Ahoy Flash voyagers and welcome to Flash HELP! |
-Lets start in the Properties Window (located at the very bottom of the screen). -See where it says Frame Rate: 12 fps.? Well, the number 12 determines how many pictures you will see go by on the screen every second. -To change the Frames Per Second (FPS) just click on the number 12 and type in any number from 1 to 120. Most people prefer around 20 FPS, the higher the FPS the smoother your animation will be. |
Introduction |
20 FPS |
12 FPS |
Can you spot the difference? |
Main |
-So you need sounds? No problem. Flash comes equipped with its very own library of free sounds. -At the very top of the screen (menu bar), click on where it says Window. Scroll down to Common Libraries. Now scroll your mouse over to Sounds.fla then click on it. -A whole library of sounds should come up. To listen to a sound just right click on one of them and scroll down and click Play. -Ok, now you've got the sound you want. Just click and drag it over onto the canvas. Make sure a frame is selected before dragging the sound onto it. If a frame is not selected, it won't work. |
What and where is the canvas? |
When you open Flash, there are 4 windows that come up on screen. -The one on the far left = The Tool Bar -The one on the far right = The Color Mixer -The very bottom one = Properties -The one in the middle contains both the Timeline and your Canvas. Your canvas is the big white box in the middle of the screen. -Your Timeline is found in the upper half of the middle window. This is where frames are produced. |
Click here to close this window |
How do you select a frame? |
This is a frame, Simply click on it to have it selected. |
Selected frames will turn black like this one that I have selected |
-Here is an example of what you will learn to do in this tutorial. |
Tween Animation |
Example |
-Find the circle tool in the Tool Bar. -Make a circle on your canvas. -Now select Frame 30 and press F5 on your keyboard |
It should look like this |
-Right click on the same frame (Frame 30) -Select Create Motion Tween |
-With frame 30 still selected, press F6 on your keyboard. |
-Now, Still on frame 30. Go back down to your canvas, -Rightclick on your circle, scroll down and click on where it says Scale -Now 8 little, black, boxes appear around your circle so you can resize the object. -Click on one of the little boxes and drag it until its the size you desire. |
-Now click and drag your circle placing it anywhere on your canvas. -Go down to the properties window at the bottom of the screen. -See where it says Color: None ? -Click on where it says None, scroll down to Alpha -A box that says 100% and a smaller box with an arrow pointing downward should appear. -Click on the little box with the arrow, now move your mouse downward until your circle disappears |
-The Timeline doesnt only consist of just frames, it has layers too. Each frame you use, is in a Layer. -Layers are used if you want to place an object over another object. Each layer can only have one tween animation running at a time. So with multiple Layers, you can have multiple tween animations. Try it out! Your finished! To view your animation, go to where it says Control, at the top of the screen and scoll down and click Test Movie (your movie must be saved before viewing). |
How do I make more layers? |
This is a layer |
Click on this to create a new layer |
-Draw a line to fill the entire canvas. Now select your line and press F8 on your keyboard to make a MovieClip (MC). Inside an MC you can create as many frames or Layers as you want; without effecting your main Timeline. To open your MC just double click on your line. -Now bend the line so it is curved in the middle. -Now copy your line and paste it right beside your first one. -One of the lines should be completely offscreen. -Use tween animation to move the lines across the screen. |
Looping Backgrounds |
Your finished! To view your animation, go to where it says Control, at the top of the screen and scoll down and click Test Movie (your movie must be saved before viewing). |
What you see |
What you dont see |
-Frame by frame animation (FBF) is a sequence of pictures (frames) going by on screen to form what looks like your drawings are in actual motion. |
Frame by Frame |
FBF animation. |
-Start by drawing a picture on your canvas -Now insert another frame. To do this, click on your Timeline and press F7 |
TIP: When drawing FBF animation, draw an outline of each picture for each frame. Make sure its JUST an outline and no fancy stuff, this is incase you make a mistake; you dont have to erase all your hard work. Once your finished drawing the outlines, fill them in with colour. |
Did I do it right? |
Your Timeline should look like this |
-Now press the onion skins button, this will allow you to see your previously drawn frames. |
