Flash 8 Effects |
Hello there. This tutorial will explain the special effects you can get using the Flash 8 filters. You need some basic flash knowledge before you start with this tutorial. If you are a complete flash n00b, then I suggest you watch Ultimate Tutorial 2 first, even though it is a Flash MX tutorial it will still help you understand the basics of flash. OR YOU CAN JUST OR |

Well then. In previous version of Flash (4, 5, MX, MX 2004) you had to use photoshop and other external software to get really nice special effects. The problem with that was that most of those programs (photoshop, fireworks) use bitmaps, while flash uses vectors (that is why you can scale things in flash as much as you like without it losing quality, which you can't do with bitmaps) And the problem with bitmaps is that they are HUGE in file size. Because Flash is now owned by Adobe, the creator of photoshop, they put a lot of the Photoshop effects in flash, but this time they are also vector based, so you can as well safe time by doing it all in flash, as well as saving you flash's file size. How is that! |

Now convert your circle into a movie clip. You do that by selecting your circle and pressing F8, and then selecting MOVIECLIP from the list. The Flash 8 filters (as they are called) only work on movie clips, button and text. Not on tweens and graphic's Don't ask me why, it just doesn't work. |
BACK |
BACK |
Now select your movie clip, and open up your filters menu. Your filters menu is located just next to properties (in the bottom of the screen, on the left) |
The filters menu looks like this: |
Now we are going to add the blur effect. You can add new filters to your movie clip by clicking on the + (plus) Just like you can remove one by selecting it and pressing the - (minus) |
Now a little list of effects will appear. Select BLUR from the list. |
Now a sub menu appears next to it. This is where you can select all the settings for the blur effects. |
The different options do the following: |
Blur X : Blurs the circle horizontal, the number is the amount is blurs Blur Y : Blurs the circle vertical, the number is the amount is blurs The X and Y blurring are linked to each other, so they will both increase the same amount. You can un-link them by clicking on the little picture of a LOCK QUALITY sets the quality of the blur. But I suggest never setting it higher then LOW, else your movie or game will lag a lot. |

done with filters? Then learn about: |
DROP SHADOW Ok, so you would like to know what drop shadow does? Actually it does just what the name says it does... it creates a drop shadow! First, delete the blur effect you created on your circle by selecting BLUR in the filter window, and pressing the minus button. Or you can just keep it, it doesn't affect the drop shadow in any way. It will just also use the drop blur to create shadows with. |
DROP SHADOW Now select drop shadow from the list. Notice it creates a shadow for your circle! Giving it a more 3D feeling. |
DROP SHADOW You will notice drop shadows has a lot more modifiers to toy with the blur. |
The Blur X & Y is the same as in the blur filter. This just basically tells the drop shadow how much the shadow should blur. Basically that becomes that if an object is far away it is blurred more then when it is close. You can see the difference here: |
No blur: |
10 blur: |
Strength determines the strength of the drop shadow: |
Strength 50% |
Strength 150% |
Note: You CAN go over 100%, 1000% is the maximum |
For quality the same rule as for blur. Best do not set it higher then Low, else you movie/game will lag on slower PC's You can set the color of your drop shadow as well: |
Angle adjust the angle for which the shadow faces, just imagine like the the light would be coming from. You can do this to match for example the lighting in your scene, if light comes from the top left corner, the angle should be set to approximately 45 degrees. Note: The RIGHT of the circle represents 0 or 360 degrees. So not the top as you might think. |
45 degrees |
300 degrees |
Distance is the distance the drop shadow is away from the object. Distance can also be a negative number, then the drop shadow will face in the opposite direction |
5 |
20 |
Now, the last few things just give a different effect to your drop shadow: |
Knockout: Only displays the shadow Not the object itself |
Inner Shadow: Makes a shadow inside the object, It's kinda like a radial gradient. |
Hide Object: Hides the object, only displays the shadow. |
Note: You can only enable 1 of these effects at a time! |
DROP SHADOW That was everything there is to tell about drop shadows! |
BACK TO MENU |
BACK TO MENU |
GLOW Ahhh... glow. You can do a lot of sweet effects with this. Especially if you combine them with other effects. Glow is like a blur, only it keeps your normal movie clip, and ads a glow around it, instead of blurring your object itself. Please delete any effects you still have on your circle. (select it and press -) |
GLOW Now add a glow effect to it. You will instantly see the glow effect. That standard glow color is Red, so your circle will have a red glow to begin with, you can change the color and everything else later on. |
(it kinda looks like a sun!) |
GLOW Now you can alter the effects. You already know about the X and Y blur, that just tells flash how much flow it should add horizontally of vertically. Try upping it and see what happens. |
A bigger glow: |
Note: Since X and Y relates to the amount of pixels in flash, a blur of 5 may in some documents be very small, but in others (with a higher resolution) rather small. Keep that in mind when blurring! |
