Abusive Review Guide 2: How to find abusive reviews |
Hello there! For those of you who have not seen the original, you can find it by clicking on the GO! button below (all links open in a new tab/window). This guide includes details not found in the previous one, including tips on finding abusive reviews, flagging flashes and even a short quiz! Also new to this flash is the work of Corky52, a Newgrounds buddy of mine, and quite possibly a future review mod. He himself was once an abusive reviewer, but he has reformed his ways and is now an expert on the subject. So sit back, relax, take it in and enjoy! |

Recap: Why flag abuse? |
Flagging review abuse not only helps to keep Newgrounds clean, it also allows you to improve your Whistle status by earning whistle points. These whistles vary from Garbage (bad) to Deity (good), and all points in between. A better whistle means you have a greter effect when you blow it, as well as proof that you are a good review flagger. The different whistle levels can be seen below: |
Finding abusive reviews |
Ok, so you have seen the original flash, and you now know what is abusive. The problem is, now you cannot find any! Never fear, for there are a few ways to find them. I will list a few of the best ways to find these: - Rage's thread. - Top 50 submssions. - Front page submissions. - Parodies. - Popular artist submissions. - Spam using the name of a popular artist/series. - Controversial submissions. - Submissions from flash crews (e.g. Clock Crew). - Google. |
Rage's thread |
If you watched my previous submission I explained this thread in great detail. As well as posting links to abusive submissions, you can find and flag reviews found by other people. As always however be sure that it is abusive, as not everyone knows exactly what is abusive, so use your own judgement. Be sure to check the date of posted abuse as well, since if it is too old it won't be deleted and you may lose points. A link to the thread features below: |
Top 50 submissions |
The Newgrounds Top 50 is the collection of the very best Newgrounds has to offer. However, some people try and find fault with everything, so even these heavyweights attract abuse. For example, Tankmen often is criticised for the one-dimensonal nature of the humour e.g. "OMG dis is shit all it is is cok joks ur a fag". Similarly, the Super Mario Bros. Z series comes under fire for being a sprite animation e.g. "Any1 can use sprites u fuking loser" |
Front page submissions |
A lot of great stuff makes it onto the front page on Newgrounds. However occasionally something unpopular makes it on. For example, some time ago the flash video "Metal Gear Funnies" was put on the front page, and an almighty shitstorm of abuse ensued. Apart from the usual "blam" and "fuck you" abusive reviews, here you can find anotherkind: front page abuse. Anything like the below will be deleted unless there is a constructive review accompanying it: - Why is this shit on the front page? - Who put this on frontpage? It's crap. - This junk doesn't deserve to be showcased on the front page! |
Parodies |
Speaking of Metal Gear Funnies, parodies are often subject to a great deal of abuse, especially from fanboys. Anything such as Stupid Mario Bros. Z, Legend without Zelda, or any other parodies of popular games and flashes can often attract abuse from petty fanboys who cannot stand idly by as their cherished movie or game gets trashed and made fun of. A guaranteed source of abuse. |
Popular artist submissions |
Every now and again, we get a submission from the most respected of Newgrounds flash contributors. Egoraptor, Adam Phillips, Michael Swain, Krinkels, the list goes on. Sometimes however, if an artist in a bid to satisfy their fans stays with the same style too long, a group of people who hate their work forms, sometimes this group is even larger than the fanbase. For example, every time illwillpress releases a new Foamy cartoon (recently he has released Door Holding and Squirrel Songs 6), he is hit with a torrent of abuse from those who claim that he is effectively stealing awards by using the same trace bitmap backgrounds and basic Foamy animation for years. |
Spam using the name of a popular flash/series |
We have all seen these. People who use the name of a popular artist or series in order to get their crappy submissions passed. These often attract abuse for being spammers as well as angering fans of the artist/series. Recently we have witnessed the imposter "KrinkIes" (impersonating Krinkels) submitting spammy Madness flashes. Dozens of Madness fans were outraged, and many left abusive reviews on his submissions. Similarly, submissions such as "Pico's School 3" and "Metal Gear Awesome 2.5" attract abuse from people furious at the usage of the name to pass judgement. |
Controversial submissions |
Anything which touches on a controversial issue can often be an abusive breeding ground. Examples include, but are not limited to, religion, terrorism and politics. For example, there is an old submission called "Crucify-me Jesus" which was made several years ago yet still attracts abuse even today. I am totally against this flash personally, and frankly it disgusts me. However, I do not feel the need as some people do to tell the author to kill himself, call him all manner of names, and wish him to go to hell. In a nutshell, controversy breeds abuse. |
