This lesson will help you get the
feel of flash.
Place your pointer over parts of
this Flash window to display
information on that part of the
Flash window.

This lesson will familiarise you with Symbols.
There are three types of symbols - Graphics, Movie clips, and Buttons.
Each have their purposes and advantages, for example the timeline of
a Movie Clip is independant of the main timeline.
The three symbols below are (in order) a graphic, a movie clip, and a
button. Place your pointer over the button and click on it to see how it
acts.

Select 'Graphic' and click
OK.
Now we are inside the
new symbol!

First we will learn how to create a symbol. Before we start, consider
what you want to use the symbol for. Creating the wrong type of symbol
may result in errors. We'll start with a Graphic symbol.
Click on Insert, New Symbol or press Ctrl+F8 to bring up this window:

Creating

Graphic symbols are the simplest of
symbols you can choose from. They
cannot have actionscript applied to
them, and their timeline is conrtolled
by the main timeline. They still have
their uses, they can be used if you
want a movie to play, but only play when the main timeline is playing.
Draw something, anything. There you go! Theres a basic symbol.
You can now use this symbol within your stage, or other symbols such
as movie clips.
Although symbols are used as more of a Static symbol, you can still
apply 'tween' to them. This will be explained in a later lesson.

Graphic

Movie Clips are slightly more advanced
then graphic symbols. Movie clips can
run independant of the timeline, and
they can have action script applied to
them.
Create a new symbol, but this time choose
a Movie clip. Draw something, or place
your graphic from the last section onto the
stage of the movie clip. Create a few key frames and move your drawing
to a different place in each key frame. Take your movie clip to your
main stage and test your movie (crtl + enter).
Notice it isn't effected by the number of frames in the scene?

Movie Clip

The only scripting element that movie clips lack, is triggering events
with the mouse. Thats where buttons come in, you can apply scripts to
them such as play, stop, nextframe etc.
The button timeline is unique compared to others, as it is based on
events rather than time. The key events are Up, Over, Down, and Hit.
Up, is when the button is up, over is when your mouse hovers over it,
down is when the button is being pressed and hit is an invisible area
which is used to make the buttons active area larger without modifying.
Make yourself a new symbol, this time a button. Draw in each frame
what you want it to look like in each event. Remember, you can't
animate here. To animate a button, you must create a movie clip, and
place that clip inside of the button, on the desired event.

Button

Frame by Frame

Once you're done doing this, you'll have a movie clip which works the
same as the one shown here. Look a little bit shotty?
Next we'll learn how to make a SMOOTHER frame sequence!

When you are done with this lesson, you
will know how to make a simple frame
by frame animation!
Start by making a new Movie Clip, and
adding 15 frames, making each of them
a key frame. Goto the first frame, and
draw something. Goto the next frame,
and draw what you want it to look like
for the next frame, and following frames.

Stop

Play

Once you're done with your first drawing, insert a keyframe into frame
two on ALL layers you want to animate. Because you're making a new
keyframe, the items on that layer stay there unless you delete them.
Now you can move the parts you want, or add on to them. Repeat this
until you finish your new movie clip!

Notice that stuff doesnt jump around the
place. This method is very similar to
what we just did, but instead of making
a bunch of frames at once, we'll make
them as we go, so don't add frames yet.
I suggest making each moving part on a
new layer, it will be easier to manage
this way, so make a new movie, and add
as many layers as you need, and draw!

You can see the onion skin is
selected in the timline, the button to
the right is similar, but only shows
onion skin outlines. This is useful
when there are lots of onion skins
overlapping.

Something to help you along with making your
frame by frame animations, is the Onion skin.
The lets you see more than one frame at once,
but other frames are transparent, or just an
outline of whats on them. In the timeline shown
below, the onion skin is selected. Click the next
button under the ninja to see what this makes
the stage appear as.

In this lesson, we are going to learn how to create Tweens, including
simple motion, shape, colour change and fading. Tweening simply
predicts what is going to happen in beTWEEN two events, and does it!
When you learn how tweening fully works, and start mixing effects you
can make complex animations in no time at all! Be sure that every time
you tween you use symbols, else flash makes them for you with really
messy names like Tween 1, Tween 2 etc. Very hard to track in the library
IMPORTANT: Each tweened object must be on its OWN layer. If you
place more than one object on a layer with Tweens, weird stuff happens.

