RETURN TO THE LIES |
"The bigger the lie, the more people will believe it" is actually a very gross paraphrase of the original text. Literal translation: "All this was inspired by the principle - which is quite true in itself - that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes." |
At the time this statement was made (April 18, 1961), the Bay of Pigs invasion was already in motion. This invasion was funded and organized by the CIA, sending in more than a thousand Cuban exiles who had training, arms, and air support from the United States. A U.S. pilot was shot down in Cuba the next day and his body was held as evidence of U.S. involvement by Fidel Castro. |
Reagan and his administration orchestrated multiple shipments of anti- tank and other weapons to Iran to gain their influence in the release of hostages held by Hezbollah in Lebanon. The ensuing actions, including sale of weapons at a hefty markup, were in violation of legislation passed by Congress as it indirectly (but intentionally) led to the funding of the Contras. The entire fiasco is generally referred to as the Iran-Contra Affair. |
It's true that Hiroshima was a key target and military base. It's also possible that by using the atomic bomb, the United States hastened the conclusion of World War II and minimized further American bloodshed. However, Hiroshima's population was roughly 300,000 civilians to only 43,000 soldiers, nearly a seven-to-one ratio. The use of an atomic bomb could not be expected to minimize collateral damage to the population. |
Clinton visited Rwanda in 1998 and apologized on behalf of the United States, claiming ignorance of the systematic slaughter that had taken place there four years earlier, when hundreds of thousands of Tutsi people were killed. However, the incident had been covered live by the international press and publicized by human rights organizations. Later it was also shown that American intelligence officials were not only aware of the situation but had detailed infomation. Clinton's "relations" with Monica Lewinsky received considerably more publicity. He admitted later that he had a relationship with her that was "not appropriate" and "wrong." |
Bush issued the statement about Hussein despite having been informed by the CIA that the intelligence was most likely faulty. No evidence to back up this claim was found. No weapons of mass destruction were found, either. Bush's statement was made prematurely as no actual weapons were found, only two trailers that were assumed to be biological weapons labs. These trailers were determined to be unsuitable for such a purpose, and in fact were most likely used to manufacture hydrogen for filling weather balloons. |
