Animation, its what flash is all about. Sure you can program games with it (see the Script section) But for the most its a animation program. Here im gonna learn you the basics of flash animation. Click Next to Continue |
GOTO NEXT SUBJECT |
NEXT |
TWEENING |
First we are going to lean how to make a circle.. move from the left to the right side if the screen with tweening. Its really easy. |
First draw a circle. Select it, and drag it to the left side of the screen. Now goto the timeline (if you dont know what the timeline is see the pic below) We are going to insert a couple of frame, we need them to tween the circle. Select frame 30 in the timeline and press F5 ( or goto, insert and select insert frame) We now have 30 frames in our timeline. |
This is the timeline |
Now rightclick on your frames and select: Create motion tween. You now see the frames turn blue/purple. Goto frame 30 and rightclick on it. From the popup menu select: Insert Keyframe (or press F6) Now drag you circel from the left to the right side of the screen (make sure the 30th frame is still selected) |
before inserting a keyframe |
After inserting a keyframe |
Now the tweening is done. Goto frame 1 again and press enter to play it (or goto: Control, Test movie. To test the movie) You should see this: |
Download a example file here |
Download a example file here |
If you think the animation of the circle isn't smooth enough. You can fix that by changing the fps (frames per second) of the movie. Do that like this: Goto: Modify, Document. Then type the fps you want were it says Frame rate. |
First goto modify and select Document |
Then type the fps here |
Now you learned how to make a simple tween. You can now use tweens to make more complicated movement. You do that by make different parts of a body (for example a madness character) on different layers. I will now explain how it works. |
We are going to make a simple body with two hands that we are gonna animate. First open a new document (File, new) First rightclick were it says layer 1. And select insert layer. Now you have 2 layers. Now do it one more time. So you have 3 layers. |
insert a layer like this |
You should see this when you added 2 new layers. |
Now select frame one of the layer that is in the middle (probably layer 2) And draw a circle in it. If you've done that. Select frame 1 in the upper layer and draw a smaller circle there. Also draw a small circle in the lowest layer. You now have something that looks like a basic character: |
Now insert a few frames in all the layers (like 50 frames or something) And insert a tween in all the layers. Now goto frame 10 and move one of the hands of your character (the hands are the small circles, but your probably already knew that) and move it, for example, up. Do the same thing with the other hand. Now go a few frames forward and move the hands again. Just do that a couple of times. |
Now go back to frame 1 again and press enter. You character should now movie his hands. This is mine: |
Things that could go wrong are: You put everything on the same layer. Then you cant movie everything apart form eachother.... Still dont understand? |
This all looks really basic. But this way you can also animate more detail characters. Like this madness thing i made below. And just imagine... You can now also do that! |
OOPS! I almost forgot! There is still something about tweening you need to know. Thats Motion Guide. With a normal tween you can only make something movie straight. But with a motion guide, you can also make somethink go round. For example. |
You do a motion guide like this: Rightclick on your layer, and click: Insert motion guide. Now draw a line in it. You dont have to make it straight. Bend it if you like. Now goto your normal layer again and draw a circle. Add some frames in both the normal layer as the motion guide and make a tween. Now drag your circel to the start of the line in your motion guide. Make sure Snap to objects is on ( press: Control, Shift and / at the the time) Now the circle snaps to the line. Now goto the last frame and drag your circle to the end of the line. Now goto frame 1 and play it. It should look like this: |
If you didnt understand it for some reason. Here is a screen: |
Still dont get it? |
Now lets start our second subject. Shapetweening. Its just like normal tweening. But now you dont tween motion, but the shape or your drawings. Like this: |
First draw a circle. Now insert a few frames. And then insert a empty keyframe in the last frame (press F7) Now draw a square in that frame. |
Now goto properties. You there a menu with the text Tween, before it. You can choose from two things. Motion tween (what we did in the last subject) and Shape tween. Select shape tween. Now play your animation and see what happens. |
Your timeline should look like this |
If its was correct you should have seen this: |
You now did a basic shape tween. But if you make more compley drawing it wont always morph correct. It might looks like this: |
Doesn't look good. Doesn't it? Well. I will now explain you how you can fix that (it wont work if your drawings have really a lot of detail) |