To activate one of the three different types of onion skins, click on one of these three graphics. |
-Now you should be able to see your previous frame. -Re-draw your picture on frame 2. -Make as many frames as you need to finish your animation. -Now add some sounds and your done! |
If you want your Text to stand out make sure it has one or all of these things. Also if you have lots of writing on the screen and want to get to the point, just highlight the important stuff by making it.......... -A different color -Bigger -Bolded. -In Italics |
Text |
-Making a backdrop for a text is easy and effective. -First make a text then change the colour. |
COOL |
-Then copy the words and paste them ontop of your first one. -Make sure each text is a different colour. -With both words aligned, now move the top words only slightly in any direction. -Now you have a "cool" looking shadow effect. |
COOL |
-I will now show you how to make a text with Linear graphics |
Example: |
-Do the same thing we did in the "cool" tutorial. -Right click the text that is on top. Now click on where it says Break apart. Do this twice. -With the same text selected, go up to modify at the top of the screen and click on Group. -Your text is now placed inside a box. You can not edit the graphics in this box unless you double click on it; so double click on it!! -Now go up to your Colour Mixer. See where it says Solid ? Click on that and scroll down to where it says Linear. -Now click on the Paint Bucket Tool, then click on your words to colour them. -To exit your Grouped text, just double click anywhere outside of your words. |
A pre-loader is generally used for the internet, it is a warning sign displayed before your movie starts. Basically it tells the viewer to wait while the movie loads; once the movies done loading, the warning sign disappears. In this tutorial you must have two scenes. To make a new scene, go up to modify at the top of the screen and select Scene. Now a new window should pop up. At the bottom of the window there is a plus sign. Click on the plus sign to create a new scene. To view your previous scene, just click on where it says Scene 1. -Make 2 scenes -Rename your Scene 1 to Loader. -Keep your Scene 2 with the same name |
Simple Pre-Loader |
-You need two layers, so go ahead and make another layer. On layer one, make 15 keyframes, do this by pressing F7 repeatedly. On layer one, select the first frame. Go up to Window at the top of the screen and select Actions. Then insert this code. Just copy and paste it. |
ifFrameLoaded ("Scene 2", 50) { gotoAndPlay("Scene 2", 1); } |
-That code basically tells the computer that, if your Scene 2 is completely loaded then the movie will play that scene. -The number 50 is the total amount of frames in Scene 2. You must erase the number 50 and type in the total number of frames your scene has. |
Having Problems? |
When coding: Make sure if your scene name has a capital letter in it, the capital letter goes into the coding; or it wont work. |
-Now copy and paste this code into Frame 3 This code basically does the same thing. |
ifFrameLoaded ("Scene 2", 60) { gotoAndPlay("loading", 16); } |
-Now copy and paste this code into Frame 15 |
gotoAndPlay(1); |
-That code will tell the computer to play the movie on Frame 1. This will put the loading screen in a continuous loop; until its finished loading. |
-Now go back to your scene named "Loader" -On layer 2, type in the words LOADING. -Your done! Have any left over questions? Click on one of the questions below for an answer. |
Frames with the letter "a" mean they have been coded (action scripted) |
Your Timeline should look like this |
-Before you animate any movie, it is wise to have a plan of camera angels and movements. This is what storyboards are used for. -Now go get a piece of paper and a pencil. -Draw 4 squares on your page -In each square you will draw a picture of the scene you want to happen in your movie. -Under each square you will write any dialogue, camera movements, character movements, etc. |
TIP: Drawings dont have to be extremely detailed, it just needs to be enough for you to understand how the scene will be played out when its animated. |

1.Mans face moves to the right, then fades |
1.Mans face fades in, moves right, fades. |
Storyboard now in motion. |
-When drawing a picture you must first draw an outline of the picture. -If you are doing FBF animation, you must draw your entire animation in outlines. Then colour them in when your done. |
Advanced Drawing |
-Now select your paint bucket tool and colour your drawing in. -You can also use Linear colours, just like we did in the Text tutorial. -Make sure to put the shadows in the right places. Try and imagine there being a big light shining on your character and its casting shadows in one direction. |
-Now add some colour to the lines and your done! |
-You will learn Easing in this tutorial. |
Advanced Tweening |
