What would it have been like if you had lived
in ancient Sparta or in ancient Athens?
You would have lived in a City State and
would be very proud of it! You would also be
proud of being Greek.
The ancient Greeks were thinkers. They
loved to talk. They worshipped their gods
and respected people. They loved beauty,
music, literature, drama, philosophy, politics
and art and some even loved battle and
sports.
Sparta's powerful army is ready for war.
Athens knows that it cannot defeat this army
... but it has a Navy and Sparta does not.

The year is 430 BC. Poliphus and his family
from Athens and Sparcus and his family
from Sparta are thinking about the future.
They each have different points of view!!
We follow the story of the war between
Athens and Sparta as seen by these two
families.

BACKGROUND

Background
We go back to the year 430 BC. The Ancient
Greeks were squabbling again. City states
joined together against each other ...
Corinth, Thebes, Delos, Corcyra, Plataea ...
all took sides. Sparta and Athens were the
greatest city states. Both had trouble in
finding food to feed their people. The soil on
the land surrounding their cities was too
poor to grow grain.
So they joined with the other city states who
had better land and could grow enough food
in exchange for being protected by Athens
or Sparta.

Athens had a very powerful navy. Sparta
and its friends became worried that Athens
was becoming too strong.
If they didn't attack Athens soon, Athens
would soon rule them all.

Act 1
Behind the Walls
The year is 430 BC. The Spartan army has
just invaded Attica, which is the area around
Athens. The Athenians know that the
Spartan army is too strong for them and
have locked themselves inside the city
instead of fighting. They hope the Spartans
will just give up and go away. But a terrible
plague has broken out in Athens and many
people are dying ... try as they might, the
Spartans cannot get into Athens. The
Athenians can get supplies of food into the
city through the port of Piraeus as the
Spartans do not have warships to stop
them!!

Sparcus and his family are SPARTAN. Even
during war life must go on ...

Meanwhile in Athens, behind the long
walls ...Leading Citizen Pericles and the
Athenians wait for the Spartan army to go
away. Poliphus and his family have their
problems too.

I'm 7 years old at last. I'm very excited. I can go to school now. The school is in the
soldier's barracks. I'm going to learn how to be brave and how to fight. People say
that the older boys will pick fights with me and beat me till it hurts ... that there will
never be enough food ... that I will have to lie and cheat and steal to survive.

Whatever happens my father, Sparcus, must never hear me complain. For I am
Spartan and proud of it. They will teach me how to read and write, but we Spartans
don't think that's important. To be a soldier is what we all want. To defeat Athens.
When I am 20 I will have to pass a difficult test of fitness, military ability, and
leadership skills. If I pass I become a full citizen and a Spartan soldier. If I fail, and I
don't intend to, I will merely be Periokos ... middle class!!!

Sparcus the Younger

I'm really proud of my grandson Sparcus. Just think, both son and grandson here in
the barracks.
I've only one year of service left now, my sixtieth year has arrived. I fear that this war
will not be short. We march soon to join the army in Attica.
May the gods continue to be kind to me.

Patronus the grandfather

It's time for me to go to school as well. I must live in the barracks. I don't know what
to expect. I know that I will be expected to learn wrestling, gymnastics and combat
skills.
They want to make me strong. Spartans believe that strong young women produce
strong babies.
When I am 18, if I pass my skills and fitness test, I will be given a husband and
allowed to return home even though my husband will not live with me.

How lucky I am. Two perfect children, Sparcus and Polonia.

Every Spartan, male or female, must have a perfect body. When babies are born in
Sparta, Spartan soldiers come by the house and check the baby.
I was worried about Sparcus ... he had a spot on his nose the day that the soldiers
came ... it was a good job that Uncle Patronas was in charge ... he can't see very
well ... he's nearly 60 and ready to retire. This is his last war! He's excited. He always
wanted to fight against the Athenians.
If my babies had not been healthy and strong, they would have been taken away,
and left to die on a hillside, or taken away to be trained as a slave (a helot). Our slaves
are VERY ugly.

