This Part Is how to optimize
sound.Sound is Probably the most
important thing in a flash movie or
game,who wants to play and game
while hearing horrible...noise!
so i will teach you how to keep your
file size low and still have your
sound at a good quality

First Import your sound,Song.

Choose the file you want to use.

Click Open

Click on a frame from the
timeline,press f9 and go to properties
now select the song,sound where it
says Sound

Now test your movie and you will
hear you sound,song play.

If you want to let a sound start in a certain
frame,you have to add a keyframe and
select the frame after the keyframe,and add
the sound.

You can also edit the sound,(you can make the
song start later,you can fade it out and in).

Click Edit

You drag the points to make
the song start later

Click Effect and look
threw the options theres
some called fade those
will fade out or in your
music(Optional)

Now to stream
audio,import your song
and add About 300
frames.The more frames
there are the longer the
song will play.
Go to Properties and
select stream where it
says sync.

Now start your movie
and stop it after a few
seconds you will see
your song doesnt
continue like it used
to.This Keeps The File
Size down alot
also.You usally use
event sounds for
loops or games.

Almost done with audio,Now I will teach you how to
loop sounds or music.

Select the song from the timeline
go to properties(f9) and type in the
amount of times you want your
sound clip to loop.

There now you have
looped your sound
clip,one more time
for sound.

Ok well this is the last thing for sound.I
will teach you how to add sound into your
button.

After you have
made your button
go back to the
spot where you
can change how
the button looks
like after being
clicked on.

On Down,Drag
your sound clip
from the
libray(ctrl-L) on
to the
stage.This will
make the button
play the sound
you want.

Ok,Frame by frame is really easy.First
Start of with a dot.

ok now you need to turn onion skins
on.This will allow you too see the
previous frame so you can make your
object move in sync.

Now keep drawing dots like this
on each frame.

Make sure
that all the
dots arent on
the same line

It should look like this now.You can
make more complicated things like
explosions but start of with a dot.

It should have moved similar to
that,you dont want to space it too
much.Also i enjoy using 20 fps the
most.30 top,anything higher is way
to fast.

Now I will teach you how to custimize your own cursor

First draw your cursor like this or if you have an idea use
it.Now Convert it to a movie clip.highlight it and do ctrl-f8.

Now if you want to see if your cursor's point is proporly
lined up so it will be eaiser to click things double click
on it and see if the end of your cursor is on the + sign.

Now give the cursor this script by
pressing f9 and go to actions and
write it in the box use this script.

Now Give the cursors instance name by
going to f9,properties then it says
instance name,change it to CURSOR.

Now if after awhile you get tired of
having your custimized cursor just put
this script in the frame where you want
your normal cursor back

There now you have just made
your own cursor in 2 minutes.

Ok,Creating highlightable text(Dynamic text) is very easy
to learn because its the simplest thing.Ok now click on
"A" the text tool then press f9 go to properties and
theres a dropdown menu that says static text click on
that and switch it to dynamic text this will make your text
highlightable,its that easy

change anything just makes it

This is also very is to do.This kind of text is very
usefull for making games for putting in informations
like ur name,age things like that for games
like(sims,submitting scores ect...
First Off Grab the "A" tool,press f9 go to properties and
switch the kind of text to input text this will make the
text able to be typed in.its always good to put a
background to it to see where the text field is.Also add
infront of it the information that has to been given like
name,age and then put the text field like the example
below.Thats all there is to it.Now go on to the next tuts.

Creating Sound boards are pretty easy to make.First,you
want to get a picture of the person you are getting the
sounds for,Then you need to get your sounds get
about(65-75) or more,Remember more is better!Now you
need you need to put each sound into a button by,creating
a button,then double click on it and go to the timeline that
says  down and drag the song on to that frame.if you want
it better explain go to this tutorial about buttons.

Now,you need to make a music stop button make a
button,double click on the button put a keyframe "
down" press f9 go to actions and put this script in.

