Under every rock, inside every living tree, under water and underground, animals hid. And they were good at staying hidden.They had to be to survive the ever increasing armies of monsters that marched across the mountains daily, threatening their very existence. As the war went on, animals had a harder and harder time surviving as food and shelter became scarcer and scarcer. It continued to worsen day by day, until eventually almost all the animals were pushed back and crowded into only a small corner of the forest. And here these animals sat and waited, knowing that they couldn't last much longer. |

For a few days, there was no sound of war, and some animals thought perhaps the war was over and the monsters had taken a break due to the recent blizzards. But that was only wishful thinking, as it turned out the monsters were only preparing for their biggest battle yet. And on the shortest day of the year that battle came, a battle the likes of which have never since been seen on Earth. Millions upon millions of lives were lost in this battle, and the bodies piled high enough to fill entire valleys. After the battle (which went long into the night), the monsters took those who were still breathing as their slaves and left the mountains which were all but stripped of trees and hope. |

Owl was neither a part of this war, nor really concerned with hiding from it. He was far enough away from the dark creatures and monsters that he didn't have to worry about them, and he was too concerned with Lady Owl to let this chaos run his life. It was this concern for Lady Owl, who lie on a tree branch far away, bleeding and poisoned that drove Owl to keep going every day. He talked to every animal he met, even the obnoxious ones, until eventually he found a desert shrew who told him of a leaf that was an effective antidote to the poison that was killing Lady Owl. But to find this leaf, he was told, he must first cross the desert to find the only surviving tree it lives on. |

Leaving at once to take advantage of the cool desert night, Owl began his long flight across the desert. He passed tumbleweed after tumbleweed, cactus after cactus, mesa after mesa. After awhile, everything looked the same. Moon sat calmly in the sky, watching the stars as they graced and danced upon the winter sky, and below, Owl passed another cactus, and looking into the distance saw only an endless supply of sand and dust. |

Owl flew all throughout the night, judging his way by the stars and Moon. When Sun rose, Owl was still flying and with no intention of stopping. Delusional from the heat and from not having eaten in many days, he saw things in front of him- cities and friends, water and food, teasing and taunting him in his desperate condition. |

Owl had gotten so used to all of these hallucinations that he barely noticed when he saw a fox drowning in a small pool in front of him. He was very tired and using all his energy to simply make his way to the tree, he passed the pool by. Happening to look back at the pool, Owl was shocked to find it just as he saw it a second ago, drowning fox and all. Suddenly aware of the reality of the situation, Owl turned around quickly and yanked the flailing, helpless fox from the pool. The fox faught with Owl, and when he was released, scowled at him, probably out of fear, and then quickly ran away. Owl sat for a second at the edge of the pool, took in as much water as he could stomach, wincing as the cold liquid made his stomach contract. Then, when he was finished, he pushed off with his feet and began to slowly fly, building up speed as he went. |

Sometime near the end of the day, in a windy, dry field, Owl arrived at the tree. He was looking forward to finding this tree, but when he saw it, it really wasn't that exciting, only relieving. Taking the leaf, Owl sat and rested for a few moments by the tree, then started out once again when he remembered the urgency of his situation. Night came and Moon sat calmly in the sky blowing cool winds across the desert night. As the heat of the day faded, insects chirped and the snakes and foxes went into their burrows. Owl was still flying, and he continued to fly without rest as he had done for the past four days. But his eyelids, which were becoming increasingly heavy, and his wings, which were growing increasingly tired gave out, and Owl passed out and fell to the ground, leaf in mouth and slept. |

Owl awoke early the next morning, feeling hot and uncomfortable. At first, he was a bit confused, forgetting where he was, but then things came back to him, one after another. At first he remembered Lady Owl and the leaf he had gotten for her. He tried to sit up, but found that he couldn't. That's when he noticed a fox sitting on his chest. The fox looked familiar, and upon closer inspection, Owl was quite sure this was the same fox he saved not a day ago. "So you've finally decided to get up, have ye," snapped the fox, grinning at Owl. "So where's me food?" asked the fox. To this, Owl replied that he had none. But the fox smelled the old leaf that Owl was carrying and took that with him. Owl angrily yelled for him to stop, but the fox had already taken the leaf and ran away. Owl followed him, but he was soon out of sight, and he had no choice but to make his way back to Lady Owl. Without the leaf. |