For things like that we have a thing called shapehints. You can choose which part of the drawing you want to go where. Goto frame one and press Control, Shift H, to add a shapehint. Put it somewere in the drawing (make sure Snap to objects is anabled, Do that by pressing Control, shift / ) Now goto the last frame (where you put your other drawing) and put the hint on the place you want the hint (the place where you put the first hint) to go (it has to turn green then, if not, your snap to objects isn't enabled). Now Goto frame one and test your movie. Still not good? Add more hints. Or replace the hints. Do that untill it looks good. |
Look! Now my morph does work! |
Still dont get it? |
Well... Thats about everything there is to tell about tweening. I hope this helped you. Now go back to the menu and select something something you want to learn now. |
Audio. There is not really that much to tell about it. But audio still is one of the most important things of a flash. If the animation is superb, but the audio sucks. It wont get a too high score. It can also give the viewer certain emotions. It can make him feel happy, Sad (like in my Freedom (clay) movie) Angry. Etc.... Im now going to learn you how to import audio into flash. Tune down audio. What difference it makes if you set it from Event to stream ( will explain later what that is) Etc.... |
AUDIO |
To import a audio file. Do this: File, Import audio (or just press control R) Now select a file and import it. |
Now your audio file is imported into flash. If you want to let it play during your movie/game you have to put it into the timeline. You do that by going to your library and drag it from there to the timeline. (make sure a keyframe is inserted on the place were you want to start the audio) Or you can select a frame in the timeline, then goto properties, and then select the sound you want to play where it says sound. Now play the movie by pressing enter. You will now hear the sound. |
Now you know how to put audio in the timeline. But maybe you noticed it. The soundfile you imported keeps playing even if you stop the movie. Thats an event sound. This comes in handy if you have to use the same sound multiple times, or when you have to play a sound in a game or something. There also is another option. That is streaming. You use that if you want to make a sound play for a short time. Or if you want to sync your animation to your audio. You set the audio to stream by going to properties, Sync. Select Stream there. Now play the movie agian. And stop it halfway. You will see the audio also stops. |
Ok. Now we've done that. Next up. if you want to make a sound loop. Just goto properties. And type how many times you want to make it loop. |
Still one more thing about playing audio before we move on to audio optimization. Editing audio. Of course you can use a program like goldwave to cut parts out of your audio files. But you can also just use flash for it. Select a sound in the timeline, goto properties and click edit. Now drag this |
To The loeft or the right to shorten up the audio. In the bar in the middle you can see the frame the audio is currently on, but you can also set that to Time. You can also zoom in and zoom out. You do that here. |
Ok. Now onto audio optimization. This is really important. You know those movie on NG that are really short but still 5 mb? Thats because the audio isnt optimized. We optimize hte audio like this. Goto your library (Windows, library) and rightclick on the file you want to optimize and select Properties. There you see this: |
There select what kind of compression you want to use (i mostly use mp3, that makes it the smallest) |
Once you've odne that select the bit rate of the audio. DONT MAKE IT HIGHER THE 48kbps! That will make the file still to big. I mostly use 16 kbps But then you dont have that good quality. |
Well... Thats about everything there is to tell about audio... At least i cant think of anything more. But if you need some sounnd effect. Here are a few site that profide you with free sounds. |

Frame by Frame |
Frame by Frame. It really is the most simple animation. But at the same time. It is the most difficult thing to do. Don't understand it? I will explain. With fbf (frame by frame) animation you just redraw the entire picture each time. That takes loads of time. But its looks really cool (if everything is drawn good). I will now explain how to do fbf animation. |
The most simple type of fbf animation are sticks. We will first practise with them. Select frame 1 on a layer in your timeline and insert a few keyframes (press F6) Now select frame 1 again and draw a stick. |
Now goto frame 2 and select union skinning (this makes you see in the last frame(s) |
Now make sure you can only see in the last frame by draging this |
Untill you can only see one frame back. Now Draw a new stick on the second frame. That is just slightly different from the first one. Now select frame 3. Draw a stick again. etc.. etc.... |
Now you've drawn a simple stick animation. Goto frame 1and play it. See if it runs ok, if not. Make some changes about it. Here is mine: |
If you want a stick running on a background. Dont draw the background in each frame. Just make the background on another layer and put the stick animation inm a new one. And remember. Never make the fps too high with fbf. I advice a framerate of 20 for sticks. Well... Thats about stick animation. Now onto REAL fbf animation. Im not really that amazing at drawing. So i will show it with solid sticks (you might know them from my Solidstick Fight series) |