Now that's what I call really sensible.
Sparcus wants to be a soldier. Instead of playing in the fields with me he wants to
go to school to learn how to fight. I just can't understand it. Thirteen years of training
to be a soldier and he might only last 10 minutes in his first battle.
No doubt he'll want to take his dog into battle with him. He'll be a bit disappointed ...
I'm 2 already!

I'm really proud of my son Sparcus. Trepula has brought him up well. I look forward
to seeing more of him now. He'll be here in the barracks with me.
I'm sure his mother will not miss him too much. We can BOTH visit her now and
again ... then when I'm 60 Trepula and I can retire to Samos ... the weather is fine there.
Soon I must go to Athens and join in the seige of the city.

Now that I'm 7 years old I must go to school, even though the Spartans are
surrounding the city. Momus , our slave, cannot teach me any longer. I'm going to
Alatus' school where I will stay until I am 14.
Books are very expensive and rare, so everything is read out loud and I will just have
to remember. At least they'll give me a writing tablet and my very own ruler.
In primary school, I have to learn two important things - the words of Homer, a
famous Greek poet, and how to play the lyre, a musical instrument.
Alatus will choose what other subjects we will learn.

These are dark days.
Pericles has got his way. He's persuaded the Council to play for safety... to shut
ourselves in behind our walls. In all my years in the Assembly I've never heard such
things.
Pericles says that the Spartans will get bored sitting outside the city ... they'll go away,
get fed up.
I don't believe it. We have 19,000 soldiers in our army ... we have another 3000 to
guard the city walls AND 1600 special archers.
We should ATTACK. 50 years ago the Persians marched into our city. We dare not let
the Spartans do the same. But ... they would not listen to me. My oratory was not
good enough.

I'm sad that Poliphus is going to school. I'm not allowed to go. I have to stay here at
home.
I am going to learn to read and write though. I will sit in the courtyard behind our
house and teach myself.
I think I will read ALL of Aesop's fables. I do like them. Momus used to let me listen
when he read them to Poliphus.
I will just have to stay here at home and help mother nurse our family through this
DREADFUL plague that has hit the city.

We make our own clothes. It's too expensive to buy them in the Agora ( market ).
Linen or wool, we spin and spin.
We can just afford to buy jewelry from the peddlers... you know hairpins, rings, and
earrings, that sort of thing.
We even make our own perfume by boiling flowers and herbs.
Today we must wear our finest. Grampus and Poliphus are to entertain Pericles himself.
Such an honour for our humble home. It's not often that our leader goes out these days
with such a dreadful plague in the city.

Such an honour, the Great Pericles himself has chosen to visit us. He's dyed his hair
blonde!!
I haven't been out of the house for weeks. It's not the plague that keeps us women
inside ... we're just not allowed out very often by our husbands. We can go to weddings
and funerals and to some of the religious festivals. Poliphus lets me visit Appolina next
door one a month if he's in a good mood. He wouldn't even let me watch the games last
year as the athletes didn't wear any clothes!
I've prepared our finest food for Pericles ... olives, grapes and figs. I hope he likes the
goat's milk cheese. Like us, he doesn't eat meat ... we save that for the sacrifices in
the temple. I wonder why Pericles has come? Why is he sneezing so much?

Appala the Mother

My friend Poliphus!! That's what Pericles called me, even though my silly father,
Grampus, placed his stone in the pot to vote against Pericles. My stone was first
placed ... Pericles said thet I was an example of all that is finest in Athens... with men
such as me the Spartan army could be 'defeated.'
Pericles said that we, the Athenians, were never to offer or accept a chance of battle
by land against the Spartans. No resistance was to be offered even if the enemy
invaded Attica. The county-side must be abandoned, when the enemy came up to the
walls. Only when the enemy left was the Athenian army to come from hiding. In the
meantime we could send our ships to do what damage they could.
Brilliant plan ... no-one gets killed ... Sparta gets bored and goes home. That's why I
voted for Pericles and why Pericles treats me as his friend and honours my humble home.
My nose is running.

Alas, poor Uncle Pericles is no more. All of
Athens has turned out to mourn him ... even
little me.
They blame poor Uncle Pericles for the
plague. He kept everyone herded inside the
walls while the Spartans camped outside.
Athenians, penned up like cattle they said.
He didn't die a quick death like most
people... just hung on for weeks ... told the
Athenians not to mourn for him. Just look at
them!