Owl passed the same lizards and strange rock formations as before. He passed the same houses and empty valleys. All the while, all he could think was that the whole trip had been for nothing. Lady Owl would die without him. But on the way back, he happened upon the same pool he saw on the way there. He saw a fox lying in it, just as before. Owl was sure he was hallucinating but decided to take a closer look to be safe. And certainly it wasn't a delusion, the fox had fallen head first into a pool once again. Only this time, Owl was too late to save him from drowning, and taking the leaf the fox still held, continued on, with a somewhat more positive outlook on things. |

Now I'm not sure if it was the wind, or the clear night, or something to do with Owl himself, but that night, Owl flew faster than he ever had before. He crossed the desert in less than ten hours, and found his way back to the mountains in only a few more. The situation was as urgent as ever, and Owl was reminded of this, when he returned to the mountains only to see most of them bare, the trees either trampled or turned to ashes because of the war. He feared for some time that maybe Lady Owl and Child Squirrel had been killed in the war. But Child Squirrel was resourceful and perhaps a bit lucky, too. The two of them survived the war by hiding. |

Owl made his way over the tallest mountains, threading his way to the tree where he left Lady Owl and Child Squirrel only days ago. Both of them were still there, sitting in one of the untouched sections of the forest, waiting and sitting in a makeshift nest of dry grass and straw. Child Squirrel had found some food and water for them both, and had taken good care of Lady Owl, bringing her as much food as she desired and making as comfortable a place for her as possible. But she didn't look too well. Her spirit had all but left her and she lie on the dry grass, sweating profusely, dying and in much pain. |

Seeing her this way was very difficult. Owl fed her the leaf, but it was too late. Lady Owl was only inches from death and this leaf, although powerful it was, was not quite powerful enough to heal her so late. All Owl could do now was sit and comfort he, knowing there was nothing he could do to prevent her death. Lady Owl soon took her last breath, saying no famous last words, just simply passing away with Owl and Child Squirrel nearby. |

That night, Owl and Child Squirrel celebrated the life of Lady Owl. They built a small fire and sat around, sang sad and happy poems and had a feast of twigs and berries. As Moon made her way high into the sky, they took Lady Owl and sat her body and her few meager belongings below a great Oak, then left her. Child Squirrel and Owl parted ways that night, Child Squirrel intent on starting a new family of her own, deep in the forest, Owl intent on finding meaning in this wartorn and lonely world. |

Owl surveyed the chaos around him. He flew into the clouds above the mountains and flew among them for hundreds of miles. Looking down, he saw only grim shadows of the mountains he once knew. These mountains were scorched and greenless, nothing to supoort life. Owl flew for days on end, looking for someplace safe until he eventually could go no further, and having reached the sea, realized there was nowhere else to hide. |

Owl sat by the sea, ruminating on his adventures and misadventures on Earth, and the mostly failing nature of them. He wanted to stay on this planet, but he didn't want to die. Looking back at the mountains, he saw nothing but fire and war. And Owl knew that it would stupid of him to stay here and get himself killed. Knowing of no other place to go, he headed for the City of the Gods. He thought perhaps he would get some assistance and maybe some advice from Bear and the other Gods from the City. |

Although it had only months since he had left his old home, it felt like years. The difference between Earth and The City of the Gods was greater than ever. While Earth was still sifting through mid-winter, The City of the Gods was in the full splendor of spring. As he approached, the smell of the flowers and the fruit of the bulla berry tree took hold of Owl and memories of a happier time started danced nostalgically in Owls head. Owl remembered so many things, so many great things, and he looked forward to sleeping in his soft bed, drinking from rivers of honey and dancing under the stars in this land of eternal summer. |

