So you want to draw really great stuff but you don't have any skills? Guess what those people who can draw... they worked for it. It takes alot of practice to become a good artist... so if you don't love to draw you might want to think about writing or film instead of cartooning. For those of you brave enough "lets get to the learnin'!" |
What the hell is Retro-Style? Um... well retro is taking every rule for good drawing that any teacher has ever taught, and throwing it out the window. Basicly you have been taught to make your drawings look 3d. The idea behind retro is to get your characters to look flat. Like old cartoons from the 50s They were quick and easy to make and any graphic designer could draw them. |
I say any graphic designer because these cartoons were based on good graphic design, and not good drawing skills. They are simple shapes and the eye is drawn to simple shapes its a fact... just look at road signs... all simple shapes. Remember shows with cavemen, bears, futuristic people with folding cars. that is true retro But we are after Retro-Style. |
The Basics |
Ok so Retro style is based on those old cartoons but has a modern edgy-ness all it's own. Just a word to anyone who gets discouraged while they draw because thier drawings are not that great looking right away... Any good artist starts with a very rough very quickly drawn picture then they refine it into a better picture. it takes patience... and pencils. |
You tired of reading yet? I'm not tired of typing... so... Lets Cover the Basics. Again Graphic design is based on simple shapes and the flow of the eye... or how the eye reads the image. Simple is quicker for people's eyes to prossess so their eyes will gravitate to it naturally. |
Lets start with the most simple shape what do you say? The Circle is the first and best way to make your characters retro. !!!ATTENTION!!! This is not your old "start with a circle" approach to drawing. The key here is that you want the finished drawing to have the circle you start with be prominant in the design. |
Just to make sure you know what this means here are some Examples. Right wrong You want to build the character into the circle and retain the shape with the final artwork. If you don't get it... keep thinkin'. |
Basicly you don't want to build a character out of the circle... |
Ok so with your base head we start with the eyes. |
Notice the eyes are tilted slightly. This makes the drawing more interesting |
Keep the nose small so that there is a lot of contrast in size compared to the eyes. |
Be sure that you can get a good range of emotions from the mouth that you choose to put on your characters. |
the ears are basicly pasted on the sides of the head. |
Hair should be a fairly solid shape. Imagine it's a helmet. Also it should have striations to liven it up. |
your eyebrows should be visible over the hair style. |
cLEAR OUT YOUR GUIDE LINES AND YOU ARE ALMOST DONE. jUST 2 MORE STEPS. |
AROUND THE OUTER EDGE OF YOUR CHARACTER THICKEN THE LINES. tHIS SEPERATES THE CHARACTER FROM THINGS AROUND IT. |
aFTER YOU HAVE YOUR FINISHED DRAWING IT'S TIME for COLOR. And as you can see there isn't a truely "wrong" way to color these retro characters. have fun and experiment with color on your characters. You might get some cool insights! |
Ok so we can draw a kids face. It's not the most ground breaking character ever made that is for sure. So lets look at some other character types and try to draw them. For each I will use a different base shape to try to give you some ideas of your own. I don't want you to copy my work... I'm just showing you the base principles. |
Next lets design with a Square. As you can guess there are a lot of different ways you can design your characters in this style. Lets see some other shapes... |
Building on Fun-damentals |
Triangles are great for all your characters too. |
SO Practice drawing a head or two real quick... I'll wait............ Well... ya that looks really bad. But keep working on your skill cause sooner or later your drawings won't look bad. No matter how good the tutorial you would be stupid to expect to have perfect art after reading and drawing one head. So again don't get discouraged, and don't hate me. :P |
Ok so we need to build on the head and try to get more ammo in our artistic armada. Let me show you some more facial features that you can use on your characters. Again you can rip these off but you won't learn anything... try putting your own spin on these designs. First Up why don't we tackle the windows to the soul... The EYES. |
EYES (print and use as study reference) |
With female eyes you can get a lot of variations by changing the lashes. |
Noses (print and use as study reference) |
ears (print and use as study reference) |
As you go through these try drawing each from different angles. |
mouths (print and use as study reference) |
That should be enough to get you started on your own. oh wait... I forgot hair! I'm going to have to give hair a full page though. |
Hair (print and use as study reference) |
Again just to make sure that this is clear... these are just samples and you should experiment and find your own way of drawing each part of your characters. Ok... so now that we have completely run the head into the ground lets move on to the rest of the body... One section at a time. I know that I've had troubles getting the head to match up to the sholders in the past. |
It was mainly cause I wanted to draw a neck when you don't need a neck. it is surprising how often you don't need one. (Especially on Kids.) |
This toon isn't too complex, and that makes it good place to start, lets break it down. |
Made from SImple shapes. |
Thick outline gives seperation. |
Eyes Slightly Skewed. |
Small Nose |
Hair Striations |
Kids have odd proportions... thus the long arms and short legs. |
Ties and bowties help characters look nerdy. (especially kids.) |
It's important to point out what is not on the character... You won't see to much detail on a retro-style drawing. This is a simple and clean style and putting more detail lines on a character makes them muddled. Not to say you can't, but it's something to stay clear of as a purist. |
Body Building |
This style is all about making the lines you draw seri0usly work overtime. Everything needs to be simple with no redundancy. SO moving on we need to explore other body types. On the following pages you will find some examples to learn from. This is going to be a series of tutorials to give you a chance to practice before moving on. |
start off with the adult male figure facing front. |
to0 Complex. |
detailed. |
simplified. |
simple. |
Adult Female Figure |
be sure that the torso is roughly a diamond shape. |
You can do a lot of variations by changing the height of the character and the placement of her waist. |
Remember! Long neck, Skinny Waist, Wide hips, big breasts, and curves from head to toe. |