Submissions from flash crews |
Clock Crew, Kitty Krew, Barney Bunch, Socom Squad, Lock Legion............. Newgrounds is swamped with various flash crews. Some of them make very good flashes, others spam the Portal with crap. However, good or bad, they are often targeted for abuse, as are their flashes. Anything like "Fuck da Clock Crew!" or "The KK are assholes!" is completely unacceptable (even if it is occasionally justified). Keep an eye out for any submissions that have been submitted by a flash crew, often people lie in wait just to abuse the hell out of these guys. |
Google is a rather overlooked tool in the search for abuse. To use it effectively: - Go to Google Advanced Search. - Use search terms such as "blam" or "stolen" to find abusive reviews. - Search in the domain "www.newgrounds.com/portal/reviews". Pages of results should come up, but be sure that any reviews that you find are not out of date. The results obtained by using the terms "fuck you", "blam" and "stolen" can be found below. |
Flagging submissions |
Enough about flagging reviews, lets talk about flagging submissions. On every Under Judgement submission you should see the below links. If the submission falls under any of the following, click it and give as much information as possible so that the admins understand why you flagged it. If enough people report a flash it is placed under "Administrative Review". If it is found that the flash did break a rule it will be deleted and you will recieve whistle points. BUT BE CAREFUL! If the admins find it is not breaking any rules, you will lose A LOT of points. Only blow the whistle if you are sure it breaks a rule. I will now explain each of these seperately. |
Stolen submissions |
No explanation needed. However, it is hard to be sure if a submission is stolen, so I will explain a method of determining if a flash is stolen: - Watch/play it. If it has a preloader from another website, check the email of the person who submitted it (below the links to blow the whistle). - If the email does not match the original website, check the comments. If it is something like "LOL I hope u like this", get suspicious. - Check if the author has previous submissions. If there are none, or if the others are under Admin Review, alarm bells should ring with you, especially if the submission is very good. -Search Google for the movie/game. If you find the SAME flash elsewhere, post a link to the "stolen" and original sites on Rage's thread, and get their opinion. If a few other members agree that it's stolen, blow the whistle and provide a link to the original. |
Malicious submissions |
Rare, but still present. Anything that opens a load of pop-ups, makes your browser crash, or messes with your computer in any way falls under this category. Post a link in Rage's thread, explaining that you think it is malicious, warning them what it does, and asking them what they think. If they agree then blow the whistle and explain why you find this malicious. |
Unsuitable submissions |
Easy to spot. Anything which is very racist, sexist, hateful against any group of people, or contains hardcore porn or child abuse falls under this category. Again, always consult other people in Rage's thread before acting. Give a link, tell them why you think it is unsuitable, and ask their opinion. That last part is particularly important; you may find it racist but it might be mocking racism as opposed to perpetuating it. If others agree, blow the whistle and explain your reasons for doing so. |
Blowing the Whistle: Miscellaneous info |
- The higher your whistle level, the less flags are needed for the flash to be placed under review. In other words, it may take 20 Normal whistle users to get a submission placed under review, wheras it may only take 3 or 4 Deity users. - If you flag a submission, and it passes judgement, YOU DO NOT LOSE WHISTLE POINTS. - If you flag a submission, and it is blammed, YOU DO NOT GET WHISTLE POINTS. - If you flag a submission, vote on it as normal. That way, if it is blammed or passed, you can still get save/blam points. |

Q1. Which of these three moderators is NOT a review mod? |
1. kidray76 2. Malachy 3. BananaBreadMuffin |
WRONG! |
Please try again! |
CORRECT! |
- kidray76 is a review moderator - Malachy is both a review and a BBS moderator. - BananaBreadMuffin is a BBS moderator |
Q2. Which of the following statements about abusive reviews is true? |
1. If you mark a review as useless and it gets deleted you get a whistle point. 2. Even if a flash is stolen saying it in a review is abusive. 3. If a review of yours is deleted then you lose whistle points. |
-If you mark a review as useless, and it is deleted, you receive NO whistle points. -If a flash is stolen, and someone writes it in their review, it IS abusive, even if they have proof. -If you have one of reviews deleted, you DO NOT lose any whistle points (but you should work on your reviewing). |
