Character Design. |
Well If you saw the first tutorial you know how to make a stick man... Now I'm going to explain the finer points of making a more detailed character. This can be pretty confusing and frustrating in Flash... but this tutorial is hereto help you out. Once again PLANNING IS THE KEY... No one likes to hear that but it's true... do the hard work first and everything else will fall into place and animation can be... FUN! |

Meet Divit! |
Meet Divit! |
Divit is one of the characters in an animation I'm working on called SHORT BUS. I took the time to design him so he could be animated easily... This saves me having to redraw him every time he moves around. Hold your mouse over Divit and you will see how he is split into 8 parts. EACH PART IS ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL. So they can be animated all at once... ALSO: in an animation Divit is his own symbol so I do NOT have the 8 layers on my main timeline. This is VERY hard to manage but with practice you can do it too. For now I'm going to explain how he is made and why it is important to do this. Moving on... |

WHY SO MANY PARTS? |
WHY SO MANY PARTS? |
The reason I use so many parts is so that I have a FREE RANGE OF MOTION without having to put in more drawings. By breaking your characters up into small pieces you can rotate each piece independently... Be Sure to put your character's parts on different levels so they can be motion tweened. If all your parts are on one level this technique will not work... Don't say I didn't warn ya. You will run into a few problems using this system of course but they are EASILY corrected with an extra keyframe or two... More on that later. The good thing about doing this is you can make many different animation LOOPS or CYCLES... you can make your character walk in place and move them around the screen... this comes in handy when you are makeing multiples of a character and want several of them on screen at one time. To see what kind of motion can be obtained in about 4 min worth of work... hold your mouse over Divit and he will show you... Click the next page button to proceed... |

IMPORTANT STUFF! |
IMPORTANT STUFF! |
When you are designing your character be sure to edit your symbols AFTER you make them into symbols... If you look to the right you will notice the small crosses on the two parts of the arm... THESE ARE THE ROTATION POINTS FOR THOSE PIECES!!! This is VERY IMPORTANT TO GET RIGHT!!! Now I'm not going to say it's important and not give you examples. Hold your mouse over the different ARMS and ARM pieces on this Page to see correct and incorrect rotation and what can happen if things arn't set up correctly... This is the place where I have made the most mistakes in my animations... So pay attention here and get it right the first time... you will be alot happier if you take the time to do this right rather than compensate for something you could have had working correctly half way thorugh an animation. You know the drill click next to go on to the other stuff... |

What About His Legs? |
What About His Legs? |
As you might have noticed I haven't shown Divit's legs moving yet... Not to worry... That is handled here. Divits legs are animated differently from the rest of his body... They can be animated the same way if you break them apart but I like the smooth curve of his leg and I want to keep it looking like this witout a sharp break at the knee... So I have animated his legs by hand. Below you will see the different frames in a WALK CYCLE animation. Hold your mouse over the legs in the top right to see the frames over time. |
Slap It Together |
Slap It Together |
Now that we have all the pieces of a walk cycle the upper body and the legs animated lets see what it looks like when it's put together... |