GLOW Well... now you have probably upped your glow all the way to the max.... am I correct? Well, you will notice your glow might not be so strong.... You see. The glow has the same intensity when it is set to Blur 5, as when it is set it blur 100. However, you can adjust the intensity by upping strength: |
500%: |
GLOW And as always... keep Quality at low... to avoid lag. Now about knockout and inner glow: |
Knockout: Only displays the glow, not the object itself |
Inner Glow: Makes it glow on the inside, rather then the outside. |
GLOW And of course color changes the color of the glow. |
GLOW Well, that's everything there is to say about glow! ... Wait, maybe I can give you an example of what you can do with it. (the sun was made by combining soften fill edges, glow and blur effects) |
GLOW That's it! You now mastered Glow! Congratulations! |
BEVEL Ahhh Bevel... You use this to... well. Bevel stuff. You can use it to give some depth to your buttons for example. Like I did with my NEXT and BACK buttons Please select your circle and delete any filters that were already applied to it. |
BEVEL Now put a Bevel filter on it. You will notice your circle will now look like it has depth on it, sorta speaking. |
BEVEL But as always... There are a lot of things we can adjust about this! I might even say Bevel has the most options of them all! |
BEVEL Since you already know about Blur X-Y, Strength and Quality, I won't be talking about them in this subject. Just keep in mind Blur doesn't blur on this outside of your object this time, but on the inside. If you don't know about them yet you should read the Blur subject again. Let's start with Shadow and Highlight Here you can pick the color of your shadow. Black would be the most common I guess. White is most common for highlight, but if your character/object would be somewhere where yellow light would shine on him it could be yellow for example. |
BEVEL here is a little example: |
highlight |
shadow |
BEVEL Angle is the angle of which the light would be coming (so where the highlight is, the shadow will be in the opposite direction) |
Here you see the Angle being rotated 360 degrees: |
BEVEL Distance determines the distance of the blur (how much it will go inside the circle), so basically how much depth your bevel will have. |
Distance 5 |
Distance 10 |
BEVEL Just like with glow and drop shadow you can also enable Knockout here, so you will only see the bevel, and not the rest of the movie clip. |
BEVEL But there also is a new thingy here... one that we didn't see before: TYPE. |
BEVEL If you click on TYPE you will see this drop down menu. |
The options give you the following effects: |
INNER: Gives a bevel effect on the inside of the circle |
OUTER: Gives a bevel effect on the outside of the circle |
OUTER: Combines Inner and Outer |
BEVEL Well... I guess we have had all the BEVEL options now. Let's move on with the next subject then, shall we! |
GRADIENT GLOW Mm mm... Gradient glow. I think I can best describe this as a combination of the Glow and Drop shadow filters. Confused? You don't have to be! Just make sure you have read the Drop Shadow and Glow sections before attending this one! Basically what it does it creates a drop shadow, which you can position somewhere under your clip... But here comes the new thingy.... You can have multiple colors in the drop shadow created! Like this: |
GRADIENT GLOW Before we continue please delete any filters from your circle you had put in there. |
GRADIENT GLOW Now select Gradient Glow from the menu. And.... a drop shadow appears on your circle! Did I do anything wrong? No you didn't. Just wait and see! |
GRADIENT GLOW Now it starts getting interesting. We are going to toy a bit with the extra options provided for Gradient Glow. |
I won't explain about strength, quality or blur X-Y anymore. If you wan'T to know more about that just read the Blur or Glow section again... This is like... The advanced glow section! |
GRADIENT GLOW I will tell you something about Angle and distance, in cause you forgot about that. |
Angle controls where your shadow will be. Just rotate it. You will see your shadow will rotate along your circle. |
Angle rotates 360 degrees: |
GRADIENT GLOW And distance... Well, basically just tells flash how far away or close your drop shadow has to be (this also be a negative number) |
Distance being upped and lowered: |
GRADIENT GLOW So far we have only been repeating some things explained before. But now I am going to explain your something new! You see the color bar on the right? Try clicking on the black box, and giving it another color! |
Select a color |
GRADIENT GLOW You will see that the color of the drop shadow changes! You can also do this with the left box... If you do this, you will notice a gradient effect! |
GRADIENT GLOW But it doesn't stop there! Try clicking somewhere in between the two boxes... Another box appears! You can keep making gradient like that. You can also drag the boxes by holding them. You can also remove the extra boxes them by selecting them and dragging them down |
4 colors: |
GRADIENT GLOW You can also enable Knockout just like with glow and drop shadow. Now your will only see the glow, not the movie clip itself: |
GRADIENT GLOW You can also enable Knockout just like with glow and drop shadow. Now your will only see the glow, not the movie clip itself: And just like with BEVEL, you can also set a type: |
INNER: Gives a effect on the inside of the circle |
OUTER: Gives a effect on the outside of the circle |
GRADIENT GLOW Mmmm... I guess that was all. Is gradient glow cool or what? |
GRADIENT BEVEL Actually Gradient Bevel is a lot like Gradient glow. Only this time for Bevel instead of glow. Before we begin remove any filters from your circle you had in there. |
