Okay, let's begin. |
So, what is Flash? What can it do? |
Well, Macromedia Flash is a powerful |
program designed to create, animate, and |
publish the imagination. It's an |
extremely versatile program that can |
make detailed art and comic strips, |
amazing animations, intricate web |
components, exciting video games, |
and professional presentations. |
Tools, such as the Color Mixer, |
Smoothing Option, and Onion Skinning |
help to create great cartoons like this. |
With ActionScript, Flash's version |
of programming language, Flash |
games become complex, fun video |
games like this. |
And with Sound editing, music can be |
animated to an artist's interpretation |
of the song into a cool music video |
like this. |
All in all, Macromedia Flash |
is a tool to create any type |
of media you want. |
Knowing the tools in Flash, and |
having a little imagination, |
can open the way to |
unbelievable possibilities. |
Okay. |

Help |
- Flash's help section; it's helpful, though at times confusing - Very useful when it comes to looking up unfamiliar tool functions and properties, especially those that are advanced - I don't recommend trying to learn Flash just by using the Help section; let's put it that way! |
- Edits the color scheme of most objects on the Stage - Can add a solid, gradient, or bitmap (image) fill - Scroll over sections of this panel to learn more |
Same functions as on the toolbar; shows if fill is applied to stroke or fill |
Determines levels of red, green, and blue in the fill; Alpha shows level of transparency (yes you can make transparent fills) |
Determines type of fill (Solid, Linear, Radial, Bitmap) |
Shows numeric value of the selected color; can also change the brightness of the color |
Shows colors that are added into the gradient; you can add up to 16 different colors in the gradient |
Shows what the current gradient (color scheme) will look like |
Displays preset and custom-made color schemes |
Determines the limit of the gradient filling the object |
Extend |
Reflect |
Repeat |
Color Mixer |
Library |
- Shows the collection of all objects imported in the document - These include sound files, bitmaps (images), movie files and symbols - Symbols (explored in depth later) are basically physical collections of stuff on the Stage that Flash can recognize as one unit |
Behaviors |
- This attaches premade AS codes to certain symbols and/or frames - Try poking around the different functions to see what they do - This tutorial only shows the Go to Web Page behavior in the Web section, since it's really the only relative one |
The Timeline |
- Organization of all animation into a sequence of frames that plays at a certain frame rate (edited in Stage Properties) - Scroll over this image to see certain aspects of the Timeline; anything else is self-explanatory |
- Frames represent a single instance of your animation |
Keyframes are the defining frames in your layers; they will determine what following frames will show |
This is just a regular frame; the keyframe defines what shows up in this frame |
Blank keyframes basically create blank frames for a layer; used to clear layers for future keyframes in the animation |
This green frame shows the presence of a shape tween, explained in the next section |
This purple frame shows the presence of a motion tween, explained in the next section |
- If you notice, there is a red marker line that shows what frame you are working on - This button centers this line, and the frames on it, in the center of your timeline window |
- These buttons let you jump to a particular thing so you can separately work on it - The left button jumps between scenes (explained later) - The right button jumps between individual symbols in your library |
- These are the Onion Skinning Buttons; Onion Skinning allows you to see previous/future frames on one frame |
Turns onion skinning on/off |
Shows the previous/future frames as outlines |
Allows you to edit the previous/future frames that are shown |
Edits how the onion skin markers are set or shown; can set a certain numbers of frames to show |
- Determines the state of the layer |
Show/Hide Layers (shows/hides all of the stuff on the layer) |
Lock/Unlock Layers (locking: you can't work on that layer) |
Show Layers as Outlines (everything appears as outlines) |
- Layers organize the sequence of frames into sections -Their order determines if the stuff on the layer appears in front or in back of other layers - Right-click one to see what you can do to it (i.e. Motion Guide, Mask, Add/Delete Layer) |
What is Tweening? |
Types of Tweening |
Shape Tween |
This transforms lines and fill objects into different forms; can also move the object |
Motion Tween |
This involves the movement of symbols; can move in a straight or curved path |
How to do a Motion Tween |
First, click your Circle Tool and draw a circle (click a space on the Stage and drag until you have the shape you want) |
Now, right click it and choose "Convert to Symbol..." This will turn your circle into a symbol. |
You'll see this window come up. Name it what you will and select "Graphic", and then click OK after that |
This just puts the center of rotation of your object in the corners, sides, or center (free transform) |
Alright, now go to your timeline. Your symbol is now on a keyframe in frame 1. Go to frame 20 of that layer, right-click it, and select "Insert Keyframe". (F6) |
