The foundation of every planet is the texture. It’s what makes it a planet and not just a ball. It’s what will trick the viewer into believing and seeing a planet and not a distorted sphere. The key to good texture is quality, so in digital art, size. All of the textures that I use for my planets are all at least 5000 x 5000 pixels. Since you have to distort your texture to exponential sizes, by scaling it down you can regain the quality and detail of the original texture. There are a few methods of creating a texture, however in this tutorial I will explain my method. You will learn how to find textures and combine them into one giant texture. To create a large enough base texture you must find many smaller textures and blend them to make them one. There are a few places to find these. The first and most obvious is Deviant Art. There is a vast and amazing array of different kinds of textures offered here on dA. |
Other places include using Google earth or other satellite image sites like MODIS. There is no set limit to how many you collect, or what they look like, but it is necessary that they all slightly resemble the others (i.e. If you want a dessert planet, collect desert satellite images or sand like textures, if you are using Google Earth, take multiple screen shots from the same region or continent.) Just keep in mind you will be blending them all together at the end, and also remember you will have to cover at least a 5000 x 5000 image including overlapping the textures (so think 7000 x 7000 for a 5000 x 5000 texture) |
Once you have all your textures ready it is time to create you texture document and place your small textures. Create a new document at the size you want (You can go all the way up to 9999x9999 but photoshop will not be able to spherize any larger.) Since you will be working with giant textures and documents, it will be hard on your computer and most likely will lag, so be warned it gets worse the larger you go, but be patient. Drag all of the small textures you collected over to the new doc. The next step will define how your planet will look and how easy it will be to blend. Arrange your textures to cover the entire document and overlap all surrounding textures. The overlap is the key to blending, so you can’t have any gaps. Remember when arranging that about 50% of your texture won’t even be visible in the end effect and that only the centre will be seen. So focus on the centre. Arrange by region, color (you can use ctrl+U to adjust colors), similar land masses and etc. Now the next step is easy if you have CS3. All you have to do is to select all the layers and go to edit --> auto blend and then layer --> flatten image. This action works wonders for textures, and will blend it all for you. |
There will usually be small mistakes scattered around usually at gaps in the overlap or on the edge of the texture but they are all small and easy to fix with the healing brush or clone tool. If you are using anything below CS3 you will have to blend by hand. Flatten your image. Use a very, very soft healing brush to slowly blend out the edges. The Patch tool and spot healing brush will also work wonders, but it is a very slow, delicate process. Now you have your planet texture. Using the circular marquee tool, select the biggest circle you can, inverse the selection, delete the excess texture, re-select your circle, and spherize twice at 100% (make sure your circle of texture is selected, if it is not it will distort the shape as well). It won’t look to great at such a big size, but the next step is to save and resize it to fit the piece you are working on. |
The next step is to create the lighting or shadow of the planet. I will teach the two methods I use, based on where the light source is. There are two kinds of planet shadows, concave and convex. Always remember, no matter how 3D your picture looks, it is in reality only 2D, which means you have to fake it. Also, since we are creating art, we can bend the laws of nature for a more artistic look; a nicer look. For instance, in reality the shadow of a planet is very sharp, the transition from light to dark is not very faded and from the human eye looks almost like a straight line instead of a smooth blurry fade. Since we are artists, I choose to bend nature and make my transitions a much smoother fade. |
Convex The first shadow is convex. This is the shadowing that makes the light look much like a crescent, covering most of the planet in darkness. This method is very simple, but needs a lot of experimenting and fooling around to get just right. Duplicate your planet layer, select the new layer and fill it with black. You should now have just a black circle with the new black layer covering the texture layer below. that reaches outside of your planet. Then, Gaussian blur the shadow. How much you do it depends on the size of your planet, but do not over due it. Keep the transition short, but smooth. |
You should have some of the textured layer showing at the bottom where the shadow was blurred, so stretch the shadow layer to cover this up. Repeat the process of erasing the shadow outside of the planet. You should now have your planet mostly covered with black with a small crescent of planet showing. Drop the opacity of the shadow layer down (again, depending on how dark you want it and what you want it to look like, experiment) I dropped mine to 80%. You now have a planet shadowed using a convex method. This method is used when the light source is far away and/or behind the planet. |