Oh by the way ... my name is Alcibiades.
You're going to hear a lot about me as the
story of this sad war continues. I'm a nice
chap... really!!

Peace at Last

The year is 420 BC. The Spartan army has
been sitting outside Athens for the last
10 years except for one year when they
had a truce. Nicias of Athens has now
arranged another truce, supposed to last
for 50 years. Everyone is allowed to go
home. Athens keeps its land, and Sparta
gets to keep all the land it had won in
battle.
Not everybody welcomes this, especially
Alcibiades who has just been elected
STRATEGOS by the Athenians.

Sparcus and his family have seen many
changes! But the Spartans themselves have
NOT changed.

Poliphus and his family are still going strong.
They all survived the plague and now look
forward to better times ahead.

I'm 17 years old now. I'm a fighter, I'm a bully. I like it when new boys are admitted to
the school. I 'toughen' them up ... the beatings never did me any harm when I arrived
... does them good.
My lying is developing well but I still need some more practice.
I got beaten the other day. Maxilla and I were feeling a bit hungry so we went out to
steal a chicken or two. Very tasty they were. Unfortunately the farmer spotted us
taking them and reported us. We got beaten ... not for stealing the chickens ... but for
getting caught. It hurt.
So the war with Athens is over ... never mind, there'll be other battles for me to fight
when I become a soldier in a couple of years.

I'm now 69 years old. They made me retire when I was 60. I still put my armour on
now and again, just to remind me of the old days. When I was 30 they gave me a plot
of land just outside the city. I never saw it until I retired. My slaves looked after it for
me. Now I live there ... an honoured and respected Spartan.

When I retired they made me a member of the council. There were 28 of us ... all over
60. Survivors we were. As the COUNCIL we made the laws, we judged the criminals.
Now I've been made a member of the EPHORATE. There are only 5 of us We are
higher than the Council. We run everything from the schools, to the army. We can
even overthrow the King. We even decide which babies should be left on the hillside or
sold as slaves. ( I don't really like this ... but we are Spartan! I've a case to judge
tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to the mother's tears.)

I take my test next year. If I pass they will give me a husband. I'll have no say in who
it will be.
I wish it could be Pyramus. I first saw him when we were out running. He's tall and
handsome and has such a lovely smile. He was picking grapes from the vines on his
master's farm.
We took to meeting secretly, sometimes in the apple orchard behind the school,
sometimes near the fig trees. I think we are in love.
They won't choose Pyramus as my husband ... a spartan may not marry a helot!

Oh woe is me. The soldiers are coming today to inspect little Iolanda. The Euphorate
have insisted. Even the grandchild of Patronus must be inspected. Spartan perfection
must continue.
I don't want to lose my little Iolanda. I hope she is given to a good family who will treat
her kindly. We would keep her ourselves, but it wouldn't be Spartan.
Sparcus will not help, neither will Patronus. A member of the Euphorate cannot help me.
Just one finger missing. One finger short of perfection and she is condemned to spend
her life in slavery. Poor Iolanda. I will miss her. I'll try not to cry.

I'm a very sad dog. I've been sitting outside of the walls of Athens with my master,
Sparcus the getting elder, for the last ten years.
It was so boring. Even though Sparcus was a member of the Spartan secret police, so,
so boring. Then two years ago I made a friend. I met this little puppy while we were
doing a bit of slave spying ... it belonged to an Athenian called Alcibiades ... (I think he
was important), and we became great friends. He was called Hermes, always dashing
about and flying from here to there.
Now I'm back here in Sparta and I'm missing Hermes who is still in Athens with his
master. It's just not fair. My first real friend. I'm a very sad dog.

Ten years I have been away. Only once was I allowed home.
The Helots are becoming dangerous. They are starting to question.
Young Pyramus is a danger to us. I must keep special watch on him. I need no
evidence to 'quieten' him.

I feel like a stranger in my own city. Everyone has changed. Polonia looks at me
strangely, Trepula cries all the time ... even Zeus has sadness in his eyes.

