R-t-B and Corky52's Guide on helping Newgrounds |
Abusive Review Guide |
Abusive Review Guide 2 |
Hello there, and welcome to our guide to helping Newgrounds! You may have seen (and hopefully enjoyed) some of our earlier work on flagging abuse reviews (links to which follow below). The goal in flagging abuse is to help make Newgrounds a more pleasant and enjoyable place for all. However, there are many more ways that you can improve the NG community, and a few of these will be outlined in the course of the guide. Believe it or not, several groups have been established on Newgrounds by like- minded people who wish to make Newgrounds a better place. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the guide! |
Why should I help Newgrounds? |
This is the question I get the most on this matter. There is no reason for you to do this if you don't want to. Some people only go on Newgrounds to watch flash and play games, nothing else, and that is fine. If you are one of those people, I would advise you to stop watching now, as those without interest in improving the NG experience will gain little from this flash. I only ask that you would not give me a low score or a bad review simply because you feel NG is something not to be taken seriously. For those of you who are interested in helping to make Newgrounds a better place, there are many ways to do so, but first let us consider the reasons why you should. |
Reasons to help Newgrounds |
- Help to create a better and more fun experience on the site for all users. - Make new friends who share the same goals as you in helping improve Newgrounds (more on this point later). - Be recognised by your fellow users as being an helpful individual, and make NG a closer knit community. - Gain some satisfaction in knowing NG is a better place for you being in it (was that corny or what ;D) There are many other good reasons to want to help NG, these are some of the main ones. |

Writing helpful reviews |
You might be thinking "Writing helpful reviews? That's easy!" NOTHING could be further from the truth. Writing a good review takes time and patience to be done properly. While some would argue that it's not worth the effort, in my view it is the least you can do when a flash artist spends days, weeks or even months creating their work. For starters, let's look at a "good" review and some "bad" reviews. *note that names are erased for anonymity, we don't wanna give some users bad reputations. |
Examples of bad reviews |
While the reviewer obviously liked the flash, they did not offer any constructive criticism, nor did they go into any detail about what they enjoyed about the flash. In my view, a fairly poor review. |
Even if the flash was crap, the reviewer could at least explain WHY they thought it was crap. Just because an author puts little effort into their flash doesn't mean you should stoop to the same thing. |
Example of a good review |
The reviewer enjoyed the submission, yet still took the time to look for faults and offer constructive criticism to the author. A well written review all around. |
How to write good reviews |
There is no set way to write a helpful review, however there are various methods by which you can write some of the best reviews on Newgrounds. Here are two of the very best: Method 1 - List the things you liked about the flash e.g. "The dialogue was hilarious". - List the things you disliked about the flash e.g. "Frame-rate was choppy". - List the things you think could be changed e.g. "Add a mute button". Method 2 - Give a score from 1-10 on the quality of the visuals and explain your reasons for it. - Give a score from 1-10 on the quality of the sound and talk about it. - Give a score from 1-10 on the quality of the content and again explain why you chose this score. - Give an overall score from 1-10 and a short summary. |
Great reviewers |
Here are a few of of the best reviewers on NG. Of course I can't include every great reviewer on NG, this is just a sample. Take a look at their reviews and see if you could learn something from them (and of course we had to plug our own ones ;). |

Review Request Club |
For those of you who have a true determination to improve your review quality, and perhaps rack up a lot more reviews, the RRC is the club for you. Every week, a list of flashes and audio to be reviewed is posted. Doing a review on each submission earns you points, as does putting the club's name at the bottom of the review. For more information and to join the club, please click on the link below. |

Reviews: final note |
Like anything worth doing, reviews are worth doing right. I think it a fair trade: the authors of flash submissions spend a massive amount of time an energy making a flash, so to repay them we put a few minutes work into making a helpful and constructive review. Speaking of which, why not practice by leaving a good review on this flash? ;D |
Making good posts |
Do you find yourself posting a lot of one-line or one-word replies in the BBS? Are you getting banned every other week? Do all your topics wind up getting deleted or locked? Sounds like you need our help. Here are some tips on posting practices which can immensely improve your post quality, and help you to have the best BBS experience possible. |
Posting tips |
