Whistles: |
Here's what to do: 1. Go to a crappy flash that's famous (examples: Retarded Chinese Babies, B, some junk on the front page) REMEMBER: Pick controversial topics! Just a bad phrasing or a bad message will not be removed, and you WILL get NEGATIVE whistle points! Don't flag randomly! 2. Mark all reviews that are against the Portal rules as "abusive". Read them before marking or else you will make mistakes and lose points. 3. Score has a high correlation (relation) with the quality of the review; however, it is not 100%. Therefore, some 0 reviews ARE good. |

Mainly covered by the FAQ. The rate in which your b/p points increase is controlled by your time on NG and your skills at b/p-ing (which I will instruct soon enough). They’re the number of your correctly-decided votes for under- judgment flashes here at NG. Once you reach “Elite Guard Sergeant” the difference between the levels will be 1000 and greater so it’ll take much longer to advance into the higher levels. |
Blam/Protects: |
Experience: A measurement of your time on NG, based on daily deposits. It’s basically impossible to hack, so don’t. The levels go from 1-30, and the voting power goes up about 0.5 each time. VP goes up gradually, so there’s not much of a jump in voting power. After reaching level 9, the difference becomes over 1500 and it’ll take a long time to advance level after that. Want a list? Underdog of the Week |
Underdog of the Week |
Turd of the Week |
Turd of the Week |
Weekly User's Choice: Definition: Highest score at the end of the week Catches: None. This is basically the best award a flash can get. The flash that got this award is basically like the flash that won an "election". Likewise, this award is usually unbiased, so there are little catches. This is because it is almost always under the top 5 of one select day, and all daily awards tend to be voted on more than 1000 times, especially the high-scoring ones. |
Daily Awards: Definition: The top 5 scored flashes at the end of every day. Catches: None. These prestigious awards are given to the highest- scoring 5 flashes out of judgment during that day's 24 hours. The top 3 places in this category count towards your score to becoming "King of the Portal" during that month: 1st place earns you 3 points, 2nd earns 2, and 3rd earns 1. The highest scorer becomes the "King of the Portal". |
Review Crew Pick: Definition: Highest review score at the end of the week Catches: 30 reviews MINIMUM WARNING: To inexperienced people (and people who haven’t tried for this): You will NEED a minimum of 30 reviews. This means that: 1.Cheating by friends will be hard (but not impossible). 2.It’s possible if you’re in some sort of crew. 3.You need a pretty strong base of 8.5-10 for a start. Review crew picks are often over a 9.55, and it’s hard to double- check a victory due to the fact that you can’t see review scores in the portal listings. |
Underdog of the week (positive or negative): Definition: Biggest differential (vote score – review score) Catches: 30 reviews MINIMUM Similar to Review Crew, this needs 30 reviews (look at RC guides for ideas). The biggest difference is that this is not that prestegious of an award; hence not many reviews will come in. Therefore, about 33-50% of the time, the differential is about a 2-3. However, on other weeks where there’s a killer submission or a “crew” submission, the differential can go up to around a 5. |
Turd of the week: Definition: Lowest score at the end of the week. Catches: NO EDITING. I myself have fallen for this catch. Remember, IT’S NOT WORTH IT. If it’s scoring low enough or you don’t think it will pass judgment in its current state, and you want the TOTW, DON’T EDIT IT. The competition isn’t that strong, and about 5 friends with a VP (voting power) of 6 can bring down a submission about 0.2 points in one week (before awards). |
Do this for 2 hours for 15 days: BRONZE at day 2. SILVER at day 4. GOLD at day 6-7. DEITY at about day 13-15. |
Once you have the gold whistle, it will become hard to find crappy reviews. Therefore, going from "gold" to "deity" will be the hardest step in whistling. |

Question 1: Score: 10 Review: THIS IS SOME GOOD SHIT!!!! |
That is the correct answer. This violates the portal rules, because it is all in capital letters. |
Continue |

That is not the correct answer. This review is clearly filled with capital letters, and that is against a portal rule. Next time you see one of these, mark it as abusive. |
Question 2: Score: 2 Review: Get eat shit, [author's name] |
That is the correct answer. This violates the portal rules, because it offends the author. |
That is not the correct answer. This review directly puts an offense to the author, and is definitely abusive. |
Question 3: Score: 1 Review: I see a lot of problems in this flash. |
That is not the correct answer. The reviewer did not break any portal rules. |
That is the correct answer. The reviewer did not break any portal rules. |
Question 4: Score: 6 Review: This got a higher score than it should have. |
That is the correct answer. This violates the portal rules, because it indirectly says that the flash "sucks". One of my reviews was deleted exactly written like this. |

Question 6: Score: 10 Review: W00TZ041424!!!!! |
That is not the correct answer. Marking this as abusive is a waste of time, mostly because the mods seem to ignore requests like this. Don't mark reviews like this, even if your heart says so. |