School is not for me. I could never play the lyre properly. For 10 years I have
studied... I have learned nothing. Next year I go to Military School. That will be much
more exciting. Until then I will help Grampus' friend ... Alcibiades.
The Games are next week. Alcibiades has entered seven ... YES ... seven chariots, not
even a King has entered so many before. I am to hold the reins of the lead team. It
will be such an honour if Alcibiades triumphs in the Tethrippon.

Well I'm still alive. Ten wasted years ... and now we have a leader again. My friend
Alcibiades. He favours me, he listens to my advice ... he lets me look after his dog
while he's training his chariot teams.
It's such a nice little dog. I do everything for him. I even take him for walks now that
we can go outside the city walls.
For some reason he seems restless and sad when we visit the places where the
Spartan secret police had made their camp. He just sits on a little hill and howls. I
wonder why?

I am to be married to Diomedes. My father is arranging my dowery. Diomedes is much
older than me, but that is our way. Such an honour to be marrying a friend of Alcibiades.
It will be after dark when my wedding begins. I'll have to put on my best veil, father will
drive me to Diomedes' house in a chariot. My family will follow the chariot on foot,
carrying our gifts. All our friends will light the way with torches and will play music to
scare away evil spirits.

During the wedding ceremony, I must eat an apple to show that my food and other
needs would now come from my husband.
I wonder what the gifts will be ... baskets, furniture, jewelry, mirrors, perfume, vases
filled with greenery.... I can't wait.

It's such a joy to be able to travel outside the walls of Athens. I must ask the ORACLE.
I'm going to DELPHI. There's a temple there, it belongs to the god Apollo. If you take
the right gifts and say the right words the priestess will tell you the future. The priestess
listens to the god Apollo. She speaks in a strange language to the priests, then they tell
you what she means.
But what shall I ask?
I may ask if Carintha will be happy with her new husband ...
I may ask if Grampus and young Poliphus are safe with their new friend Alcibiades.
I may ask who will win the chariot races at the games and have a 'bet' and win a lot of
money!

I just love weddings. We women are not allowed out of the house very often, so a
wedding is a real joy.
I must look my best for Carintha. New hairpins, rings for my fingers and my ears ...
the finest that Polyphus cannot afford!
I shall make Momes boil the flowers and herbs and I shall wear their perfume.
I think I will wear my hair high, coiled and waxed, with that little gold band that
Messupa bought me last year.
Then we will dance. Music played on lyres, flutes, tambourines, cymbals and castanets.
The men will dance their dances and we will dance ours.

Carintha has been my property for the last seventeen years, now she becomes the
property of Diomedes ... 50 years old if he is a day!
The dowery is arranged. Carintha will want for nothing in her marriage. Diomedes drove
a hard bargain, especially over the house. But all is ready for the marriage.
Tonight I meet Alcibiades for the ceremony ... I will make the promises for Carintha and
Alcibiades will make them for Diomedes. I must remember to tell Carintha in the
morning that she is married.
Then there will be all the fuss ... Appala wants a traditional party ... I suppose I'd better
agree. Torches and dances and all that sort of thing.

The Games are Over
416 BC
Hello, it's me again. Good old Alcibiades. So
what have I been getting up to? My chariots
did rather well in the games ... I came 1st,
2nd and 4th. Euripides said I came THIRD!
The crowd went wild. I am such a popular
person now they will do anything for me.
But that all seems a long time ago now.
It's somewhat boring here at the moment. I
feel like war again. We can't attack Sparta,
Sparta is too strong.

I have a plan ... a cunning plan. We attack
Sicily, the island which supplies Sparta with
food. Without Sicily the Spartans will soon
be defeated ... they cannot last ten years
like we Athenians did.
Nicias has asked for 134 triremes and
27,000 men for the attack. He thought the
Council would say that it was too expensive
and that my plan would be dropped. But
THEY SAID YES!!
Sicily here I come.

Whose Side are You On?
The year is 415 BC. The war between
Athens and Sparta has started again.
Alcibiades has persuaded the Athenians to
attack Syracuse in Sicily with a massive fleet
of triremes. The aim is to cut off Sparta's
supply of food and bring the enemy to its
knees. Alcibiades and Nicias have been
made joint commanders of the Athenian
fleet. But all does not go according to plan.
There is treachery afoot.

