Welcome to my drawing lesson. First of all, I have no right to call myself a professional artist and have learned everything I know about drawing through tutorials found on the internet, books on anatomy and the like. Everything drawn in this tutorial has been drawn with the computer mouse in Macromedia Flash Professional 8 and no other technical aid. This tutorial will be focusing mainly on the human head. |

Okay, so the first thing we look at is the basic shape, I usually start with the nose and the eyes, but it might be smarter to start with the shape of the head for some. |
There's something you will have to think about though, do you want to use the brush or the pencil? They both have good sides and bad sides about them which I will explain next. |
This is the basic shape of the head, the lines going horizontal and vertical are guide lines for where the nose, mouth and eyes will be. |

You can get a really artistic feel to it if you use the Brush, but in my opinion it is a lot easier to work with the pencil tool, and I will continue this lesson using that tool. Do not fret, the rules and the principles I follow will be the same for brush as for pencil. I will teach how to draw, not what with. |
This shows very basically how things are placed according to the guidelines. Notice how the ears are as big as from the nose and all the way up to the eyebrows |
When drawing the eyes you have to remember that it consists of several parts, of course in cartoons they can be nothing but two black dots, but this time around we want to do it properly. |
1. |
The Eyeball Delete the outline, you will never need it. |
2. |
Copy the eyeball and reduce the size to just above half the size, change colour to whatever you want it to be |
Copy again and change colour to black |
3. |
4. |
Add details to the iris |
Add highlights according to your light source, in my case it's from the top left |
Remember, for the second eye, just flipping the eye horizontally will mess up the reflection! |
5. |
Use free hand drawing, not the line tool. Also, the smooth fucntion is your friend. Delete the excess of the eyeball |
6. |
Now we make the eye lids, they change according to what expression you want. |
7. |
As for the last part, add some shadows on the eye as shown by the green lines. |
8. |
Add extra details if wanted |
The next thing we will do is the nose. Now remember, the nose may vary a lot from person to person, so you will have to study different shapes and forms as you go along. |
Start of by drawing one nostril and then copying it. (Ctrl+c is your friend as well) |
Do up some lines to define the shape of the nose. |
I'm adding some more areas to add shadows. The light source remains the same as on the eyes. |
I fill in the shadows and draw in my areas for highlighting |
In the last step I fill in the highlighting and delete all the lines |
Time to get ready for the mouth! |
Lips are, surprisingly enough, made out of two lips, an upper and a lower lip. So the best thing is to start outlining the two of them. As with the nose, the shape differs a lot from on person to another. But it is easy to make different types of lips by just changing size, width and thickness. |
Now we can add the basic colours to the lips. The upper lip has a darker colour than the lower one |
We will be removing the outlines later on so now we can add some shadowing where it is appropriate, mostly around the edges |
The final step is to add highlights and get rid of the outlines |
The next thing will be the shape of the head, followed by the ears before the final assembly of all the parts that we have made. I'm getting pumped! |
Start with a basic egg shaped head as I have, it will be scaled down for now, but since I'm working with the pencil tool, that doesn't matter because increasing the size won't affect the thickness of the lines, as it would with the brush tool Then add the guidelines they will help us make the face anatomically correct. |
Now we can define the cheeks a bit more. I am making a female character since the lips turned out a bit glossy, making them look more feminine, therefore the cheeks and should be a little bit rounder and not too 'rough' also set of a small mark where the chin stops could be a nice idea to now where to place the mouth afterwards. Also I sketched the position of the ears for you to see. |
It is time to put in the other parts of the head, to be able to continue with the face. |
I have done some slight changes, like making the nose smaller by removing some of the shading, this makes the nose seem more feminine. Keep that one in mind, it has helped me a lot! |
Now I'm starting the shading of the face itself. |
There's shadowing around the eye sockets, and also if it's a slim person, you can add some shading underneath the cheek bones. I have also already added the highlights. |
The last few things I will add to this are eyebrows and a neck, and now: Finito! turned out pretty nice didn't it? Now let's have a look at the hair! |
Only to have said it: I am no master with hair, however I do know a few things that might help, if not much, at least some. Rightio, let's jump straight into it! |
Hair is tricky, but there are some things that can help you draw hair with some quality. |
First of all, the hair line is much higher up on the face than many people think, and if it goes really high, it creates a sense of baldness. There's also different ways of drawing these hair lines, as shown to the left. The right one I tend to use for males. |
I'll stick to this one since I think it will be a nice starting point for a female haircut. |
Here I've tried a design that I'll stick with for this tutorial. I've kept the hair line and the rest of the head for you to see the thickness I've given the hair. |
And this is what I got after some help from the smoothening tool. |
Now, let us apply it to the head we've already made! |
Here I have put the hair on the head, now we'll just have to fill it with a base colour that you want. I usually make it somewhat lighter than the eyebrows. |
Here you have it with the base colour filled in. I have also applied some shadows that falls onto the skin from the hair. |
Now I'll do the shading for hair. Remember where your lightsource is. |
Then I add the highlights. I find it hard to explain where the highlights go, I place it where I think it should go really. |
And it's done! I did some final adjustments, |
I also made the face thinner. |
such as removing the shadows underneath her cheekbones as it made here look older. |
Hope you learned something with this tutorial! If not... then it sucks to be you! I'm probably a bad teacher! |