Your circle is now in this one too. Select the circle and move it to where you want your circle to move. |
Now, go back to frame 1 on your layer, right-click it, and select "Create Motion Tween". The frames in between the two keyframes should turn purple, and an arrow will appear between them |
That's it! Play your movie using the Play feature in the Control menu (Top) or pressing Enter. |
Things to Know about Motion Tweens |
Adding a Motion Guide |
Okay, on the layer that you made your tween, right-click it and select "Add Motion Guide" from the menu. A new layer will appear. |
On this new layer, draw your desired path for your symbol. It can be any shape, but its starting and ending points cannot connect, otherwise, it will not move |
Good path |
Bad path |
Now, go to frame 1 of your tween, and make sure that the symbol's center is attached to the tip of where it's supposed to start. Do the same for the symbol on the ending keyframe, but put it on the end location on the path. |
Frame 1 |
Frame 20 |
Go ahead and play the animation (remember, hit Enter to play). If you did it correctly, the symbol will move along the path you made |
How to do a Shape Tween |
On a new layer, draw another circle, but do not make it into a symbol. (You can also clear your existing layer if you want, and make a new keyframe.) |
To make a new layer: Right-click a layer and select "Insert Layer" |
Go to frame 20, add a new keyframe (F6), and draw a square using the Rectangle tool. (Use the "perfect circle" technique described in the Basics to draw a square.) |
Go back to frame 1, and go to the Properties panel. Go to where it says "Tween" and select "Shape". Now the frames in between should turn green with an arrow through them. |
There you go! Your circle will now transform into a square. |
Things to Know about Shape Tweens |
Adding Shape Hints |
Sometimes, the shape doesn't transform correctly. This is where shape hints come in. Shape hints tell the program which part of the previous form transforms into the part of the following form. (i.e. we want this to pivot instead of flip.) |
Go to the first keyframe, and from the Modify menu (top), click Shape, and select "Add Shape Hint" (Ctrl+Shift+H). A little red circle with an "a" will appear. Do this again, since we'll need two hints. |
Place the "b" hint on the top of the line, and the "a" hint on the bottom line |
In the last frame, where you have the different shape, you'll see two hints as well. Place the hints in the same place as in the previous frame. |
That should do it. Play the animation, and make sure it looks like this. |
Note: If the hints were placed correctly, the ones in the beginning frame will turn yellow, and the ones in the ending frame will turn green. If they are still red, then that means there is a problem with where you put them. |
If you noticed from the title animation, masking involves using one shape to reveal parts of another. It has numerous uses, and it can prove to be a very cool effect. |
First, make two new layers. On the bottom one, draw a big red rectangle, and on the top one, draw a tiny blue circle. |
Now, right click the top layer and select "Mask". The circle now appears as a cutout of the bottom layer. (Keep in mind that the layers automatically lock once you mask it, so be sure to unlock them.) |
Now that you unlocked the layers, throw some shape tweens in the masking layer to move your circle around and reveal parts of the rectangle. Then play it to see the effect. (Make sure the bottom layer is locked in order to see the effect.) |
Movieclips vs. Graphics |
- Movieclips can have movies inside themselves (i.e. a movieclip within a movieclip within the main timeline) - Movieclips can have AS attached to it - Most preferable symbol type |
- Graphics are great for organizing a number of static images in one unit - Cannot contain separate animation nor have AS attached - Use for static images and text tweening (motion) |
- Scenes organize your series of frames and layers into sequential sections |
- Can be manipulated with AS to create a Scene Select option in a movie |
- Makes it easier on the user when creating a movie with several background changes |
- In the top right corner of the timeline, you'll see the Edit Scene button - Clicking it will bring up the list of scenes in you animation; clicking a scene will access that scene - Yes, that would be the list for this tutorial! |
The menu is pretty much self-explanatory. Double-clicking a scene will allow you to change it name. Move them around to change the order in which they play. |
What are Buttons? |
Click it! |
Creating a Button |
First, draw a circle, doing the same as you did in the other sections. |
Now, right click it and choose "Convert to Symbol...". |
You'll see this window come up. This time, select the Button option, press OK, and then double-click your new symbol. |
You'll see a new timeline appear. Scroll over these four frames for explanations. |
The "Up" frame shows what the button will look like when nothing is happening to it; it is unpressed |
The "Over" frame shows what the button will look like when the mouse is over the button |
The "Down" frame shows what the button will look like when it is pressed |
The "Hit" frame shows the clickable area of you button; it can be bigger or smaller than the actual button itself |