Letters are received by each member of the
family. Read them as historical evidence.
Can you discover what dreadful things our
'friend' Alcibiades has done ... and what
dreadful deeds have been done by others?

Sparcus' family welcome a new friend and
seem to be in turmoil. Death is in the air.

Poliphus and his family are feeling betrayed.
There is danger, disaster and difficulty
ahead.

You passed your test just for this moment. You are now a full citizen and a soldier of
proud Sparta. I am honoured to have a son in Syracuse with the Sicilian army.
Take the Athenian fleet by suprise ... Alcibiades says that they will not have lookouts.
Fire ships would be a good idea. The fleet will be crowded in the harbour. 134 triremes
cannot leave in a hurry. When the wind is in the right direction send in the fire ships
and watch them burn the Athenians.
When the Athenians flee and try to cross the marshes attack them every hour of the
day. Drive them towards the river. They will be thirsty. Wait for them in hiding until try
to cross ... and then .....
It will be a glorious victory my son. Death to Athens

You did not save my daughter Iolanda ... I have never forgiven you. Now you side
with traitors. Alcibiades cannot be trusted. Mind you he's just like a Spartan... lying,
cheating all that sort of thing. In fact he's almost as rotten as you.
Little Iolanda still thinks of you as her Grandfather. I send you this potion in her name.
You are a very Ancient Greek now, 74 years old. This potion will give you new strength
and energy. Mix it with a little wine, share it with Alcibiades if you wish. Drink deeply,
close your eyes and remember Iolanda.

Come home at once. The helots won't revolt just yet. Sad news. Patronus died yesterday.
He was just sitting there with that wretched Alcibiades, enjoying the sun ... playing with
Hermes the dog ... enjoying a glass of new wine. He just slumped forwards over the
table, turned his head, muttered 'Iolanda' , and died.
It was so sudden. If he hadn't been such an Ancient Greek you might have suspected
that he had been poisoned or something. The King and the other Ephorates have arranged
his funeral ... just a simple affair, very Spartan. They wait for your return. So leave off
chasing the helots, especially that Pyramus. He means no harm, he just likes the sound
of his own voice ... no one listens to him.

I kept telling you to work hard. I kept telling you to practice your lyre, or learn the
lines for the play. But you wouldn't ... always off playing with the horses down the
stables. What a waste.
Now you are a soldier ... rowing a Trireme to Sicily. I hope they put you on the top
deck, the smell is not too bad there. You could have been a great scholar, you had the
brains. Take care. Remember the story of Theseus that I taught you. Theseus was
brave and a good fighter, but he was also wise ... he knew how to look after himself
.... remember the thread?
Stay in the centre ... hold your shield tight. For the honour of Athens! Death to
Sparta!!

I told you he was no good. You'll remember that night when all the statues to Hermes
were broken or damaged? It was your beloved Alcibiades and his friends who did it!!
They went after the fleet to arrest him and bring him back to Athens for trial. Imagine
it! Arresting the General leading his men into war just for wrecking a few old statues.
News has just reached us. Alcibiades has escaped ... dived over the side of the ship
with that little dog of his and swam to shore. Rumour has it that he has fled to .....
SPARTA of all places. He knows our plans of attack. I am afraid that disaster is
coming.
Beware, there are soldiers in the streets. Athens has been betrayed. Hide my old
friend, take flight ... we are in grave danger.

Woe and three times more woe. Your Grandfather Grampus is no more. You must be
brave. Try not to cry, he was very ancient. He was betrayed by your father, Poliphus. The
soldiers were looking for him, they were looking for all the friends of the traitor Alcibiades.
They had searched all over Athens for Grampus. Poliphus knew where he was ... hiding in
a cave behind Apian's beehives. He led the soldiers to the cave and stood by while the
soldiers put a swift end to Grampus.
I don't know what to think. My husband betraying his father. There is danger everywhere.
Remember, your husband, Diomedes, was a friend of Alcibiades too.
I think you must run Carintha ... run far away ... and soon.

