I believe that everyone can draw.
Just some people practice more
than others.
If you hate drawing... Why are you
trying to do any kind of animation?
If you like drawing but aren't to great
at it, I would suggest going to the mall.
Ya. The mall you heard me... GO to the
mall and bring a sketchpad.
Draw EVERYTHING.  Draw the people
draw the vending machines, draw trash.

Practice Drawing...

The reason I am telling you to go
to the mall is to see all different
types of people that you can draw.
Don't ask them to stop and
pose, don't worry about
detail... Just try to get the
base shapes down, it can be
quick and dirty.
Try not to over think
your drawings... That will
mess them up.  Be Quick.

As You keep drawing you
build muscle memory, and
you see the shape and
flow of objects better.
I recommend filling an
entire sketchbook (if not
more than one) Before you
try frame by frame animation.
To work with tweens or as
I call it "Symbol Animation"
You don't have to draw alot.

Ok. Lets try to draw in flash!
Here are some tips.

Ok. Lets try to draw in flash!
Here are some tips.

I see alot of flash art that
looks like this with the jagged
lines and stuff...  not cool.
Most people blame this on the
fact that they can't afford a
graphics tablet.
Graphics tablets are great but
looking at other artists who
don't use them there are ways
to make quality art with just
your mouse.

Whoa That's white!

So lets draw with the mouse.  The key is
making basic shapes and refining them.
Lets draw a lamp.  That's right...

Crappy lamp.
(yes drawn with a mouse)

Ok now lets look at what
we have here.  we have a
Lampshade, a base and a cord.
In our overzealousness we
drew the whole lamp at once.
When you animate in flash this
is Rarely the best option.

Instead you might want
to draw the seperate
parts of the lamp and
put them together after
you work with each.

TO the right you can
see what I mean.
Instead of worrying
about a whole
object we break it
down into parts that
are more managable
with a mouse.

Lampshade

Base

Cord

Now you will learn something cool!
Take your lampshade and lets work on it by
itself.
I want you to fill it with the color that it
is drawn with.  That's right make it a solid
SHape like this.

Why would you do that?
So you can make good lines.
Smooth out your lampshade so
it looks like the bottom
example.
Next with it selected Copy it to
the clipboard.  (ctrl c)  Then
paste it in place.  (ctrl +shift v)
DO NOT DESELECT IT.  Go up to
the file menu and select:
Modify => Shape => Expand Fill.

In expand fill set the direction
to inset and set the distance
to 6. (play around with it)
Now change the color of what
you have selected...
Smooth lines, lines that anyone
can be proud to make.
So lets see what we get when
we go a few steps farther.

Now we learn to paint well.  some people
might not be using all the tools that are
available so I'm going to show you some.

Select your Paintbrush.  now down below
the toolbox you should see a little blue
circle with a red line through it.

It looks
like this:

This is one of the most
usefull parts of flash!

This is the Paint Type select icon:
and this thing is VERY handy for making flash
that looks great!

For now just select "paint selection"
If you still have the center part of your
lamp shade selected you can paint it and
you won't paint over anything else but what
you have selected.
Play around with the other paint types.

So using those few
tips I am able to take
the rough on the
left and work
with it until I get
something like what
is on the right.
I like to keep parts of
stuff in separate
symbols just in case
I want to animate it
later on down
the road.
and it screws up less.

I couldn't
resist.

Ok so now that the
myth that you can't draw
well in flash without a tablet
is busted. and you learned
some cool stuff about how
to draw in flash well even
if you have a tablet.
Lets move on to Doing what I just did with
that silly dancing lamp.

Symbol animation!
(Dramatic music plays...)

(Lets ditch the white for now.)

"Symbol Animation" is
animation with set pieces
or symbols.  You move
the pieces around to
create the illusion of a
character or object
coming to life.
Symbol animation is easier than FBF
(frame by frame) animation but is
still a very hard thing to do.
ANimation ain't easy B.

Meet mr symbol bot.  He likes long walks on
the beach. (especially if there is an oil spill.)

What do you say we tear him apart?

What we have here are
several parts that make
up a character.
You Know how to make
symbols in flash, if you don't
you can find out how by
googling it.

For now I'm going to assume
you know how to create symbols.
For those of you who have seen my other
tutorials you might recognize the tips on the
next few pages.
Read them anyway you might miss something.

For each "bone in your character or moveable
object you will need to make a new symbol.

centered
Pivot points

Altered

Pivot points

The pivot points of parts
are important for motion
tweening your animations.
You want to make the pivot
point be where the bone's
Base should be located.

EXAMPLE:
The
forarm's
Base
is the
Elbow.

(Hold your mouse
over the arm)

Ok so we have symbols and we
put them together.... now what?

At this point you have options...  You can
animate with tweens or set
key frames for every time
you move your body parts.

I'm going to explain each of these
options here and give you
pros and cons of working with
either of them.
Most of the time you will wind
up using a mixture of both...
If you are smart.

The ball on the left is
motion tweened...
this gives you a smooth
up and down motion.
This is great for mechanical
devices you want to animate.
Personally I think it shouldn't
be used as the primary tool
for animation of characters.
It isn't unique enough.