Concave The second method is concave. This method is used when the light source is in front of the planet or very close. This method bends realism much more, but in my opinion has a much better looking effect. Instead of using a new shadow layer, we will be working of the textured layer only using the lighting effects filter. The only downfall to this method is that it is hard to get it just right. So it is my strong recommendation that instead of trying to get the setting right and using the filter only once, you take very subtle steps and try to use the filter 2 or 3 times on the layer. It is pretty straight forward. Filter--> Render --> Lighting effects. Play around with it. Every time I use it i still have to play around with the settings to get it just right. Again, the brightness and darkness depends on your specific piece and how you want it to look. Experiment. |
Coloring is essential for a planet. If you slack on coloring you may end up with a green desert planet or a red ice planet, or maybe even pink oceans. The cool part is that sometime you don't even have to worry about it. If you are using satellite images, obviously the coloring is perfect and so you don't have to color anything. However, if you are using miscellaneous textures like concrete or grunge, the colors may be off. One killer mistake people make in space art is trying to contrast the colors too much or too little. You don't want a solid blue planet but you also don't want very saturated red and green planet. It is key to find a middle ground. If you are using pre-colored textures, desaturate a little but and use a photo filter (image-adjustments-photo filter) to even the color scheme out. Don't over do it, remember, you want the middle ground, but try and even it out. If it is a cool colored piece use around 20% cooling photo filter, and the same for a warm piece. If you are using misc. textures, you May have to color them by hand. Create a new layer and set the blending mode to "Color." I like to use a cloud brush or a grunge brush, but no matter what kind you use it needs to be abstract and no hard lines. You are trying to color regions and blend it nicely according tot he texture. Select mid level saturated colors and mid level brightness. |
Brush according to region of the texture at around 50% opacity. Use small brush strokes and big brushes. Experiment, there is no set way to brush it. Once you are done, erase the excess colors outside of the planet using the same technique as the shadow. You can also create a base color layer under the first color layer and above the planet. Select the perimeter of the planet and on a new layer fill it with the color that you want the base of your planet to be and set it to the blending mode "Color". Drop to opacity to around 20 - 30%. |

The atmosphere of the planet is key to really bring out the brightness and roundness of a planet. Since there are so many variations you can really customize your planet and find a good atmosphere for you. For example, if you have a green luscious earth like planet you will have a very strong blue atmosphere. But if you have a dead desert planet you may not have any atmosphere at all, or a very light red one. The first step is to duplicate you planet layer, select it, and fill it with black. Like the shadow step you should have a black circle completely covering your planet. Set the blend mode to screen, and it should disappear. Now go to the blending options menu (double click on the layer or right click — blending options) Here is where you can play around with it. I will explain the most basic and you can make your own customizations yourself. Go to outer glow. Select a nice blue color (I don't like to change the saturation or brightens and just move it to a blue hue) and bump the opacity all the way up to 100%. The size of the glow will always depend on the size of the planet. The example I am using is 1000 x 1000, so I set the spread to 0 and the size to 35 and dropped the range down by 5. This will give your planet a nice outer haze. You don't want it to big, so be careful. Next step is inner glow. Try and use the same color of blue and set the size to 250 px. You now have your atmosphere, but it encircles the entire planet, so now you need to erase it on the dark side of the planet. you will notice that if you just erase the layer now the glow will reposition to the edge of the black. what you need to do is create a new transparent layer, select both of the layers (new layer and atmosphere layer), right click, and merge layers. |
If you just merge down it will just add the blending options to the newly added layer as well, so you have to make sure you select both and right click. Then reset the blending mode to screen. You can now erase. Use a big BG soft brush for a smooth erase (sorry for the new planet in the example images, PS crashed on me). You can create al sorts of atmospheres, one thing you can to is to duplicate the atmosphere layer to make a much brighter full bodied atmosphere. Or if you make a small atmosphere (a very small inner glow with a fairly high range) you can duplicate it and set the top layer to color dodge. If there are two light sources in your piece, the best way I have found is to create the atmosphere for just one, then duplicate the layer and rotate it around the planet. |