To Mother
I didn't recognise him at first... a ragged sailor with a tangled beard. The face I didn't
know, but that voice I would recognise anywhere. It was brother Poliphus.
"They destroyed our fleet with fire ships", he said. "We had no way home."
He collapsed at my feet. As I cradled his head he told of trying to cross the swamps ...
no clean water ... disease ... the Sicilians attacking all the time. Then they saw a river.
Water at last. The whole army, or what was left of it, ran for the river ... the Sicilians
were waiting for them ... cut them down ... only a handful escaped .....
Poor Poliphus, he was crying when they led him away. Diomedes will look after him now.
He will recover Mother. He will see you soon.

To my Father
I sit here on the top deck of Trireme 26, oar 17. I can see Sicily on the horizon. The men
say that Alcibiades has fled to Sparta. Our plans have been discovered. I just can't believe
that my good friend, or who I thought was my good friend, would betray us.
Demosthenes says that we attack Syracuse tomorrow. The city is well defended and we
will need all our courage and skill.
I do not feel ready for this fight. I should have taken notice of my lessons and learned to
play the lyre well, then I would not have finished up here as a soldier on this stinking
vessel. If I should die tomorrow take care of the horses. Alcibiades will have need of them
should he ever return.

Alcibiades here...I came up
with this brilliant idea to
defeat Sparta. They gave
me ships and men and put
me in charge. Unfortunately
I got a little drunk the night
before we were due to sail
to Sicily and my friends and

I wrecked all the 'Hermes' statues that we
could find in the city. Next day we set sail
... do you know what, they sent a ship
after me ... ME the General.

They arrested me and were trying to take
me back to stand trial in Athens for my bit of
vandalism. No-way!! I jumped overboard
with Hermes and swam to freedom.
So now I am here in Sparta. They were sure
glad to see me... especially when I told
them the Athenian battle plan. I think I
arranged a nice little massacre there.

Act 4
Tragedy?
The year is 404 BC. The war has rumbled on
from battle to battle. Alcibiades has done his
best to complicate matters by changing
sides yet again and even bringing the
Persians into the war. In 405 BC the Spartan
fleet defeated the Athenians at the
Aegospotami River. They then invaded Attica
itself and after a short struggle forced
Athens to surrender.
Our families have come a long way since
430 BC.

Sparcus' family are victorious, but are they
happy and glorious?

Poliphus and his family are defeated. How
will they fare under Spartan rule?

It was a glorious battle. We were in pursuit of the Athenian fleet. The Athenians put in
at the Aegospotami River to gather fresh water and supplies. We surprised them while
most of the sailors were ashore.
We destroyed nearly 180 ships. Our Spartan ships survived the battle in good shape.
We invaded Attica in 404. After a short battle, we forced Athens was to surrender.
We demanded the destruction of the walls around the port of Piraeus, as well as the
Long Walls running from Athens to the port. We made the citizens of Athens to pull
them down themselves.
Sparta is all powerful. I Sparcus am Spartan. I look forward to promotion soon.

I've paid the ferryman. The coin that they put under my tongue was just enough.
I cross over the River Styx to enter the underworld.
Will I enter the Fields of Elysium or suffer long in Tartarus?
You must judge me as a Spartan as I drink the waters of Lethe.

All through the years Polonia has kept her love for the Helot, Pyramus a well guarded
secret. They meet often ... and secretly.
Poliphus has ordered the Police to arrest Pyramus. He is becoming too revolting ... he is
stirring up great trouble among the slaves.

Iolanda is 16 now. She is happy. I'm glad of that.
My mind is troubled. I regret what I did to Patronus. Now I must make up for it. We
Spartans care nothing for the Arts ... we care not for fine buildings, we do little writing.
But Marblus is here from Athens. I have asked him to carve a statue in honour of
Patronus. He was a great soldier, a member of the Ephorate no less ... he was a great
Spartan. May all the world in time to come remember him and his great deeds.
... and forget how he met his end at my hand.
I'll go and call on Maricus and Assena, get them to come and watch Marblus at work. I
shall take my secrets to the grave with me.