Bear was standing in the shade of a great oak tree when Owl returned. Seeing him in the distance, Owl wasn't sure what to expect of Bear. Owl had, afterall left under unfavorable circumstances, and he couldn't help but wonder for a minute if he wouldn't be safer on Earth. But as he approached Bear, it soon became obvious to Owl that Bear did not hold a grudge against him, and was actually glad to see the boy he had raised once again. As Owl approached, Bear bowed and nodded graciously, then turned and led Owl further into The City of the Gods. They had a lot of catching up to do. |

Bear led Owl back to the palace where he promised Owl would get a very good meal, like the old days. As Bear walked and Owl flew, Owl told Bear stories and about the land down below. And Bear laughed at him as he talked about freezing his wings on cold winter nights and meeting Lady Owl at the stream. Bear laughed at his stories as he watched the insects and butterflies dance upon the flowers. But when Owl told stories of war and the mass destruction that was going on down there, Bear didn't laugh, but became sad for a moment, and looked down at Earth in much grief. Owl felt that it was good to be home at least for a while. It was strange how familiar and similar everything was, and how hyper real it seemed now that he had other things to worry about. |

The palace was the same as Owl remembered it. Beautiful and majestic. The gold entrances, the well adorned guards, the torch-lit hallways and hand painted walls were as breathtaking as they had been the first time they had been seen. The two of them sat in a small study and had a nice little feast, and in this small study, they talked and reminisced. Bear didn't have much news to relay, he just told of his dull and happy days at the City, and how growing older had changed him. Owl had more to tell: the strange places he had been and all the weird and wonderful creatures he had seen. Bear laughed when he heard about the little Child Squirrel and was sad yet again when he was told about the monsters and dark creatures and the war down below. After dinner, the two of them went for a walk, and continued their conversation. Bear didn't provide Owl with any answers to his problems, but perhaps provided Owl a bit of insight when he told Owl he had some of the same worries and fears about the war down below. |

Sometime late that night, no matter what hour, Owl returned to his room. It was exactly the same as he left it, minus the personal servants. He came and petted the soft bed, and bounced on it, then lie, trying to sleep, but to no avail. He had grown so accustomed to the hardness of Earth and he found the balcony more comfortable with a bit of dry grass to lay in. Owl looked up at the stars and the great tree of life. He listened to the music whisper through the leaves. He watched the light dance in the night. It was all very beautiful and peaceful and perhaps perfect. As Owl sat and listened, he drifted off to sleep and he dreamed. |

In his dream, Owl dreamed he was walking down a mountain. He was walking, not flying so that he wouldn't draw a lot of attention to himself. And as he walked, his face started to change little by little. First he noticed he was growing horns, then he noticed he was changing colors and losing his feathers. It seemed that as he came closer to the fortress of the dark creatures, he was becoming a monster. It really wasn't all that strange, being a dream and all, Owl didn't worry. Instead Owl watched his step on the jagged path, balancing himself off of rocks and boulders, carefully making his way to the castle. |

Arriving at the stronghold of the dark creatures, Owl inquired about a job. He talked to the porter then waited outside the castle, all the while being peered at suspiciously by the dinosaur-like guardians who stood watch by the moat. The porter came back after several minutes, lowered the drawbridge and told the stranger to go down into the dungeon and talk to the head slave leader, who would give him a job. Owl rushed in, carefully avoiding the large thick legs of the guardians. |

Owl did as he was told, walked past the monsters who were guarding the cells, walked past the dimly lit dining hall where drunken monsters were laughing, walked all thoughout the maze of dungeon tunnels until finally arriving upon the room of the slave leader. And here, Owl rang his bell and waited for the monster to come. The monster looked up from his paper and laughed at the puny Owl, laughed that he wanted a job from him. He laughed and laughed until he couldn't breathe and told Owl to be gone. But Owl did no such thing. Instead, he made a mighty leap into the air and landed on the slave leaders chest, knocking him down with unbelievable force. The hit was so hard infact, that the slave leader was out for a few minutes and when he awoke, he found Owl inquiring about the job. The slave leader laughed again, and allowed Owl to have the job. Then, taking Owl by the wing, he took Owl to celebrate. |

