shell, I fell in love. Beautiful, bold typography. Slick and discreet
animations. Nothing too ridiculous and yet, quite a few tasteful nods
to cool.
So I modeled much of the preliminary design work off those
first few tiny, grainy images of the Animus.

Subject: A minimal assassin

More often than not, my graphic design stems from a strange
fusion of accidental discovery and meticulous planning, such as:
-Portraits. Portraits make Planetfall work, in my humble
opinion. In order to create a truly human drama, I needed the reader
to connect with these people. The easiest way I knew how (as an
B- psych student) was to make the reader resonate visually with
the cast. That meant portraits. More than that, attractive portraits.
-I also wanted the portraits as mnemonic device to remind the
reader of who said what. The name Celine West isn't good enough
to jar the memory. You need to see her piercing eyes and steely
jawline. You need to see her present and full of presence.
-The scrollbar was the design equivalent of Penicillin. As it
turns out, creating a scroll bar to Planetfall's specifications was
incredibly difficult. But further tinkering revealed a curiousity: a
scrollbar based on relativity. I liked it so much (and had resigned
myself to the idea that I would never, ever get the true scrollbar
built) I kept it in.
-The incidental artwork such as the schematics and act/scene
markers were created to divide the story into easily digestable
chunks: 3 acts with 3 chapters apiece.
-Given Planetfall's sparse aesthetic, I needed a way to liven
things up at key moments. Enter the densely elaborate schematics
and charts. The technical details also helped further the notion that
the Demosthenes is a complicated piece of machinery and the crew
has alot on their plate at any given point in time.

Subject: Setting the scene

In just about every facet of Planetfall's visual design, there
were decisions to be made. Forks in the road. Here is a list of the
zags in the places where I zigged
-There was an idea was to have the player sift through a
screen showing the entire collection of emails, including ones that
are never mentioned in the story. The idea was to show that you
are only getting a glimpse of a much larger human drama. But that
idea was scrapped to keep things focused. The extra step to get
back to the story was also extraneous
-Another early design aesthetic was the idea that this user
interface was somehow spirited. Not haunted, per se, but...
abandoned and full of bad memories. Images flicker on and die.
Things seem to pulse with veins. Portraits fade off but the eyes
remain for a few fleeting seconds. Words suspend in the air when
you move on to the next message. Things of that nature. But I
scrapped the idea because it added a supernatural element to
Planetfall, which had nothing to do with the story.
-I didn't want the reader to get bogged down in dates, so
those were immediately removed.
-I also didn't want a whole lot of From and To cluttering up the
screen. Instead, I had the portraits light up when the appropriate
block of text hit the center of the screen. Dividers also have little
symbols showing the sender and recipient of each message.
-When I create something in flash, I spend quite a bit of time
and energy making it blend into the surrounding html. In a sense,
part of the project becomes an installation, and html is not a pretty
environment to grapple with. Still, I am very pleased with how well
Planetfall blended into the browser. It's not quite merged, not quite
socketed... but an interesting marriage of the two.