This next section will explain how to put a city on your planet and give it lights. I will explain two different techniques which can be used separately or combined. Since these techniques happen all through out the planet creating process, I will be making a new planet from the beginning and skip the steps you have already learned. The first is by using satellite images of a city. You don't need a lot of this type of texture, only 1000x1000 will work. If you are using google earth, try and find a city that is spread out and remember to try and find one in the region and climate of your planet. What you will be doing is actually adding the city directly into your base texture. This way it fits the planet perfectly. You can either use it as one of your many small textures in the original create of the texture, or you can add it in on top. Either way, keep in mind that a lot of the texture is pushed to the side when you sphereize, so keep the city close to the center. Positioning is actually quite hard because You want the city to end up on the dark side of the planet (so you can see the lights) and not be overwhelming. If you are adding it in on top, position it first where you want it to go. Merge down and use the healing brush to blend it together. Depending on the texture you can try to use the blending modes as well (soft light, multiply, overlay) Now finish your planet, the next step is after the planet it made (and remember, you want the city to be in the dark side, so shade accordingly). Once you are done, create a new layer and fill it with black. Go to filter — render — lens flare — 105mm Prime - 100% brightness. Center it as much as possible, you don't want it angled to get ride of the excess crap you don't need. Go to image — adjustments — brights/contrast and set the brightness to -150. Set the blend mode to color dodge and resize it to be very very tiny. This is your city light. Move it over your city. Remember, it needs to be SMALL! Duplicate the layer over and over and over for more lights. Every 10 or so, resize it. Use more small lights and less larger ones. Start larger and slowly get smaller. |
The next method is creating glowing lines, like crop circles, on your planets. I don't know why these are scientifically accurate, but they look cool. Create a new layer. Use small white lines and circles, randomly. Have the end points connect. How they turn out is obviously up to you, you don't have to use just lines and circles, experiment, go wild. But keep in mind you will be sphereizing these, so make them way small, a lot smaller than you actually want them. With the crop circle lights layer still selected, control click on the planet layer (so you select the perimeter of the planet while the lights layer is still active) and sphereize twice at 100%. This will sphereize your lights to fit the planet perfectly. Set the blend mode to multiply. They should have disappeared. Now go to the blending options menu and use an inner glow set to color dodge. Play around with the numbers until you find something you like. If it work well, do the same with outer glow. Once its all done, blur the lights layer once or twice to smooth it out. The final step is to lower the opacity to around 75%. You now have two different methods of creating city lights. |

The final stage is planet rings. The rings of a planet are thousands of small asteroids and debris caught in the gravitational pull of the planet. The first method to create rings is very easy and simple. create a new layer and go to filter - render - clouds (make sure your colors are blank and white). Using the circle marque tool, select as much of the cloud layer that you can. Go to filter - distort - twirl at 999. depending on your preference you can do this more than once, or less than me, but i only did it once. Feather the selection (again, the amount depends on the size of your planet and piece, for mine since im working on a 1000x1000 i feathered it by 50), inverse your selection and delete. You should now have a feathered swirl of clouds. Next, select a small circle in the center and feather it again (not as much since its a smaller circle) and instead of inverting the selection just delete as is. You should now have a doughnut. Resize and warp the ring layer to fit to the planet. In free transform, use options like perspective and flatten it quite a bit. Place it over your planet where you want it to go. Control click the planet and erase the rings that are behind the planet. I like to bump up the contrast to really bring out the rings. Set the ring layer to screen. Erase any hard lines or edges and sharpen it once. Finally, you have to darken the side that is in the shadow of the planet. Using a big soft brush, burn at a low setting the dark side. Some people like to add noise, but i dont like that effect. You now have a fairly simple planet ring. |
The other method is to use actual asteroid renders to create a much more realistic ring. For this example i will be using hameeds asteroid field. The thing to keep in mind here is that rings are thousands of small rocks, they can barely be noticeable. I create a line of the asteroid field, just resize it, duplicate it, place it, duplicate it again, etc. Merge all the segments together and duplicate that layer. Flip it 180 degrees and overlap it on the first one to start getting rid of any noticeable patters and bulk-en up the ring. Then repeat the irst process, resize, duplicate and place. Now for the tricky part, right now you only have a straight line, and you need to make a line. I use the warp option in the transform menu and try to make a half oval. Dont over due it. Reposition the segment so the top end is pointing straight up, duplicate it, and place the new segment on-top. this will create even more of a curve. merge down. Duplicate that layer and flip it horizontally. You now have a planet ring. follow the same post steps as stated above. |