There are two ways of stoping music,in a button and
in a frame.First by stoping music in a button,creat
your music stop button double click on it on the

Now This is very simple just click on the frame you want
the music to stop in,press f9 go to actions and add this
script and you will make your frame stop the music.

Some of you might think that this tutorial is making Good
looking buttons because its named "Quality Button"but its
to change the quailty of your game or animation.This is very
usefull to people that have really slow computers so they
can watch or play a game without glitching every second.
First,make a button or movie clip they both work and name it
toggle button and give it this script by pressing f9 and going
to action.

To make a scrolling background first make a very long

on the side.Add in buttons that say play and
credits if you want to add additional things
please do but play and credits are the main 1's.
Just create the buttons and put them on the
frame and then you have just made your menu

Always when putting script into a button make sure
that you have : on(release){ on you script this
means when you mouse hits the button after you
release your finger off of the mouse it will activate
the button.

To access the Libray just press Ctrl-L.Its used for finding
files.Everything that you have done or imported is in your
libray.To delete something from your libray just right click on
it and go to delete this will remove your file.You can also edit
things by right clicking on them and going to edit with and
open a program you want to edit the file with.Once you have
edited it,it will change to what you have changed it to.If you
double click on a file that is in the libray it will bring up a
page and you can change the name,test it if its a song or
video smooten it,change its compression and also you have
to double click on the little picture beside it or else it wont
open,if you click on the file name it will just let you change
the name of it.

If you got trouble you've come to the right place.Even
though it is very simple to do you will need to use this alot
in flash.Flash Only accepts certain types of tiles.When you
import you can either do,File>Import(ctrl-R) or File>Import
to Libray.The first one with import it to the frame that you
currently are on,the second one will send it to your
libray.You can access the libray by pressing (ctrl-L).But any
way you import you will get the same window.This is the list
of file types that Flash Mx allows:
.fh .ft .png .eps .ai .pdf .bmp .dfx .dib .emf .swf .spl .gif .jpg
.wmf .wav .mp3 .mov .avi .mpg .mpeg .dv .dvi .asf .wmv .flv

Exporting is taking your game/movie and making into a
movie format.The usual form is .swf that is what you are
currently viewing and every game/movie on newgrounds is
an .swf file.So now to export, Go to file>Export
movie(Ctrl+alt+shift+S).A new window will pop up and ask
you where and what name you want to save it as.Flash
movie is .Swf that is the kind of file you need to use to
submit to newgrounds,there are other kinds but you dont
really need those.If you wanna send it to your friend but he
doesnt have flash just save it as an .exe file.Now after you
have given it a name and saved it where ever.a new window
will pop up with the settings of your exported movie.First
setting is "load order" This is which way your movie loads -
bottom up,starting from the first frame to the last or top
down the opposite of bottom up.Then you have options
Generate the size report gives you a file telling you how
many bytes each frame is.

Now,Protect from import will allow you to password the
movie.Always turn this on! Debugging Permitted allows
the movie to be "debugged" by entering a password and
compress movie,This compresses the movie.You can
also enter the quality of JPEG's in your exported
movie,between 0 (bad) 100 (good).If you don't have any
pictures don't worry about this.You can also optimize the
sound,its always good to do that,go to the tutorial named
"Compression" to look at that,and lastly version,this
selects the version flash of your exported movie,its
always best to put it to the highest it can be for
compression use.

This Part will tell you a little bit about brushes and options
when using.The brush tool     (shortcut-b) is an important
drawing tool in flash.Some people just use the line tool or
shapes more often but the brush tool is very usefull.There are
sevral different options to chose from when you have
selected the brush tool.

when you zoom into flash
the brush will get smaller

and get different
effects than others
The default brush is
the top circle.

This part allows you to
select The brush mode.It
allows you to choose
however you want to
paint.lets say you wanted to
paint behind any fills just
select paint behind.Its also
good to check all of these
out.
You can also change the
color of the brush by
selecting the part colors its
not hard to miss.

