Keeas slid effortlessly into a broad combat stance, centering his weight evenly and
low to the ground. His paw grasped the hilt of the axe strapped across his back,
and slid it free from the leather hoops holding it in place. The metal burned his
paws with icy cold, and he had to readjust his numbed fingers to make certain
that his grip was sure. The axe felt heavy in his grasp, his travels having taken
more of a toll than he had thought. It had been three days since he had last eaten
and only now did he truly realize how poor a condition he was in.
Males from his tribe had begun disappearing. While, at first, it was one or two a
month, as of late as many as four a week failed to return home at the
end of hunts. No tribe had an endless number of hunters or warriors, and when
Keeas's brother disappeared, he had decided that he would sit idle no longer. As
the strongest, most skillful male in the tribe, Keeas knew that he would have to
take matters into his own paws...
Shaking his head to clear the cobwebs of fatigue, he watched the shape approach.
Keeas heard the sound of hoof beats on the half-frozen ground, and he readied
himself for the mounted figure as it materialized out of the fog. "You look tired,
my friend." the figure's voice spoke as the horse drew to a stop, just within hailing
distance. The tiger opened his muzzle to speak, but ended up coughing instead.
He gazed up at the rider, attempting to focus through the mist, blinking several
times before he realized that the fog was not on the plains, but in his own mind.
"Indeed... very tired." the mysterious figure noted, and Keeas's vision grew even
darker. He didn't know exactly when or how he grew so exhausted, but the
stranger's words sent him into the dark folds of unconsciousness more surely than
a blow to the head. A discerning twitch in Keeas's tail gave him the distinct
impression that he may have preferred a physical attack instead... and then,
blackness. Keeas didn't exactly enter consciousness, but he knew somewhere in
the back of his mind that he wasn't dreaming. In a bleary haze, Keeas felt warmth
slowly seep into him. There was a stone floor... and his hides had all been
removed.

Hot water dribbled through his fur, tracing its way across aching muscles and
frozen flesh. Sure movements drew what must have been a brush through his fur
and a forceful handler kept the semi-conscious tiger moving this way and that
while more buckets of hot water assaulted the cold that still clung to him. He felt
pressure on his left wrist, which was lifted above his head. Still not wholly
conscious, it only vaguely registered to Keeas that his wrist was being tied up.
A hand patted him on the head between the ears, eliciting a quasi-attentive growl
from Keeas; he did not like being the recipient of pats... that was for cubs. Bleary,
Keeas cracked open an eye. He was unable to make out his surroundings... simply
that there was a fire somewhere... or something granting a degree of light... and
warmth. His naked body was not cold... but he was wet... and he felt water
lapping at his legs. He was sitting, that much he knew-- and then, he heard a
voice... the same voice as the rider. It sounded far away to his fatigued mind, but
he heard it nonetheless.
"So... tell me, tiger... why travel so far from your village?" he was questioned.
Keeas tried several times to speak but, ultimately, could manage only one slurred
word, "Looking..."
"And what are you seeking?" came the reply, so casual as to have been suitable
for campfire conversation.
"Lost... warriors..." he mumbled, almost blacking out once as he pressed his back
against what must have been a wooden post. He gripped it with his paw, coming
to the slow realization that he was tied to it.
"Ah..." the voice answed back knowingly, "They are not lost..."
The tiger's eyes slowly shut again, his body fighting hard with his mind, telling it
to turn off and return to the comfort of the oblivion that was unconsciousness.
"Rest." the voice ordered, "You will find out what has become of them soon
enough..."
Keeas finally gave in and, everything slid once more into blackness. The tiger
realized that when he 'found out', it wouldn't be on his terms.