Let's put some key frames in there. Scroll over the circle to see a visual example. |
Let's try to animate the button. Take a movieclip and stick it in the over or down frame (these are the most popular frames to put animations in). Ex. I'll put a shape tween in the over frame. |
That's it! Scroll over the button to see the effects. |
Some Useful AS Code for Buttons |
On () : This code is necessary for your button to perform action. The code you put inside the parentheses is a condition, and then an action will take place. So the format will look like this: |
<p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="35" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">on (<i>condition</i>) {</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="35" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"> <i>function</i> ;</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="35" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">}</font></p> |
Some conditions to use: release: As soon as the mouse releases the button press: As soon as the mouse presses the button rollOver: When the mouse rolls over the button rollOut: When the mouse rolls out of the hit area dragOver: When the mouse clicks and drags over the button dragOut: When the mouse clicks and drags outside the hit area |
Some functions to use: play (); : Plays the animation from that location stop (); : Stops the animation at that location gotoAndPlay ("Scene name", "Frame name or number"); : Plays from a certain frame, or jumps to another scene and plays animation from that frame; often used for replay buttons and skip buttons gotoAndStop (); : Same as gotoAndPlay, same format, but stops instead of plays |
Using Sound |
- Flash makes it easy to use sound in animations - Simplistic drag-and-drop method - To use a sound, import it to the library (File > Import > Import to Library ...) - Then, go to the library, find the sound, and drag it onto the stage |
Sound on the Timeline |
- A sound in an animation is invisible on the Stage, but visible in the timeline - It is highly suggested to always make a separate layer for sounds - Easier to manage that way |
Sound Properties |
- This is where you can access all of the sounds imported to your library - Instead of drag-and- drop, you can click on a keyframe and input a sound in this manner |
- Sync determines how the sound is played in the animation - Event plays the sound independent of the movie (if the animation is paused manually, the sound will still play) - Stream attaches the sound frame by frame, so it "streams" the sound through the movie (most preferable) |
- This is where you can edit how your sound is played in the animation - You can change its starting and ending points, its volume in each speaker, and how it fades throughout the animation |
Editing Sound Effects |
- Changes effects of the sound - Loads a list of pre-made effects for your sound - Ex. Fade In, Fade Out |
- Shows the progression of the sound in its entirety - The top is the left speaker, the bottom is the right speaker |
This gray bar shows where the sound starts and ends; there are two on each side of the timeline; can be used to "trim" sound |
This white square is an envelope handle; these change the volume of the sound at where they are located |
From left to right: - Stop/Play: These are used to test your effects - Zoom In/Out: Shows the timeline enlarged or reduced - Seconds/Frames: Shows the timeline in units of seconds or frames |
Using Envelope Handles |
Placing the handle higher up increases the volume |
Placing the handle farther down decreases the volume |
Click on this line to add handles (maximum of eight handles) |
The length and steepness of the line between handles changes how gradual and how volume-changing the effect is |
Using the Color Mixer |
- When you use gradients, it's important to know how to use the color bar - To add colors, just click on the bar - To change the color you add, double-click it and select a color |
These two colors (starts as black and white) are there to start. Add more by clicking the bar. |
Gradients |
There are two types |
Using the Fill Transform tool, you can edit the look of a radial fill |
This center circle positions the fill; the arrow on top shifts the fill a distance away from the center |
This square stretches the fill to make it either a wide horizontal ellipse or a skinny vertical ellipse |
This circle scales the fill to either enlarge it or reduce it |
This circle rotates the fill to a certain position |
The Fill Transform Tool can also change linear fills |
This center circle positions the fill |
This square stretches the fill |
First Trick: Moving Shine |
1 |
First, draw a circle, and apply a radial fill that fades to white in the center, like so. White works best for moving shine. |
2 |
Hopefully you're on a fresh layer. Make a keyframe on frame 20, then use the Fill Transform tool to move the gradient like so. |
Frame 1 |
Frame 20 |
3 |
Go back to your first frame and throw in a shape tween. Hit Play and check that the tween looks like this. |
4 |
If you want to get creative, you can throw in some more shape tweens by tweening from one keyframe to the next, and creating a more animated shine |
Second Trick: The Fade |
Like always, we draw our circle on a new layer in frame 1, and make a keyframe in frame 20 |
