BACKGROUND
The city has been overrun by thugs. Law and order are breaking down, and
citizens are afraid to leave their houses.
No-one knows where the thugs are coming from, or how many there are.
There is only one thing for it - you decide to get to the bottom of this, destroy
the gang, and save the city.
You put on your gloves and...

Back kick - this move will knock over anyone immediately behind you,
doing medium damage in the process. Ideal for buying yourself some
time.

CONTROLS (combat, detailed)

Combo type S - rapid attacks. Although it is not as powerful as an X type
combo, you are unlikely to be countered.

S

Decorer - this attack costs gavD a little health, but is extremely
powerful. It's hard to land, so time it carefully...

D

Dodge - duck around an attack. This needs split-second timing, but if you
master this technique you will be very hard to defeat!

Z

Combo type X - this is the most powerful combo, but leaves you open to
counter attacks...

X

Taunt - sometimes, you just gotta lay the verbal smackdown!
If you do this whilst fighting enemies, you will be awarded bonus points!

TIPS:
1. Perform combos by repeatedly bashing (S) or (X).
2. (S) combos are faster than (X) combos, so you have less chance of getting
counterattacked. (X) combos are stronger than (S) combos.
2. If you do a 4-hit combo, you can quickly hit the back kick key (A) to perform
a back kick without putting your leg down - great when you're surrounded!
3. When the arrow appears telling you to "GO!", it's a good idea to walk left a
bit first, otherwise you might get hit by enemies before you see them!
4. The back kick knocks enemies off their feet immediately, but is not as
powerful as a 4-hit combo, so weigh up whether you have time to turn round
and really let them have it.
5. Using the special attack (D) drains 5% of your energy.
6. Medical kits restore 10% of your energy. Walk over them to pick them up.

gang menace. His devastating Decorer attack can disable all but
the strongest of fighters - if he can make it connect...

Style: Bare knuckle boxing

The major is a devastating fighter. He doesn't walk very
quickly, but his flurries of punches are to be feared. His
boxing style is a street-boxing style developed in the 1700s
and is still effective today.

Little is known about this mysterious fighter, save for the fact
that his unorthodox attacks are more effective than you would
suppose!

This arrogant thug carries a shovel, which he uses to
devastating effect. Beware his lethal overhead hit.

This ninjitsu expert relies on speed and surprise. TDNX is so fast
it's hard to anticipate his actions. He seems to act as a front-line
fighter to soften up opposition.

Style: Drunken brawling
Movement speed: Very slow
Power: High
Attack speed: Very slow
Stamina: Very high
This behemoth is slow and sluggish. Unfortunately, he is so
drunk that he seldom realises that he has been defeated and
gets back to his feet regardless. He can take an enormous amount of
punishment and has a powerful, if easily dodgeable, haymaker.

BAD GUY: Tony Chico
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 191lb
Style: Boxing
Movement speed: Very fast
Power: Medium
Attack speed: Very fast
Stamina: Low
A fast fighter, Tony Chico gets in and throws the jabs to keep people
reeling until one of the big guns, like Major Look or The Shoveller,
can get in close for the K.O. If it comes down to it, though, Chico
has a hugely damaging uppercut that can knock a man off his feet.

A most uncommon fighter, the Chav appears to use a pair
of spatulas to inflict damage upon her opponents.

Bad Sensei was once a Tai Chi instructor, but was exposed as a fraud.
His fighting style has become corrupted, swapping the grace and
fluidity of Tai Chi for a broken bottle and a bad attitude.

Double Dragon (Taito, 1987)
Double Dragon was mindblowing to a then 6 year old gavD. "Wow, it's
got energy bars and weapons and everything!" I was heard to
exclaim. As a BBC user, I envied my friends with C64s and Speccys
who could play the arcade experience in their homes.
The best feature of Double Dragon was the 2 player feature, which
unfortunately would be impractical in a Flash game such as this one.
Their had been previous scrolling beat 'em ups (Yie Ar Kung Fu,
Renegade), but this was the killer app.

Yie Ar Kung Fu II (Taito, 1986)
I had this on the BBC - it was a right-to-left scrolling beat 'em up,
at the end of each level was a boss. Its predecessor is, for my money,
the better game, but is not a scrolling beat 'em up.
This game does have a healthy dash of humour, which I think every
game needs at some point.
I tried to make everyone's fighting style as different as possible in
TTTS. In YAKF, characters use swords, fans, staffs and their bare
hands, and I think this diversity really enhances the game.

Final Fight (Capcom, 1989)
The huge sprites and colourful characters really set this game
above its predecessors.
The enormous boss characters such as Sodom became the stuff
of legend, later appearing in the Streetfighter Alpha series.
The combo system in Final Fight was streets ahead of anything
that had come before it, although it remained simple to use.
Stu's character Guy Haggar is named after ninja Guy and
wrestler Mike Haggar from Final Fight.

Golden Axe (Sega, 1990)
You gotta love Golden Axe. The powerups, the magic, the
baddies, riding round on the back of monsters, kicking pixies
and fighting skeletons... It ruled!
One of my early games, 7 Seas of Rage, featured a weapon
that was similar to Gilius Thunderhead's axe.

Streets of Rage (Sega, 1991)
This is my favourite scrolling beat 'em up of all time - it was the
reason I asked for a Megadrive for Christmas one year!
This is the game that made me realise the importance of good
music in a game - those funky jazzy tunes really gave the game
a lift. This is why I contacted VWF, Medusa Rock and Triflesky,
who are three of the finest artists in the UK.
My red gloves in the game are a tribute to Axel, and I've named
Ben's character Axel Blaze after two of the fighters from SOR.

Dragon Ninja (Imagine, 1988)
This was one of the first Amiga games I played. I remember it
with extreme fondness. Hordes of ninja came steaming in, and
you had to fight back. Although it had limited moves, it was a lot
of fun, and very stylishly done.
You could fight on the back of TRAFFIC! Check that out!
Dave's character (TurboDeathNinjaX) uses nunchaku, which was
a weapon you could grab in Dragon Ninja.
Also known as Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja.

Tekken 2: Tekken Force mode (Namco, 1995)
Appearing on the console versions only, Tekken Force mode is an
old-school left to right scrolling beat 'em up. Tekken Force re-
appeared in the phenomenally underrated Tekken 4, but this time
was in full 3D, which I usually consider to be somewhat confusing
for a game of this nature, although here Namco pulled it off perfectly.
My "decorer" move in Take to the Streets is somewhat
reminiscent of Paul's Phoenix Smasher (AKA Deathfist) - I
almost called the move a Deathfist but decided that the game
was violent enough without move names like this!

My next game will be a 1 on 1 beat 'em up. Graphics and animation are going to be
by professional animator Protein Chicken, and music by experienced composer/
performer Davey J.
We are collectively known as "Team Amoeba", and the game takes place within
worlds within amoebas which float in, erm, not space, more just nothingness really.
So now you know!