Normal fbf is really the same as animating stick with fbf. But there are a few trick that make the animation looks better. I will teach you some i know. |
First of. If you want a fast movement. Its better to make it leaving a trace (fadeing... whatever) then just draw the whole animation. Here is an example. |
Well.... Tats about everything there is to tell about fbf animation. Now lets move on to the next subject. |
Here you learn how to make special effects in flash. Because what is a flash without special effects? I will explain how to make a few nice effect here. |
Special Effects |
First im gonna learn you how to ajust the brightness, Aplha, Tint. Etc... Of an object. First draw a object. Doesnt matter what it looks like. Now make it into a graphic file, button, Movieclip, tween. doesnt matter. Now select it. Goto properties. and select Alpha, Brightness, Tint. Whatever. And set it to whatever you like (like 50% alpha or something). .... thats it! |
Now im gonna learn you how to mask a layer. I can be really usefull (at least... thats what they say.. i never even used masking) What masking does is that you can only see true the mask layer on places where you've drawn something. you can make things like this: |
You mask somthing like this: First insert a new layer (you should know how to do that by now, if not, check back in the tweening section) Now draw somethign in the lower layer. Then goto the upper layer again and rightclick on it and select Mask. |
Now unlock both the layers and draw a circel on the mask layer. Now insert a few frames and tween the circel in the mask layer from the left to the right (for example) Now test your movie (Control, Test) You now only see the small circel when it passes the big circel. |
Ok... Now you know how to do masking... Now lets thing of another effect to learn you.... I know! Radial gradients! Goto window, Color mixer and select radial from the pop up menu. |
Now se;ect two colors here. |
If you now draw a circel or something, you see this as a the color. |
You can also make the outside (or inside.. or whatever) see trough by setting the alpha to 0%. |
Now. How to make a good looking explosion. I first didnt want to add this part. But i read a couple of reviews for other tutorials and people seemed to like to know how to make a good looking explosion. I will try the explain it. Of course making a good explosion also depends on how good the animator is. But i will try to explain a few things. |
FRAME BY FRAME EXPLOSION |
Tweened Explosion |
There are 2 ways of making a explosion. Il first explain a FBF one. First of. Make a MC (movie clip) Do that by clicking: Insert, New symbol. And then select movieclip. Now insert a few keyframes (press F6) Now take a look at Pic You see that this explosion is totaly FBF drawn. This is the best to use if a grenade explodes or something like that. Use brush size 1 or 2 to draw the explosion. |
(Man...I just know people are now going to use this in their movies.... lol) |
If you made the explosion MC go back to the scene you were animating and drag the explosion MC from your library to the stage (you open the library like this: Window, Library) |
Now the second type of explosion. This one is the best for exploding spaceships in a game or something. This explosion is partly tweened. Make a few layer. Add circels in it or something. Tween them bigger and set the alpha to 0% at the end so that at the end you cant see it anymore. Now draw a FBF explosion in a few keyframes, Also make some white lines. Thats it. If you dont get what im saying now (which i will understand) Take a look at the thingy below: |
Remember. Its best to make a empty keyframe at the end of the explosion with a stop action in it. Because if you dont do that, the explosion will repeat, and repeat etc... If you explosion ins for example 5 frames long, you can also just insert 5 frames of explosion MC in your movie. But a stop action is better. You insert a stop action like this: click on actions (its above properties) and double click on stop (after opening movie control). Thats it! |
The action you added appairs there. |
Ok... That was the explosion part... Now what? Erm... What about... how to make realistic blood? Yeah! Ok, here it goes.... |
First of. If you reall want to make good looking blood, do not make the bloos effect too big! Like this: |
Because that just... Sucks! Also best use more then one color red. That will just look better. Also dont use the basic red color. Always use a darker red (not too dark) and make the middle even darker. |
Better do it like this: (use brush size 1 ofr this) |
Ok. That was that for non moving blood. Now for a blood explosion (if you know what i mean) Start making a new MC (movie clip) Insert a few keyframes and start drawing. Look at the thingy below to see how to do it: |
Now on to animating blood effects. That really easy. If you want to make a bit of blood flying trough the air, just draw it frame by frame like this: |
You dont really have to use two colors of blood for this. it does look better. But just takes more time. |
Now... If you want to make a (sort of) blood explosion. Just draw if fbf like this: |
Well... dont know anything more to tell about special effects. This should do the trick if you make a movie/game. Now lets move on to the next subject. |
Ok, now onto action scipt. I will just teach you a few simple script codes that will let you make a simple game, Make a cursor. Etc..... |