Motion

Lets not dive in the deep end. First up, we're going to do a motion tween
that just moves across the screen. Start by making yourself a shape, and
converting to a movie or graphic symbol (or use one you already have).
Insert a new keyframe at frame 15 or so, and some down the track if you
like.
Select the keyframe on frame 15, and move your graphic to
where you want it to go. Right click on the frames in between
your keyframes, and select 'Create motion tween'. In between the key
frames should now be blue, with a solid line. If there is a dotted line,
something went wrong. Right click the final keyframe, and create motion
tween, this often fixes this problem.

end and in being the start. The amount defines how slow it
will be at the beginning or end of the tween. To make things
go slow at the beginning and the end, you need a keyframe
in the middle, with ease in at the start, and ease in at the end.

Doing what we did just then, instead of just repositioning the
object we're going to rotate it, and make it change in size.
Set yourself up with a symbol, and some keyframes.
Goto the keyframe where you want your change to end.
Select the Free Transform tool from the tools panel, and click on your
symbol to rotate it, stretch it, or resize it. If you think your tweens aren't
smooth enough, click the blue area between keyframes, and goto
properties where you can set the ease of the tween. Ease controls how
fast the tween is at the beginning or the end of the tween, out being the

It's time to learn how to change the colour and
transparency of objects progressionally. It's Not as
hard as you might think. Start by making a movie
clip with two graphics in it (make sure they aren't on the
same layer!), and 15 frames or so. Add a keyframe at the
end of each layer, and create motion tween on each of
them. Once you're done, select one of the keyframes (any one) and click
on the object on the layer your'e on. Goto the properties panel, where
you will see a dropdown menu titled 'color'. Open it up, and select
Alpha. You can now set the percentage of transparency applied to it.
Select your second object, and choose 'tint' in the color setting. Here you
can set the amount of tint applied, and the colour of tint. Now test your
movie clips, one should fade in/out, and the other should change colour!

Having trouble making your tweens move around corners and
follow a path without them going from point to point? There is an
easier way! We're going to use a guide layer to do this. A guide
layer is an invisible line, which is a path for an object to follow.
Use one of your movie clips from before, to save making a new
one. Right click on it in the library and click edit. Choose the
frame you wish to add a guide layer to, and click the add motion
guide button below the frames titles. Add as many frames as your
tween takes up. Draw a line with the pencil, or line tool to make
your path. Now at the keyframes, you need to place the objects
reference point ON the line in each keyframe you want to use the
path. Position it on the line where you want it to start, and finish.

convert your shapes to symbols, you just use the raw shapes. Once you
are done making your shape, make a keyframe at eg. frame 20. Now you
can alter your shape. Grab the pointer and turn it into a blob or a square.
If you want a new shape, insert a blank keyframe and draw the shape
there. Click the area between the keyframes, and open the
properties panel. There is a dropdown menu titled 'Tween'.
Open it, and select Shape. If you have drawn complex
shapes, it might look like the movie up the top.

Although you can do a great deal of things with motion
tween, you can't morph or alter shapes. This is where shape
tweening comes in useful.
Make yourself a new movie clip and draw yourself a shape.
Unlike motion tween, shape tweening doesn't require you to

Shape

these as you need. You can remove them by right
clicking and selecting 'remove hint'. Now goto the
end of your shape tween and position them at the
corresponding points. Note: When using hints
you must have 'snap to objects' enabled (the magnet
in tools)

shows how this works. Follow point B, and take notice of how the shape
moves according to the posotion of point B. Lets give this a go. Create a
new movie clip with a shape tween, how we did before. Click on the
first keyframe, and press Ctrl+Shift+H to add a Hint. Add as many of

This is an example of the mess you can end up with if you use
shape tween with complex shapes and don't set hints. Hints
are points which flash uses as reference as to where certain
parts of the shape have to be as it morphs. The example below