On frame 20, select your circle. Go to the Color Mixer and set the Alpha to 0%. Your circle will disappear. (If the circle has an outline, be sure to select it separately and set its Alpha to 0%) |
Go back to your first frame and throw in a shape tween. Hit Play and your circle will fade out. This technique can be used to make fade ins / fade outs for your movies. |
Symbols can also fade too. For example, all of these fading titles are symbol fades. Say you put a symbol under a motion tween and you want it to fade in. Select the symbol in the first keyframe, then go to the Properties panel, and set the Color to Alpha, and then to 0%. The Color option will be located on the right side of the panel. |
What is a Preloader? |
- You've probably seen preloaders before in video games and web sites |
- Preloaders show the user how much of the movie has loaded on the computer, since the movie loads from an external source |
- It's not exactly functional, but it allows the user to see the loading progress |
Making a Simple Preloader |
Alright, here goes. First off, you need to have the following setup as shown. Don't worry about filling the keyframes, just put them where they need to be. |
First thing you need to do is create a black rectangle in Content frame 1. It should look like this in a standard size Stage. (The thing above it is a text field; I'll explain later.) |
Now, make this rectangle into a movieclip, then make sure it's selected. Go to the Properties panel, and give this movieclip the instance name "loadbar". |
In this same frame, draw a text field with the Text tool over your rectangle, but don't write anything in it. Instead, make your Properties panel look like this (Be sure to scroll over this panel): |
This changes the type of text. Static text does nothing, while Dynamic text can constantly update and change, and Input text can allow the use to input text into the flash file |
This is where you give the whole text field a name that AS will recognize in a code. Any time you specify "myfield" in AS, it will look for this text field to perform the action. |
This gives the contents of the text field a variable name. This way, AS can assign a value to that variable, which works perfectly with ever- changing Dynamic text. |
Now, time for some AS. Go to to your first keyframe in your Actions layer, and copy this code into the Actions input panel (Oh, and be sure to give this frame the label "loadFrame"): |
<p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">myfield.autoSize = true;</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">var percent = (_root.getBytesLoaded()/_root.getBytesTotal())*100;</font></p> |
The first line first specifies our text field, then applies the function autoSize to it, which will edit the size of the field as the text inside it grows. The "= true" part just tells the autoSize function that, yes, it is changing the size. As for the second line, the var command creates the variable "percent" inside of AS to be used by future code. It is assigned ("=" means assigned, not equals) the value of however many bytes of the whole movie has loaded so far ("_root" specifies the main timeline, and "getBytesLoaded()" is a function that states the loaded bytes), divided by the total number of bytes in the movie, multiplied by 100 (makes sense, since the variable is called "percent", no?) |
Once you have done that, go to your next keyframe, same layer, and copy this code into the Actions input panel: |
<p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">if (percent == 100) {</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">play();</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">} else {</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">loadbar._xscale = percent;</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">amountloaded = Math.floor(percent)+"% loaded";</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">gotoAndPlay("loadFrame");</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">}</font></p> |
Let me translate this into English: "If the 'percent' variable's value is equal to 100, then play the animation. If not, then change the x dimension of the symbol 'loadbar' to the value of 'percent', let the text field state the rounded-down value of 'percent', along with the text '% loaded', and then go back to the first frame (called loadFrame) and play the animation." |
: ) Don't worry if you don't quite understand the explanation; it's complex code for those just starting. Now, for the last Action keyframe, just put a "stop();" statement in the Action input panel. Then, on the Content keyframe right below it, make a button, and input this code for the button: |
<p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">on (release) {</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"> _root.play();</font></p><p align="left"><font face="Courier New" size="20" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1">}</font></p> |
You now have a play button! |
Testing Your Preloader: 1. Make another scene, and throw some high-kb content in it, like images (File > Import > Import to Library ... to import content, in case you forgot) 2. Hit Ctrl+Enter to play the movie in Flash Player 3. Go to View > Simulate Download (Ctrl+Enter) 4. Right below Simulate Download, you can set the Download Setting to test the download under a certain bit rate. |