It isn't as smooth of a motion

But that is what gives animation

I want to make it clear that I know that
ball bounce looked awful...
I'm just using it to prove a point...
Most of the time if you put more effort
into your character's animation you learn
more about that character.
If you work with that character and
make a mistake you might notice something
about that mistake you like.
That is how Dopey in Disney's Snow white
got his miss step in the movie.
It was a happy accident that they discovered.

So Lets take a look at animation with symbols.
First you need to figure out what your
character looks like from 5 angles.

So Lets take a look at animation with symbols.

You can now copy and paste the character
facing the other direction so they can turn.

You can now copy and paste the character
facing the other direction so they can turn.

Then you decide what actions the character
will do when it is facing in a given direction.
Lets say you know the character will need to
walk around...  Makes sense to have the walk
cycle be animated from the side view.
SO if the character is walking you will ONLY
see the side of the character.

This next part can be
tricky if you are not
prone to organization.
You need to take all
the BASE actions for
each direction and
put them into the same
symbol in flash.
I call these
CHaracter Palettes.

(a very simple palette.)

The Palatte on the right is
all the symbols needed to
make the animation at the
bottom of the screen.
You can find this technique in
animation EVERYwhere.  A prime Example is a classic.
The Flintstones... you know how the characters
always run exactly the same way every episode.
you are limited... you need to recycle your work.

As you use a character you will build up quite a
palette of motions and actions for the character.
Just make sure that when the action is done you
have your character in the same basic position that
they started in and you can reuse that animation in
alot more instances.
The KEy is to organize the pallate.
Make a Duplicate in the library of your movie.
pull the Duplicate into your movie and pick out the
actions you need.   Delete everything else.
Put the actions into the timeline you are animating
the character on in order to create the action
you are going for.

FRAME BY fRAME...

i dON'T WANT ANYONE TO THINK THEY WILL LEARN ALL
THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT FRAME BY FRAME FROM
THIS TUTORIAL...     iT JUST WILL NOT HAPPEN.
iF THE FOLLOWING GETS YOU INTERESTED IN TRYING
THIS STYLE OF ANIMATION PLEASE GO BUY A BOOK
ON ANIMATION, OR EVEN GO TO THAT PLACE WHERE
THEY LOAN OUT BOOKS FOR FREE...   tHE LIBRARY.
aNYWAY.  nOW THAT THE DISCLAMER IS OVER...
fRAME BY FRAME HAS ALOT OF CHARACTER DUE TO
THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO WAY THAT A PERSON
CAN DRAW THE exact SAME LINE OVER AND OVER
pERFECTLY IN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME.
yOU CAN GET PRETTY GOOD THOUGH. AND AS LONG
AS THE LINE IS FAIRLY CONSISTANT NO ONE NOTICES.

oK SO FOR STARTERS DON'T TRY TO DRAW A PERFECT
DRAWING EVERY TIME.  tHESE PICTURES flash BY AND
ONLY SHOW FOR 1/12TH TO 1/30TH OF A SECOND.
sO BE SLOPPY... AND GET THE BASE MOTION FIRST.

(EEK...  WHITE AGAIN...)

cLEARLY THIS WILL NOT BE PERFECT ON YOUR FIRST
TRY... BUT FEAR NOT... EVEN THE ANIMATORS AT DISNEY
DON'T GET IT RIGHT ON THIER FIRST TRY.
tHIER SECRET IS REFINEMENT.

1ST TRY...                        rEFINING.

kEEP REFINING
THE BASE MOTION
WITH STICK FIGURES
OR WHAT EVER YOU
CAN DRAW QUICKLY.
tRY ADDING MORE
KEY FRAMES OR
EVEN TAKING
DRAWINGS OUT.

aFTER YOU ARE HAPPY WITH THE BASIC MOVEMENT
YOU NEED TO START FLESHING OUT THE CHARACTER
OVER THE ROUGH THAT YOU HAVE CREATED.

wHEN i START THIS PROSSESS i LIKE
TO CHANGE THE COLOR i DREW THE
ROUGHS IN.  AND PUT THEM ON A
LOCKED LAYER bENEATH WHERE i AM
DRAWING MY FINISHED CHARACTER.

tHROUGH REFINING YOUR ANIMATIONS YOU CAN
MAKE HIGH QUALITY CHARACTERS THOUGH IT IS
A TIME CONSUMING PROSSESS.

tHIS IS A DIFFERENT
RUN THAT i ANIMATED
EARLIER BUT YOU GET
THE IDEA.
tHESE DRAWINGS ARE
NOT THE BEST BUT THEY
WORK FOR THE RUN.
IF IT'S AN ACTION THAT
WILL BE REPEATED MORE
SPEND MORE TIME ON IT
TO MAKE IT LOOK GREAT
YOU CAN SNEAK PAST WITH
A POOR DRAWING NOW AND
THEN IF MOST OF IT
LOOKS GOOD.

the Design of your character is
Extremely important. You have to be
able to draw it over and over alot
so KEEP IT SIMPLE!
To start your design work with
basic shapes.  This way you can keep
your character's proportion the
same alot easier.
On the next pages I will show you
some basic designs that work well.