GRADIENT BEVEL Now select Gradient Bevel from the filter list... But what's that? IT LOOKS JUST LIKE A NORMAL BEVEL! Actually it is kind of the same, you just can do a bit more with it. |
GRADIENT BEVEL But as you can see it has a few more options then the normal Bevel filter. Since you already know about the first couple of filters (the ones marked below in red) I won't be talking about them. If you don't know what they do I suggest you try the normal BEVEL subject first. |
GRADIENT BEVEL But as you can see there are also quite a few new options in there. Just like in gradient glow, you have the weird little color bar. That is where you can select the color of your shadow and your highlight (shadow is right, highlight is left) But as you can see there also is a third color box.... and you can create even more if you want. Select the middle color box, and give it another color... Let's say...Blue. |
GRADIENT BEVEL But what is that? My circle doesn't become blue. It has some purple added into it! Well duh! Since flash also blurs it (blur X & Y remember) It mixes the colors red and blue a bit... So you get purple.' |
GRADIENT BEVEL BUT... you can also add more boxes then just the three that you already have! Just click somewhere where there is no box. A new color box will be added. If you add it closer to the left it will show up near the highlight, if you put it closer to the right it will show up near the shadow. |
GRADIENT BEVEL You can make as many of these boxes as you like. You can also remove them by holding them, and dragging them off the color bar (drag them down) Note: Only works for boxes you added yourself. |
GRADIENT BEVEL Now, there are 2 options left. You should probably already know what they do. But i'll still explain them. First. Knockout. Enable this to only see the BEVEL and not the movie clip itself. |
GRADIENT BEVEL You can also adjust the TYPE of the bevel. |
GRADIENT BEVEL And... Now you mastered Gradient Bevel! Congratulations! |
ADJUST COLOR Now about adjust color. This is one of the most basic filters. But one of the toughest to explain I think.... For this exercise I don't want you to use your circle, but import a picture instead. Cause you won't really see many of the adjust color effects on a plain circle. You can import a picture by going to File, Import, Import to stage. I am going to use this pizza pic. If you want to use it as well. Just click on it to download it. |
ADJUST COLOR Of course you have to convert your picture to a movie clip before you can use a filter on it (remember... it only works on movie clips, buttons and text!) So select your picture and press F8 and select Movie Clip from the list. |
pizza |
ADJUST COLOR But there do appear some extra options for your filter. With these options we can change the colors of the pizza. You can for example make your pizza green. In other versions of flash you could also do things like this in properties with the COLOR panel. But this gives a better look. Anyway's. The options you can choose from with adjust color are the following: |
ADJUST COLOR First just try to up BRIGHTNESS. And as you could have guessed... this adjusts the brightness of your pizza. Try upping the brightness to 100 Just compare it to the effect you would have gotten by doing it with COLOR PROPERTIES instead of this filter: |
With filter: |
With properties: |
ADJUST COLOR Now... Put brightness back to 0, cause we are going to talk about contrast now. Try upping it to 100. As you can see it is a lot like upping the brightness to 100, But the difference is that contrast brings out the Bright colors more (yellow in this case) and leaves darker colors unharmed. |
ADJUST COLOR Now. Put contrast back to 0. Now try upping Saturation to 100. As you can see this is the opposite of Contrast, this brings out all the dark colors and leaves the brighter ones unharmed. Note: Put it to -100 makes your picture grey! |
ADJUST COLOR Alright then... Put that back to 0. Now for the last option. Hue. This basically just changes the color of the picture. You could also do this in Color Properties before. But this gives a much better effect. The HUE bar has 3 different colors. All the way to the left is blue, the middle is red, to the right is green, and all the way to the right is blue again. This represents all the colors people can see. Of course you can just drag the bar to get other types of colors. |
ADJUST COLOR Here are some examples you can get: |
ADJUST COLOR Well... you probably thought we were done eh? Well, you thought wrong! You can also combine the different options to get different effects! You can even put multiple Adjust color effect on top of one another! (just add another Adjust Color filter) |
ADJUST COLOR That was pretty cool eh? Now that we had all the filters. You can move on to the COMBINING FILTERS section of the tutorial. |
COMBINING FILTERS Now that you know how filters work, you can go and combine them! But before you got an do that. There are some things you need to know. Filters influence each other. But the important thing is that filters on top will always be executed before the ones under them. So if you put a Drop shadow, and a blur under that. Your blur will also blur the drop shadow. But if you put a blur and put a drop shadow on it. It will also blur the drop shadow. Confused? Take a look at this example: |
COMBINING FILTERS You can combine filters to get all sorts of cool effects. Like this sun: |
COMBINING FILTERS That is actually everything you need to know about combining filters. |