Q3. I have a garbage whistle. I flagged loads of reviews incorrectly so it’s impossible to get out now. |
1. True 2. False |
No matter how many reviews you marked incorrectly, and even though it may seem like you are never going to get out, with enough correct flags you can dig yourself back out of the hole. It requires patience and persistence, but it CAN be done. |
Q4. When you find an abusive review, what should you do? |
1. Do nothing, I think they are funny. 2. Flag it and keep it to myself. 3. Flag it and share it on Rage's abusive review thread. |
- Abusive reviews can be funny sometimes, but they are just a waste of review space. You should flag them. - Keeping it to yourself makes it harder for the review to get deleted, as for it to be brought to attention a few people must flag it. - By sharing, you will help others get points too, and will also find reviews from other people. |
Q5. Which of the following is NOT abusive? |
1. I hope this gets blammed. 2. Why wasn't this blammed?. 3. I thought this was going to get blammed, but it wasn't. |
Answers 1 and 2 are abusive because they express a negative desire for the submission to be blammed. Answer 3 is not abusive because although it mentions blamming, it is not inherently negative. It would only become abusive if the reviewer was to include something abusive along with it. |
Q6. Which of the following is the LEAST abusive? |
1. Whoever made this is a fag. 2. This flash is for fags. 3. The guy below me is a fag. |
- Answer 1 abuses the author, so is 100% abusive and will always be deleted. - Answer 2 insults the flash. It should be deleted, but not always. Be wary of this type of borderline abuse. - Answer 3 abuses another reviewer, so is 100% abusive and will always be deleted. |
Q7. How many whistle points do you need for a Deity whistle? |
1. 300 points and over. 2. OVER NINE THOUSAND!!! 3. I don't know. |
At least you are honest. Truth is, only the Newgrounds admins know how many whistle points are needed for a Deity whistle. As for us mere mortals, we just have to keep flagging abuse, cross our fingers and hope that we are getting ever closer to our goal. |
Q8. Negative whistle points are worth more than positive ones. |
This is why it is vitally important to flag reviews correctly. One incorrect flag would need several correct ones to cancel it out. SO BE CAREFUL! |
Q9. You find an Under Judgement submission that contains hardcore porn, what do you do? |
1. Flag it as having hardcore porn, then post a link in Rage's thread, explaining why you flagged it. 2. Wow, REAL porn on NG? That's hawt. It should stay! |
If you honestly think this is correct, you are a lost cause (and a pervert apparently) |
Obviously hardcore pornography is unsuitable, as thousands of minors use this site. Blow the whistle, then post a link on Rage's thread, explaining why you think the content is unsuitable for submission. |
Q10. You find a stolen flash, you have proof, but it has passed judgement, what should you do? |
1. Do nothing, what's the point? 2. Write a review telling the author I know that they stole it. 3. Get as much info as possible, ask a few members of Rage's thread what they think, then send a PM to Wade with the details |
Doing nothing helps nobody. Writing a "stolen" review is abusive. If you have irrefutable evidence and are 100% sure it is stolen, then send a PM to Wade with as much info as possible. There is every chance he will then have it deleted if he agrees it is stolen. You get nothing for it, except the gratitude of the NG community. |

GARBAGE WHISTLE |
Wow, you must not have any idea how the whistle system works. Seriously, stop reading this, go watch my first flash (link on first page). |
NORMAL WHISTLE |
You know some basics, but you still have a lot to learn. Go and watch the original and this one first, then retake the quiz. |
BRONZE WHISTLE |
You have a decent amount of knowledge but not enough. Check out both my submissions again and pay close attention. |
SILVER WHISTLE |
Very good, you seem to have a firm grasp on what is and isn't abusive. Take a look at my first flash again just to polish off your knowledge. |
GOLD WHISTLE |
Amazing, you know a great deal about the whistle system. Go forth and flag! |
DEITY WHISTLE!!! |
You are a flagging god! Keep up the good work, you could be a future review mod! |
Epilogue |
What possessed me to make a new one, just a week after the last one? You did. I got so many reviews saying they loved it, some asked questions, some offered suggestions. I then realised there was so much more I should have included in the first, that a second could be made. And here it is. All credit to Corky52 as well, his knowledge, tips and input has helped make this a much better flash than the first. I hope you enjoyed and learned from this. Hopefully a few of you will get Deity whistles because of tips you picked up here. Thanks for watching! P.S. at the time of making this Corky and I both have Gold whistles, and soon will have Deity. Proof that these guides work! |
