Please wait... The NG Preloader will show up soon, with a background music to keep you busy It's the good thing the music has an on/off button in case it starts to get annoying :) [A loading bar should be here] Meh, I still don't know how to make a Pre-loader for the Pre-loader, if you know what I mean, lol Maybe its because actionscript reminds me of C++, and I LOATHE C++ ! bleh... Anyway... |

Dear Newgrounds users, This Flash is dedicated to helping the people who think that their work always gets unfairly *blammed*. I just want to say, I might be harsh in this movie, but above all, I'll be very honest.. Please appreciate that I'm trying my best to help :) I'll usually refer to "Newgrounds" with the commonly used abbreviation: "NG" |
Click to proceed |
This Flash will be as entertaining as possible, you won't read long boring stuff that makes no sense, I'm just like you all and I love to be as informal and clear as possible. Also, I'll be including lots of examples, some of them I've spent lots of effort on making, otherwise known as "Cool Examples".. If you don't feel like going through stuff you already know about, then go to the Chapter Selection and you'll find the cool stuff there. |
Some of you might disagree with me on parts of this flash, I just want to say that I’m not stating ‘facts’, all I’m stating are things from my own point of view, much more like opinion. I’m not a super- being, I’m a human like most of you, and humans aren’t perfect, so I won’t mind debates at all :) Moreover, I could always use the knowledge of the more experienced NG users, feel free to post any of your personal and helpful advice in your reviews, or email me at Xenosteel@yahoo.com... I’ll be sure to credit you. Enjoy! - Xenosteel |

CHAPTER 1 Think "SERIOUS" |
Most of the people new to NG think of it as a place to share all sorts of flashes, and get great supportive feedback. A place full of flowers and love... |
Skip |
Hi! I'm new to Newgrounds and this is my first flash! I hope you guys like it!! |
Don’t get me wrong, NG users ARE nice! I first thought they weren’t, but they actually are! I’m serious! |
Skip |
Getting blammed is very normal, especially on first time flashes. Heck I got blammed myself, and I hated NG and everybody there very much, I thought of it as a place that existed only to discourage people new to flash development… Well, I was wrong. NG is a place which is more like a showroom, where your flash is presented against thousands of viewers. For every new submitted flash, there’s the “Judgment” thing, it’s when all the NG users vote for a score that decides if your movie is worthy or not. |
I’ll explain how to judge movies with the following example: Imagine you were a guy who has never been on a date for his whole life, and is probably desperate to try one. Suddenly, you met this cute girl at some coffee shop, had an interesting and funny chat with you, blah blah. Then you asked her for a date, she accepted! The question is, would you go to the date looking like the following? |
I Like Doonuts! ! :) |
I'm sure she'll like my awsome sexy clothes, because its my first date!! wohoo go me! I'm teh 1337 XD |
What are the chances that a guy like that will have a successful date? Heck, what are the chances that he would escape all the slaps awaiting him? Let’s be honest, people… |
Always think seriously about making your flashes, don’t make some low-effort badly designed piece of crap and submit it hoping that it’ll pass judgment… Before you submit anything, take a look at the NG flash portal. Check movies with a score of 3 or higher, then check movies with a score of 2 or lower… The scores of NG are not unfair, you might think that there are lots of movies that deserve a much higher score. But let’s be frank, if the movies that got 1.70 in score had 3.70 in score, then where would the movies that got 4.40 in score go? You would easily have maybe 100 movies all scored 5.00, how can you then tell which movie is better? |
You might think that NG users are harsh, but as I said before, they are actually nice people! Well there are asses of course, but you should know that getting blammed doesn't mean that you should never do flash, it means that you should try harder. If you think about it, NG users want you to become more serious, for your own good! Heck there are many who'll write reviews even for first time flashes so they could help you out in becoming a better flasher, isn't that nice? The main idea that I wanted to deliver here is: Always think and be serious about your flashes! It'll need lots of effort, but that's where all the fun actually is. |
If you REALLY want to think of your flash movie seriously, then think of it as a real movie shown in cinemas… Would you waste $4 to watch some crappy stick fight? Of course not! ”Time = Money”, think like that and you might understand and feel the seriousness I’m talking about. If you get blammed, show NG that you can do much better and make a seriously good flash next time to show them what you're made of :) |
