I&apos;m going review the most important drawing <sbr />tools: the Pencil Tool (B) and the Brush Tool (Y).</b></font></p>

Primary Drawing Tools:

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="22" color="#999999" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Back</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="22" color="#999999" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Menu</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="22" color="#999999" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Back</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="22" color="#999999" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Menu</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Choosing between these two tools can prove difficult alot of <sbr />the time, but basically it comes down to how clean you want <sbr />the end product. Remember: cleaner isn&apos;t always better.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>The Pencil Tool will produce clean lines that you can tweak <sbr />to perfection, some would argue it&apos;s products look TOO <sbr />perfect. Pretty much it&apos;s the tool that most people use for <sbr />well...everything.</b></font></p>

Pencil Tool:

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>It produces products similar to those shown above.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Again, very clean and stright.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Despite how good that sounds, the pencil tool isn&apos;t very easy <sbr />to sketch with.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>The Brush Tool, however, is much neglected by almost all who <sbr />don&apos;t have a drawing pallet. It gives work a more human look.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>A lot of people use it for frame by frame animations as they <sbr />can reproduce drawings with it quickly and effectively. </b></font></p>

Brush Tool:

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>It produces products similar to those shown above.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>See how sketchy they look?</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Alot of people use the Brush Tool for frame by frame <sbr />animation, as it is easy to reproduce drawings with.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Note: If you find yourself having trouble drawing straight <sbr />lines you should try the following:</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Holding shift</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Lowering your mouse sensitivity</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Note: If ever you find that your work is a little too messy, <sbr />you can clean it up by selecting your work and then going to <sbr />Modify &gt; Shape &gt; Whatever Suits Your Needs.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Your work should then look something like the example above.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>That pretty much covers these two tools. The rest comes with <sbr />practice. It isn&apos;t really something you can teach.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Try and find a nice balance between the two.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Most people believe in shading being optional; I do not.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Shading, if done correctly, makes any drawing look at LEAST <sbr />twice as good.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Character design is an important part of planning an <sbr />animation, and yes - it&apos;s all about planning.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="20" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Character Design</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>First of all, go to a public place with a sketchbook and a <sbr />pencil/pen. About 30 seconds per <sbr />drawing. Get comfortable with the way people move and look.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Once you have done this, you may begin designing characters <sbr />in Flash. Basically, you should design characters for <sbr />maximum flexability if you intend to animate them.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Let&apos;s begin.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>1. Draw all your limbs seperatly and group them <sbr />individually.</b></font></p>

<p align="left"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>3.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>4. Add shading. If you are not sure how to do this, click <sbr />Back (or press B) and take the lesson on shading.</b></font></p>

<p align="left"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>4.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Enjoy your new character!</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>After one has created a character, how should one go about <sbr />animating him?</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>This all depends on what you need the character to do, and <sbr />your patience threshold. </b></font></p>

Character Animation

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Basically there are two ways to animate in Flash. You can <sbr />either animate via tweens, or via cold hard frame by frame. <sbr />Generally you should find a nice balance between the two; but <sbr />this was covered in my last tutorial. On with the animating!</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Let&apos;s start with a simple walk animation.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>People go into great detail on walking animations. Really, <sbr />they&apos;re quite simple. The only slightly difficult part is <sbr />getting the legs to move correctly.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>This is a 14 frame walking animation.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>It is made of two movie clips. The legs and the torso.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Baisc leg animation structure is shown above.</b></font></p>

Legs

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>The basic torso structure is shown above.</b></font></p>

Torso

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="10" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>I had many requests for things in this tutorial such as running, jumping, etc. etc. <sbr />But I really see no point in teaching them as a simple google search will return a <sbr />million results for that exact thing. I want to see you animating WITHOUT the help of <sbr />a tutorial. That&apos;s why this tutorial doesn&apos;t give you everything. I want you to use <sbr />your own imagination. Try watching a person jump and then animating that.</b></font></p>

Character Animation

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>I want you to THINK before you start to animate something. <sbr />There is one thing I will show you, though. It&apos;s a handy tool <sbr />called Onion Skin. No animator should be without it.</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="11" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Onion skinning is basically creating shadows of your previous frames that <sbr />only you (the animator) can see.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="11" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>You&apos;ll find the onion skin tools under the timeline as shown above. You can <sbr />change how many frames behind or infront of your current position onion skin <sbr />shadow&apos;s on either side of the pink line indicating your current position.</b></font></p>

Onion Skinning

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="12" color="#000000" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Onion Skin</b></font></p>

<p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Targeting is basically your way of telling Flash which <sbr />object you wish to effect with your script.</b></font></p><p align="center"><font face="_typewriter" size="14" color="#ffffff" letterSpacing="0.000000" kerning="1"><b>Let me show you some examples and explain the code.</b></font></p>