Congratulations! You finished the quiz. Now, you're ready to go out to the NG wilderness and claim yourself a nice, shiny, deity whistle. |
There are 150-200 flashes into the portal every single day. Logically, you can easily catch 100 of them every day with only spending about 10-15 min. At that rate, you can become an Elite Guard Sergeant in 1 month projected time. |
Once you become a sergeant, you will probably be in the top 1000 B/P'ers. Therefore, after that, your rank will be rather stable. |

Question 3: Size: 500 KB Description: Something that I submitted about a squirrel. |
There are no right or wrong answer on this one; the score is indecisive. Think before you vote on something like this. |
Question 4: Size: 1000 KB Description: A shit flash that says Ep. 3, and Eps 1 and 2 are protected. |
That is the correct answer. Because the past episodes are protected, it guarantees the protection of this new one. Also, the file size leaves not much room for fatal (mistakes) errors in submission. |

Question 5: Size: 50 KB Description: Something 2 seconds long by Cellphone-Lock. |
That is not the correct answer. Something only 2 seconds long will get blammed regardless of the author. Too many usual 5-voters will turn it down, causing a blam. |

Daily awards: Something that will score high when coming out of judgment. Looking for: 1.High quality 2.Appealing 3.Medium file size 4.Not lacking in music, sound, or voice if needed. 5.No bugs (unless it’s insignificant) |
Weekly User’s Choice (and weekly placement): Something that will endure about 1000-2000 votes. Looking for: 1.High quality 2.Replay value 3.Depth of graphics/plot 4.Not lacking in music, sound, or voice if needed. 5.No bugs, period. |
Weekly User's Choice/Weekly top 5 |
Review Crew Pick: Something that will make people fall in love with it. Looking for: 1.Extreme depth in morals/plot/quality 2.Something that will either a.Endure a lot of reviews b.Be given a few 10’s and then forgotten 3.Hilarious in a good, original way (without the flash being stupid) 4.Something that will NOT offend anyone |
(Negative) Underdog of the Week: Something that has a thin shell and a deep core. (review > vote) Looking for: 1.Something that is crappy at first sight but deep once you look into it 2.Something that is disturbing the general population, but will spark good reviewers 3.Something that ensures all bad reviews are terminated (violations), so only the good ones are left 4.Something that will not offend anyone. |
(Negative) Underdog of the Week |
(Positive) Underdog of the Week: Something that is good, but offends everyone. (review < vote) Looking for: 1.Something that is pretty good but is against a lot of basic morals. 2.Something that attacks a popular figure properly (with convincing evidence) 3.Something that a lot of individuals find offensive but funny to almost all of the population. |
(Positive) Underdog of the Week |
Turd of the Week: A piece of crap that can pass judgment. Looking for: 1.Something retardedly hilarious, and is pure crap. 2.Something straight out of a crew. 3.A half-decent first. 4.Pure crap with hidden support (make sure not to over-vote!) |
Things to protect (Vote 5 to maximize chance of protection): 1.Flashes from major authors (includes bad ones too). 2.Flashes from a “crew” (CC, SS, and other existing), made by a member. 3.Anything with a decent plot that is over 30 seconds. 4.Something that is so retarded, it’s hilarious (these somehow always pass). NOTE: If you voted 5 and it got an undeserving high score, give it low points the NEXT day. Make sure you get the protection point first. Things to blam (Vote 0 to maximize chance of blam): 1.Crap (unless it’s in a category above) 2.Something that’s under 15 seconds, unless by a crew 3.Something under 5 seconds (almost no exceptions) 4.Flash with “person's first” in description that’s below average quality. 5.Flash with a description about not blamming it (unless it’s plainly good) 6.Resubmissions... UNLESS it clearly states that major improvements were made in the author's notes. |
Blow the whistle: 1.Stuff that is offensive to the author, some other reviewer, etc. 2.MOST OR ALL CAPITALIZED. 3.A review that says the flash sucks, even if it is gentle. Don’t blow the whistle: 1.Stuff that says improvements with criticism. 2.Short reviews (they didn’t REALLY break any rules) 3.Useless reviews (just leave them alone) 4.LONG reviews, even if it has some MILD offenses. Whistles have one purpose: to "tattle" on troublemakers. This can be done in two ways: by reporting stolen/malicious flash and by calling a review abusive. Even though this sounds childish, having a good whistle comes in handy when someone gives you a useless review with a low score; you can have the mods remove it and M-Bot will be sending him/her with a warning PM. If it is bad enough, he/she will get BANNED! |
2. Press "Rating" |
3. Voila! You can now see the BLAM threshold. |
With this, you can autimatically know what to protect and what to BLAM if you haven't already. However, keep in mind that this is not workable at any given time. It must be about 12-3AM ET, so it strongly favors west coast NGers. If you are aiming at Turd of the Week, you can purposely submit late, vote 5, and then procceed to know what to vote the second time (if it's high, vote 0). Also, it's handy if you don't want to over- vote on a submission. |
YOU FOUND AN EASTER EGG! OK, this one is probably the more important one to keep in mind. __--Proxies 101--__ Remember, after you and all your friends vote on a submission, it's not over yet. By the time you do that (by my experience) there should be another solid 2 hours of others voting for it until your beloved submission comes out to the portal. Do you feel helpless as you sit there praying that your score is higher than a 3? 3.5? Maybe even a ... 4? Well, that's not what you should be doing. You should be VOTING. |
__--Proxies 101--__ Continued... OK, you should just about all heard about the coveted "Proxy". A proxy is a site where it lets you go to other sites under that site's name. In other words, every working proxy is an extra vote to your submission. BUT! Remember! THE INTERNET IS A DANGEROUS AND DECEPTIVE PLACE! Check these conditions before you use ANY proxy! |
__--Proxies 101--__ Continued... Conditions for using a proxy: 1. Safety Check if the proxy has viruses, obscene amounts of pop-ups, etc. 2. Flash capabilities Check if the proxy is flash equipped. 3. Send-equipped Check if the proxy allows you to send ANYTHING. 4. IP-equipped If the proxy does not have its own IP, it CAN'T VOTE. If all 4 of these conditions are met, fell free to use that proxy! NOTE: Tom and Co. is cracking down on crap like this. Use with extreme caution.(No doubt that Tom will kill me when he sees this) |