Never feel sad about getting blammed, you’re never the only one that gets blammed, everybody gets blammed! First time flashers should think of it more like a “Welcome to NG” thing. Here’s something you see on a typical Sunday night that proves my point: |
CHAPTER 2 Plan your Movie |
A good movie is not just about intense action or neat graphics, it has to make sense!!! It’s also known as Concept: "A general plan for a publication, with attention given to the audience to be reached, the message or key information, the general look and feel..." I first used to think that storyboards and concept planning was just bullshit, I mean, why plan when I got a working mind that can actually 'think'? |
Storyboards make it much easier to construct the main idea of your movie, it might not seem significant, but a storyboard is VERY helpful! Mainly because it relieves the stress of keeping the idea of the movie in mind while working, even when doing very short and easy movies, a storyboard can never be a bad thing, and it’s never a waste of time to do one. I'll assume you already know what is a storyboard, so I won't provide any additional information in that field, if you need to know more, the internet has lots of information, go research! |
The more important thing is Concept, bluntly speaking, is to make sense in your movie. There are many flashes out there, even with superb graphics, sounds, etc... That don't even pass judgment, or end up being a turd of the week, just because there was no point in the flash to begin with! Making a concept is much simpler than it seems, try to think of delivering a message to the people, like "Speed kills" or "Ganondorf owns all" or "Sadness is what keeps me alive" and so... I won't say more, because really concept is that simple, saying more will only make it sound more complicated. |
Oh, and another thing, NEVER make the concept something in the lines of “Demonstrating my new found flashing skills”, that is a very common mistake. You should know that common NG users wouldn’t want to waste time over flash like that, obviously even you wouldn’t want to, so how do you think NG users would act towards such things? |
If you were making a game, then your main concept is to entertain! You have to think of the player who'll play the game, if he will actually enjoy it or not. Do NOT think of making a game as an achievement of your amazing game-making and actionscripting skills and forget about the actual entertainment part. |
About making a more advanced concept, I'll share these 2 tips I gained from my experience with concept designing: 1. Get into your movie! The more you imagine yourself being one inside the movie the better you'll construct it. I personally got praised from some really good reviewers for making a movie with a very human feeling to it, that's because I'm excellent in imagining myself being in another person's perspective, even if it was an imaginary character. That's one way to make your art unique, think about it... |
2. Having more than 1 concept or idea is always good, that way your movie will have more than just a single, linear meaning depending on the perspective of the viewer, movies of that type usually deserve appreciation and respect :) |
CHAPTER 3 Be Neat |
It’s always a good thing to make your flash feel ‘powerful’! Neatness is not extremely well done graphics; neatness is the way you present your movie, such as including backgrounds (even simple ones), having shadows, using the so-very-abused matrix slow motion effect, etc… I can’t really explain how to be ‘neat’ with just words, so to better show you the meaning of neatness, I’ll include a sample scene of someone trying to kill a sleeping guard to pass through to the next area: |
Here’s the first version of that sample scene, a typical thing that inexperienced flashers tend to do on their first try: |
Okay… that was pretty much extremely stupid, lol! Now watch as I use my magic wand to turn this into something a bit more exciting :) |
Yeah well, its not the best flash in the world, unfortunately I was rather short on time so I couldn’t spend more than two whole days making it, the blood effects are rather sad, the rest turned out kinda nice though. Actually, it’s something I’m a bit proud of :) Moreover, that wasn’t something done by a “magic wand” (even though I said that :P), this needed a much bigger effort than it seemed, literally hours of work. Notice that if I submit that piece to NG on its own, I’m sure it’ll barely pass judgment, or get a score between 1.20 and 1.70, nothing higher… Why is that? Well, I’m sure all of you know the answer :) Just think about it and try to recall what I said in earlier chapters. |
As you work on more flashes, you’ll gain experience, and then you can do the flashes that took 80 hours of work in 10 hours or less. The point is, try to always be as professional as possible, it might be slow and painful in the beginning, but it’ll be something to be proud of at least. |