I've gone! I was 28 when I went, which was incredible. I must have been the most
Ancient Greek dog ever. I think I will be missed. There's only one problem. I've forgotten
to bring Hermes with me. I asked Charon if I could go back to get him. Charon just
pointed to a huge 3 headed dog with the tail of a dragon. Cerebus was its name. Its job
is to stand at the entrance to the underworld to stop the dead getting out again. He
wouldn't let me past ... that must mean I'm dead. Charon says that I am a 'dead cert'
for the Fields of Elysium. He's going to let me wait for Hermes across the other side
before I have to drink the waters of forgetfulness. He's a nice man ... a very nice man.

They have gone now. True, good Spartans. We Spartans do not write.
How will history remember them?
Remember...Patronus the Great. Warrior supreme, member of the Ephorate ... always did
his duty... no matter of the cost. Died with a glass of wine in his hand. Remember...
Polonia, a true Spartan daughter. Gave her life to the nation, killed the dangerous Helot,
Pyramus. Remember...Zeus, my dear dog. All those long years outside the walls of
Athens...always by my side.
Now I must return to Athens. We are victorious. We must rid them of this silly Democracy
that they have. I must chose 30 leading citizens. They will be TYRANTS. They will rule
in Sparta's name . As long as they keep order they can do whatever they like. Lie,
cheat, steal, kill ... a tryanny. Nice!! Then I can retire to Samos.

We have surrendered to the Spartans at last. We fight no more. The walls have been
torn down.
I have gone back to my studies. Alatus would be proud of me.
I am troubled over this simple little diagram. I came across it the other day in a book
to Pythagoras of Samos.
I understand it not.
I can sit and think now. the horrors of Syracuse are gone from my mind.
May the peace last.

I came to a sticky end. I was betrayed. Poliphus will make a good Tyrant.
So I crossed over the Styx and drank of the River Lethe, the river of forgetting. Now
here I am wandering around the Fields of Elysium.
I met this old man. Charming fellow ... couldn't remember what his name was. Well
neither can I, so that doesn't matter. I call him Attila and he calls me Ghengis. We
are great friends. Every now and then we meet up with this chap called Bacchus and
his friend Pan and go partying.
I must say it's very nice here. There's no fighting, no hardship, no hunger ... just lots
of grapes and horns of plenty. This is the life for me!!
That old lady over there looks strangely familiar!

Diomedes has been a good husband to me. Why on earth he wants to go all the way
to Phrygia to visit that horrible Alcibiades I don't know. I'll take little Narcis to stay with
mother until he returns.
Narcis misses her Grandfather. I hope he got across the Styx alright.
No-one knows that I am with child again. For Narcis I decorated the doorway of the
house with a wreath of wool. Diomedes was disappointed. This time I hope that I can
use the wreath of Olives.
Somehow, I don't think things will turn out as I'd like. I wish Daddy would stop being
a tyrant.

It's come true. The Oracle said that I'd meet a tall, dark, handsome stranger. I wonder
who he is?
These two little doggies are such fun ... so very friendly. I'm glad that I'm here in the
Fields of Elysium. There are no sides, no cities ... just one big happy family.
There's two old men over there eating grapes and sipping wine with a cloven hoofed
creature playing on a flute. One of them looks just like someone I once knew.

I'll go and live with my dear son Poliphus now. My husband has become a Tyrant. He has
no time for me now. He spends his time plotting the assassination of his enemies ... they
spend all their time plotting the assassination of THEIR enemies ... and so it goes on.
Perhaps one day they will realise that Democracy was quite a good idea.
I'm really pleased with my son. He has become a great scholar. All of Athens is talking
about him. If only he could understand the hippopotamus in the triangle!!
It's not much fun for a woman. It's a good job I still have my dowery to fall back if my
husband should fall victim of one of the other 29 fools who are trying to run our city.

I was wrong. Democracy is a waste of time. It has only brought us defeat at Sparta's
hand. No more stones in pots.
I will listen to this Sparcus. I will co-operate with Sparta. I will help rule in their name ...
1 and 29 others. We are to be TYRANTS ... we can rule with whatever force we decide
that we need. I will make Athens great again. Alcibiades will be my first little bit of
tyranny. Any one who resists will be ....

The Athenians didn't trust him. The Spartans
didn't trust him.
There seemed to be only one thing that they
could do!!
Alcibiades was assassinated in 404 BC by the
Persian Governor, Pharnabazus.
He was well paid ... by the Spartans and the
Athenians.