Compression,you always want to have your movie
compressed,keep at a low file size but also still have some
good quailty.The main things to compress are
sounds/music and any images in your flash document.To
compress a sound open up your libray(ctrl-l)(f-11).Find your
sound and right click on it then select properties.At the
bottom of your new window it should say "Export Settings".
Uncheck the check box next to"Use imported MP3 quality"
if it is checked.Next to "compression" choose mp3 and as
for the bit rate put it to something low as 16 anything lower
will sound terrible,you can use the "test" button to see how
your sound,sounds if it sounds bad change the bit
rate.Leave the quailty to "fast".This reduces the file size alot

At the bottom of the window
it shows the how much of
the file size you have just
reduced after changing it,i
reduced 12.5% of the file
and i'm still happy with the
quality of my sound.

Now when you go to export your
movie,make sure that you have
checked "compress movie" to make
the file size go down even lower.Also
compression JPEG's is useful too,it
brings the file size down to but you
have to check the quailty of your
JPEG's to make sure they are blurry

This part of the tutorial teachs you how to make a frame or
button send you to the net.To get to the net from a
frame,open up the actions panel(f9) and click on your
frame that you want this to happen on,so you will get
actions:frame instead of actions.Put your mode to normal
select this option with this icon

Then select 'browser network' : 'get URL'.Once you have
entered a little a with a filled in circle will apear on the
frame on the timeline.This means that the is currently
something on this frame,that your actions have been
added      .Now to edit the URL / site.

In the "URL" Field enter
the full address of the
website Example:
http://www.example.com

In the "Window" field you choose where the website opens
its best to pick "_blank" it will make it open up in a new
window and wont effect your flash movie and as for
"Variables" field just ignore it leave it how it is(Don't send").
The actions in the frame should look similar to this:

Now to make buttons which open up a webpage when clicked
on,highlight the whole button go to the actions panel and
select the same things as the frame one,"browser
network">get URL then insert the URL,now when you click on
the button it will go to the URL.

Masking is a way to make one layer above and other to hide
parts of the bottom layer that you dont want to see.This is
probably the best example anyone can give you,James bond.
First,have a layer ready with all of the animation you want on
it,as the layer will be masked.To start a mask layer,insert a
layer above the layer you want to be masked right click on the
layer and select "mask" from the drop down menu,your
timeline should like similar to the one below.

Now,you need to choose which parts of the layer that are
going to be shown.Example,if i draw a circle in the center of
the mask layer so that the things that go behind the circle
will show on the layer below.Only the shape of your masked
layer matters the color of it doesnt.

Now if you watch your movie(ctrl-enter)you will see that
only the area where your circle is on the maked layer is
showing your animation.You can also animate your masked
layer to make the circle move to places so you can show
different things or make it follow your animation.This is
also good for using in games as a scope on a sniper rifle or
as binoculars,there are different examples but im sure you
understand the consept you masking layers now.

Color tweening isnt like other tweens color tweening isnt
seperate.Here are 2 ways of doing so.Draw a shape in the
first keyframe then insert a keyframe around the 20th
frame now on each frame change the color of the shape.

Your timeline should look like this now

Now if you play
your movie the
color of the
shape should
change.

As you've just color tweening doesnt exist it is just a form of
shape tweening.You can also do something similar to what
you have just done with motion tweening,using tinting.

Now play your movie as you see the green
outline will fade in together,it still brings a
nice effect to it though.

Motion Tween

Do you want your movie to stop on a certain frame?The
"stop" function allows you to do so.pick which frame you
want to stop on press f9 go to the actions panel and add in
this script to it.This will make your movie stop on this frame.

After adding in the script look at your
timeline and see if your frame has an "a"
on it this means that your frame is
currenlty holding an action on it.To make
a button stop the frame simply highlight
the button and add in the script.If you
want to stop on a certain frame use the
gotoAndStop action.