1. Work on your post length One line posts look lazy, noobish and spammy (so don't get me started on one word posts). Nobody expects you to write walls of text, but writing at least 2-3 lines per post won't kill you, plus decent posts are needed to join certain clubs. Avoid double or triple-posting as well. We can all forget to wirte something, we are only human, but as much as possible try and keep everything to one post. Think before you hit the "Post Reply" button. |
2. Don't feed the troll/Ignore the spammers Trolls in a nutshell are attention-seekers, they will say ANYTHING that will provoke a response. Don't flame them, don't reason with them, just ignore them. A mod will take care of them pretty quickly with a nice ban. This goes for spammers as well. Most of us have made the mistake of posting in spam topics, only to receive a ban because of it. For this reason, you are again better off ignoring them and letting the moderators deal with it. |
3. Post in the correct forum This one is pretty simple, yet so many topics are locked for being in the wrong forum. How many times has a video-game related topic been made in General, or a flash- related query posted in Where is/How to? There are 9 different all-access forums for a reason, so before posting, think to yourself "Is there a more suitable forum to post this topic in?" If everyone did this, the BBS would be much more tidy and have fewer needlessly locked threads. |
4. Use the damn search bar This may be the single-biggest reason for threads getting locked, apart from them being annoying or stupid. We have a search bar for the forums, it may not be perfect, but it works. Most of the time if you search before making a topic you will find that a thread already exists. Use the search bar, please. It takes much less effort than starting a whole new topic, and saves both you and the moderators time and energy. |
5. Be helpful, especially to noobs We all make mistakes, especially those of us who are new to the site. If someone makes an error like posting in the wrong forum, don't flame them, help them. Point them in the right direction instead of attacking them. Nobody benefits from you being an asshole, a little help goes a long way. Remember, even you were a noob once. |
Newgrounds Department of Defense |
One of NG's most prosperous and longest surviving clubs, the NGDD was set up with one goal in mind: improving all aspects of Newgrounds thus making it a better place. Currently the club is led by Supreme Commander Phantom, Commander AnalPenguinFarming and General DarkSoldier. Any queries or questions you may have can be directed towards these guys. Below are links to the NGDD thread and the NGDD account, which has loads of useful info about the club, how to join and what they do. |
NGDD thread |
NGDD account |
NGDD structure |
The NGDD is currently made up of 5 Departments: - BBS Department - Flash Department - Portal Department - Audio Department - Internal Affairs Department I will now explain each department in detail and requirements to join, with the exception of the Internal Affairs, which does not apply to new members. Once you meet the criteria, if you apply and are accepted you will be on probation status for a period of time to see how good a potential NGDD member you would be. At the end of this period, remind Phantom or another leader to you can be accepted. |
BBS Department |
The purpose of the BBS Department is to be responsible, non-spamming posters who put effort into their posts. They must set an example for the rest of the BBS, and act as role models for new users. They must strive to keep a friendly BBS environment, and offer help to other posters, especially in the Where is/ How to? forum Department requirements for membership: Be a responsible, good, non-spamming poster and have at least 10 good posts. That's all! This is a very open department for new members and old ones alike. |
Flash Department |
The purpose of the Flash Department is helping aspiring flash artists to become the best they possibly can. They are encouraged to share tips, discuss tricks of their own, write tutorials, make collabs, and make sure they are active in creating flashes of their own. Department requirements for membership: One flash submission that passed judgment, and shows artist potential (not spam) Doesn't have to be a solo flash, can also be a part of a collaborative effort. |
Portal Department |
The purpose of the Portal Department is based around protecting the portal from not only spam submissions, but also abusive reviews. The members are meant to blam and protect, flag abusive reviews, and leave helpful reviews for flash and audio artists. Department requirements for membership: 100 b/p points OR Bronze or better whistle OR 10 good reviews. However a mix of all 3 is recommended, and will increase chances of getting in. |
Audio Department |
The purpose of the Audio Department is to help monitor the threads being posted in the Audio Forum as well as reviewing other audio submissions in an effort to help other audio artists. Department requirements for membership: 1 passed audio submission as well as the interest in continuing audio. |
NGDD: Final words |
The NGDD always needs new members in order to survive. Why not join today? Direct all questions to Phantom, AnalPenguinfarming or DarkSoldier. |
NGPD thread |
NGPD website |
Newgrounds Police Department |
