SOPA FAQ

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which
have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to
which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires
that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with
certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these
rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That
whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to
abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in
such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that
governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience
hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by
abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing
invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty,
to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. --Such has been the patient
sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of

What is SOPA?

SOPA, or Stop Online Piracy Act is what lobbyists from the entertainment industry
claim is intended to block foreign sites that specialize in illegal music and movie
downloads, or counterfeit goods.
However, a quick readthrough of the bill,  has made it clear that this legislation in-the-
making is nothing more than a carpet-bomb effort to silence the final bastion of civil
liberty and freedom of speech; i.e. the internet.
SOPA is in fact nothing new and is just the most recent incarnation in a long line of failed
censorship bills concerning the Internet. The oldest in fact was the Communications
Decency Act or CDA of 1996 which in turned was shot down by the Blue Ribbon
Campaign for free speech.  It is your job to ensure that this bill fails as well.
The man who cooked up this nightmare piece of legislature is one Lamar (Not related
to that declawed headcrab from Half-Life 2) Smith. His office address is located  in

Why is this such a big issue?

SOPA claims to only target illegal download sites and businesses that peddle counterfeit
goods. However, as it is quite vague on what we should consider as 'piracy'. to the point
it practically stamps out the term 'fair use' from existence.
This article explains the process for how companies will use SOPA to circumvent the
traditional DMCA process. If your website has even one piece of infringing material
(such as an unlicensed picture on a user page), this material could be used as an excuse
to:
1) Block your domain name, essentially shutting off your site to the US.
2) Block your advertisers and payment processors.
3) Block your search engine listings.
Yes, in case you were wondering; this allows even unscrupulous criminals to clamp
down on free speech. All it would take for your site to be blocked off at the DNS level (if
your site is hosted in the US), would be a single complaint that you have no right to
appeal against. And yes, DNS blocking is the same method used by repressive regimes
such as Iran and Syria to silence the opposition. Simply put, the big companies are tired
of those pesky laws that help protect innovation, economic growth, and creativity rather
than outdated business models.

What do I stand to lose?

A lot, if the bill passes. Even big names like Google agree. Video streaming, for example
would become akin to taking mysterious packages from strangers; as anyone could file
a bogus complaint and the site itself would be DNS blocked, without much ado.
What happened to Wikileaks via voluntary censorship will now be systematized and
streamlined to the guidelines of 'infringing on anyones rights' (which would be up to
the Entertainment Industry, in America, to decide)  – and enforced with the threat of
liquidation.
Secondly, the bill is an excuse to monopolize innovation to a few high-echelon companies,
while talented startup companies both American and foreign are labeled as pirates and
counterfeiters, and denied funding and audience.
Third, if it passes, other nations will most likely follow suit.The increased funds that
invariably have to be spent to monitor and moderate content will translate to higher
uptime fees, and discourage the growth of the internet, and as ISPs are forced to spend
more, the cost of internet service will also rise on a global scale.

How bad can it get?

This bill allows large production labels to unfairly persecute artists. Artists have personal
sites that they update with links to their personal Youtube channels where they stick up
their videos and what not. If an artist has a falling out with a label the label could
effectively get Youtube and the personal website shut down under SOPA by saying the
artist doesn't have the right to be uploading and linking to material they own. It could
take ownership of a song that the artist themselves wrote away from them if the label
doesn't like their actions or things they're saying.
More troubling; there's no real cost estimates for SOPA either. It's as though Lamar Smith
can't be arsed to work up the numbers if he wants to have some kind of global presence
to combat this problem. At least the Senate can come up with some kind of estimates for
the next five years for Protect IP. They're saying that's going to cost the taxpayers an
estimated 48 million over the next five years if that thing passes.
That's at least 9.6 million dollars taxed upon people per year, to uphold corporate
monopoly. The real figures will probably be higher - money that could have been spent on
reducing the burden on the American economy is being used as cigar paper for the big
name companies. You know what that's called? Daylight robbery. Financial terrorism.

How can I help?

Do what those companies that refuse to agree with SOPA do. Write to Lamar, and
the Judiciary and your Senate representatives. Sure, they can get a little hard
to track down, but it's worth it.
And don't forget the Supreme Court. They shot down the previous attempt at
online censorship after declaring the bill as unconstitutional. Write to them too.
Spread the word, get people talking - it's not illegal to inform people.... yet.
Start phasing out products and services from companies that support SOPA.
Work up to a complete boycott on their products.
If you own a website or online business based in the US, on a domain host that
supports SOPA, consider switching. This is a powerful action that sends a clear
message to the hosting people.
Above all - remember; you are the people. Don't turn America into North Korea
or Iran or some shitty dictatorship.

Yeah, you can help. Write to your lawmakers and legislators to consider refusing
SOPA-friendly laws.
And while you're at it, you can start boycotting the products from companies that
support SOPA. An international boycott would seriously make them reconsider.
Help activists from the US set up shop with site hosting from different countries.
Spread awareness and inform people of the truth of SOPA and other similar, and
equally dangerous legislations.
