RohantheBarbarian's Guide to Abusive Reviews |
Hello there! This is my first flash submission. I'm learning the ropes at the moment, but due to by lack of animating talent, I thought this could be an interesting project. For those of you who have a good knowledge of how the whistle system works, please don't leave reviews telling me that "You're stating the obvious" or "We know all this". This flash is to help people new to Newgrounds understand how the system works, and what is considered abusive. Anyway, enough talk, let's get on with the tutorial. |
BACK |
BACK |
What is an abusive review? |
An abusive review is one which breaches one or more of the guidelines in the Newgrounds FAQ (see "Reviewing Submissions"). You can "flag" a review which breaches these guidelines by clicking on the small yellow "x" located below the review. It is important however to take care in what you flag, as reviews which appear to breach these guidelines may not actually be abusive. What is considered abusive will be demonstrated later in the tutorial. |
Why flag abusive reviews? |
If you look at your userpage, you'll see a whistle on the left side. This represents your whistle level. Flagging abusive reviews that are deleted will get you "whistle points". If you earn enough of these your whistle can be upgraded from Normal to Bronze, the Silver, then Gold and finally the almight Deity whistle! But be careful! If you flag reviews incorrectly, you earn negative whistle points and could get a Garbage whistle. You will want to avoid this, it can take ages to get a good whistle again (trust me I know what it's like). Keep in mind that negative points are worth more than positive ones, so only flag when you are 100% sure it is abusive. |
What is considered abusive? |
The following is a list of types of reviews that are 100% abusive and will always be deleted. I have determined these through experience, advice from fellow users and review moderators: -Blam reviews -Author/reviewer abuse -Stolen reviews -Spam/Flooding -Advertising -Chain mail/Text pictures I will now explain each of these in detail. |
Blam reviews |
Any review which mentions blamming is considered abusive. If you don't like a flash, vote appropriately. Examples: -Blam this piece of crap! -Blammed/I blammed this. -Why wasn't this blammed? -I hope this gets blammed. Any reviews which mention blamming in a negative sense are abusive. The above are the most common examples, but are not the only types you will come across. |
Author/reviewer abuse |
Verbally abusing an author in a vulgar way is 100% abusive. As is doing so to a reviewer, plus it is against the guidelines to refer to another reviewer you didn't agree with. Examples: -You fucking asshole! -I hope you fucking die! -Go die/kill yourself! -Are you retarded or just a faggot? -(insert reviewer name) shut the fuck up now or I'll make you shut up. -(insert reviewer name) is a retard if he doesn't like this. -I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU, YOU CUNT!!! |
Stolen reviews |
If a reviewer thinks that a submission is stolen, they may not say so in their review, even if they have a link, and even if it actually is stolen. If you think a flash is stolen, PM Wade with as much info as possible, don't bitch about it in a review. Examples: -You stole this!/STOLEN! -Thief! I saw this on www.(insert address).com! -This is (insert name)'s flash, you stole it! Again, there are more types that you will come across, these are some common ones you will come across. |
Spam/flooding |
If a reviewer fills their review space with gibberish, or posts the same thing over and over without constructive criticism, it is abusive. In my opinion, avoid flagging unless it takes up more than 4 lines. Examples: -XDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXD -asklfnafklnalkfnsaflnasfsanfsaf -...................................................................................... -LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL -shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit -Any other repeated pattern that takes up more than 4 lines |
Advertising |
Using the review space to promote an outside website is against the rules and is abusive. Examples: -Dude, nice flash! Check out this one at www.(insert address).com. -There's a better game at www.(insert address).com, check it out! -Want free flash games? Go to www.(insert address).com. Anything which encourages others to visit an unrelated outside website is considered abusive and will be deleted. |
Chain mail/Text pictures |
Both of these are frowned upon and will be deleted. Examples (chain mail): -Ok if you read this you have 5 minutes to put this message on 10 other submissions or your family will die! -Any crap like the above. Examples (Text picture): -A middle finger made up of different letters and numbers. -Any other picture made from characters like numbers, letters and punctuation marks. |
Tips |
- Some people would consider one word reviews such as "sucks" or short ones with no constructive criticism such as "this is crap" to be abusive. However, depending on the review mod they may or may not be deleted. In my opinion, you are better off flagging reviews which are definitely abusive, such as the ones I have shown earlier, - If you spot a review you think is abusive, for God's sake CHECK THE DATE!!! The date is located near the top of the review. If it is dated between 2006-2008, it is fine. But if it is dated any earlier, avoid it. Sometimes 2005 reviews will be deleted, but to be safe stick to ones from the last three years. |
- A very good place to find abusive reviews is Rage's thread. Here you can post a link to any abusive reviews you may find so that more people can flag them, making it more likely that they will be deleted, as well as find links to abusive reviews you would not have found yourself. If you have any questions relating to abusive reviews, the users there will be more than happy to help, myself included. But BE CAREFUL! Just because someone posts a link to a review does not mean you should automatically flag it! Look at it yourself, check the date, and use your own judgement before deciding to flag. A link to Rage's thread will feature later in the guide. |
- If in doubt, send a PM to a review mod. They are the true review experts, and will give you a definite answer which you know is correct. Ask nicely, and most will be happy to help. Just don't annoy them by sending 50 messages a day! A list of review mods can be found in the "Moderators" section of the Newgrounds FAQ, which I will provide a link to later. - Be patient! It takes time and effort to upgrade your whistle. If it was easy, every user would have a Deity whistle. Play it safe and only flag what you know will be deleted. It's a slow progression, but it is the best way to move towards the coveted Deity whistle. |
Epilogue |
You might be wondering: what possessed me to make this? Well the answer is that I know all too well how tricky the whistle system can be. Within a day of joining Newgrounds I had a Garbage whistle. I tried everything, but could not get back to Normal. Then I happened upon Rage's thread. I quickly learned what was considered to be abusive and would always be deleted. After a month of flagging carefully, I dug my way out of my hole and got back to Normal. Wiser now. I quickly worked my way up to Bronze. But I got cocky, I flagged tonnes of reviews that I shouldn't have, and went straight from Bronze to Garbage overnight. I was gutted. |
It took until last week to get my Normal whistle back. I flagged hundreds of reviews over the course of well over a month to dig myself out of my hole, but I did it. At the time of making this I have a Silver whistle. My goal is to achieve Deity before 2009. It will be hard, but I will be patient and careful. Finally, thanks for watching. I hope this will help a lot of people who find themselves stuck with a Garbage whistle to get themselves back on their feet. Just remember: it is hard, but it CAN be done.
