Welcome to the beginner section of the
advanced lipsynching tutorial. This section only
covers the nescescary information and the
mouth shapes. It is greatly reccomended you
take this section before the others.

First, You must establish several things.You
need a framerate. I highly suggest using one
greater than 15. Using the default of 12 will
lead to the mouth looking a little choppy, and
the sounds will sometimes be mixed together.
Secondly, you need your sound. Go to
File>import>import to library and browse for it.
Then, create a new layer, with a keyframe on
frame one and a keyframe on the last frame for
the sound to appear. (continued)

Then select your first frame and drag out the
sound anywhere on the stage. You should see a
rough drawing of your sound in the timeline.
Also make sure to put a bunch of empty
keyframes on the first layer. It should look like
the below example.

It may be obvious, but the way to animate
mouths is to select each frame on layer one and
add in the appropriate shape. If there are two
frames with the same sound, go ahead and use
the same mouth position from the last frame.
However, if the sound is a little different in
volume or pitch it may be a wise idea to redraw
it a little bit differently. It may help to use onion
skinning or the < > keys to toggle frames.

Now for the mouth postitions. If there are any
positions i missed or some really funky ones in
your sound, just use a mirror and your mouth.

That's just one of the styles, but it gives you the
idea of the positions. This concludes the beginner
section, now go on to the intermediate!

Welcome to the intermediate section. Here i will
show you the first style, which is fairly easy to
animate and works great to show a sense of
direction in your character. There are far more
than two styles of lipsnching, but i chose the
two most proffesional looking. This way people
can't criticize your flash's for looking too
"tweeny", or for having mouths that look like
black blobs. mouth shape transitions will also be
overviewed.

As usual, these sounds dont cover EVERYTHING,
all though i find it to be pretty sufficient.
Depending on things like the loudness, pitch,
mood, and exaggeration of the sounds, you may
want to modify it a little. That brings us to the
next topic: exaggeration.

Exaggeration is a style of lipsynching that, well,
makes the words look exaggerated. This is
especially good for comical flashes. It also gives
it a professional sense (if you do it right).
At first, exaggerating may sound simple, just
stretch a few of the mouths, right? but it's not
that easy. Likelyness is nobody will ever get it
perfect, except for a select few like richchap,
cosmoseth, David firth, etc.

First take lipsynch your flash using regular sizes
and shapes. Then, find your point of exaggeration.
For example, if your kitchen sink suddenly yelled
"Holy snap!!", then the point of exaggeration would
be the "a" sound (also the "o" sound)
Take two frames before the point and stretch it
just a little, maybe 5-10% more. Take the  frame
before it and stretch it maybe 15-20%. Take the
point itself and stretch it 40-50%. Since the last
sound is "p", you don't need to stretch it, but if it
was something else then you should do the same in
reverse.

That's just a start. If you want it to look better,
redraw the mouths by adding a new layer of
blank keyframes and trace over your old mouths.
This will get rid of the slightly "tweeny" look. You
can also mess around with the amounts of the
different shapes.
The only perfect advice i can give you is to
copy your own mouth. After all, that's the only
"real" mouth movement. Good luck, and go on to
the advanced section now!

Welcome to the advanced section of the tutorial.
This section will cover the other style of
animating, and ultra-basic character animation.

This style was allready shown in the beginner
section, so it's probably not so new. If you
allready know style 1, it shouldn't be hard to
learn. It's best for a straight-on view of the
person talking.

And now for basic character animation. It's
REALLY simple. Just draw a character with no
face in a movie clip. then add two new layers. On
one put the animated mouth, and on the other
put his eyes. To make him blink, put a random
frame of blinking on the eyes layer every now and
then. Your timeline should look about like this:

How to lipsynch birds. Birds don't have any teeth ,
but they do have a sort of a tounge, so if birds
could talk i imagine it would look something like this

Obviously it's innacurate. Birds aren't meant to
talk. But if you want it to sorta look like a bird
is talking, it might come out like the below
example.