The NGPD was set up as a place for members with a "police" rank. This now stretches to anyone who has a rank between Portal Security and Police Captain inclusive. At the moment the club is led by Commisssioner TailsPrower, who will be happy to answer all NGPD-related questions. Below are links to the NGPD thread and the NGPD webiste, which has a lot of VERY IMPORTANT info about the club, how to apply for membership etc. |
NGPD membership requirements |
One of the following ranks from Portal Security to Police Captain: |
At least 50 BBS Posts |
Once you have satisfied these criteria, you may apply to join the NGPD. Once TailsPrower sees your application, he will either turn you away due to poor post quality, or accept you on an NGPD apprenticeship. |
NGPD Apprenticeship |
Once your application is accepted by TailsPrower, you will become an NGPD apprentice for a week. During this period, you are encouraged to be active in the NGPD and make a good impression on fellow members. At the end of this week, remind TailsPrower that your apprenticeship is up, and assuming you've been helpful and active, you will become a full NGPD officer! |
One important thing... |
The NGPD is NOT a blam crew, nor is it a mass-voting group. They are involved in the whistling of rule-breaking flash, develping stronger whistling and voting ethics, and general protection of the Portal. With this in mind, if you join, please do not post a link to an abusive flash and tell everyone to flag it. Explain why you feel it is abusive, and if your fellow officers agree, they will flag it. The NGPD are not the official Police of Newgrounds (that title is reserved for mods and admins); their name stems from the badges needed to join. However, they do take great pride in protecting the Portal as much as possible. Most of all, the NGPD wants YOU to join, as officers are constantly moving up the Elite Guard Barracks through promotion to the rank of Private. So good luck! |
NGPD: Final words |
The NGPD encourages all members to vote fairly, behave appropriately and not get involved in any quarrels. They have no real enemies, however they are against those who make abusive reviews and flashes. Overall though, the NGPD has some of the nicest NG members on the site, so sign up today! |
EGB thread |
EGB FAQ's |
Elite Guard Barracks |
Among the oldest of NG's crews, the Elite Guard Barracks was started by Eaglerockfor NG users with a rank of Private or higher. This means that you need a minimum of 2,500 b/p points in order to join, however you need to satisfy other criteria also (more on that later). While Eaglerock is still the Chief Barracks Officer, at this time he is inactive, so please contact SlashFirestorm, Phantom or NEVR for more information. Failing that, you can contact any other EGB members, myself included. Below is a link to the EGB thread and their FAQ threads. PLEASE READ THE FAQ's, THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT! |
EGB membership requirements |
- Rank of Private or higher (minimum 2,500 b/p points). - High post quality (no one-liners or being an asshole). - High review quality (abusive reviews can result in rejection from the EGB) - An intact whistle, in other words, no Garbage whistles. |
If you meet these criteria, you may apply to join the EGB! Once you've made your application in the thread, SlashFirestorm will begin discussions about your membership. |
EGB membership discussion |
Upon seeing your application, Recruitment Officer SlashFirestorm will start a thread where current members will vote on whether you should join. This sounds pretty serious, but as long as you meet the minimum requirements and are a decent user you should have no problems. Be patient however, these discussions can take anything from a day to half a week depending on different factors. When the EGB decide if you can join or not you will be informed by SlashFirestorm via PM. If you are rejected he will explain the reasons why, so you may apply again in the future as long as you improve. |
A while back Eaglerock created a document outlining the beliefs and practices of the EGB. It can be found in the FAQ link provided earlier, however here's a brief summary of what we stand for: - We stand for giving every flash a fair vote, no matter what. - We stand for protecting the Portal in every way possible. - We do not tell anyone how to vote, no matter what. - We are not against any group of flash artists, no matter what. As with the NGPD, we have no real enemies. In saying that, we are against abusive reviews and flashes. |
The EGB Manifesto |
EGB: Final words |
As I've said, the EGB has no sworn enemies. However, we have very strong allies. Many members are also part of the NGDD. Even more are former members of the NGPD. The EGB has officers in place to maintain these bonds, as we share the comon goal of protecting Newgrounds. If you are qualified, the EGB would love to have you on board. This is Corporal RohantheBarbarian and Lieutenant Corky52 signing out! |
Newgrounds FAQ |
Seasoned Newgrounders need not watch this section of the guide. Ok, you are probably thinking "WTF, how dumb do you think we are?" Well the fact is that not enough people spend time looking at this, and end up asking silly questions in threads which wind up getting locked. The FAQ is located at the top of the NG screen, but for those of you who are feeling lazy, here's a link: |
