Lesson 1 |
1 2 3 |
To create gradients, one must be familiar with both the fill panel and the mixer panel. If you hover the mouse over the various parts of the adjacent diagram, an explanation of each will appear, and if you click, the explanation will appear below... |
Lesson 1: The Fill Panel and the Mixer Panel |
Above is an example of a fading gradient. If you drag the rainbow disc underneath the gradient you can see for yourself how it fades, and how it effects colours. (I would normally recommend against rainbow gradients, but I feel it's actually appropriate in this particular case) |
Lesson 2: Fading Gradients - Part 1 |
Then, go to the mixer panel. It should look like the mixer panel to the right (if it's not working for you, make sure you have no objects selected). Here, change the colour if you wish, but to get transparency, change the alpha. For this example, set alpha to 0%. |
To create a fading gradient, do the following: First, open the fill panel and the mixer panel. On the fill panel, click here, and change the fill style to linear gradient. Then, click on a marker so it is highlighted. |
Lesson 2: Fading Gradients - Part 2 |
Your fill and mixer panels should look like those to the right. You'll notice that the gradient preview window features a grid behind it to make you aware of the effects of your alpha settings. To add the gradient to your list of colours (swatches) click on this button or this button on the fill panel. If you want to save your transparent colour click on in the mixer panel window. |

colours of the rainbow. You can change these if you wish, you can move them, and you can get rid of them by dragging them down. To create another (you can have a maximum of 8) simply click on the bar where there isn't currently a marker. |
If you select the rainbow gradient, and then goto the fill panel, you should see something similar to the picture to the left. You'll now see that there are 7 markers of all the |
Finally, I should explain rainbow gradients, such as the one I used for the disc. The rainbow gradient comes with flash, and is infamous because of its inappropriate use by new flash users (www.newgrounds.com/portal/view.php?id=19467 kind of explains what I mean). But the rainbow gradient is not the only multi coloured gradient you can have in flash (and I'm not talking about that chrome gradient either). |
Lesson 2: Fading Gradients - Part 4 |
Step 2 - Make the type into a movie clip (goto insert => convert to symbol, or press f8). This step is not totally necessary, but it does make things easier to do. |
Gradients have many different applications, in fact, almost anything in flash that requires some form of tonal blending can be served by gradients. The following example shows you how to create type with a 3d effect by using gradients. The end result should look something like this (click on it to see the steps): Step 1 - Write something, anything, that you wish to make stand out from all other type. |
Lesson 3: "3d" Type - Part 1 |
Step 3 - Edit your movie clip, click on the text, and go Modify => Break Apart (or press Ctrl+B). Then, create a second layer and copy everything to that second layer, using paste in place (Ctrl+Shift+V) to make sure that one is on top of the other. It will probably help if you make the letters on one layer a different colour to the letters on the other. Step 4 - Select a letter on the bottom layer (turn the visibility of the top layer off) and increase its size (about 120 - 130% is good) so that it is now slightly bigger than the same letter on the top layer. Do this induvidually for all letters. |
Lesson 3: "3d" Type - Part 2 |
Step 6 - now, fill the bottom layer using a linear gradient, as shown below left. After you fill the first section, click on lock to make sure the fill is consistent across the whole shape. Then, do the same for the top layer, but make the gradient go in the opposite direction. You'll notice this when comparing the examples below. (left:bottom, right:top) |
Step 5 - hide the top layer, and on the bottom layer, close all of the gaps and fill them in so that it looks about right when you turn the top layer back on. To close the gaps, use the line tool in a different colour, so that you can delete the lines once you are finished with them. |
Lesson 3: "3d" Type - Part 3 |
Step 7 - Place the movie clip where you want it in your flash movie! By creating it as a symbol you can reuse it over and over, so while there is a fair bit of work involved, you can use it as many times as you need without having to repeat the process. |
Lesson 3: "3d" Type - Part 4 |
So far we have only dealt with linear gradients. Now we shall look at radial gradients. Radial Gradients are pretty much the same as linear gradients, except that they blend in a circle, with the leftmost colour being on the inside, the rightmost colour being the outside of the circle. The example I use throughout this lesson is created as such: Below are all examples of the same gradient placed in a square. What we'll learn in this lesson is how to manipulate gradients as I have done below. The methods I used will also work for bitmap fills and to a lesser extent, linear gradients. The left gradient has not been manipulated at all, but all of the rest have. |
Lesson 4: Radial Gradients - Part 1 |
To acheive anything else, you need to be able to move the gradients, scale the gradients and squash the gradients. To do that you use this tool, the transform fill tool. |
When you have a radial gradient, and you use the paint bucket tool to fill an object, the centre of the gradient will be where you click and the outside of the gradient will be at the most opposite edge. If you hold down the mouse button a ring will appear which you can drag anywhere including outside the shape. None of the below fills have yet been manipulated. |
Lesson 4: Radial Gradients - Part 2 |
Replay |
rotate - rotates the gradient, allowing it to be stretched in more directions than just left to right |
move - this moves the entire gradient non uniform scale - this squashes or stretches the gradient to allow oval shapes uniform scale - this changes the size of the gradient while maintaining its shape |
To use the transform fill tool, first make sure no object is selected, then click on the paint bucket tool. You should now see at the bottom of the options panel on the tool bar the transform fill tool. If you now click on a radial gradient fill, you should see something similar to the diagram below. There are four different things you can do using this tool: move, non uniform scale, uniform scale, and rotate. |
Lesson 4: Radial Gradients - Part 3 |
This was made without one of those 3d flash programs - it's all illustrated by me using flash 5.0 |
This is another illustration by me, made in flash 5.0, and it uses fading gradients to simulate light |
The above shows how you can apply gradients to illustrations, to acheive an illusion of lighting |
