Welcome to the world of Flash 8. Your about to take on and learn the ‘Basics’ behind the amazing software. To do this, you will learn, discover and transform. The three simple steps to know Flash 8’s basic tools, etc so that the next time you are on Flash, you won’t have any bothers finding out where to find what you need. Also inside there is tips on how to animate! Enjoy... You are about to experience Flash... |
basics |
next |
learn |
step one |
The tools of Flash: The following tools are in the toolbox, if your toolbox does not appear in flash, go into window and click on tools, or use "Control+F2' to show it or disable it. |
previous |
Brush Tool (B) Paint Bucket Tool (K) Pen Tool (P) Oval Tool (O) Zoom Tool (M, Z) Subselection Tool (A) Gadient Transform Tool (F) Lasso Tool (L) Text Tool (T) Rectangle Tool (R) |
Pencil Tool (Y) Selection Tool (V) Ink Bottle Tool (S) Free Transform Tool (Q) Eyedropper Tool (I) Eraser Tool (E) Hand Tool (H) Line Tool (L) |
Two other tools you may see are in the colors part... The top one is for line colors and the bottom one is for the fill colour... |
File, edit, view... The main tool bar, the window control panel, has many options, file, edit, view, insert, modify, text, commands, control, window and help. These controls control your flash file and have all your items which you need to create the perfect flash project. |
The Timeline What is it? Think of the timeline as your movie, every frame eqauls a clip. For example, frame one, could have a circle, frame two could advance the circle to a different area. |
The Timeline Scenes and Symbols If you create a symbol 'more information in discover' you can double click onto it enter it's timeline. To go back, hit on the 'scene #' or the return icon. |
The Timeline Lock up! To lock your timeline, select the 'dot' below the lock symbol. This will lock the current timeline securing your timeline from use. |
lock |
The Timeline Show/Hide To hide away your timeline's drawings, etc. Select the 'dot' below the 'eye' icon, to make them appear again, hit on the 'dot' once more! |
show/hide |
The Timeline Show me those lines To show lines in a colour of your choice, select the green box below the sqaure, to change it back to normal re-click on it. If you want to change it, right click and view properties. |
show all layers as outlines |
The Timeline Editing and Zooming These are quick icons allowing you to edit a symbol or a scene or zoom in. You can select the symbol you want to edit or scene. |
The Timeline Framerate... To change your 'FPS' (frames per a second), double clikc on #.# fps. This will change the speed and may improve games, etc. |
The Timeline How long is it? 0.3 seconds?! Dam, this is a very short movie. |
Tweening Okay, so you don't know how to tween. Don't worry, you will be getting the hand of it now with a few simple steps. Example: First of all this create a new document and on the first frame in the timeline draw a circle. Now on this frame right click with your mouse and go to create motion tween, now simply go to any frame, this will be a guide to how long it takes to get to A to B. On the frame you've created move the circle to anywhere on the document you wish, and hit play! |
discover |
step two |
Tweening Well, now you've created your first tweening object: |
So you think the ball isn't moving that smooth or the way you want it? |
Now your circle should be moving more smoother this time around! |
Tweening So you've played around with that. But if your still now happy, then well... On any frame in your time line select it, and look at the properties. On the button beside Ease, select edit! A box should now appear! This is where the fun begins, and believe me it's easy to do! The graph is simply your time- line. Select say the middle and move it down, then play your movie again. It should slow down when it gets to the middle! |
Tweening Now we can move onto making a motion guide! On your circle tweened, hit on the Layer. Now, right click and go down into motion guide. You will notice a new Layer being made. Now just simply draw a line * not a straight one! |
If the above box isn't up, go into window, and toolbars and select Main. |
Tweening Select the first frame of the layer where you have your circle, and simply drag your circle to the start of the line! Now make a new keyframe at the last frame of the circle |
to the end of the motion guide. Please make sure that you still have snap up. Now your tweening should be complete. Your circle should follow the line you have made, and you won't be able to see the line! |
Transform! Put it this way, no one on newgrounds or any other flash site wants to watch your circle follow the direction of a line. And I doubt they'd even give you a rating of 1/5. So what does make the other animations so special around the web? Well it's about the way it's presented and now your going to do that yourself! |
transform |
step three |
Drawing Okay, so you aren't the best drawer on Flash, but hey you can still do it. First of all we're going to look into tracing. Go into google.com and search for your favourite animation character! For example 'Bart' out of 'The Simpsons'. |
Create a new document. And in first frame copy in the picture of your character you have found. Now, right click on the Layer and go down to insert layer. Lock this layer for now and go back to the picture. Right click on it and convert it into a graphic or movieclip and go into it's properties and where it says color, select alpha and make it vanish abit. Now Lock this layer and go to the layer you have created. In this layer, unlock it and start drawing over the image using lines. |
Drawing Woow, that turned out good... And it was easy! |
So there you have, your first traced drawing on Macromedia Flash. Hopefully it looks better than the one of Bart here. :P |
Drawing So by this stage you've learnt and discovered and transformed using tracing. But that's not really your own work is it? It is time for you to draw your own character. This name him Tim. |
I haven't been even drawn yet, so what you waiting on! |