Action Script |
Ok... Before we start with the harder kinds of script (making a game etc...) you first need to know some basic stuf. Like a script to make your movie/game stop, goto another frame, stopallsounds. Etc.... These scripts are really easy. So we go trough it fast. |
Ok.. If you want a movie to stop on a certain frame (if you want a text window to stay so someone can read it or something) Just put a stop action in the frame you want your movie to stop. Just select the frame you want your movie to stop, then goto actions, then movie control, and then dubble click on stop. Thats it. |
stop (); |
Now im gonna teach you a code that makes your movie/game goto a certain frame. Select the frame you want to put your action in and goto actions. Now select actions, then movie control and dubble click on Goto. You can type the frame where it says frame and select if you want it to gotoandstop or gotoandplay. |
There are more variatons on this script. Just check all the menus there. Like which scene. Or goto frame label. Just experiment with it yourself. |
Now i am going to teach you a script on how you have to stop all sounds in your movie. Normally when you stream audio. YOu can just make it stop by stopping inserting frames. But with event audio its different. That just keeps playing if you stop inserting frame. Just select the frame you want the audio to stop, goto actions, movie control and then dubble click on Stopallsounds. Thats it! |
Ok. Now last basic thingy.... really simple. If you have a movie that isn't playng (when you inserted a stop action or something) and you want it to go and play again. Just make a button and put a play action in it. The movie will then start playing again. |
Im now going to explain to you have to make a simple game where you fly a spaceship, and if you hit the enemy, you will explode. This already us explained in Flashforbeginners:SCRIPT. So if you dont understand how to do it here. Go watch that. |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Arial Black" SIZE="16" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view.php?id=144223"><B>Goto Flashforbeginners: Script by clicking here.</B></A></FONT></P> |
You are still here? Good, i will try to explain how to make a gmae like that. First of. Draw a spaceship (or a circel, or whatever) and make it into a Movieclip (press F8) Now give it the instance name SPACESHIP (Goto properties and type SPACESHIP where it says Instance name). |
Note: The instance name makes you specify certain objects in the game. |
Now open the action window. and paste this inside it: |
This makes your spaceship controlable. Note: YOu might have to change the rotation. Because that depends on your flash settings. |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Times New Roman" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000">onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (Key.isDown(Key.UP)) { _y -= 10; _rotation = 270; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (Key.isDown(Key.DOWN)) { _y -= -10; _rotation = 90; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) { _x -= 10; _rotation = 180; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) { _x -= -10; _rotation = 0; }}</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P> |
Now test you game (Control, test movie) Ik should look like this: (control it with the arrow keys) |
Does it work? If it doesnt |
Ok... so... now you got a controlable spaceship. Now its time to make a enemy. Just draw a enemy and give it the instance name of ENEMY. |
Now open the action window for the enemy and paste this inside it: |
This make the X and Y of the enemy (Horizontal is X Vertical is Y) goto the same place as the X and Y of the Player. It moves with a speed of 5. But you can change that by typing something else were it says 5. |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Arial Black" SIZE="9" COLOR="#000000">onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player._x > _x) { _x += 5; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player._x<_x) { _x -= 5; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player._y>_y) { _y += 5; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player._y<_y) { _y -= 5; }}</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P> |
Now test you game. It should look like this: |
If you want the enemy to run away from you. Just put this inside it instead of the other script. |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000">onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player2._x > _x) { _x -= 5; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player2._x<_x) { _x += 5; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player2._y>_y) { _y -= 5; }}onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (_root.player2._y<_y) { _y += 5; }}</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P> |
Now we are going to implent a Hittest in it. This is really the hardest part in the tutorial. Most people went wrong here in FLashforbeginners: SCRIPT. But with the example file im including now it should be no problem. Hittest is a code that makes something happens when a object hits a other object. For example: Your spaceship hits the enemy. Your spaceship explodes. |
First: Make a new MC and make a explosion inside it. Just make the explosion like i teached you in the special effects part. Now rightclick on your spaceship and press edit. |
