A Lesson In Quantum Physics
(A Schrödinger Tribute)

Schrödinger's Cat:
A cat is placed in a steel box, along with a Geiger counter in
which there is a tiny bit of radioactive substance, so small that it
might, in the course of one hour, have one of the atoms decay,
but also, with equal probability, perhaps none; if it happens, the
mechanism releases hydrocyanic acid. If one has left this entire
system to itself for an hour, one would say that the cat still lives
if meanwhile no atom has decayed. The first atomic decay would
have poisoned it. The Psi function for the entire system would
express this by having, at the same time, a 100% living cat and a
100% dead cat. But, once the box opens, it is 100% one
or the other.