-Make a circle on your canvas -Now use tween animation to direct it from point A to point B, where ever you decide that may be. Easing out, is when your animation goes fast to slow. Easing in, is your animation going slow to fast. -To Ease your tween animation, click on the very first frame of the tween. -Now go down to the properties window. -Find where it says Easing 0. Beside the zero there is a small box with an arrow pointing down. Click on that. -Now a small graph bar will appear, move it up or down. Moving it up will cause your tween motion to ease out. Moving it down will cause it to ease in. |
-Most people use Photoshop for photo-manipulation. You are going to use Fireworks. Fireworks is very much a newbie friendly program. -When importing a picture to fireworks, there is a white background that comes along with it. -To get rid of this background, click on the Magic Wand Tool in the Tool bar on the far left. -Once your Magic Wand is selected, just click on the white background you dont want, then press Delete on the keyboard. These are examples of pictures used with and without the Magic Wand Tool. |
Fireworks Introduction |
Without |
With |
Wheres the Magic Wand Tool? |
This is the Magic Wand Tool. Just click on this symbol to activate it. |
-You must save your picture as a PNG. file or it wont work. -Now open up Flash. Go to File, Import. Then find your PNG. file and press OK. -Now that messy white background wont show up. And your done! |
-First draw a background in Flash or whatever program you desire -Then save the picture as a JPEG file. If you need to turn a drawing you did in Flash, into a JPEG. Select the frame you did the picture on, then go to File, Export Image. Then press OK. -Now open up Fireworks MX -Go to File, Import. Then find and select your JPEG file then press OK. -Go to where it says Filters at the top of the screen. Now scroll down to where it says Blur. Selecting Gaussian Blur will bring up a bar graph. Move the bar graph to the right to make your picture blurred. -Now Save your picture as a PNG. file. -Open up Flash and import it onto your canvas and your done! |
Blurring Backgrounds |
-So you want to blur a circle over a square |
-First make two layers, put the square on the bottom layer. -Make a circle and put it on the top layer. -Now copy and paste the circle into Fireworks -Now Select the Magic Wand Tool. -Select the white background and press Delete on the keyboard. -Blur your circle and then save it as a PNG. file. -Now import it into Flash and put the circle on the top layer again. You dont have to use circles or squares, that was just an example. So try it out! |
-Making games are extremely hard and take a lot of patience. -However, the game we are going to make today, probably isnt as complex as the ones you know of. -See the next page for an example of the game you'll make. |
Making Your Own Game |
You must make it from point A to Point B Without having your mouse hit any walls If you hit a wall you have to start over. |
Click on the circle to begin |
GOAL |
Dont click the mouse or you will die |
-The first step in creating this game you must make three frames. -On the first frame draw a circle. Then select the circle and press F8. Then select the option that says Button, then press OK. -Now open up the actions window(go to window at the top and select actions), then copy and paste this code. |
on (press) { gotoAndStop(2); } |
-Then on frame 3, type in the words, you win. |
-Now on Frame 2, draw a square -Make the square a button and put in this code. This tells the computer to go to Frame 1 if the mouse rolls over the square. |
on (rollOver) { gotoAndStop(1); } |
-Now make a layer that goes on top of your square. -Now draw your path in which the mouse can walk on without dying. |
-Now turn your path into a button -Enter this code into your path. |
on (press) { gotoAndStop(1); } |
-Now make a circle and turn it into a button. This circle is your level exit, when the mouse rolls over the circle; you have beaten the game. -Enter this code into the circle. |
on (rollOver) { gotoAndStop(3); } |
-Now on Frame 3, turn the words You Win into a button -Enter this code into the button This tells the computer to send the game back to Frame 1 once you click the words. |
on (release) { gotoAndStop(1); } |
-Click on frame 1 and paste this code into the actions menu. -Click on frame 2 and paste this code into the actions menu. -Click on frame 3 and paste this code into the actions menu. |
stop(); |
-If you are going to put a Flash movie or game on the internet, its a good idea to put in this feature. It disables the right-click menu; stopping people from cheating on games and pausing your movies for a frame by frame look. -To disable right-click; click on your very first frame of your movie; open your actions panel and paste this code into it. |
Disable Right-Click |