Now make a new layer in it. And insert a few frames (the same amount of frame as you Explosion takes to fully play, if thats for example 15 frames, then enter 15 frames EXTRA, So you have a total of 16 frames). Now make a keyframe in frame 2 and insert you'r explosion MC there (goto your library and drag it to the stage) |
Now but a stop action in frame 1 (click on frame 1. Goto actions and dubbel click on stop) |
Now go back to the scene were Both the spaceship and the enemy were. Now put these actions in your SPACESHIP MC. |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Times New Roman" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000">onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (this.hitTest(_root.enemy)) { _root.SPACESHIP.Play(); }}</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P> |
This script makes you Spaceship MC play when it hits the Enemy MC. YOu then see the explosion. |
It should now look like this: |
Ok.... That was that for the controlable spaceship... Now we are going to make a counter. First. Amake a button (it goes the same as making a MC but now select button instead of Movieclip). I dont care what you call it. Just call it button or something. Make make a text block thingy. Make it so it can fit numbers like 999 or something. Type a 0 in it. Now goto properties. And change Static text to Dynamic text. |
Ok. Now you have done that we are going to give the textblock a instance name. NAme it COUNTER. |
Now go back to your button and put this in the action panel: |
on (release) { _root.COUNTER=number(_root.COUNTER)+1;} |
Try now testing it. And see what happens when you push the button. |
This is what it should look like: |
0 |
PRESS |
Btw. you can of course combine the hittest script with the counter to make a counter react when you hit the enemy. Just experiment! |
on (release) { _root.COUNTER=number(_root.COUNTER)+1;} |
If you change the + to something else you can also: |
*1 = Times 1 -1 = Minus 1 /1 = Devide with 1 |
Of course you can change the 1 to another number. |
Ok... Now i am going to teach you how to make a cursor. This is really simple. But it still is cool. Isnt it? Just take a look at your mouse now. ANd see what i mean. |
Ok. What we are first going to do is make a MC. Just draw a hand or something and convert it into a MC. You can also just animate the MC, it will still work. Now give you MC the instance name of CURSOR (you already should know by now how to do it, but i will just tell you once more) Goto properties and type CURSOR where it says instance name. |
Now open the action window for your MC and put this script inside it: |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="9" COLOR="#000000">onClipEvent (load) { startDrag ("_root.CURSOR", true); Mouse.hide();}</FONT></P> |
Now test your movie. It should work now. Note: if you want you cursor to change back to your normal mouse again only deleting the MC in a certain frame wont help. Also put this script on the frame you want you normal cursor to re-appear. |
Mouse.show(); |
Ok. Now the last script. How to make a drag and drop game. It's really simple. First draw something and then convert it into a button or a MC. Give it a instance name (Just call it box for now ok?) Now put this script in it and it should work. |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000">on (press) {</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000"> startDrag("box");</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000">}</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000">on (release) {</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000"> stopDrag();</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#000000">}</FONT></P><P ALIGN="LEFT"></P> |
Note: Remember that if you have more then one dragable object. Do not give them all the same instance name. NOt all box, but better: Box1, Box 2, Box3 etc.... If not your game wont work. |
This is what it should look like when its done: |
Well... that was that for the script part. Now lets move on to the next subject. |
Im gonna tell you how to make a sprite movie now. But i advice you to just take my Flashforbeginners:SPRITES tutorial. Because that one is easier to understand. |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="20" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view.php?id=143491">FLASHFORBEGINNERS:SPRITES</A></FONT></P> |
SPRITES |
You are still here? Right then... its your choise.... Ok. First get some sprites. Make sure that the sprites you have are sprites without a white box around them (there is a way to get rid of them, but then they just look too good) Some sites where you can find sprites without white boxes on them are: |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://tsgk.captainn.net/">http://tsgk.captainn.net/</A></FONT></P> |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="20" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://www.panelmonkey.org/">http://www.panelmonkey.org/</A></FONT></P> |
(some sprites here do have a white obx, but most of them dont) |
Ok... so now you have got some sprites without a white background (if they do have a white background, goto modify, select trace bitmap, set color Threshold and Minumum area to 1 and press ok. Remember, ONLY DO THIS IF THEY HAVE A WHITE BACKGROUND! ECAUSE YOUR SPRITES WILL LOOK REALLY BAD BY DOING THIS!) Ok. Make a new MC and import your spritesheet in it. Select the sheet and press control b. You can now cut parts out of the sheet. Now cut the part with the animation you like to use for your MC (select it and rightclick Cut or press control x), and delete the rest. |