Things to Remember: - This scene that has the preloader should be labeled accordingly, and should be the first scene in your animation - Use the preloader for movies over 100kb - Yes, this is a very basic preloader; most are more complex! |
Web Content |
During your time in the Engineering Program, you will be required to make websites for your projects. In this section, I'll show you how to make the following web content in Flash: - A splash page - A navigation bar - A marquee |
Making a Splash Page |
- The splash page should be a short intro movie to your website, roughly 30-45 seconds in length (I suggest 30) - First scene will be the preloader if the whole movie is over 100kb; if not, then it should be all one scene - When people enter your site, this should be the first page they see; the movie will lead to the main site - Both FrontPage and Dreamweaver can import Flash movies onto pages, so it's your program preference |
What to Put in the Intro |
- It really depends on your site; let your creativity guide you - Your intro should have at least three layers: one for actions, one for your buttons, and one for the content - At the end, make sure to put a "stop();" command on the last frame, and stick two buttons on the Buttons layer - One should be a replay button to replay the intro movie - The other will be an "Enter Site" button, which will utilize the Behaviors panel (explained later in making navigation) |
Navigation Bars |
- Navigation bars, or simply called "nav bars", are the series of buttons that direct the user around the website - Flash allows you to create cool buttons for nav bars by providing the means to animate them and do cool effects - As far as making cool buttons, it depends on how creative you get, and how well you use the skills you learned - You'll make a series of buttons that will link to the pages of your website using the Behaviors panel |
Behavior: Go to Web Page |
This is pretty simple if you understand well how buttons work. First, make your button however you like. Then, access the Behaviors panel under Window (Shift+F3). Now, make sure your button is selected, and add the following behavior. |
You'll see this window come up. Scroll over this to find out what's to know about this window. |
This is where you put the URL of the webpage that you want this button to take the user. Remember, the URL is the web address of the page, which appears in the address bar. (Note: when you use this to make an Enter Site button in the splash page, make sure that it links to your home page.) |
This establishes how the web page is opened once you activate the behavior. For your purposes, you will use the "_self" option, since you want the link to open in the same window. If you really want to find out what the other options are, type them into the Help section, but trust me, this is all you'll need. |
- Once you have yourself a nice arrangement of buttons, be sure to edit your Stage size accordingly, meaning that the Stage should encase your buttons vertically or horizontally - You can guess and check when you bring the nav bar into you web maker - The nav bar should fit in the opening window; you shouldn't have to scroll down to see the whole thing |
The Marquee |
- Marquees are banners of scrolling text that can display messages to the user, company slogans, etc. - Making a Flash marquee is very simple; all you do is use a few motion tweens to fade text in and out of a very thin horizontal Stage - 150 X 700 pixels should be a good Stage dimension, but the width really depends on your site - Be sure that when you tween the text, all of your text fields are symbols; otherwise, Flash will automatically create symbols, and that really messes up your library |

Making a Presentation |
- If you haven't noticed already, every section in this tutorial is a mini-presentation; the format is the same for all - In this section, I'll give you a few guidelines on how you can setup your presentations - Remember, Flash is a method of applying creativity; feel free to use that to your advantage, since it gives more freedom in title / content effects and cool backgrounds than PowerPoint |
The Setup |
- Basically, the format is a one- scene, five-layer movie (you won't need a preloader, unless you're loading your presentation in class from an external source) - The five layers: Actions, Buttons, Title, Content, and Background (you can also add a motion guide to the Title layer) |
The Timeline |
As an example, here's a piece of the timeline for this section. Scroll over for some tips |
This would represent a "slide" if you want to think in terms of PowerPoint. Each section has a new title keyframe, a new content keyframe, a new frame label (which is what you see on the Actions layer), and, at the end, a new button keyframe thay indicates the end of the "slide". The frame label allows your back button to go directly back to that "slide" with the gotoAndPlay() function. |
Most of the AS that you will use on your Actions layer will be stop() commands, applied on a keyframe located at the end of the "slide", as you can see. If you decide to play a movieclip at the end of your "slide", add the movieclip.play() function, where "movieclip" represents the instance name of your movieclip, not the regular name. To label your beginning keyframe, select the frame and go to the Properties panel; you'll see a text box where you can input a label. |