You are an honest and fair grader. Welcome comrade, to the side of duty and servitude! Congratulations on making here, I’ll now try my best to give you a few pointers and descriptions on what to vote what. |
Results: |
You are a speedy voter or a stat-whore. So, you’ve ended up here, eh, Mr. Evil? Well, have I got the guide for you. Once you finish reading my guide you’ll be getting 100 blam/protects points per day using only about 30 - 45 minutes. |
Once you finish watching a flash, think about what to vote long and hard. No need to rush unless it’s time to sleep; it’s not like NG will die in 15 seconds. Now, I will try to communicate what flashes deserve what type of score. |
How to vote: |
0’s: This is the score that most crap movies deserve. If you closed a flash in pure disgust or boredom, this is the ideal score to give them. However, this is not the score you want to give something that at least looks like the author put some effort into it; it just won’t be fair. Usual suspects: Most crew movies (NOTE: some are pretty good, don’t blam all) Crap that doesn’t look like effort or tutorial-educated Flashes with such huge bugs that they should be re-made |
1’s: This is the score that you give to something that deserves a low score and BLAMmage, but it isn’t pure crap. If it’s crap but it looks like the author made some effort, a 1 is the way to go. Usual suspects: Movies shorter than 30-45 seconds (unless they’re good) Demos / previews that aren’t any good Flashes with heavy bugs but look promising |
2’s: Ahh, here is the boundary between a BLAM and a protect. A 2 means that the flash qualified in at least (usually just) 1 of these areas: Aesthetically pleasing, smoothly integrated, good humor / parody or a good idea Remember: a 2 means that you want the flash to stay in the portal and that you want to give the author a chance. Feel good when you do it (unless the flash deserves better). Usual Recipients: Experiments (unless they’re good) A good try at animation, but not too good |
3’s: A 3 means that the flash is about the level of getting an award but still lacks some elements that persuades you that it will become an award receiver. You definitely enjoy and feel good as you watch the flash, and you somewhat like it. Also, any flash that has 2-3 of the requirements described in 2 deserves a 3. Usual Recipients: Most quiz games A simple game’s re-creation Something with effort but not quality |
4’s: Here’s the real deal of voting. A 4 means that you definitely like most of the flash and like just about everything inside it, but there’s space to improve. Think about giving a 4 as saying “Your flash is good, I would feel good if I made that myself”. Remember, a 4 is a score that most flashes cannot reach! Usual recipients: Good animation Extremely good humor A simple game on steroids |
5’s: Ahh, the long-coveted 5, how ironic that so many people out there are abusing it… A 5 goes to one of the more absolutely fantastical flashes that you will see in your lifetime. Think that your 5’s are limited, and that handing out a 5 is like getting an acceptance letter from college or a company. This is a swell thing to give and receive! Usual recipients: High-end series Insanely good animation Something you just love Something you made (lol) |
I hope that you learned something from this. Best wishes that you go out there and help preserve peace and honesty to stay in NG. Also, don't forget to beef up your other stats and to get higher levels! Also, since you will probably have your opinions on what gets what score, I cannot give you a quiz. |
Batting Averages |
Once you have submitted 3 flashes that pass through the portal, you receive something called a Batting Average, or BA for short. Your batting average ranks how well of a flash author you are, and averages the scores of your three best flashes. This means that even if you have some crappy- scoring submissions in the portal, they won’t affect your BA. The exact scores needed to get each grade is determined by how high or low the HIGHEST BA is in the portal, which is currently held by chluaid, creator of the YuYu, who has a BA of 4.23. |
There are (most commonly) a few different batting averages you can get. C+ You get this if you are around a low 2. This means that you are either a beginner or you suck at flash. Or both. Don’t worry though. You can improve with practice. B+ You get this if you are in the mid 2 – low 3 range. This batting average is not one to be ashamed of even if you are not a beginner. It means that you are a decent flash maker. A+ Anywhere from a mid 3 to a 5 would get you an A+. An A+ batting average can categorize you as an expert flash author, and getting this is a great achievement. |
