let's start out with a "happy face". I know it seems unnatural to most fluffy pony fans to have the face be "happy", but bear with me. |
From the simple happy face, we add triangles for the ears, and some fluff around the edges. Now it looks sorta like a cat. |
Time to de-catify! Add the top of the nose and the nostrils. There, now it's a bit horsier. Time to make the eyes more fluffy pony like, too. |
Draw the outline of the eyes around and - AGH! Dear god! That stare is horrifying! ... which is great if that's what you're going for, but if not ... |
...just draw the shape of the intended eyes around the dots you started with. Generally, unless they're startled or terrified, fluffy's irises should be about half the size of the eye. |
Then just fill in most of the eye black for the pupil - this conveniently covers up the dots you started with. |
Then just add the highlights (with erase tool on a PC, or eraser/whiteout on paper.) Add the main for finishing touch. Ta-daa! Fluffy pony. |
Of course, that's a boy fluffy. What do you do differently for a girl? Well, obviously, eyelashes... |
...and personally, I like to shrink the size of the snout a little bit, to make them cuter and more feminine. |
Let's do it again, this time from another angle. |
The main reason I recommend doing it this way is that this way, the first thing you are focusing on is the expression, more than making it look like a fluffy pony. Starting out from a "human" face makes their emotion clearer. |
And some last minute touch ups. Incidentally, having your fluffy in close up is a great opportunity to lazily dodge some of the biggest challenges in drawing ponies - namely, that their short stubby legs shouldn't be able to reach far enough to make a lot of human expressions. |
OK, let's draw a fluffy's entire body this time. As always, start with the head. |
Then, add a big round chubby circle... |
Some stumpy little legs with no details (or joints) whatsoever... |
Scribble a tail... |
....and add fluff all over. As you can see, if the head looks good, you can put next to NO effort into the body and have it come out looking like a fluffy pony. |
Personally, I like to think of the fluffies as "cartoon animals", and give their limbs some degree of stretch - and flexibility as to where their hips and shoulders ARE under all that fluff. This allows me to do more expressive poses that their limbs could not realistically do. |
alas, poor yorick! I nuuuuuuuu! him well! |
Obviously, if you want your drawing to look as nice as possible, you should "ink" it ... either by going over it in another layer in your computer paint program of choice, or, if you're working on paper, get some tracing paper or airmail paper from the dollar store and trace over it, leaving out the unnecessary/sketchy lines. |
Yeah, kinda like that. Keep calm and fluffy on! |
