Why do you need FL Studio? FL Studio (or Fruity Loops) is great if you want to create your own songs or make remixes of other songs. You can make drumbeats, create melodies and even record your singing (if you have a microphone). FL Studio is great both for beginners and professionals. It´s not too hard to learn the basics, but the best thing is that you can always improve. I mean, Ive been working with FL Studio for a couple of months now, and I improve all the time. In this tutorial you will learn the basics AND more advanced stuff. |

How to get FL Studio: You can download the demo for free on the website below. But to be able to save your work projects, you need to buy the full verision. And if you buy it, buy the XXL verision: It’s a little more expensive, but It’s totally worth it. |

The Basics: This is the Step Sequencer, and it’s the most important part of FL Studio. You can klick the boxes to make beats, and then press the Play button. The Pattern box next to the Play button must be orange (we’ll look more into that later). |
Volume |
Pattern |
BPM |
Using different sounds: To use other sounds than the regular Kick, Clap, Hat and Snare, we need to look into these categories. There sure are a lot of categories, which may seem confusing at first, but the only one you can find sounds in is the “Packs” category. Click it! |
The sounds i find most useful are in Hip-Hop, Dance, FPC and Vintage. But try all the sounds, and see which ones you like best. To use the sounds, just drag the sound you want into the Step Sequencer. If that doesn't work, you can right click > Open in new channel. |
Templates: If you don't want to hand-pick all your sounds, you can create a new document from a template. Just go to File > New from template. To get the usual Kick, Clap, Hat, Snare template back, go to File > New from template > Minimal > Basic. |
Patterns: First of all, you need to click the Playlist button to open the Playlist (you'll find it somewhere in the upper right corner in FL Studio). |
This one |
The different patterns are like different parts of the song. You put them together with the playlist, which I will explain in a minute. To change to a different pattern, you just need to click on the pattern you want. Now, if you click the Next button, I will tell you everything about Playlists. :) |
Playlist: |
Timeline |
Patterns |
As you could see in the previous step, there were white boxes inside the timeline. These boxes shows which pattern is playing and when it plays. You can make full- length songs with this technique. If you want to play the whole song, klick the "Song" box next to the Play button, then press Play. |
Song box |
Playlist Tools: |
Draw tool. Use this to draw in the playlist timeline. You just click where you want it. Paint tool. Almost excactly as the Draw tool. Delete tool. Use it to delete things in Playlist. But you can do the same thing if you right- click with Draw tool or Paint tool. Select tool. To select Patterns, or select in Timeline. Zoom tool. Use this to zoom in the Playlist. |
Plugins: There are plugins for almost everything. You can have a whole drum-set in a single channel, make your own synth-sounds and much more. I'll show you how to add plugins to Step Sequencer, put plugins you have downloaded into FL Studio and tell you more about a few useful plugins. |
How to use plugins: To add a plugin, press Ctrl + F8. Lots of symbols will appear on the screen. The ones on the left side are all plugins. To use one of them, just double-click the one you want. You can also drag it into the Step Sequencer (as I did in the picture). |
If you have an older verision of FL Studio than 8.0, you might not be able to press Ctrl+F8. What you'll have to do then is click Channel > Add one, then choose a plugin. |
Use downloaded plugins: If you have downloaded a plugin and want to use it in FL Studio, you'll first have to put the .dll file in a folder. The folder is: C:/Computer/Program Files/Image-Line/FL Studio 8/Plugins/VST. After that, open FL Studio and click Channels > Add one > More. Then you click the Refresh button in the bottom-right corner and select Fast Scan. The plugin should appear in the window, and all you have to do next is double-click it. If you have an older verision, just go to FL Studio 7(or 6, 5 etc) /Plugins/VST instead. |
3xOSC: 3xOSC is a plugin where you can customize your own synth-sounds. The first section is just like power- chords on a guitar, with three tones. You can choose how loud they'll be with the volume buttons, in which speaker with Pan and which shape with the shape buttons. |
Shape |
Click INS to choose for how long the sound will last etc. Use these buttons: |
