~ Help ~ Because some pictures reduce in size quality when imported, it might be hard to see text. During the tutorial, if a picture has text too garbled to read, right-click and select the ZOOM IN function until you can see the text clearly. Use the hand to scroll around the picture. When you are finished, right-click and select 100% to return back for full view. |
Hello, and welcome to Sprites: Done Right! My name is Carbuncle! Don't let my small size fool you...I'm here to teach you today about the wonderful world of sprites! |
What are sprites you may ask? Well if you don't know now you might want to jot down some notes! |
Sprites are pixilated bitmap pictures commonly found in games. |
Take Megaman here...he is a classic example of an animated sprite. |
What I'll teach you today is how to grab sprites from a "sprite sheet", customize them to your needs, and even animate them! |
So are you ready? Just follow my simple instructions and pictures. Believe me, you'll do fine! |
It's best if you follow along with me. For those who are wondering, I'll be using Flash MX. Things may vary if you are using a different Flash version but it should be very simular. |
Begin by opening up Flash... |
Your screen should look something like this. To begin a new project select FILE > NEW and a blank stage should appear like above. |
From here we'll make our marvelous animation. The next step is to create our sprite movie clip! |
Let's start by importing our "sprite sheet". A sprite sheet is a big picture full of sprites performing all sorts of actions, ranging from walking to shooting. |
This is an example of a sprite sheet. The sheet includes numerous sprites from the NES classic Ninja Gaiden. In fact how about we use this in our project, shall we? |
To animate these lifeless and boring sprites, we need to add them to our project. This can be done with FILE > IMPORT or FILE > IMPORT TO LIBRARY |
For this project try importing the sheet to your library. If you're new to Flash this will give you a bit more experiancewith the library. |
From there wade through your hard drive and select the sprite sheet you wish to use. Like I said before, I'll just stick with my ninja sheet. |
Now that your sheet is tucked nicely in your library it's time to put good use to it. In order to do this we'll need to make a movie clip. On your tool bar select INSERT > NEW SYMBOL or just press Ctrl + F8 |
Since it's a good idea to get into the habit of naming your symbols (instead of leaving it as Symbol 1), give it a name. Since I'm using a ninja I'll just call it Ninja. Simple eh? |
Don't forget to select Movie Clip because your pretty little pixels will be doing much more in a bit. From there just press Ok. |
You should now have a new stage with a + sign in the center. This shall be our temporary stage to animate the sprites. |
Bring up your library (press Ctrl + L) and find your archived sheet. Click and drag it onto your stage. Your sheet should now look like mine above. |
Now we don't want our sprites boring and stationary, do we? Most certainly not! So in order to move these 2D creations we'll have to first have to break the sheet apart. |
Select your sheet. Handles and a boarder should appear around the sheet. Press Ctrl + B to break apart the sprites. Your sheet should be highlighted black like mine. |
From here, with the pointer still selected, highlight and drag off sprites that you would like to use. Just click and delete the rest... |
You should now have your desired sprites. I have chosen the three that show my my ninja running. |
Drag your sprites towards the center, at the + sign. Find the first sprite in moving sequence (or would like to use) and place it directly on the + sign. Highlight the rest, and cut them out (Ctrl + X) |
Now here comes the fun part! |
Go up to your timeline. Select the 2nd frame and right click. Select INSERT BLANK KEYFRAME. Your first sprite should dissapear. Time to make some magic! |
Right below the timeline, some very small buttons live. Click on the second one (a grey square behind the blue square) to take advantage of Onion Skinning. This option enables you to see the sprites from the previous frame/frames. |
From there paste your sprites again, select the next one in sequence, and place it directly on top of your last sprite's shadow. Cut out the remaining sprites and repeat pasting them in each different frame until you have no more left. |
~ REMEMBER ~ You must have one keyframe for each action the sprite performs or else it will not function properly. So if you had 10 sprites of Megaman running, you'll have 10 key frames. |
When all of your sprites are in position, look under the timeline and find the title Scene 1. Click on this to go back to your main stage! |
Now that you have your blank stage again, call up your animation from your library and find your animation. Click and drag it onto stage. |
If you did everything right, and test your movie, your animation should be moving just like my ninja above. |
TADA! You've just animated your own sprite! |
Next we're gonna make your cool sprite move across the screen. This is the basic movement in any sprite movie. |
From the stage, grab your animation and drag it out of the boundaries and make sure it is facing the right way it will be moving. |
Reach up to your timeline and go to about the 50th frame. Once you get there, right click and select INSERT FRAME. |
After that, right click on the 50th frame and select CREATE MOTION TWEEN. |
Your frames between 1 and 50 should now be highlighted blue with a dashed line through the center. |
Click back on the 50th frame and add a keyframe. The dashed line should now be replaced with a long arrow, like above! |
Go back and click on Frame 1. Make sure your sprite is exactly where you want it. I want my ninja to run from the outside so I placed him outside the rightof the stage. |
When your sprite is positioned, select the 50th frame and move it directly across the other side of the stage. By pressing and holding SHIFT, the computer will help your sprite maintain a straight line across! |
With everything set, test your movie. If all goes well your sprite should be moving across stage, just like mine! |
Well that's about it for Sprites: Done Right! Let's recap what you've learned... |
You've taken a simple sprite sheet and imported it into your library. |
1. Imported Sprite Sheet |
Your broke apart the sheet and harvested what you wanted. |
2. Broke Sheet and Collected Needed Sprites |
With those sprites, you made them animate in a seperate clip. |
3. Animated Sprite in a Movie Clip |
Finally, you gave your sprite a bit of more movement by tweening. |
4. Tweened Movie Clip |
With your new skills, you can go out into the world and create some really great sprite movies! It's all how you make it... |
Of course, this isn't everything. There is still much more to learn and add, such as a background for your sprites and having them interact. Just experiment with things and see what comes out! |
Well that's about it for me. I hope you have enjoyed yourself and learned lots of new things. Good luck! And who knows, maybe we'll see eachother again soon. Kudos! |
