This is the info page for Flash #32832 |
I will show you how to animate different parts of stick figures using examples from my work, 'Tragedy with a Rock.' |
Also, it would be much easier to animate ANYTHING if you had a Wacom pen and tablet set. Click on the image for the website. You can order them from Amazon.com also, but they are expensive. |
This image shows the onion skin button. It allows you to see frames before and after the frame you are currently in. |
This is the onion skin button. To the right you can see 3 frames behind, and 3 frames ahead of the current frame. |
This little dot allows you to change how many frames you can see through. |
The cartoon I'm showing you examples from was made at 12 frames per second. To change that, go to Modify-->Movie. This brings up the Movie properties window where you can change the size and frame rate of the movie you are making. Hit okay after you change your settings to apply them. |
Okay, I think that's most of the basics for what I do. Now I grab the brush tool, set it to one of the two lowest sizes and draw my stick man. Its easiest to draw your stick man as if he was already walking. Again, these are screenshots of my cartoon Tragedy With a Rock. Below are the 5 frames I drew for my walking loop. |
Right now we'll just focus on moving the legs, arms will come later. |
Here are those same 5 frames viewed with Onion Skinning turned on. |
Now I'll draw some legs for you and animate them in this tutorial to show you how I do it. I use the brush tool set to pressure ON, which if you don't have a pen/tablet, dont worry. Then I draw my stick man. I'll just do legs and a 'body' right now so you wont get distracted. Click next to cycle through my drawings to see how much I change them to make the next picture. I'll show when a foot is on the ground by making it green, in the air by coloring it red. |
By clicking NEXT, you will advance one frame at a time to see how the legs move. Click back to go backwards one at a time to see them move. Keep clicking NEXT to get to the next section. |
Here's an onion skinned version of those frames. Notice how the green feet always stay in the same spot while the red feet are the ones that move. If the green foot moves, it looks like he is skating instead of walking, and it loooks unnatural. |
If you click next on this page, I will show you what those legs look like in motion. It will loop on itself until you click back or next again. This is to show you how the legs look in motion, and how the green foot always stays in one spot. I'd also like to note, that I only drew 6 different frames and the animation of the walking is 25 frames long. I just copy and past the frames, then move the body until the green feet match up. This saves lots of time and effort. I recommend you do this too. also, Jonagold apples are really tasty. Eat one today!! |
Now, even though this is made using stick figures, it should be able to help people who can draw and animate people too if you are having trouble with walking. A good tip is to look at yourself in a mirror or just look down at your feet and observe yourself walking when doing this, that's how I did it. Now we'll move on to arm swinging. |
I'll use the same legs used in the previous section to show how to animate arm swinging. Both of the feet will be colored in black this time, because thats the way I usually draw my stick figure feet. The arms I will draw in blue to distinguish from the body, then I will show you the animation with them in black to show how it looks. |
Also, some anatomy tips. The elbow of the stick man should be a little below the halfway point of his torso, and his hand should hang a little below his crotch. For you dirty minded folks, thats just the place where his legs come together and join his torso. |
A good point to remember is that each arm should point in the direction of the opposite foot. I.E.: the left arm should always be pointing towards the right foot. If the right foot is in front of the body, so should the left arm. If the right foot is behind the body, so should left arm too. |
Now, when you click NEXT, I will show you the stick man in motion, walking, swinging his arms, and with a head. You can make your own heads, they aren't that hard. Use eyes and a mouth because noses look dumb on stick men. |
Whelp, that's my tutorial on how to make walking and arm swinging. I hope that helped you a bit. If you have any more questions email me at: |