Ok. So now you have cutout the animation you want. Now insert a few empty keyframes (as much as there are frames needed for your animation. Now paste the part of the sheet you cut ou (control v) Now drag the sprite's to the center of the MC and cut out everyspirte, but not the first frame. |
Cut this part out. |
Now goto the next frame, now select Onion skinning. |
As you can see. You can now see true the last couple of frame. Make sure you can only see true the last rame by dragging this so you can only see hte last frame. |
It should be like this now. |
Ok. NOw paste your sprites and again cut away the sprites, but leave the one on the left there. Place that one above the one in the first layer (which you can see because you anabled onion skinning). Now again goto next frame, cut sprites not hte one on the left... etc.. .etc... Untill you have completed the animation. Now go back to your normal scene. |
Your MC should now work. |
Ok. Now go back to your normal scene and drag you sprites into the stage. |
Now just add a background (on a lower layer) tween your sprite around the stage. and you have a sprite movie! I advice you to download the next example file. Because that will explain a bit more then the tutorial itself. YOu can also see there how you use multiple MC's etc.... |
Well... that was all there is to tell about sprites. I really advice beginners to make a sprite movie as their first work. And not a stick movie. Sprite movies score overall better then sticks. Note: I just know peopel are going to email me about this if i dont say this. But if you want to make sprites yourself. Just use animationshop (thats a sprite making program) You can also use paint and photoshop. But i advice Animationshop. Now lets move on to the next subject. |
This is the last subject. It includes thing like optimization. Ect.... |
EXTRA |
Ok... first.. how to optimize (compress) a movie/game. nothing is worse then a movie that is 5 mb.. and only is 20 seconds long... thats a 56k modem user's nightmare. Here im gonna explain how to make the filesize of your movie smaller. Ok. when you publish a movie goto File, publish settings. You now see this screen. |
Click on flash. |
You now see this screen, now make sure you set everything as i set it in this screenshot: |
Set it to the highest possible version. |
Do not chnage anything about this. |
This compresses the movie. |
This is to set the quality of the bitmap you used (for example sprites) bestset it to 50 or 60. |
This is to compress the audio. Enable override sound setting if you havent set the quality for each sound yourself. Dont make the quality of the audio lower then 16 kbps. |
If all the settings are ok just press publish. |
Ok. Now onto testing testing download performance. This is really handy. Because you can see how long your movie will take to load if someone is using (for example) a 56 K modem. First click: Control, Test movie. To test your movie (or press control, enter) |
Now click view, and anable bandwith profile and show streaming. |
You now see your movie load with a certain speed. You can change the download speed by clicking debug. |
Now just let your movie/game load and time it to see how long it takes. You can then tell the user in the preloader the download time or something. |
Ok. This was the last subject of this tutorial. I hope you learned a lot. Andi hope to see some good flash of you. Ciao! |

Nothing is worse then a movie with only the standard flash sounds (instant blam mostly) So here are a few sounds that might make your movie a bit better. btw. I have to give credit to www.stickslaughter.com Because these downloads come from them. |
No... Im not going to teach you how to make your own preloader.. as you were probably thinking.. No.. im going to teach you how to edit the NG preloader.. Thats much easier for beginners. And you can make amazing preloader out of it. First download the NG preloader |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Arial Black" SIZE="12" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://www.newgrounds.com/flash/NewgroundsPreLoader.fla" target = "_blank">HERE</A></FONT></P> |
PRELOADER |
Now open a new document and click: File, open as library. Now open the newgrounds preloader that way and drag it into your document. |
Now rightclick on your preloader and select edit. |
Now unlock all the layers. |
Delete the tank logo (select it and press delete) You can put in your own loago on the same place (for example) If you want to change the loading bar, just rightclick on it and press edit. Now select the white bar and press control B (Break apart) Or totaly delete it and draw a new one. This way you can change the entire preloader. |
Thats it! See how easy it is? I prefer this way above making my own preloader, much easier and time saving. |

ExTRA INFORMATION |