Predelay time (DEL). How long before the sound will start. Attack Time (ATT). If the sound will start right-on or smooth with fade-in. Hold Time (HOLD). For how long the sound will last. Decay Time (DEC). How much the sound will fade out. Sustain Level (SUS) and Release Time (REL). You can say they also change the fade-out. |
But if you don't want to customize your own sounds all the time, check out Channel Presets > 3xOSC in the list on the left. FPC: FPC has all the drums you'll ever need. Instead of adding a new channel for every drum in the Step Sequencer, all the drums are in the Piano Roll. Just right-click FPC and click Piano Roll. |
Other useful plugins: FL Keys: Sounds like a real piano. FL Slayer: Everything from heavy disorted guitars to acoustic guitars with real chords or power chords. Boo Bass: Perfect if you want a realistic bass. Toxic Biohazard: Make heavy synth-loops. You have to pay for the full verision, though. Antares Auto-Tune: The pitch-program T-Pain, Cher, Snoop Dog etc uses to get that "synthezised" sound of their voice. This program costs money, too. PM me and i can help you get it. Fruity Dancer: Get a manga-style character to dance to your beats and songs :D. Control the dance moves with Piano Roll. |
Export as MP3: You need to export your project to get it as a Mp3 file. Click File > Export > Mp3 File. Then you name your file and click the Start button. To get your project as a Wave or OGG file, click File > Export > Wave file/OGG File. Export as MIDI: MIDI Export is a little different from Mp3 Export. Before you go to Export, click Tools > Macros > Prepare for MIDI export. Then go to File > Export > MIDI File. |
Mixer: The Mixer is very useful if you want to create effects in your song like giving it more depth, use the equalizer, add delay etc. Click this button (Upper right corner in FL Studio) to open the Mixer: |
The master channel is linked to all sounds. The channels next to master called Insert 1, 2 etc are there so you can link specific sounds to them (I'll explain in a minute). The slots on the right side are for effects. To add effects, click the button in one of the slots (doesn't matter wich slot). You can turn an effect on and off with the buttons, and how much they'll sound with the buttons. |
Link a sound to a Channel: If you want one or more sounds in a specific channel, select the sound by clicking on it. Hold shift to select more than one. After that, select an empty channel in the Mixer, and press Ctrl + L. If it doesnt work, try to right-click > Link selected channels > to this track. |
To get more depth, and make it sound more professional, I use Reeverb and Compressor. How to do it: Add Fruity Reeverb (you don't have to change the settings), then add Fruity Compressor and click the button till it shows these settings. |
Change wallpaper in View > Background > Set bitmap wallpaper. |
Piano Roll: The Piano Roll allows you to put melody in your songs. You can work with much more precision than with the Step Sequencer. To open Piano Roll, simply right-click a channel and click Piano roll. |
So how do you use the Piano Roll? Well, the piano on the left side selects the pitch. You draw within the timeline to create notes. Just press the Play button to hear your song. |
Piano |
Timeline |
Notes |
Tools: |
Draw Tool. Use this to draw notes in Piano Roll. Paint Tool. Almost like the the Draw Tool, but instead of drawing one note at a time, you can "paint" a whole line with notes. Delete Tool. Use to delete notes. But you can do the same thing with Draw or Paint Tool by right-clicking a note. Select Tool. Select one or many notes with it. But you can do the same thing with any other tool by holding Ctrl. Zoom Tool. You can zoom with it. |
Importing a song: It´s very easy to import a song into FL. First you open your explorer window and find the song you want. Then you drag the song to the Playlist. |
Import a sound: To import a single sound to FL, you do excactly as in the first step. But instead of dragging it to Playlist, drag it to the Step Sequencer. Now you can use it in Piano Roll if you want. |
If you want to modify your sound, for example stop the sound whenever a note stops in Piano Roll, you must first click the sound you want to modify. This window will now open. Then click INS. |
This controls how much fade-in there will be, how long the sound will last etc (excactly as 3xOSC). Predelay Time (DEL). How long before the sond starts to play. Best thing is to have this down to zero. Attack Time (ATT). How much the sound will fade in. Hold Time (HOLD). How long the sound will last. Decay Time (DEC), Sustain Level (SUS) and Release Time (REL). How the sound will fade out. I usually set the settings to something like this: |