Here are the action scripts for "stop"Which you are able to
copy them and edit if you want,if you edit theres really not
much to do but gotoAndStop or gotoAndPlay.

gotoAndPlay is an action that lets you either use in a frame
or button it makes you go from one frame to another.It can
also be used in to go to another scene.Say your movies
playing and its going from frame 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 but you
want it to go to frame 1 to 5 to 10 so this is where
gotoAndPlay comes in get the actions panel press f9 click
on your frame so you get actions-frame.Now enter in this
script.Your gonna have to edit the script because i dont
know if you want to go to a new scene or a new frame and
which frame so just change the part that says frame to
scene if you want it to go to scene and change the numbers
to which scene or frame you want it to go to.

Scene selection is very easy to make and very useful.Make
buttons with pictures of the scene you want it to go to.Then
add script to the button.Your gonna have to edit the script
because i dont know if you want to go to a new scene or a
new frame and which frame so just change the part that
says frame to scene if you want it to go to scene and
change the numbers to which scene or frame you want it to
go to.

of whats happening in it.Example
mine is just a gun resembling that
theres a gun fight.

This part of the tutorial will teach you how to tint things you
can tint buttons,graphics,movie clips.When you choose a
movie clip,button or graphic,on the properties tab(ctrl-f3)you
should see a dropdown menu that says color

I will now explain each one
None:Resets the tint to the default
Brightness:Edits the brightness
Tint:Allows you to tint your symbol with a
different color
Alpha:Allows you to fade your symbol
from anywhere between opaque (100%
Alpha) and Transparent (0% Alpha)
Advanced:These are expert colors its
good to use these because they have
really cool effects

After choosing the
option tint select a
new color to be the
tint you can also
adjust the tint 100%
with chang ethe
whole symbol 0%
wont make a
difference.

This is very easy if you dont understand or get this wrong
just quit flash.First draw an object and convert it to a movie
clip and give it these actions.

the object with these
actions it will shake.

_root. ,an example is you know dress up games and if you
press a button you change a girls shirt things like that is
_root. First make a movie clip With 3 frames in each one make
different color circles.Add the "stop" action to the first frame
of the movie clip,now go back and drag your movie clip back
on to the stage.Make two buttons make one say next and
other say back.Now give the circle movieclip the instance
name of "CIRCLE".

Put in "Next" Button

Now test your movie.What
should happen is when
you press next the circle
should change to a
different color.

In this part of the tutorial i will teach you how to make a
preloader with a loader bar.First Draw your loader bar,Try and
keep it simple untill you get good at making them.Convert
your loader bar into a movie clip and make exactly 100 frames
no more no less.Convert the layer into a tween and add a
keyframe into the last frame now go to the first frame and
make the bar smaller.Now give the loader bar the instance
name of "BAR".Add this script to the first frame of your movie

to where the movie should start playing
after its loaded

Score counters are very useful in flash games. you just use
the _root. action you learned before.Click on the "a" press f9
go to properties and select dynamic text from the drop down
menu.Make a text block and put a 0 (zero) in it.Now give the
text the instance name of "COUNTER1".Now make a button
and put this script into it.

{    _root.COUNTER=number(_root.COUNTER1)+1;}

Explanation:This makes the instance COUNTER1 Count +1
you can change it to any other number so it goes up by
2,10 anything.You can also use,
-1 minus 1
*2 times 2
/3 divided by 3

There you have it your
own score counter

Dress up's are very easy to make First draw your person or
thing your going to dress up and then make clothing,make
the clothing into movie clips and give them this script,

Create a new movieclip by going to insert>new symbol.Make
it a movieclip now in your movie clip make your
sprites,import them or copy and paste them.Now press ctrl-B
To break them apart.Now delete the background if there is
any.Now you have around 8 different images with difference
stances of the guy place each one on different frames.Now
go back to the main timeline and drag your movie clip from
the libray(ctrl-l) and place it on the spread sheet.After that
you can make a nice looking background for them.

to the last frame.

shown in neutral.

You can only get a batting average if you have submitted 3
flash files and they have to stay on ng.There are different
ranks F+ being the worst and A+ being the best.

A+: you need to have a BA of about 3.45(Best users).
B+: you need to have a BA of about 2.80(Good).
C+: Above 2.00(still noobish needs improvement).
And everything thats lower than that is just terrible.Try to
evoid getting under C+.