Your Buttons layer will contain two buttons on a keyframe at the end of each "slide". One will be a play button that will allow the presentation to progress to the next "slide". Just use the play() function on this button. The other will be a back button, should you need to jump back a "slide". This will involve the gotoAndPlay() function, where you put the name of the frame, in quotes, inside the parentheses. Just be sure that the frame you want it to jump to is labeled. |
This is where you can put a motion guide for your titles. Get creative as possible, for this ability gives you more freedom in title effects than PowerPoint. If you don't want to add one, you don't have to. |
This layer is where you'll put your "slide" titles. You'll probably want to motion tween these in your presentation. In this case, make all of your titles into symbols, so that you can apply motion tweens. Whether you make them movieclips or graphics is up to you, but go by this: If you're not going to animate the title in itself, just make it a graphic; otherwise, make it a movieclip. |
This is where you'll put any notes or pictures for your "slides". Notice that it starts after the title animation; this is what you want to aim for. You want to group all the text and pictures as one symbol, and then follow the rules explained with titles to determine what type of symbol to make it as. |
This is where you can let your creativity run wild in creating a really cool background. What you want to do is start with a rectangular fill object that is the size of your stage. Then, add any kinds of shapes or animated objects that you want. Be warned; animated things in the background tend to distract the audience. Once you create your background, lock this layer, so that you won't affect anything on it when you work on your other layers. |
Organization |
- Any time you make Flash movies, make sure to label and use many layers for organization (i.e. putting sounds and music on separate layers, and using one layer solely for AS) - If you have a lot of symbols in your movie, consider grouping them into folders (there's a button on the bottom of the Library to create folders) - Use a movieclip to clear up cluttered layers; be sure to use the power of movieclips within movieclips to give things more flexibility (i.e. making a shape tween follow a guide) |
Finishing Clean |
- Put a blank keyframe right at the end of layers that do not show anything for the rest of the animation (this helps if you want to transfer your animation to a collection of animation) |
- Also, be sure that your movieclips, if you want them to play only once, have a stop() command at the end of its animation; otherwise, it'll keep looping |
Publishing |
- Any time you test your movie (Crtl+Enter), you automatically publish your flash movie into an .swf file - If you want to publish your movie in another format, go to File > Publish Settings ... , then select Publish - Published content will be saved whereever your document is - You can also export you movie by selecting File > Export - Exporting gives you more options (i.e. save to a different folder, setting the dpi of a JPEG should you export the image of one frame in your movie) |
When to Use Symbols Types |
- Use movieclips as much as possible! - Reason: Since movieclips are the only ones that can have AS applied to it, you may never know if you need to apply AS to your symbol - Only use graphics if you know for sure that you will not apply AS or animate it - For example, if you were to simply motion tween a group of text, you can group them as a graphic |
Instances |
- Instances refer to every time you use a particular symbol - They have the same properties as the symbol itself, but it can have different AS applied to it - Example: These buttons that allow you to move between "slides" are everywhere in this tutorial, but they are all instances of only two symbols; saves you from making an entirely new symbol just to have different AS applied to it - Just remember that editing anything inside a symbol will affect every instance of it in your movie |
Some Advice on Frame Rate |
- Your standard frame rate is 12 fps (frames per second), but this is WAY too slow for anything useful - Frame rate correlates to smoothness of the animation - Professional frame rate: 25-30 fps - This tutorial: 26 fps - Some animators use a lower frame rate for frame-by-frame animation, so that they don't have to draw as many frames - Animators' frame rate: 14-19 fps |
And Finally ... Shortcuts |
- Shortcuts are very useful when you want to save time - To edit keyboard shortcuts at any time, got to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts ... - You can either look up the current shortcut for that option, change the shortcut to whatever you want, or give a shortcut to something that doesn't have one - Know your shortcuts, because they are extremely quick and helpful |
Title Appears Here |
Text will appear hear |
Images will appear hear |
- Most of the sections are in a PowerPoint-like format - Each section has "slides" - Be sure to scroll over every image for pop-up information - Click the right button to move forward, and the left button to jump back a "slide" - Make sure to check for smaller arrows by the images, since they play more content, like a subsection |