Making the way to the great messy dining hall, which Owl had passed on the way in, the slave leader yelled to the waitress to bring him a few barrels of ale and he laughed. And Owl laughed, too. When she had brought the ale, he laughed some more, and in one gulp, emptied his cup. Owl emptied his cup, too, and several more. That night, Owl and the monsters laughed, partied, danced and drank until their stomachs nearly exploded. And when they couldn't stand to drink anymore, the odd-looking monsters told stories of daring-do and of saving princesses. All of them interesting or funny, but most of them no doubt untrue. This continued until quite late into the night when they all passed out either from tiredness or general drunkenness. |

The next morning did not come until very late and it was accompanied by many a hangover. Owl came down to the dungeon, which was warm and damp and dimly lit and he found the previous guard asleep on the floor. Going to wake him up to report for his own duties, Owl saw an odd, but somewhat familiar creature in the distance. Owl felt drawn to this creature like a moth to a flame and he went towards him, this mysterious creature who was standing towards the end of the cavern. |

The silhoutte of this creature was odd and narrow. It was at once unfamiliar and familiar. Owl approached this creature and when he saw him in the light, he recognized him. And when he recognized this creature, thoughts poured into his mind. He remembered that this creature had taken care of Owl for a long time when he was very little. He remembered that this creature had died protecting Owl. He remembered that this creature had taught Owl many things about Earth, the seasons, and life. And he remembered that this creature was a God and his name was Snake. |

When Owl saw Snake, other memories began to come to him too. In an instant, he saw his whole life flash before him and all in perfect focus. He saw his days spent in the luxury of The City of The Gods. He saw his toils on Earth, his losses and his achievements. He saw his own birth and the birth of the universe as well. He saw possible outcomes for the future. A dark future filled with greed and sadness and a bright future filled with balance and patience. |

Just as Owl was about to wake up, he saw a dark creature once more. It's eyes staring coldly and hatefully at Owl. The eyes were intense beyond intense and Owl felt like his thoughts were being read. But even if they weren't, the vision was clear: if Owl were to challenge things and face this war, he would face dark things once more. Perhaps ones even worse than the dark creatures. Perhaps even death. |

Owl woke up to find Sun shining dimly and harshly through the blinds. After looking out on the valley once more, listening once again and smelling the air for one last time, he went up to the worshipping mound to find Bear sitting, praying to Sun. Owl tried to approach quietly, he waited and listened as Bear meditated, but this Owl was never a very stealthy one and Bear heard him and broke off his meditations early. |

And the two of them talked. They talked about the war and the darkness, and since it was on Owls mind, they talked about what they should do. Was it their place to interfere and take the world into their own hands? Was it better to be martyrs or to distance oneself from the problems of others? In the end, though the two respected eachother, they held opposite philosophies. Bear stayed in The City of The Gods, waiting and watching, and Owl returned to Earth, intent on making a difference. As Owl left, he couldn't help but think that perhaps Bear had not always been honest. That Bear had been greedy. Afterall, it was Bear who had tried to kill him when he was so little. But Owl believed in Bear. He believed he had changed and grown. The Bear he saw today was not the same Bear he knew before he was sure. And Owl was right, for at that same time back in the City, Bear was having a heated argument with Eagle. Eagle was accusing Bear of ruining things for not capturing Owl and Bear was laughing at Eagle, saying that an end would come rather he wanted it or not. Eagle didn't like this and at once flew off to put an end to this Owl, this Owl who it was prophesied would be the savior. |

But Bear was not far behind Eagle and quickly caught him. As he did so, he yelled at Owl to fly. And fly he did as Eagle cursed at Bear, Owl flew fast and far, knowing this was perhaps the end of it all for him. When Owl looked back, he saw Eagle behind him, but it didn't look like Eagle anymore, just an assortment, of greedy, dark creatures. Eagle cursed at Bear and laughed at Owl and he quickly gained on the little bird. The dark creatures quickly surrounded Owl, laughing and scowling, and Owl closed his eyes, feeling for sure it was the end. He flew and flew, wincing, certain that the dark creature would soon tear him to shreds and that Earth would soon die. |