On NG, if you vote on a movie. You get experience. 2 experience per vote. If you voted on 5 entries you can deposit you experience. YOu can only deposit 10 experience a day. If you got enough experience you raise you level. First 9 levels you raise a level after 50 Exp. After that you cant really say how much you have to deposit to go to level 10 or higher... Because eacht time the user with the highest Exp. (Humantarget52) deposits exp. Everyone needs to deposit 1 exp more to raise a level. But i think to get from level 9 to 10 you now need around 650 exp. The user with the highest level also is the only person who can be level 30 (the highest) If people have the same amaunt of Exp. there then the person with the earliest signup date will be higher in the NG exp. Rankings. If you get to a higher level you will also get a higher voting power (how much you vote count, if your VP for example is 3 your vote counts for 3 normal votes) |
EXPERIENCE |
You can also set you're aura on ng. If you set it to light. Set it to light if you always vote high, even on Bad movies. Set it to Neutral if you always vote fair. Low on bad movies, and high on good movies. Set it to dark if you always vote low... Vote 0 on a really good game or movie or something... Just because you feel like it... Goto the next page ot see all different level + all different aura's. |

If a movie is still under judgement (marked light grey in the portal) You can get Blam or protection points. It works like this: If you think a movie sucks and you give it a 0 or a 1. And the movie gets deleted you get 1 blampoint. If a movie is good (acording to you) and you give it 2 or higher and it gets protected. YOu get 1 protection point. You can get certain levels with blamming and protecting. Blam and protection points will increase your voting power. |

Well.. that was that for Blamming/Protecting.. and... Blam and protect a lot! |
If you see a movie in the portal that is still under judgement. And you think it's stolen/Abusive/echild porn/Porn slideshow or in any other ways brakes the FAQ You can flag it. YOu do that by clicking on one of the following buttons: |
<P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="BankGothic Md BT" SIZE="12" COLOR="#FF0000"><A HREF="http://www.newgrounds.com/lit/portal_faq.html" target = "_blank">FAQ</A></FONT></P> |
By flagging something you earn whistle point. Not always. But if you flag something, the NG crew will check out the submission and if you were correct you will get a whistle point. IF you have enought points you whistle level wil raise. You can also report abusive reviews, if someones is going nuts or something.. Like: BLAM THIS FUCKING MOVIE! GO FUCK YOU MOTHER! Like that. YOu report a abusive review by clicking on this: |
You see this if you open the read review window. |
WHISTLE LEVELS |
This is a garbage whistle, you get this if you marked to many none faq braking movies/reviews. |
This is a normal whistle level, its the whistle level you start with. |
This is a bronze whistle level, you get it if you mark 1 or 2 reviews/movies correctly. |
This is a silver whistle level, mark like 10 reviews or reviews to get it. |
This is a gold whistle level. Its hard to get, mark like 30 reviews/movies correctly. |
This is a DIETY whistle level, just like the level 30 rank only one person at a time can have it, the person with the most whistle points. |
Well... That was all there is to tell about whistle levels... Now move on to the next subject. |
This is just a really short subject... Batting averadge. Its the averadge score someone has with his movies. There are certain rankings. A+: You have this ranking if you batting averadge 3.45 or higher, only good artists have this ranking. B+: You get this is your batting averadge is between 2.80 and 3.45. People with a B+ batting averadge are mostly good artists but are not the best of the best. C+: YOu get this ranking if your between 1.50 and 2.50. This arent really the best artists. But every now and then then have a good movie. D+: This are people who dont really care about people liking there movies. They just want to submit crap. you need a batting averadge between 0.50 and 1.50 F+: The lowest ranking. This are the people who just make a lot of acounts and post abusive stuff on them. THEY SUCK! You have a F+ ranking if you batting averadge is 0.50 or lower |
BATTING AVERADGE |
You get a batting averadge it you submitted 3 or more movies. Here is the top 5 of people with the highest batting averadge: NAME: BA BEST KNOWN FOR 1. James Farr 4.26 Xombie:Chapter 2 2. TFL 4.11 8 Bit Theater 1 3. Chluaid 4.10 Nightshift: A true story 4: BrunoBozzetto 4.10 (((( EUROPE & ITALY )))) 5. Legendary frog 4.08 FF Tribute: Choboco Mix |

Thats it for batting averadge. Now move on to the next subject. |
Ok... Another short subject. Bookmarking your faforite movies and artists. If you goto the page where you can view someones movie, beneath the voting panel there are two buttons. One to bookmark the movie as one of your faforite movies, and one to bookmark the artist as one of your favorite artists. |
If you bookmarked something you can change that by going to your NG gold acount and click on this: |
You can view user who have you bookmarked as theird faf, or one of you movies as their faf here. |

Here is some extra informatio you like to know. Newgrounds is created by the brother Tom and Wade fulp in December 1999. Since that day over 500.000 people have registered to NG. And Milions have visited it. It all started with some funny flashes like Teletubies and Scrotum. But now there are almost 200.000 submissions. Newgrounds, the problems of the future. Today! |