EXTRA OPTIONS As you probably noticed there are a few more options in the filters list that we haven't yet talked about. |
EXTRA OPTIONS The Remove all, Disable all and Enable all functions do exactly what you think they would do: |
Disable all disables all the filters. So they will still be in the list. But they won't show anymore. This can come in handy to keep your flash file running fast while you are working on it, and once your project is completed you can just enable them again. Disabled filters will have a red X in front of them. |
EXTRA OPTIONS There are also presets for filter. If you made a awsome combination of filters (see the Combining Filters section for more info) you can save it as a preset, so you can instantly put the combination on any filter you want. Hover over presets, and this menu appears: |
Press Save As to save your pre-set. You can enter a name for your preset. After you saved it it will appear in the list: |
If you want to put this preset in another object, just go to your object, open up filters, and select your preset from the list. |
EXTRA OPTIONS You can also remove your presets if you don't want to have them saved anymore. Just select DELETE from the list. |
This menu then appear, just select the preset you wish the delete and press DELETE Same goes for renaming it (click rename, double click on the name, and type the new name) |
EXTRA OPTIONS And we're spend! You now know everything there is to know about filters! |
There is another cool new function in Flash 8 called Blending. You might know it from Photoshop, that also has blending options. In this section I'm going to explain to you how blending works, and what the different kinds of blending options do you can choose from. I won't explain each particular blending option like I did with filters. But I'll just go in depth on how they work and what you can do with them. |
What blending does, is it blends objects or colors into one another. For the first example i want you to draw 3 circles. a RED a BLUE and a GREEN one. Those are the 3 primary colors that light is build up from. A lot of people think the primary colors are red, green and yellow. But this is not true. Yellow is a primary color for paint, not for light. Come real close to your TV or monitor, you can see the primary colors. Anyway's, back to the subject. Once you drew 3 circles, convert each one to a movie clip (just like with Filter, blending only works with Movie clips and Buttons (not even text this time!) Like this: |
Now put the circles on top of one another like this: (it doesn't matter which one is on top) |
Some people might now already see where we are going (you get stuff like this at school) Now select one of your movie clip, and open up properties (next to filters) Left bottom corner of your screen. |
In properties, there is a tab named BLEND... which is what we need! |
If you open up BLEND you will see a list of different blending options. |
Now... with one of your circles selected, I wan't you to select DIFFERENCE from the list. This will make the difference between the color of your movie clip, and the underlying movie clip visible. Confused? Just try it out! |
Try the same for all the other movie clip, and you will see you will get all the primary colors! |
Well, enough bitching about primary colors, that was just to get your introduces to blending. You can use that difference blend to create cool effects though! Now lets try something else. Lets say the... Inverse blend! Import a picture to your main stage. I'll use this watch (not a real watch, it's 3D. I made it, but it's good to use as an example click the picture to download it |
Now, import it in flash (file import) Now that you got that done, make a new layer, and draw a circle in it, and convert it to a movie clip. Select the circle, and go to BLEND, then select INVERT from the list. |
Basically, what this does is that it makes all the darker colors bright, and the lighter colors dark. |
You can now probably imagine what kind of cool stuff you can do with this in your movies. But of course there are a lot more blends. So I will show you some more examples. Not all like I said before, just experiment with them as you like. Like OVERLAY, that one mixes your picture with all the underlying things: |
And like those blending's, there are a lot more. Experiment with them, and see what effects if right for you. Some other blending options are for example: Darken: Darkens your scene (good for night scenes) Lighten: Lightens you scene, good for scenes with a lot of lights in them. Hard Light: Brightens up the colors. Just experiment! It is hard to give examples for each filter, cause it just depends on when you use them, so... experiment to see which one is right for your scene! |
Now before we end this subject. There is 1 more thing. As you might have noticed, under where it says BLEND, it has a box called; Runtime bitmap caching |
Now... this is a great option to let flash run faster! As you probably noticed, Filters and blending makes your movie/game run pretty slow. As I told you before, flash uses Vectors instead of bitmaps. But the problem with vectors is that they need to be re-calculated in each frame, thus making your movie run slow. BUT... if you have a static object (so some that WONT MOVE in your scene. You might want to use Runtime bitmap Caching. This treats your movie clip that is made of vectors, as a bitmap, and it won't need to be re-calculated in each frame. Thus keeping your flash run a lot smoother. How is that! |
Well.... Congratulations! Now know basically everything there is to know about flash 8 filters and blending options! Now go work on a project and use them. See what kind of cool effects you can make! |
