This is the info page for Flash #97001 |
The brain and the eyes have a special interrelationship that goes well beyond what you may normally consider. While most people think that what you see is simply what your eyes "see" and send to your brain, the truth is that much of what we see is actually information made up by our brain -- things that our eyes never actually see! The following tests will demonstrate just how big of a role our brain plays in what we see (and don't worry... nothing is going to jump out at you and scream, we promise!) |
Below, you'll see a star on the left and a large dot on the right. Cover your left eye, and look at the star using your right eye. With your left eye closed, slowly move closer to your monitor. At some point, the dot on the right will vanish (if you move even closer, the dot will re-appear). |
"So what?", you say? Well, what's interesting is not so much that the dot disappears -- but that your brain fills in the space where the dot was (in this case, with light gray, like the background). If your eye didn't see the black dot, how did it see the gray background? It didn't! Your brain made it up! |
Maybe you're still not convinced... This time, we put the dot on the left and the star (now spinning) on the right. Cover your left eye, and look at the dot using your right eye. When you move closer to your monitor, the star will vanish, and your brain will "fill in" the spot with light gray. The spinning of the star in no way "distracts" your brain, because your eye simply never sees it. |
Maybe you're thinking that the light gray background is the key. Nope! Cover your left eye, and look at the dot again. When the star vanishes, your brain fills in the space with (you guessed it) blue. |
Flip the red and blue, and try again... Just as expected, the star vanishes, and your brain fills in the space with red. |
This time, we'll quickly alternate between red/blue and blue/red. Try it again. Even with the colors rapidly alternating, your brain correctly fills in the area which your eye can't see. |
Ok, you get the picture (no pun intended!) For our finale, we're going to use a complex pattern instead of a solid color. Try it again. When the star vanishes, your brain will fill in the area that your eye can't see with the surrounding checkerboard pattern. We don't know about you, but we're amazed! |
We hope that you've enjoyed this little mini adventure into just one of the many amazing functions of the human brain. Remember... our eyes are only as good as our brain, so keep that brain in tip-top shape, or who knows what you might end up seeing! |