Drawing Okay, so now draw a box. Any size, doesn't really matter... |
Use the arrow tool to make a shape of it like so... |
> |
Drawing Now draw eyes,a nose and a mouth. And maybe ears and hair to. You may wanna add shading aswell. |
About time! You finally finished drawing me! |
So there you have it... Thats all from this version of The Tutorial. Please note there will be a special summer edition with twice as much! I hope you have enjoyed your time playing with the guides in this tutorial! You can return to the main menu and get ready to take on two other parts 'Designing' and 'Programing'. |
complete! |
well done! |
Taking you into a world of imagination, the design tutorial gives you a lesson or two on how you design sites using Flash 8 and to design graphics. All you have to do is learn, capture it, and then create.... |
design |
Color Mixer Okay so in basics you learnt alot about where you find your basic drawing tools, etc. Now it's time to look at another neat tool. The color mixer! If you don't have this panel up, please window and select Color Mixer or hit 'Shift+F9' in your keyboard. |
Color Mixer Linear Radial |
Solid |
Bitmap |
It is cool what the colour mixer can do for your project. Look at the background of this. It's linear, and it has a cool radial circle down the bottom right! |
Flash Never Looked So Good! You've may have noticed some things looking like they've been done using photoshop in this tutorial. But guess what, they've been done using Flash8! |
When you create a button or movieclip make sure you check out the new advanced features. Flash 8 allows you to change the way the bitmap image looks or how the radial circle contrasts with the background! |
You've got an imagination, use it If your stuck or having problems on trying to make your Flash site look out of the world and unique then you may wish to look around the web for inspiration and see how they did their website. |
capture |
Click me Draw something which looks like a button, eg: Now, right click on it, and hit 'Convert to symbol'... You will have the following options: (select button) |
Click me You should have something like this now... |
Was that easy? Now this exit this scene and then right click on the button you made and hit actionscript. The action- script to go to a previous frame is: (copy & paste it!) |
on (release) { prevFrame(); } |
Go to previous frame... |
on (release) { nextFrame(); } |
Go to next frame... |
EASY! |
Now your button should be familiar to the button at the bottom of this page '< Previous'. That wasn't hard, was it? |
Next: |
on (release) { nextFrame(); } |
If it's a website, make sure you're timeline frames are stopped, so when you hit, next, previous or go to and play, it'll go to the frame: |
stop(); |
Go to and play: |
on (release) { gotoAndPlay(1); } |
Your site should be looking top notch So here's the final tips: - Enough of the solid colors, try using something better. - Give information on your site which is relevant to the site layout and background, eg: a holiday... - Make sure the right information goes into the right pages |

Making the Game The following parts of the tutorial: Learn: Learn the functions Make: Make your game |
Making the Game Time to learn... |
Making the Game SIMPLE GAME Credit for original tutorial: Rystic_force@hotmail.com |
Making the Game SIMPLE GAME - Draw a ball: - Convert it to a movieclip: - Change the instance name to CIRCLE |
make |
Making the Game SIMPLE GAME Now draw a square and convert it to a movieclip In the circle you created add these actionscripts (select control+A) to select all... |
onClipEvent (load) { fall = false; _name = "circle"; jump = 0; speed = 8; jumpheight = 18; maxfall = -54; } onClipEvent (enterFrame) { xmin = getBounds(_root).xMin; xmax = getBounds(_root).xMax; ymin = getBounds(_root).yMin; ymax = getBounds(_root).yMax; if (Key.isDown(Key.SPACE) && fall == false && jump == undefined) { fall = true; jump = jumpheight; } if (jump<>undefined) { if (jump>maxfall) { jump--; } _y -= jump; } } onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) { _x -= speed; } if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) { _x += speed; } } |
Making the Game SIMPLE GAME On the square add the following actionscript: Therefore make copies of the square where you want the circle to stand... |
onClipEvent (load) { activated = false; down = false; } onClipEvent (enterFrame) { _root.report.text = Math.round(_root.circle.yMax)+" "+Math.round(yMin); xmin = getBounds(_root).xMin; xmax = getBounds(_root).xMax; ymin = getBounds(_root).yMin; ymax = getBounds(_root).yMax; if (_root.circle.xMax>xMin && _root.circle.xMin<xMax && _root.circle.yMax<yMin) { if (_root.circle.yMax-_root.circle.jump*2>yMin) { _root.circle._y = ymin-_root.circle._height/2; _root.circle.jump = undefined; _root.circle.fall = false; activated = true; } } if (Math.round(_root.circle.yMax)>Math.round(yMin)) { if (hitTest(_root.circle) && _root.circle.xmax<xmin) { _root.circle._x -= _root.circle.speed; } if (hitTest(_root.circle) && _root.circle.xmin>xmax) { _root.circle._x += _root.circle.speed; } if (hitTest(_root.circle) && _root.circle.ymin>ymax && _root.circle.jump>-1) { _root.circle.jump = -1*(_root.circle.jump); } } if (activated == true && not hitTest(_root.circle) && _root.circle.jump == undefined) { _root.circle.jump = 0; activated = false; } if (hitTest(_root.circle) && _root.circle.ymax>ymin && _root.circle.jump<>undefined && _root.circle._y<_y) { _root.circle._y = ymin-_root.circle._height/2; _root.circle.jump = undefined; _root.circle.fall = false; activated = true; } if (_root.circle.ymax-_root.circle.jump>ymin && _root.circle.xMin<xMax && _root.circle.xMax>xMin && _root.circle.jump<>undefined && _root.circle._y<_y) { _root.circle._y = ymin-_root.circle._height/2; _root.circle.jump = undefined; _root.circle.fall = false; activated = true; } } |
Making the Game SIMPLE GAME Woow it worked! If it didnt click here! |
on (release) { getURL("http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic.php?id=152495", "_new"); } |
the above actionscript is for having a website appear |