But he wasn't torn to shreds at all. When Owl managed to look back, the dark creatures were nowhere close enough to him. They were instead hovering around Bear, who had torn a piece off of Eagle in a last attempt to stop him and divert his attention. Owl looked back as the two Gods fought on, their blows echoing like thunder and lightning. |

Owl knew the situation was desperate, and so he came to Sun and pleaded with him, telling him about the Gods who had turned into dark creatures. Showing him the just how bad the destruction on Earth was. Reasoning with him to put an end to these dark creatures who had started so much chaos and ruin. Sun saw this all and it made him both angry and sad, and he thanked Owl and promised to do something right that moment. Indeed, Sun had been quiet in the situation for far, far too long. Sun beat his drums and said farewell to Earth and Moon, then he went far, far away, knowing that leaving Earth alone with only Moon was drastic and would likely spell the end for the Gods, but it was the only way he knew to put an end to the dark creatures. |

Without Sun's warmth, Earth fell into a deep sleep and her surface became cold and damp. Animals sensed the coming of a very dark time and constructed a huge fortress to protect themselves from the wind and the snow. When it was done and filled with all sorts of animals and creatures, snow it did, and the animals were glad they were so prepared. Moon held and nurtured Earth. And as Earth slept, she healed slowly, but surely. As Sun predicted, his absense slowly killed the dark creatures. The City of the Gods and the Gods themsleves also died without Sun's warmth. They were sad to have to go, but were willing to sacrifice what was for the greater good. |

After forty days of continuous snow, a faint glow of hope came. The animals looked out from their fort to find that the snow(which had piled up to fifty feet in some places) was beginning to melt. As Earth woke up, Sun returned. Earth was still weak, but her strength was returning. The surface of her planet was much the same. It was still cold and frosty and dim. But eventually, life returned. When the snow began to get very thin, you could see the grasses, flowers and trees springing to life once more. Renewed, Earth was much stronger now, and wiser, too. |

And Sun and Moon were much wiser as well. They knew all those years of petty arguing and fighting over their daughter were pointless and decided never again to do such dumb things. Happy that their daughter was well for the first time in quite a long time, the two old lovers rekindled their love once again, although it would be some time until they would birth their second child. For now, they were happy just to watch their daughter and sing and dance. And every so often, look onto the blue light, the great creator for inspiration. |

Meanwhile, on the surface of Earth, a funny thing happened. I'm sure you remember those monsters that were fighting the wars. Well, they didn't die because of the blizzard, but they did change. They became frozen with the start of the blizzard and stayed that way for months. When it began to get warmer, the monsters thawed out. But they weren't monsters anymore, merely men. Free from the spell of the dark creatures, they took their freedom and laughed. The animals watched the men for some time, still distrustful of the ones who had done so much damage. The men realized this and went their own way. Eventually, animals wouldn't fear men so much, but the two never came close to living together again. Men stayed in their villages and castles and huts and the animals stayed to the wildlands. |

And who could forget about Owl?Owl returned to Earth and helped build and rebuild cities and forests. He spent most of his time doing some dull work, but in the end it was very rewarding. Child Squirrel, meanwhile went on to revolutionize squirrel culture. She taught the squirrels all the secrets of tree-climbing and tree dwelling and it's because of her that to this day, gray squirrels are so good at tree-hopping. Owl was eventually elected mayor of a small rural community. He did such a good job and was so honest(unlike most politicians) that he was eventually named president. |

Owl never thought of himself as a hero or a savior. He lived a quiet life and would dream constantly of meeting another Owl, praying to the blue light to give him one. But one never came. Every night, he would look at the stars and he could swear that he saw Bear and Snake smiling back at him. Sometimes, he thought he even saw Lady Owl. Who knows? Perhaps he did. Owl didn't live happily ever after. But close enough. |