I couldn’t keep my hands to myself, so I decided to make another ‘neat’ example :) I thought that one example wouldn’t be enough to deliver the message, and I really think it would help you guys to look at more examples so you gain creativity and hopefully develop your own unique style. Enjoy! |
I shall waft unnoticed |
With the wind |
I shall strike down my enemies |
Like the unmerciful tempest |
And it shall carry not a whisper of crimson |
The wind shall bend my blade to my will |
The goal behind those two examples was to show you how style affects the whole flash movie, they didn’t have the best graphics, but they had a nice vibe of ‘attitude’, if you know what I mean. Try to plan things of your own style, I’m sure that if everyone did that the NG staff will be having a hard time everyday on deciding which flashes should win the 5 daily awards :) |
CHAPTER 4 Increase the Pace |
“Time = Money” I’ve seen several flashes with a serious pace problem, and believe me, those are the kind of flashes that piss me off the most! When I find that flashes run too fu**ing slow, I immediately close and BLAM!! Why do I do that? WELL, let this example show you what I mean: |

Wow can't believe anyone would wait so long to read this... rofl |
I'm getting sick of this already, oh and if you were waiting for some sort of reward, err.. Congratulations for waiting :) |
Didn’t you press the lovely “Skip” button back there? Of course you did! And if you didn’t you’re probably wishing you did! Personally if I was someone sitting there I’d wish I had a gun so I could shoot myself… For flashes of that type, I wish that the NG tank would turn around and aim its cannon to give it one big BLAM!! RAWRRrrrrrrrr~… Never make an introduction very long and boring, always give a good start to your flash because there are many people who are sick from slow-paced introductions and will probably blam your flash before they even see 10 seconds of it, I know I would. If you really must include a long and boring introduction, be very sure to include the beloved “Skip” button!! Trust me, it makes all the difference. |
Another important thing about pace, change the frame rate of your movie to 30 FPS (frames per second), you can of course go higher than 30 FPS but most computers and human eyes won’t keep up with that speed, I won’t stop you if you chose to make your flash run in 60 FPS anyway. |
CHAPTER 5 Add Audio |
Sound, and especially Music, can change a flash from crappy to superb, or from superb to crappy… Having Music alone usually does the trick, personally if I was a lazy-butt and had to choose between doing sounds only and music only, I’d go for music. To really see the difference that audio can make, go and play any of the high ranking games or movies on NG with your speakers turned off, go try it! You can try even one of the examples included in this flash, you’ll immediately notice how audio can give a strong impression to the movie. |
Music has to be the flash’s best friend, NEVER EVER include music because you like it while it’s totally unsuitable for the flash! Angry music should go with angry flashes, soft and slow music should go with scenery flash, and so on… I don’t think you need help figuring out what music suits which flash. I personally think looking for the music before you begin your flash is always a better option, because as you listen to the music that you chosen, you might want to make changes to your flash (usually to make it better than the original idea). |
If you’re making an interactive flash (i.e. tutorial/game) then it’s always good to include buttons to turn off music, or even buttons to change the music (but include a music-off button with that too). Every user has their own taste in music, that’s why if you don’t include a music-off button it dramatically lowers the score of your flash. If you want to do your own voice acting in your flash, then all I can say is that you need lots and lots of confidence! Inviting your friends to listen to your voice acting helps a lot if you’re having difficulty. If you were in a hurry and couldn’t wait for your friends, then try to play some of your favorite songs and sign with them, it’ll help you warm-up your voice. |

CHAPTER 6 Use a Preloader |
You probably think that I could just mention that inside one of the previous chapters, but I made a chapter of its own for this because I can’t stress how important it is to have a Preloader for your flash movie! Having a Preloader won’t make your movie get a higher score, but not having one is going to cost you more than anything else! I don’t get why people are too lazy to include a Preloader, the NG Preloader is totally free and it’s very easy to include it! For the heck of it, I’m including a very simple step-by- step tutorial on how to use the NG Preloader: |
1. Get the Preloader, |
to download it |
2. Open the file you just downloaded (NewgroundsPreLoader.fla) 3. In the timeline, right-click on the first frame and select “Copy Frames” 4. In your flash movie, look at the top toolbar where there’s File – Edit – View etc… 5. Click Insert – Scene 6. In the timeline, right-click on the first frame and select “Paste Frames” 7. In your keyboard, press “Shift + F2” together to open the Scene window |
8. In the Scene window, find the scene that has the Preloader (usually named Scene 2) 9. Left-click and hold the mouse button it, and then drag it to the top of the Scene list 10. Test your movie by pressing “Ctrl + Enter” together on your keyboard Note: It’s recommended to add a black box in a layer behind the Preloader to act as a background because the NG Preloader’s loading bar is in white fill, optionally you can modify the color of the loading bar to something other than white. |
CHAPTER 7 Things to Avoid |
- Don’t do stickmen figures!!! I repeat, DO NOT DO STICKMEN FIGURES!!!!! Use box-men, circle-men, anything, but DON’T use STICK-men! It’s not because stick-men aren’t cool, it’s because you have no idea how stickmen are abused on NG. I’m not going to explain why, but it’s for your own good to avoid stickmen at all costs, don’t ask, just do it… |
- Don’t submit a flash to demonstrate your ultimate and unfathomable flashing skills, ESPECIALLY if you’re new to flash! If you want to demonstrate, include it in a complete flash movie that has audio and a story / concept. |
- Don’t use uncompressed audio! Always use compression, NG users hate waiting, especially if it was a 5 MB flash that was 10 seconds long… Of course, if compression somehow made things out-of-sync for you, then use uncompressed audio, however, your flash had better be good if you’re going to do that! |
- Don’t use the –z0r thing! The –z0r suffix has been abused beyond scope in the past years, I’m not sure if its abused in NG, but I’m sure that NOBODY wants to see the –z0r suffix ever again! The reason? Here’s a funny- but-not-funny little example to show you what I mean: |
Click-z0r |
Click-z0r? |
Click-z0r! |
Hey man! |
Hey man-z0r! |
Wazaaaaaaaaaaaap!!-z0r |
Nothin, was just browsing-z0r at NG-z0r trying to find some BLAM point-z0rz!!1 |

Thanx-z0rz!!! Its-z0r the-z0r new-z0r B-z0r M-z0r W-z0r!!1111!!1 |
You should-z0r make a flash-z0r about it-z0r and submit-z0r to NG-z0r !!11 |
Yeah-z0r!! I'm sure it'll PwN-z0R !! |
Yeah-z0r let-z0r's do-z0r it-z0r-z0r!!! Wo-z0r-hooo-z0r!!-z0r-z0r-z0r !!! |
z0000000000000r!!!!!11111-z0r! |
- Don’t import poor quality graphics! Flash is made with lots of drawing tools, use those whenever possible. Unless you want to import something complicated (e.g. a background). Even if you import a high resolution image, flash tends to screw it up… So its always better to draw in flash. |
CHAPTER 8 Tips and Tricks |
Xenosteel says: Rude users (asses) are everywhere, they love to write reviews like “Don’t do flash again” or “Your flash sucks…”, they’re usually unfair and like to write those reviews to _think_ they’re pissing off people. To counter that, just ignore them, believe me they’ll get furious :) especially when you got a flash that has, say, 30 reviews with 28 replies to all the fair reviews, leaving the unfair ones with no reply. |
There are users who are honest, you might stumble upon a user that gave you a zero in his review but has fairly explained the reasons. Personally I respect such users because they were honest, so don’t go off swearing at them because you should realize that they’re trying to help you, instead thank them and say that you’ll try harder to make better flashes in the future. |
How your flash movie starts can really affect its score, but what affects its score more is how it ends. Make sure you make decent endings to each of your flash movies, because people usually remember how the movie ended before they vote for it, in other words: “Crappy ending = Crappy score” |
Denvish says: "First-time flashers that got thier submissions blammed should check the reviews in the obituaries to pick up tips on where they went wrong..." |
Conclusion |
- More tips from NG users soon to come, write tips in your reviews or email me at Xenosteel@yahoo.com, you will be credited if I’ll include any words of your wisdom :) |
CONCLUSION |
I hope you guys enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. More importantly, I hope it was of any use to you in become a better flash artist! I'll be truly happy and relieved to hear if anybody learned anything useful from reading/watching this flash and its examples :) |
Sadly, I won't be doing much flash work for, about a year, because I have this kickass project I'm working on for my BSc certificate, it'll be a 3D action/RPG game. Inspired by the dreamcast game "Sword of the Berserker" and the anime series "Berserk", it'll have lots of blood and gore, the hero will have a big sword and will have rage skills, magic spells, charge-combo attacks, and much more! Its one helluva big project! |
Credits |
I have no idea why I'm writing all this, but anyway as soon as I'm done with the project I'm making a flash website for it and hosting the game for free download. I hope the NG staff won't mind if I post a small flash about the game's features and a link to download it, when the project is done that is... |
